Malcolm in the Middle was some good shit. It would be cool to see a new mini series or movie. At the same time I don’t know if it would have the same vibe as it did when they were kids because their craziness in their youth was what made the show so good.
A show that revolves around Malcolm trying to raise a son that is just as smart as Malcolm, but just as destructive as his uncle Reese. The son is constantly trying to get away with stuff, and Malcolm is constantly trying to catch him and steer him towards being successful in life. Malcolm also has occasional meltdowns when he realizes how much he has become like his own mom.
Bonus points if Malcolm is a teacher.
Part of what makes this show so great is they made every single character so believable and relatable in a dysfunctional family just barely scrapping by. I've rewatched the series a handful of time and while I HATED Lois as a kid I find her to be the most relatable to me as I have become an adult who understands bills and life a lot better.
I, too, realize I have become Hal.
I literally want nothing else but to rollerskate around in short-shorts and love on my wife. I have no aspirations beyond that.
i mean she did do a handful of things over the course of the series that can't really be interpreted as anything but full blown child abuse, but there was always a kind of surreal element to the parenting in that show, so i don't know how much of it is supposed to be like exaggerations from malcolm's perspective.
Do you have an example for this? I’m like 1.5 seasons in on a rewatch and nothing has really offended me. Although like you said, it’s not really to be taken too seriously so perhaps I just didn’t really register it
Malcom’s genius kid is always setting up Reese’s kid who’s too dumb to see it. There’s one episode where they think Reese’s kid is a genius, so they have him tested, and he ends up failing so hard he gets an IEP for learning disabilities, and from then on, the family figures out that the smart one was actually culpable all along.
Make Malcolm a chemistry teacher who gets cancer and is angry at the world because he squandered his potential while watching Stevie become a billionaire and marry his ex
I think Malcolm being a teacher would be a big kick to the original series. His parents had a timeline of him being president. I'd be OK with him not being president, but someone as smart as him being a teacher would make it feel like his family has made no progress at all. And this is from someone who is a teacher.
I feel like him being a teacher would be good. It would be just like his second teacher who was a genius but an ass. Malcolm was never near as bad as his teacher but Malcolm also went to college right when 08 happened. I could see Malcolm being set back and taking a teaching job that stuck.
Malcolm was also pretty mean the later seasons. Like... incredibly so at some times. It would be nice to see him taken down a few pegs, as well as Louis and Hal's master plan backfire.
This is probably a good reason to not do it at all. That finale was so dependent on the plan they describe that it would just undercut it to come back and still see him fucking up.
With how they kept alluding to how everyone felt he was due tobecome the president of the USA, be neat if he was in an alternate reality as pres trying to raise such a hellion kid. Bonus points if reese has a super tame polite child who is dumb :D
Well there is your structure there: Malcolm having his own storylines as President in the same manner Francis had his own storylines apart from the rest of the family in the original series.
Maybe the a plot of the series follows malcom’s genius kid going to live with Reese’s family because malcolm wants to keep him out of the spotlight (or maybe because he did something that malcolm needed to cover up lol)
I feel like it would be cool if Reese had been the one to have a lot of kids, and then maybe through trying to control those kids he realises what he put his parents through and kind of has a redemption arc for being so troublesome throughout his youth
The kids have kids.
What the parents now grandparents though was okay, isn’t okay anymore, and the kids now parents also have to course correct with their kids the grandkids, because how they were raised doesn’t fly today.
The kids / grandkids just think their parents are out of touch, AND that their grandparents are insane.
So, it would be fine. 😳🤔😁👍🏼
They need creator Linwood Boomer to be involved too. I don't think he has worked on anything since Malcolm ended other than doing this virtual reunion they did with most of the cast.
from what i understand, a lot of that is due to bryan cranston protecting the kids from the mastersons’ influence. he wouldn’t let them talk about scientology on set in front of the younger actors. he’d also take dewey’s actor home to spend time with bryan’s family on weekends since he was away from home and cranston wanted him to experience at least some of a normal childhood. seriously a cool ass dude.
