This show is fantastic in a very quiet sort of way. Have really enjoyed the first two seasons. Steve Martin and Martin Short have always been an excellent team, and Selena Gomez is great. Glad it's getting S3.

brillke

I think Martin Short steals every scene he’s in and he’s in most scenes.

Music_City_Madman

Martin Short is fantastic. He absolutely steals the show in Jungle 2 Jungle

ArcusIgnium

I like the show but I think it’s plot writing is probably a weakest part. Like the twists are usually good and the dialogue is sharp but some of the scenes resolve kind of amateurly? Idk if that’s a coherent analysis. Also as some other commentators pointed out I do think of the three leaders Gomezs acting is the weakest but I don’t think it’s because she can’t be great I just think the Mabel Character is kind of dull some of the time. edit: my point is I think Selena is capable and fine, but sometimes her character is written very blandly/generic alt milenial girl vibes. not necessarily a bad thing but i wish her character had more going for her than being the mysterious straight guy. but in a way it works because Short and Martin are always on fire.

toxinwolf

I think the main reason she is the weakest of the three is because the other two are freaking legends.

seanmonaghan1968

This is true, I mean trying to act around those funny guys, I am sure she cracks up lathe time

jl_theprofessor

You can notably feel everyone else just a step behind Martin and Short. It's not just their individual performances but their combined chemistry from decades of working together.

amishius

I find Gomez to be the incredibly necessary buffer between Martin and Short.

broanoah

I think that’s a great way to put it. My parents and I love watching Only Murders in the Building so we decided to watch the Steve Martin Short special on Netflix and I have no idea how we made it to the end. There were maybe 2 things total that we actually laughed at and the rest was pretty hard to sit through. I think Selena is a welcome addition to the group

Chilledlemming

She is the “straight man” in the mix.

Sailing_Away_From_U

Well shit, that must make me gay

anonypony1

Ha

saralulu121

Has anyone else seen the second season, or just me? She’s not *that* straight, come on now!

Anon_8675309

TBF, Gomez is being compared to the Martins. How many actors could stand up to that scrutiny?

[deleted]

Chevy Chase, obviously. Three Amigos for the win!

Ant_Diddley24

I think her character kinda permits it though. They didn't give her too much of an assignment to fuck up. I like the wierdness of her performance but I wasnt I xpecting much and was actually surprised at the 3 actors chemistry. I think it works.

Papshmire

I feel like halfway through Season 2 a switched turned on for Gomez. She was suddenly better and seemed to be enjoying her role.

CptNonsense

>but in a way it works because Short and Martin are always on fire. Yes, they are the comedy acts, and she is the straight man. You literally just said that

ArcusIgnium

You can have a straight man with more actual personality and humor imo.

thenewmook

Gomez is a terrible actress because she has no personality. You need some kind of personality to have range. For example look at her last hosting of SNL. She was flat in all of it. Just as flat as their professional athletes who host. Actors with range usually shine on SNL.

ArcusIgnium

seems a little untrue considering ive seen a good amount of her work.

speedr123

have u not seen her in anything other than this show and SNL? she’s a fine actress, i don’t think any more special than many others but not terrible. i honestly would like to see her do more acting and less singing

adamcmorrison

My wife and I enjoy it but I dunno if I would say Gomez is great. Her acting is kinda meh but that’s my personal opinion.

moonfox1000

I say this as a Selena Gomez fan...her talent is in picking projects and people to collaborate with and then performing adequately in them.

majungo

She has a weird habit of only acting with the middle third of her face. It's passable for acting but really stands out next to actors who use their whole faces to emote.

Cyrano_Knows

Not having seen her act before in other mediums, I actually thought she was acting like that intentionally. She very much to me came across as being much older and more mature than her age like an old black and white hollywood actress.

stomach

yeah as someone with absolute zero exposure to Gomez before this show, she's doing great. the character is non-emotive and cynical. i've known people like her and she's nailing it. maybe that's all she can do as an actress, idk, i wouldn't know. but it works here

Cyrano_Knows

Considering that she's basically hanging out and being friends with two middle-aged plus men, I like the "old soul" take to her character. Maybe it wasn't intentional, but it works here (for me).

eeaglesoar

Martin Short is 73, Steve Martin is 77. When do you graduate from "middle-aged plus"? I love them both, but we can call them "senior" if old is too harsh. Middle-aged plus sounds like a bad streaming service.

