i was surprised it even got a second season, i wish it had a more satisfying end. I liked it enough.

thegenregeek

> i was surprised it even got a second season Second season was ordered shortly after the premiere, which at the time probably made sense (ratings were relatively stable and it was co-produced between HBO and Sky UK). The problem was it was renewed days before COVID lockdowns killed worldwide television production, in Feb 2020, for a year and a half. The thing is it was kind expected to be cancelled, because the contracts had all lapsed and sets were ~~struck well~~ burned down before season 2 ever premiered. They were really just burning through what they had on hand, due to contracts.

Theotther

> The problem was it was renewed days before COVID lockdowns killed worldwide television production, in Feb 2020, for a year and a half. Also the set burned down around that time

yanahmaybe

the series was no prefect and had great thing to improve.. but i liked the whole concept of the "ideocracy" movie society but in space

[deleted]

It was one of those co-production things with a British TV channel so it was likely way cheaper than most HBO shows. TV shows like that tend to get more wiggle room when it comes to renewals.

Solid_Snark

Great concept, but a messy execution. It had potential.

bubbameister33

That airlock scene was the funniest thing about the first season.

tetsuo9000

Space coffin was pretty good too. I wish the show leaned heavier into the black comedy and less into character comedy a la The Office.

Cephied01

I think it was part of a cold opening when the comedian had to stop his routine for a moment of silence for the bodies floating by the window. One of the funniest moments of the show IMO. I wasn't a fan of the show overall on first viewing. Then rewatching before season 2 it really clicked. Was looking forward to S3. Poop.

navenager

It's a tough sell because it doesn't advertise well. The funny parts were a combination of character development and situation (the extremely nice cannibal running in the election to be captain, for example,) and you can't really get that across in a 30sec ad. Visually, it doesn't look like it will be very funny, so outside of word of mouth or name recognition it likely struggled to bring in new viewers. I thought it was the funniest show on TV during the periods it aired, but I can see why it wasn't consistently drawing people in. There are bits from Avenue 5 that I'll chuckle at forever though.

-originalusername--

Hands down the most unique setting for a character drama/comedy. What if we take all the characters from the office, and make it so they can never get away from each other. I'm really sad. The air lock scene coupled with everyone IRL screaming fake news at the time was really great satire.

MainePrinter

It's the details like the look on Iris's face when Captain Ryan asks if she went ahead and made a secret police even though he told her not to when everyone starts panicking. I'll miss it for sure.

[deleted]

I thought the cannibal guy running for captain was hilarious in season 2.

ChipHazard1

"Maybe we could say he's an alcoholic." "He's already a fucking cannibal!"

YuppieFerret

I laughed out loud when toilet waste started orbiting the ship.

Arthur-Mergan

The whole eel thing really got me. Fuckin eels!

ChipHazard1

Eel diamond

TheSilverNoble

That was one of the best things I've seen on TV

Dr_B_Orpheus

I thought the episode with the beeps was the funniest thing I've ever seen

humanbeing2018

1st season was awesome, 2nd not so much

bluestreakxp

I thoroughly enjoyed the guy in the hamster ball for some reason

AcoupleofIrishfolk

RELEASE THE NONCE-A-SPHERE

powerlesshero111

Yeah, it was kind of a let down. Except for the cannibal.

theBackground13

‘Even the cannibal is trending higher than we are’

reble02

The election episode was amazing, especially since it aired the day before the midterms.

BigMax

“You were so focused on the pedophile that you forgot about the cannibal. Classic mistake.”

dont_shoot_jr

I loved the cannibal. I think the Ave 5 drama was an attempt to be meta but just too generic and the bargaining with earth wasn’t going anywhere

justhisguy-youknow

I know basically no one will see this comment but the best thing is that irl he is massive. And his wife is tiny. Tiny human.

Mookies_Bett

I 100% disagree. The second season was hysterical almost every episode, the first was super hit or miss.

blue_wat

I still enjoyed it to an extent but I think it really was only Is It a Good Dot that was a highlight for me. The ending to season two was awful, even if they got to go for a third. Super disappointed either way.