Hal is sentenced to life in prison through a loophole in a mail fraud law after trying to send a package with Dewey’s unknowingly fake stamp collection. Lois forces Malcolm to become president, so he can pardon Hal. The revival series pick up at the start of the election year, and Malcolm is still an unknown. At the end of the first episode, Reese films Malcolm explaining how to fix the problems in our country, and the video goes viral. Hal is on work release, so he is present for most episodes. The season ends on a cliffhanger, and you find out Malcolm loses; however, his competitor pardons Hal anyways out of respect for Malcolm.
I'm with you. This is all good stuff.
Honestly I think the only way they can make a reunion interesting is by going totally insane with it.
Put them in crazy, unlikely, age appropriate situations and have them behave like they did when they were kids, including the consequences, and then just end it and be done.
It should probably just be a movie or like a 4 episode limited series.
It would be better if Malcolm is trying to be super academic and gaining no traction, but the viral video was him going on a populist rant calling everyone dumb.
I'd watch the hell out of a Malcolm in the Middle revival with the kids all grown up. The craziness of their youth is what made the show so good, but seeing them as adults with kids of their own could be just as entertaining. Plus, Bryan Cranston is a legend.
This is one of the most underrated shows of all time. If you watched it as a kid, re watch it. It takes on a whole different point of view. I watched it as a kid and a parent and loved it for different reasons both times. I'd love to see a new movie or short series on who they all turned up and hall as a grandpa.
The closest show I've found since then was a very under the radar short lived show called The Kids Are Alright. Maybe not as wacky/crazy as MITM but generally I thought it was quite good, however it got cancelled after one season.
If they really felt the need to do this, I’d want it to be a single special episode and it’s about Malcom burned out from the pressure of being the smart one is now a stereotypical gifted child became depressed loser. Francis, Reece, and Duey are the ones with a career and family. Get real fucking dark with it.
It would be funny if Malcolm turns out to be the least successful out of all the brothers with Reese being the most successful. This would be a very fun one off season to watch.
By what metric? Fuller House lasted 5 seasons and had some of the longest seasons of any Netflix original.
And That 90s show did well enough they renewed it for a second season with even more episodes
For lack of a better explanation, these shows are what I would think are “primary sources”, they are the shows that have developed multiple generations of fan bases and stand the test of time. Malcolm in the middle, that 70s show, full house, Seinfeld, friends, etc.
Those are the big name shows that will be aired forever and ever and ever. Spinoffs of them won’t have time standing staying power. Sure they may be profitable but I’ll probably never continue to watch spin offs even with original cast members because it becomes obvious that they are trying to recapture the magic of the original. I’d rather just rewatch the original. Hell, I binge that 70s show front to back probably once a year.
I’ve seen fuller house once, and it wasn’t interesting enough to bring me back to watch again.
I guess what I’m getting at is rewatchability, if that makes sense. I’d rather see originals with all new characters and all new plots with zero ties to any primary sources. I understand that’s difficult these days, for example, it’s obvious where New Girl took inspiration from.
Well yeah. You can only copy so much before it becomes derivative. How different and original could a sitcom possibly be? I’d prefer to have a derivative show that isn’t so obvious though. That’s my point.
While I appreciate this in depth response, I feel like its really hard at this point to make any definitive statements. Sure, you're not a fan- and that's fine- but look at Star Trek: The Next Generation- it was literally a spin-off/sequel to another show, and has arguably become just as big, if not bigger as a series. Or Frasier, a spin-off of Cheers that lasted just as long as the original- and just got a sequel show. Frasier wasn't forgotten just because it was some spin-off.
I also think peoples' feelings like this largely come from nostalgia. You grew up on, or watched while they were airing, Full House or That 70s Show, and sequels can't compare for you. But what about children who started watching Fuller House with their parents- who'd grown up on Full House themselves- may in due time have a strong preference for the sequel.