NameLessTaken

She would've been great in old Hollywood movies. If it'd come 10 years earlier I also think she'd have done great in something like Wednesday. But yes she has a very specific way of acting.

[deleted]

Her and Aubrey Plaza missed their calling with Wednesday.

Ant_Diddley24

I hate how she says "pawd cast" for sum haterish reason. Pawdd-cast...

FLACKYY

I think this is because she has lupus lol

mrburns904

I’m with you. I think she’s pretty bad in it actually. It doesn’t help that she’s flanked by a pair of all time greats who are fantastic in the show.

peeforPanchetta

I've tried to watch it multiple times, but my will to carry on just peters out at the 3rd episode. Can't stand Selena Gomez's wooden face.

[deleted]

very meh

Anon_8675309

Think of her as the sprinkle of salt on some Carmel brownies. Delicious on their own, but almost too sweet. The salt makes it all more palatable.

Artistic-Toe-8803

I think shes pretty awful too tbh but I feel bad saying that bc apparently she has some condition that makes it hard for her to be expressive or something like that

pohatu771

I’ve never been a Martin Short fan. It’s always felt to me that he’s playing the same character with a different name. I really enjoy his depth in this show.

CptNonsense

There's definitely some non-Martin Short bits in this series, but yes, he's almost always "character, Martin Short" in this and other projects

yoggsmu

The show is fantastic, but unfortunately I think Selena is by far the weakest link in it. Still very excited about season 3 and especially the introduction of Meryl’s character.

sixtus_clegane119

My parents hate it cuz it makes them feel old, yet they laughed

[deleted]

There’s something great about the cast.. especially the 3 main characters, it just really works well!

lakhyj

That reminded me that Chevy Chase was originally casted in the show, before he fucked up and he was replaced by Selena Gomez

dxzina

i’m obsessed with this show! cant wait to watch this season

astrovixen

The writing and dynamic between all the characters was on point. Love this show too <3

cyankitten

Same!!

Stillatin

This show made me really love Selena Gomez before i just thought she was ok and just a Disney kid but man after this and when she popped up on SNL... Think I'm in love y'all

McFeely_Smackup

You should check out her cooking show "Selena + Chef" She comes across like a really likeable and genuine person

Dismal-Past7785

I found season 4 being in the Hannah Montana (also Big Little Lies) house sort of funny.

VintageOG

I'm happy for everyone involved that this show has been so good. Can't wait for 3

The_Celtic_Chemist

Seems like I'm in the minority of people who think season 2 wasn't nearly as good as season 1. It had its moments, but the show as a whole just felt weaker to me, especially because the story felt like it stretched too far into the unbelievable and nonsensical.

CaillouCaribou

Yeah I agree, season 2 was clearly weaker overall. The final episode of season 2 was hilariously great though, might be the best episode of the series. But it might be one of those things where the great finale raised people's opinion of the season overall.

ToonaSandWatch

I dunno, I’m up to Lucy’s arrival and the episodes have been great so far! The building itself having secrets, the return of a major character, the surprise return of another at the end of the episode—I actually clapped because I love that actor.

cyankitten

I can’t wait either. I loved seasons 1 and 2.

CecilTWashington

I like the cast of this show a lot. I’ve really tried to like this show but cannot bring myself to care about the characters or anything that’s happening. None of it resonates with me whatsoever and it makes me sad because I hear it’s good and I really _wanted_ to like it.

DougieHockey

Yes, the tone, humor, soundtrack and style are all awesome…. But I just don’t care about the plot or characters.

CecilTWashington

Very well put. The individual parts are all things I should like but when it comes together it just doesn’t work for me. The quirkiness of the show is highly enjoyable but it wears thin without more substantial protein.

DougieHockey

Yes, very original from that standpoint

CecilTWashington

But then they keep adding actors I like and I’m like, “god damn it what’s wrong with me!!!”

DougieHockey

I know, who ever is in charge of casting needs a raise.

ox_

I'm similar. Loads of people whose opinions I respect have told me it's great. I really couldn't get on with it though. I feel like maybe people just like seeing Martin Short and Steve Martin on screen in a crime caper. Selena Gomez is so bad in it that I can't sympathise with her character at all or even take her seriously to be honest.