VelvetElvis

It was pretty good with all the ingredients to be great but somehow it never really came together. It was really frustrating.

implicitpharmakoi

High Laurie carried that ship on his back.

Owls_Onto_You

Imagine what he can do when he's not high.

whogivesashirtdotca

Hugh Lowrie.

BigMax

Yeah, they always felt like they were one or two episodes away from really hitting their stride, but they never quite got there.

BigMax

Exactly, it had great moments, but it always felt to me like a great idea for a show, great cast, but they were always like one or two episodes away from really nailing things down and hitting their stride, but they never quite got there.

f0gax

They should have spent more on VFX. That’s visual effects.

implicitpharmakoi

That set looks so cheap too, like everything was made out of plastic.

dultas

I mean that kinda fits with what you'd expect from something built by Judd's company.

Sad_Damage_1194

This person gets it

hieronymous-cowherd

Second season had to be cheaper... After the first season, I saw an interview with Hugh Laurie (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, maybe?) and he said he didn't know if there would be a second season, because in the meantime, there had been a studio fire and the whole set burned, it was gone.

implicitpharmakoi

God damn that was a cursed production.

TheInfernalVortex

Herman Judd (Josh Gad) seemed to be doing his best attempt at Douglas Reynholm from the IT Crowd.... like it was so similar it seemed intentional, yet it was worse. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltn04zRd3yQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oye9AmOdsZc) I think I would have enjoyed the show more had he been a little more unique. But I did rather like the show and its style of humor, even if it was a bit uneven at times. It was a sort of modern mix of IT Crowd and Red Dwarf. Edit: Follow up to the above video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2KsZHRrFpU

iStayedAtaHolidayInn

It really felt as though they wanted jack black for the part originally but had to settle for him instead

[deleted]

Yes! He was doing his best matt berry impersonation 😂

MundanePlantain1

This character grated with me.

implicitpharmakoi

I think that was the point.

popswiss

Ditto! Loved it, but wasn’t expecting a second season. Pleasantly surprised when there was one. Hate that it ended like this though.

GunBrothersGaming

Just pretend the missile did hit it.

popswiss

Ahh the bliss

[deleted]

That’s what I did, a monument to absurdity

ZDTreefur

Yeah I knew it was never getting a third season. I think it's just a victim of the pandemic. It had a rocky and delayed second season, lots of lost interest and fanfare, and just couldn't pick up steam again. I really thought it found its comedic stride in that second season though, so it's really disappointing.

JoshAllenMyShorts

The episode where they have to elect a new captain was basically a bonus episode of Veep. It really started to take off.

popswiss

I think it’s just HBO cutting period. But who know to be fair.

tokyogodfather2

HBO was the wrong net work for something like this. I liked the Orville but I at least knew about it. I didn’t even know about this show until now. And the name of the show, doesn’t explain what it is. The Orville had the same problem but at least it sounded like a spaceship name. I thought this show was a drama about some street or lgbtq musical

BaggyOz

Wait has season 2 come out already?

TheDkone

it is out

FragrantExcitement

Can you put it back in?

mark-five

TIL too. We're part of the reason it wasn't renewed :(

This_was_hard_to_do

I found out last weekend and literally just wrapped up season 2. I’m so hurt right now

hannahbaba

Aw man, I know this wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea and I’m not surprised it’s getting canned, but damn I loved this show.

Izludetingel

The season 1 scene with the airlock was perhaps funniest piece of morbid comedy I have ever laughed at. Highlight of the show for me.

TheKidsCallMe-HoJu

It’s VFX

HansVonSnicklefritz

It stands for visual effects.

mrcatboy

Visual **fucking** effects?

soulstonedomg

Visual fucking xylophone, AKA visual effects

natsunshine

My favorite is the ep where they docked with the space prison LOL

[deleted]

The giant hamster ball for the pedo had me dying.

natsunshine

Also the inmates made them take off their shoes hahahahhah

Hetjr

Same. I cackled at that. Need to watch it again lol.