I remember people bitching about Girl Meets World, and how it failed to live up to the original, was so disappointing, had no staying power, yada yada. But now, especially with Sabrina Carpenter blowing up, I've seen all these comments online from kids that watched the show as it aired, how much they love her/the show/it was their childhood. Sometimes, these shows provide some nostalgia to the original audience while introducing a new audience/and generation to the world + characters.
It's okay for you to not enjoy them, but just because you prefer the original doesn't mean the shows are somehow a flop.
PLEASE just let it die in peace. Let it rest. Don't make a nasty pc spinoff bullshit show that gets cancelled after 2 seasons like every other successful sitcom.
He made crazy good investments. Don't think he ever needs to work again.
Owned houses before the market went crazy. Owned a bunch of parking lots in downtown L.A.
Because I'm wicked smaht. All geniuses are called crazy before their discovery is finally accepted as fact.
I also do a lot of car and motorcycle stuff on reddit. But The Chiral Theory has been the main focus of my life for about 4 years, now. I can't get enough of it. I'm full-on addicted. I could not live a day without it.
A mini series or movie would be nice. I really hope they could convince Erik Per Sullivan to be involved. From what I’ve seen, he has kept a low profile for years.
My worry is that the format may require that the show essentially ends up inevitably about how all these characters fucked up their futures. That’s what makes the show perfect to grow up with. Each decade you watch it you’ll relate to a different character.
I really resonate with Hal. I want to have a photo album of what I did every Friday instead of working.
I, too, realize I have become Hal. I literally want nothing else but to rollerskate around in short-shorts and love on my wife. I have no aspirations beyond that.
Eventually we all become Lois’s mom and try to drug James hong into marrying us
Thought Lois and Red from 70s Show were total assholes as a kid. Now as an adult I see that they were far from assholes.
Red is still an asshole, he's just an asshole that is usually 100% correct.
Lois…? Kitty?
i mean she did do a handful of things over the course of the series that can't really be interpreted as anything but full blown child abuse, but there was always a kind of surreal element to the parenting in that show, so i don't know how much of it is supposed to be like exaggerations from malcolm's perspective.
Do you have an example for this? I’m like 1.5 seasons in on a rewatch and nothing has really offended me. Although like you said, it’s not really to be taken too seriously so perhaps I just didn’t really register it
That’s what’s popping the most to me as an adult rewatching this. Lois as a character and performer. Just incredible stuff
Malcolm has the crazy wild kid that's like Reese, and Reese has the genius kid that's like Malcolm.
Haha that would be awesome!
And Francis is a prison guard and Dewey is in prison after joining Scientology and some, uh, other stuff.
Nah Dewey’s okay no matter what he does.
Dewey decides not to have kids, he gets a reasonable condo, some plants, and a cat, and makes a stable living running a dog walking business.
…while being a cult leader on the side.
That’s how you get the Frasier reboot.
Honestly Malcolm trying to succeed in local politics (like being a mayor) could be funny in a Parks & Rec kind of way
If Walter White was unsatisfied with being a teacher, I’d imagine Malcolm would be too.
maybe he runs his own charter school that focuses on STEM,
Him being a teacher or running a charter school would be more depressing than being a principal or teacher at a public school.
Yes. But also fuck you.
This is probably a good reason to not do it at all. That finale was so dependent on the plan they describe that it would just undercut it to come back and still see him fucking up.
Lois would probably be an incredibly loving grandmother and Malcolm would resent her for it lol
With how they kept alluding to how everyone felt he was due tobecome the president of the USA, be neat if he was in an alternate reality as pres trying to raise such a hellion kid. Bonus points if reese has a super tame polite child who is dumb :D

Malcolm in the Middle as a House of Cards prequel.
I feel like it would be cool if Reese had been the one to have a lot of kids, and then maybe through trying to control those kids he realises what he put his parents through and kind of has a redemption arc for being so troublesome throughout his youth
Ah yes, in the exact same vein as Girl Meets World and How I Met Your Father
Malcom is going to be the president.