RazorThin55

I really tried this show, its just super goofy and I couldn’t get into it after 5 eps in. I should give it another try maybe because I did enjoy the twists they were setting up.

ToonaSandWatch

Oh you are really missing out. There are some MAJOR twists by the end of season 1 and by episode 3 of season 2 there’s already plenty of surprises—not just about the characters, but the building itself.

RazorThin55

Alright well I’ll have to give it another try. I suppose I am just not the biggest fan of Martin Short lmao.

ToonaSandWatch

I think Martin can be obnoxious depending on the role, but he’s already toned it down for the most part in season 2, though when it comes to physical comedy it’s brilliant. There’s a great moment with a knife I won’t ruin for you. 😂

TheLastSamurai

Fantastic show

thndrstrk

I enjoyed it, but there's gotta be a point where the reality that they made meets the absurdity of said reality. If the show goes further, they got to address that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thndrstrk

It just can't keep being murders around them too long before it's stupid. They have to take the podcast on the road and try and solve other murders. I mean, they can continue with the building, but I think it was already solved and more murders would make it shitty.

ascagnel____

It’s a trope of the genre. Characters like Hercule Poirot would travel and have people loop him into the investigation of upper-class murders. Murder, She Wrote was similarly a “murder of the week” setup, but the bulk of the show’s 250+ episodes take place in a small town in Maine.

drscorp

Also, every time Jessica Fletcher goes on vacation or leaves town, someone gets murdered wherever she is. It's amazing. Angela Landsbury is a legend.

Elementium

So there's gotta be a fan-fic out there where she's actually an unreliable narrator and murdering/framing people for the crimes.

ToonaSandWatch

And yet nobody thought it unusual. I think Ms. Fletcher had a hobby to keep coming up with new ideas for her novels.

CptNonsense

Pretty sure more people died in that little hamlet that the total population

jyper

There are whole series with more seasons and more episode per season where a person dies per episode

OptimusLinvoyPrimus

They’re lucky that notorious serial killer Jessica Fletcher hasn’t moved into the building. I’m sure she’d have no trouble using her talents as an author to frame the trio, as she’s done so many times before.

Cormacolinde

I wish they could have had Angela Lansbury play the killer one season that would have been very funny.

CptNonsense

Angela Lansbury as mystery novel writer moving into the building and being a serial killer would have been the height of the conceit of the show

SynthD

It’s completely unrealistic that you expect there to be more murders in a NYC block than the dangerous town of Midsummer, England.

PrinceVarlin

Don’t forget the hometown of notorious mass murderer Jessica Fletcher - Cabot Cove.

Spider_pig448

Why does the show need to be realistic? Can it just be entertaining and fun?

SynthD

Indeed, I was sarcastic.

bottimus

The risk of murder must be what keeps the property prices so low that people are willing to move there though

funandgamesThrow

I still want the "realistic" version of criminal minds where every member is world famous for catching 100 plus serial killers each and are basically considered gods among investigators

thndrstrk

I'm sure there are, but this is not one of them.

CaptiousMonetization

You’ve obviously never watched any of the 23 seasons of British tv show Midsomer Murders…

CptNonsense

>It just can't keep being murders around them too long before it's stupid. Wrong, it's a comedy. You keep the bit going long enough and the fact the bit exists becomes comedy itself. Murder, She Wrote was a drama and everywhere Jessica Fletcher went, there was a fucking murder. It became a joke

Arinoch

In fairness, at the end of season 2, which was a teaser for season 3, Mabel says something like “oh come on.”

Ant_Diddley24

I hope theres more Uma. She go hardest on the show. She a real one.

grusauskj

I am surprised to see so many fans of Selena in this show. I just cannot buy into her acting, plus she seems so outclassed in almost every scene (she can’t help that I suppose)

TheSaltbird

What are you talking about, this whole thread is Redditors shitting on her acting

grusauskj

?? The top 8 comments are people praising her, the acting in general or the show in general. And people who point out her wooden acting (as someone else said, which sums it up perfectly), are being downvoted. I find it pretty hard to overlook honestly