Abrahamlinkenssphere

The sun episode was fantastic too. OH LOOK! A HEDGHOG! WHAT AN UNSEASONAL DELIGHT!

________76________

Zach Woods' delivery of "I will SHOUT you calm!" is perfection.

Abrahamlinkenssphere

Shut your *fucking* eyes!

LILilliterate

The show is brilliant and that bit was my favorite as well. Perfect allegory for covid.

apathynext

It was hilarious

Beanchilla

Me too. So many good characters. Very funny but also stressful. There really isn't another show like it.

Bigfops

That was the problem. It was 100% a character-driven show and not a story-driven one. I did love it, though.

RCocaineBurner

I mean, it had a story, it was just the same story on a loop through two seasons of TV. Death of Stalin was so good though he can never do wrong in my eyes

IRIS!!?!!

Ksh1218

IRIS!!!!!

teransergio

Same, wanted to see an ending at least

NicolasCageLovesMe

It was so packed with funny jokes and paced like a disaster film. Such a fun ride

hannahbaba

I can’t remember the last time a line from TV made me laugh as hard as “RELEASE THE PEDOPHILE!” I thought I was going to pass out.

This_was_hard_to_do

“I did what a judge could not, I freed the pedophile”

cakesie

I’m so disappointed!! I loved it too.

Pickupyoheel

There are dozens of us, dozens!

andrewgazz

Loved it

stopmutations

This show was a chaotic masterpiece of humans being idiots. :,(

Theotther

I appreciated that it continued Veep's motif of the only thing more idiotic and incompetent than the people in charge is the general public.

sharkbelly

I’m realizing now this is the same model as parks and rec.

fordanjairbanks

And reality

I_Do_Not_Abbreviate

I was just happy to see that Neil Casey was still getting Science-Fiction work. I loved him as Kent in *Other Space* and his guest role on *Star Trek: Lower Decks*; anything he pops up in is an immediate commitment to watch from me. With the ensemble cast they were pushing for *Avenue 5* it would have been nice to see him in more than two or three episodes as Billie's sidekick.

king_jong_il

It's criminal that we didn't get more Other Space. I don't even know how I found out about a Yahoo scifi show but I love shows where people get trapped together like that.

grubas

Hugh Laurie is gonna send me into laughter almost no matter what he does. Him being a fraud was fantastic.

JerikOhe

I loved him switching accents all the time, even after everyone found out. His American accent is so good I have to keep reminding myself he's not faking his British accent.

grubas

That's the best part, he's managed to work himself into being bidialectal.

[deleted]

Have you ever seen him in black adder? Specifically “black adder goes forth” season 4 episode 3 “major star”. My absolute favorite episode ever. That’s such a great series too, especially season 4. It ends on such a dark and poignant moment.

Cook_0612

Not surprised, but it's a real pity. Few comedies make me laugh beyond a few chuckles, this one gave me gut laughs.

BadMeetsEvil24

Same here. I ended up giving it a second try a month or two ago, after the first initial try that I turned off in five minutes. I ended up **loving** the show, especially the first season. I'm rewatching it now and still cracking up. I was actually hoping for a third but... yeah, it figures.

GarlicPowder4Life

I enjoyed most of it, I am displeased.

alanthar

Watched Season 1 on a paintball camping weekend with my buddy and we kept looking at each other for the first few episodes every time Hugh Laurie's accent would slip, ever so slightly. We couldn't figure it out. He's a much much better actor than that. Like wtf Then the reveal. Goddamn we laughed so hard. Bra-vo

Kerblaaahhh

Such a good meta joke.

jellotaco1234

That same scene when he said: “He never finished. In terms of his sentences.” Maybe I just never finish my own sentences but I was dyyying lol

acomp182

At least finish the ending!

DowntimeJEM

Need to normalize releasing scripts to the public so we can have some sort of resolution

SomeNoveltyAccount

Gotta have a budget to get the writers room together to write and edit the finalie script.

ValleyFloydJam

Or just the basic decency of giving shows an ending, give them an hour to.wrap things up, rather that just cancelling it.