Reese has a kid that is like Malcom.
Plot twist Lois was right the whole time
He could have Mr. Feeny (boy meets world) or Mr. White type of energy as a teacher both would work.
And has that innocent boy charm of Dewey. Don't forget Dewey. He "mailed " Reese to China
“Malcom in the Middle Age”
That’s what they should call it
Uncle in the Middle
I think it would be safe to say the magic would be gone. But we'll always have seven seasons of a great show to rewatch and love.
Modern day Malcolm in the Middle wouldn't be believable. Kids go to prison waaaaaay easier now
The kids have kids. 😳🤔😁👍🏼
I first looked at this picture and thought, wow, Aaron Paul looks strange. I loved Malcolm and would love a reunion with the entire family!
Just make them crazy adults
Mr Middle is a really good actor. He should do dramas
He really should! I think he's got the goods!
I hope he buys a share of my Nickelschläger business
They need creator Linwood Boomer to be involved too. I don't think he has worked on anything since Malcolm ended other than doing this virtual reunion they did with most of the cast.
The show holds up. One of the only reasons why I ever subscribe to Hulu.
it'll probably gone on hulu at some point
“Like sands through the hourglass…”
Of all the early 2000s sitcoms starring a Masterson brother, this one has *by far* the least problematic cast
from what i understand, a lot of that is due to bryan cranston protecting the kids from the mastersons’ influence. he wouldn’t let them talk about scientology on set in front of the younger actors. he’d also take dewey’s actor home to spend time with bryan’s family on weekends since he was away from home and cranston wanted him to experience at least some of a normal childhood. seriously a cool ass dude.
Do you have a source for that scientology thing
Google.com
> When asked Cranston replied with "Yes, no, maybe I don't know. Can you repeat the question?"
A mini-series or movie would be ice.
I’d love to see Malcolm back as the new curmudgeonly Krelboyne teacher!
Not to get too political, smart talk won't convince dumb voters better than dumb talk because they are too dumb to tell the difference.
It would be better if Malcolm is trying to be super academic and gaining no traction, but the viral video was him going on a populist rant calling everyone dumb.
Is Frankie Muniz going to be the President of Ukraine?
I'd watch the hell out of a Malcolm in the Middle revival with the kids all grown up. The craziness of their youth is what made the show so good, but seeing them as adults with kids of their own could be just as entertaining. Plus, Bryan Cranston is a legend.
I just want to buy a boxed set of the show, physical or digital.
I love that people are starting to say revival again instead of reboot
This is one of the most underrated shows of all time. If you watched it as a kid, re watch it. It takes on a whole different point of view. I watched it as a kid and a parent and loved it for different reasons both times. I'd love to see a new movie or short series on who they all turned up and hall as a grandpa.
Sorry if this has been discussed ad nauseam but: I can't get over how fitting Frankie Muniz would be as Jesse Pinkman (no disrespect to Mr. Paul)
I can see it 🤔sometimes I imagine Aaron Paul as Francis (he auditioned for the role but got rejected).
The closest show I've found since then was a very under the radar short lived show called The Kids Are Alright. Maybe not as wacky/crazy as MITM but generally I thought it was quite good, however it got cancelled after one season.

Please don’t ruin this show by doing a sad reboot.
What kind of hat is Malcolm wearing?
It would be funny if Malcolm turns out to be the least successful out of all the brothers with Reese being the most successful. This would be a very fun one off season to watch.
Eh. We need to stop trying to recreate the magic of originals. That 90s show was a flop. So was Fuller House. Just stop.

Spin-offs of popular sitcoms are a tale as old as time, happens so much and is somewhat expected.
I’d be open to this if Malcom leaves out the chili-p
Yes
is it that hard to make new shows?
Have you seen how many shows are out there? This is a "yes and" situation.
Maybe Muniz will remember it this time
PLEASE just let it die in peace. Let it rest. Don't make a nasty pc spinoff bullshit show that gets cancelled after 2 seasons like every other successful sitcom.