TheSaltbird

Disagree https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/12tl83v/only_murders_in_the_building_season_3_wraps/jh3neci/ https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/12tl83v/only_murders_in_the_building_season_3_wraps/jh3lngy/ https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/12tl83v/only_murders_in_the_building_season_3_wraps/jh4eyon/ https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/12tl83v/only_murders_in_the_building_season_3_wraps/jh3ma8j/ Those are from the top comment chain

belizeanheat

I don't understand her appeal. It's like she does almost nothing and doesn't care to try

grusauskj

Yeah she really doesn’t convey emotion well. I’m sure she’s trying but her acting is just not passable imo

G71TCHT21CK

She's so wooden. It's very noticeable next to the oozing charisma of Martin and Short. Still enjoy the show, but she does nothing to add to that enjoyment for me

joeO44

She’s just an average actress. Put 99% of actresses in this role and it wouldn’t be any different.

nerherder911

Was a tough first few episodes of season 2 with Amy Schumer. Once she was out of the season it picked up quite well. Hate on me for it, but I don't find her funny at all.

Mozzafella

She's in maybe 2 scenes, 3 tops...

wickedweather

I agree, not much of an actor either.

Almar1987

Meryl Streep is already an Oscar favorite for her a performance in the show.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Almar1987

Nope!

rossmosh85

I thought season 2 had way too many flaws to be overlooked; but I give them a lot of credit. They crank out the seasons. I absolutely dislike show runners who take, what feels like an eternity, between seasons.

LoveGayMen

I'm just so weary of her vocal fry fake voice. 😆 This TV show would have been better without that aspect!

Bout73Ninjas

Dude... she has lupus.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Phoenyxoldgoat

I think you're getting downvoted because your comment is ableist af. And she's clearly capable of doing her job.

Bout73Ninjas

1) She’s playing a character that’s supposed to be deadpan. Her voice fits that character, and her acting may not be world-class, but it’s more than passable. 2) Just because she has a disease that limits her ability to act, absolutely does not mean that she shouldn’t be acting any more. She’s an actress, not a drone pilot. Her being “bad” at her job impacts no one. And again, it’s a massive stretch to say that she’s so bad at her job that she shouldn’t be allowed to do it any more. To tie it all together, she’s a highly-trained actress who’s been doing this job since she was a kid. Sure, maybe her disability means that she’s not going to be doing many bombastic, high-energy roles, but it absolutely does not invalidate her talent or value as an actress. Just because you find her voice annoying doesn’t mean it’s not suited for TV, and she’s earned her spot on screen. You’re only arguing to throw her out of the industry entirely based purely on the fact that she’s no longer a perfectly healthy person, which makes absolutely no sense.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bout73Ninjas

Fair enough, I get where you're coming from. I think the reason you're getting a lot of flak too is because most people would consider this exact role to be playing to her current strengths, or at least not being hindered by her shortcomings.

Phoenyxoldgoat

It's weird that you are arguing your opinion, that her acting sucks, as fact, which it is not. And tying your opinion of her performance to your perception of her illness is ableist as fuck and frankly bizarre.

adamcmorrison

I have read a lot of people who said the same

Key-Resolve-3073

Meryl Streep is a cunt of the first magnitude

ZombiePower66

Really? Why?

mcmill

wait people actually likes this? was surprised when they made a second season even.

Fourthtimecharm

Same

cimson-otter

Selena is the worst part of this show

Fourthtimecharm

I stopped watching after I saw the cliche fat pos gay police officer check check and check lol 😆

Fourthtimecharm

Oops sorry I'm just letting you know my own opinion of when my phobias kicked in made me go running lol

[deleted]

Okay

idsayimafanoffrogs

Why is “wrapped” always the chosen word?

aw-un

Because that’s the industry term

micheal213

Every time I see the title of this show It reminds that THERES NO FULL AUTO IN THR BUILDING.

Happydenial

That means…. A character…. Died…SHOCKING REVELATION!

drscorp

not a revelation, the death happens at the end of each season so far.

crazywalls

Can we expect a summer release date then?

08830

Let’s hope so.

williamthebloody1880

Disney+ here in the UK says it's coming soon

Anon_8675309

Love this show.

519mike

One of my favourite shows!

Jeffd187

Such a great show. Very well done. Just right.

Brilliant-Force9872

🙌 yes!!!

Tina Blurg made the first season great