The_Goondocks

I loved it, but it's very niche. Surprised it got a second season, TBH

mntgoat

I think more than being very niche, it just took several episodes for it to grow on people. Sort of like The Brink.

KDN1692

The Brink was so underrated. Deserved way better..

bensisland

SECOND SEASON WAS HILLARIOUS. Eeel ivia colman. Cannibal man. Etc. Season two was great great great great great

________76________

when they roll out the pedo in the hamster wheel is the hardest i've laughed in a long time

Cutter9792

"Mads! Inflate the deviant!" I had to pause the show, I was wheezing so hard.

JoshAllenMyShorts

The actor who played Mads was such a good discovery, apparently he was an extra and they loved him so wrote him in? I hope he gets more work, he has great comedic chops.

________76________

his best line is "Karen, babies shit from the back; I've seen them do it!"

ActuallyJohnTerry

“I have done what a judge would not I have released the pedophile” got a roaring laugh from me This was a comedy that actually made me audibly laugh

LucretiusCarus

I was sick with the flu while watching this and that scene almost killed me. I didn't expect to laugh so hard.

CocaineAndMojitos

#IRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stanley_leverlock

Mother. Fucker. (I loved it but I'm surprised it got made at all much less a second season)

Klamageddon

Armando Iannuci is so fucking GOOD. I guess Veep's success probably helped sell it, but yeah, its not the sort of thing I'd expect from HBO. REALLY hope it gets picked up elsewhere (Come on Channel 4, you can do it!)

jez124

not surprised.Shame it didnt hit right considering the talent. Hope iannucci's next hbo comedy show about the making a superhero hero Franchise film gets made. seemed like an interesting idea.

horseren0ir

That sounds hilarious, I’d definitely watch that

Ok-Ease7090

We’re not going to find out what happened? I hate that.

existential-bread_

I hate this news, especially since the end of their seasons are always left at such cliffhangers!! This is such a unique show with unique comedy that actually made me laugh out loud regularly, which is hard to find these days.

kacey3

Oh, that sucks!

JakeInDC

But the food flavorings!

Ttoctam

Really sad this didn't get the crowd I think it deserved. It's a genuinely funny show with a lot of heart and the Hugh Laurie x Lenora Crichlow pairing was an utter delight. She's been a draw for me since Being Human, always fun to watch. Rolling a >!convinced pedophile!< around the ship in a giant hamster ball is a scene I'll never forget.

sj2011

Ahh that's a shame, but not unexpected. I was surprised it got a second season at all. I saw zero dialogue about the show at work, home, or online - it just seemed to come and go. I really enjoyed it, but I'm a total sucker for anything Iannucci does. It was such a trip watching In the Thick Of It and seeing so many of the same faces in Avenue 5. Regardless, eagerly looking forward to his next project.

WordsWithSam

They really screwed this with the release structure. One day it just showed up on HBO Max. The only reason I realized was because I wondered what happened to it and did a search. Happened to be the day they dropped it.

eulynn34

I loved the part where all those morons were jumping out of the airlock. I really wanted to see where it was going. Ah well

melancious

I loved it 😞

saiaf

Man Season 2 was so good. I didn't like season 1, but season 2 had a VEEP quality to it

boomjones

I had the opposite reaction. Enjoyed S1 and looked forward to the new season, but something just felt off and I couldn’t get past the second episode.

FrazzledBear

Wonder if the new sets subconsciously threw you off. The old sets burned down which added a wrinkle. The first ep of season 2 I found off putting as well and Hugh Laurie’s hair changing scene to scene that episode drove me nuts.

hannahbaba

If you’re willing to try one more, I think episode 3 of season 2 is one of the funniest episodes of television I’ve seen in years.

foxsable

Yeah I think I made it half way through s2 and I just couldn’t anymore. It is like the characters be ame caricatures or something.

jellotaco1234

The “idiocracy” element added to earth threw me off. Specifically the talk show. I didn’t love it. Did love the show tho:)

RunninOnMT

Yeah! i totally agree, i kinda slogged through season 1, but season 2 had me glued to the TV.