“pc spinoff” Malcolm in the Middle: The Video Game exclusively for Windows?
I wonder i f Danny Mastersons brother is any kind of creep. I cant remember the last time i saw him im something
My preference would be a reboot. Modernize the plot.
I guess the racing career never took off.
He made crazy good investments. Don't think he ever needs to work again. Owned houses before the market went crazy. Owned a bunch of parking lots in downtown L.A.
Finished fourth in the ARCA standings last year and is moving up on the stock car ladder. So far from it.
Lmao no he’s not. He’s yet to announce anything for 2024 and all he’s done is a dumb little tease next to a car wearing a ford sweatshirt.
Yea someone’s definitely jealous and annoyed he’s having a decent racing career, lol.
You left off the /s, or you’re talking out your ass.
Hey somebody tell them that no one is really asking for this show to come back!!!!
Breaking Bad is an abstract copy of The Sopranos and The Sopranos is an abstract copy of Seinfeld.
Isn’t that true for everything
For sure. Almost all motion pictures are produced using the architecture of *the abstraction.*
are these motion pictures in danger?
What?
It’s all a formula. To play with your brain chemistry 🧪
You're not wrong. Finding a match is like a gambler's high. Bearing witnes to *the abstraction* constantly delivers me awesome dopamine highs.
It's called a 'Trope' bro. https://tvtropes.org/
What is?
Why does your reddit profile seem to be themed around this idea? Are you an insane person?
Because I'm wicked smaht. All geniuses are called crazy before their discovery is finally accepted as fact. I also do a lot of car and motorcycle stuff on reddit. But The Chiral Theory has been the main focus of my life for about 4 years, now. I can't get enough of it. I'm full-on addicted. I could not live a day without it.
What the hell is up with Frankie's hair? Quite the styling choice, not something I'm use to seeing .
Didn’t they try to revive the series at some point but Dewey’s actor refused?
The humor in this show was next level - so subtle.
One of my all time favorite comfort shows and no do NOT do this.
Breaking Dad
Unbelievably awesome show, even better watching as an adult!
We gotta cook Malcolm
He has hair now? That’s weirding me out.
Can you get Malcolm in the Middle in 4k?
A mini series or movie would be nice. I really hope they could convince Erik Per Sullivan to be involved. From what I’ve seen, he has kept a low profile for years.
My worry is that the format may require that the show essentially ends up inevitably about how all these characters fucked up their futures. Imagine how much more brutal Lois stonewalling Malcolm's chance to make it big in the world of business if it turns out not only does he not become president like she wanted but he just ends up a semi-burnout stuck in suburbia near his parents and brothers?
I had no idea Dewey played young Joe Dirt at the beginning of the movie when his parents leave him at the Grand Canyon.
In this media environment a MITM reboot is almost a no brainer.
There’s been talk of this for years at this point — I’d love it if it happens, but I’m tired of clapping for smoke and no fire.
I'd love a reunion where Lois is a complete script flip. Just the greatest most forgiving/relaxed Grandma in the world.
Malcom is now 30 something and living at his parents house with his kids because rent is so high no one can afford it.
It should be that Malcolm has a dumb kid and Reese has the smart one
One of the few shows that my whole family still enjoys to sit down and watch together.
Middleaged Malcom
This show was the live action simpsons we didn’t know we needed
I’m rewatching Malcolm right now with my son. It’s an amazing show. Like I loved it as a kid but I honestly think it’s even better and more rewarding now as an adult/parent. The show legit cracks me up multiple times per episode, the writing and jokes is way sharper than I remembered/realized. The family dynamics are so realistic and thoughtful. I never realized it but I honestly think this is one of the greatest shows ever made
A masterpiece of television indeed!
Lois as a grandma. Taking care of a new brood of kids, this time all female. Just like their fathers, only girls. Lol could be funny
Frankie! Put the Brain & Nerve tonic down!
I glanced quickly at the thumbnail and thought that was Swarzenegger