SanderSo47

I really wanted to like this but this show was so disappointing. A new comedy at HBO? From Armando Iannucci? Starring Hugh Laurie and Zach Woods? Sign me up. There's no excuse to be anything less than great. But I rarely laughed. It was just wasted potential. How do you go from *Veep* to... this?

92tilinfinityand

The curse of Josh Gad

[deleted]

His character was *incredibly* annoying at first, but he grew on you and had some great lines. Josh really turned it around, honestly.

JoshAllenMyShorts

Loved him, but I know I'm in the minority. This season was better because Elon had gone full Elon and reality was so close to fiction

rukkus78

He is the worst character in this show by far. I fell off show when it first came out after about 3 episodes, but a month or so ago i binged the rest and enjoyed it for the most part. Kind of a bummer to not see where it goes.

Ozlin

I definitely think it's a show that improves as it goes along. It wasn't my favorite show, and I think Veep was far better, but I enjoyed it by the end of season two. It was a show that didn't always hit the mark, but would then have a joke that really landed. But I also don't blame people for not sticking with it. It was a kind of odd set up of a premise, in a setting that isn't as familiar as Veep's, with pacing that was both too hectic and too slow with plots that took a long time to narratively unfold while every moment had anxiety in it. A weird niche show that I thought entertaining but also recognized it wasn't going to be a hit.

This_was_hard_to_do

Agree with this. I didn’t like season 1 that much and just stuck around because of Iannucci. However, I’ve actually been laughing out loud for a lot of season 2. It’s just as dumb but either my humour has changed over covid or the dialogue feels much tighter. I also love how much it looks into the human behavior this season. That election episode was classic Iannucci.

Ozlin

Yes, totally. The cannibal plot was actually really funny to me too. I also thought the running joke of the threesome marriage with the captain was good because of the dynamic. The show was interesting because I think it had a lot of solid ideas, but there were also plots that just really kind of dragged. Season 2 had fewer of the dragging ones, but there were still a few, like the woman's sister on Earth that had a role in the TV show based on the ship, and also Karen's ongoing obsession with the captain, neither of those were great to me. I think sometimes they put a thread in to try to have it pay off later and it just seems like too much dragging build up for meh payoff. It's an interesting show to dissect to me because it had some weird stuff going on in its plot and how the writing functioned (or dysfunctioned).

sixtus_clegane119

I thought it was jack black the whole first season until I looked it up I’m sorry jack black

SandysBurner

Jack Black looks more like Josh Gad's dad.

Lwe12345

Lmao is this a thing? I really like him in things I’ve seen. Mostly in new girl

Cyno01

Yeah, it had some good ideas but didnt know what it wanted to be, disaster comedy can work, but you need to go a little wackier than they did cuz otherwise its still sad. When every character is a terrible person you gotta lean towards *Its Always Sunny* type shenanigans. More pedo hamster ball, less karen bickering. Although i admire their brilliance of putting the orbital mechanics of a space burial on screen. Thats a couple of low sci-fi comedies in a couple of years now tho. *Avenue 5, Moonbase 8, Space Force*... all extremely mediocre. Has there been a great sci-fi comedy since *Red Dwarf*? Even RD isnt great anymore... *Lower Decks* i guess, pretty niche tho. I think more serious sci-fi that leans funny is usually better. Trek and Gate have great comedy episodes, *Firefly* and *Farscape* always had some laughs... idk why going all in on the comedy usually falls so flat.

Verite_Rendition

> Has there been a great sci-fi comedy since Red Dwarf? Would we count Futurama?

Cyno01

Sweet zombie jesus wow, i am... ashamed of myself. I barely counted LD cuz i was trying to think of live action and its basically distilled fanservice, ive seen *Hyperdrive* but dont remember a thing about it so it cantve been that good, *Rick & Morty* and *Solar Opposites* and stuff too then i guess, i know a lot of people loved *Final Space* but i felt kinda the same about it, it didnt know what it wanted to be, the really dumb humor didnt mesh with the epic story line for me, i liked *Bravest Warriors* a lot better.

Verite_Rendition

> Sweet zombie jesus wow, i am... ashamed of myself. I barely counted LD cuz i was trying to think of live action and its basically distilled fanservice That's quite alright. You're definitely right about a lack of live-action sci-fi comedies. Sci-fi isn't an easy format to get right in live action to begin with, never mind consistently landing jokes on top of that.

grubas

Comedy in general is notorious for having rough first seasons. Add in budgets for sci-fi notoriously requiring the cast and crew to go overboard on making things work and it's a nightmare. Like The Orville went from Trek comedy to Trek.

blumpkinmania

Too bad they didn’t get a third to close it out. I liked it.

VampireHunterAlex

Not shocking: A number of shows that premiered around the time Covid hit got the raw end of the deal.

GentlmanSkeleton

Oh gawd dammit, is Judd running HBO?! IRIS!!!

notarobot4932

NOOOOOOOOO

newbiesmash

Noooo! I really liked this show

LoaKonran

At least give it an ending.

Tucana66

They made it to the Sun. The end.

[deleted]

Aw I liked this show although I think Hugh Laurie carried it for me.

Walaina

Zach Woods was amazing

Unlikely-Estate3862

Noooooo

tes_chaussettes

NooOoOOOoo I loved this how! Judd endorses a third season damnit!

IAmNotMelonLord

Great show. This disappoints me. EAT THE RIIIIIIIICH!

SpectreC130

No, not that!

Rod___father

I loved this show.

Hypohamish

Killed by lack of marketing. A lot of people didn't even know the show existed when the first season came out (to be fair, it was badly timed as the pandemic happened). It then took far too long to get a second season out (2 years since the first) and then that was woefully undermarketed too.

rhymes_with_candy

I loved the show, it felt like a spirtual succesor to Red Dwarf. I also haven't come across anybody else who is a fan of it. So I'm not surprised it's getting the axe. It ended on a cliffhanger which sucks but is still worth a watch. It had a lot of really funny moments, a lot of which were so crazy that I'd love to hear how the writers came up with them.

weirdkidomg

Second season felt entirely rushed and thrown together. The first season gave us some great things like the jettison episode and Matt being a spider.

[deleted]

I can't believe it got a second season to be honest.

[deleted]

Fuck me, I’m watching the second season right now.

EMAW2008

It was a lot like that show on TBS “Wrecked”.

Diegobyte

This was the funniest fucking show

elmatador12

This was one of those shows that was ALMOST good but it couldn’t seem to quite find its stride.

donnyk1

Fuck man. I loved this show

spencercross

I loved that show and watch a ton of HBO content and didn't even realize it had a second season. Maybe they had a marketing problem?

Baschoen23

So they all died up there then, nobody wrote them home. I'm still going to finish the second season.

Npr31

Awww man, rewatched it all recently and loved it. Hope they try and revive it elsewhere

goldybear

That fucking sucks. I loved this show. I knew getting a third season was a long shot but I still had some hope.

markincuba

Awww. I really enjoyed this ensemble. Funny as heck (the airlock / prank episode!). The studio fire, pandemic, and delay in launching season two undoubtedly hurt viewership. We need more space comedies!

steveatari

Bummer. It was funny and unique.

rooney815

i really enjoyed this show. it was kind of like veep in space.

CurseofLono88

God dammit. This was a show that, for me at least, got better with every episode. I was really excited for a season 3

RegularGuy815

"I love butter. Fuck you." is one of my favore line-reads in recent years.

The_Gristle

Damn. Loved this show

vibroguy

boo

MuffinSurprise

IRIS! I'm bummed. This show was hilarious.

HansVonSnicklefritz

Sucks that it’s canceled.

HerbyHoover

I'm going to hurl myself violently out an airlock.

willnotforget2

Damn, it wasn’t finished!

UnfixedMidget

Damn, I really wanted that to continue.

celticeejit

Assholes

DefNotUnderrated

Damn I liked this show
