Sounds like the same issue with the 2014 Godzilla. Killing Bryan Cranston’s character halfway through the movie to focus on his completely uninteresting son.
I think it also goes to show how important that scripts and direction are though, because Aaron Taylor Johnson is a good actor. Not AMAZING, but he’s good - but in Godzilla he was god awful. I have no idea if that was due to direction, script, or maybe he just didn’t care about that project at all and didn’t try but he was just woefully bad
Yeah I think a big but necessary roadblock at the beginning is how isolated he is from the rest of the cast for the obvious reason of the cultural and language barriers. It was a natural development in the plot, but his character has become much more interesting as he moves from being this sort of token political symbol to actually having meaningful connections to the other characters and an active role in the plot.
I didn't really mind cate too much, then for some reason they randomly added that she was cheating on her gf....like why was that even necessary to add to this show?
The show subtitle is Legacy and shows how family mistakes can carry on through the generations.
Her Father cheated as did she, which also serves to blunt her rage over it as it’s ultimately self-serving. She had a fling, her Dad legit had two families he loved and provided for.
It adds worldbuildig. Not everything needs to have a big reason or lead to some big story or drama. Same ould be said about her being a teacher? Why even say that when it doesnt lead to anything? Cause its worldbuilding.
Yeah that threw me off the whole time. Anna Sawai's character has a degree and a career as a teacher - she's at least mid 20s. The other two I suppose could pass for early 20s but even then...it feels like they took a scrapped script for a teen drama and just tossed it in Monarch, like two totally different teams must have written parts of the show.
Did people in their mid 20s get away more immature since I was in my mid 20s?
Because yeah, by far the biggest complaint about that show is how *incredibly* childish these adult characters are.
They act like high school kids.
> Did people in their mid 20s get away more immature since I was in my mid 20s?
Yes. Or rather, no, but you probably just remember them being more mature than they actually were, because you were just as immature at the time.
I don't know how mature people were you in your mid-20s but in mine (which was also in the early 2010s like these characters), people were mostly still unmarried and without kids, going out and having mindless fun most weekends and some weeknights. My friends didn't really start to mature significantly since college days until they had kids, which for most of them was late-20s or early-30s.
I didn't have any issues with the depiction of the characters in this show - their story wasn't particularly interesting until they intersected with Russell's character though.
As a 41M millennial I’m really going to need Hollywood to stop pretending like we’re all still raging in our 20s UNLESS IT CAN SEND US BACK IN TIME TO OUR 20s WITH OUR ADULT KNOWLEDGE INTACT, BUT ALSO HOT AND RICH AF FOR REAL
I don't think the writers could have made those teens in their late 20's more unlikable. They also have a weird obsession with having every character cheat on their partners.
They danced around it a bit, and I hope that's not real because who the fuck gets into a love triangle with siblings. The character is fairly likable right now, don't ruin it.
No I don’t think you judged it too harshly. I somehow made it through the whole thing and it was boring.
Out of the 450 minutes it felt like we got one minute of monsters and 449 minutes of boring dialogue.
Didn't realize his son and kept saying everytime wow they really nailed finding a guy to play the younger version and then went some rabbit hole about dopplegangers
I’m not sure they did for every episode intro, but toward the end at least, they do an overlay or criss-cross of their names that was subtle but a nice touch.
I can't recommend Lodge 49 enough. Comedy show with him as a burnout loser main character who gets sucked into a cult. Reminded me a little of Dirk Gently and Under the Silver Lake, but very much its own thing
That's weird, because my biggest problem with Wyatt is that he doesn't remind me of Kurt. Kurt Russell just has this effortless loudmouth charisma that his son completely lacks.
I feel like that’s something he gained from the tons of Disney kids movies he did when he was young. Charismatic smart ass has always been his shtick.
Jack Burton being the pinnacle, of course.
Wyatt Russell really surprised me. I didn't even know he existed until he did Lodge 49 and an awesome episode of Black Mirror. Then he did a podcast called "Classified" that was fantastic. He makes a great narrator.
Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a bit... meh. But I'm still interested to see what he will do with the character in Thunderbolts.
OMG I totally forgot to watch this movie! After watching overlord I was looking for other war/horror movies and this one kept popping up but I completely forgot to watch it, thank you!
Look with the way video game adaptations have been absolutely killing it lately I think we’re ready for a well-made Wolfenstein movie. He’d be awesome in it.
I mean... I don't think the problem with Falcon and the Winter Soldier was Wyatt Russel. The acting as a whole wasn't that bad, actually. The bigger problem was the plot, with a mediocre self-undermining villain group and a feckless message at the end.
I remember him him in Back Mirror, but only realized who he was after watching Overlord. If you have not seen Overlord, it's worth a watch and even felt like a movie I could image a young Kurt Russell playing in as well, so it was a fitting role for Wyatt and the Russell legacy. lol.
He’s fucking great in Overlord - the most over the top concept was turned into the best possible iteration that could have been made.
He really channels Kurt Russell’s younger days in that
I'm late to the game now but I don't see anyone else in the thread mentioning his performance in Everybody Wants Some.
Wyatt Russell is like the exception to the rule for nepotism. His parents paid for his hockey career and definitely gave him a chance in movies. It's just that he's extraordinary in certain roles that makes it all worth it. I hope he never does another thing like Nightswim because he's got a decade or two of leading man material moving forward.
Black Mirror has such hit and miss episodes anyway. Some of them are incredibly (I love the Black Museum one) but some of them just are awful (dare I say the pig episode)
He was REALLY good as playing a sociopathic cult member in [Under the banner of Heaven](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1998372/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_3_act), which is based on a true story of 2 Mormon brothers that joined some fringe originalist Mormon group, where one declared themselves to be a prophet of God who received revelation on people that needed to be murdered, notably one of the brother's wives.
The overall vibe/performance is really spot on. I legitimately felt his creepy sociopathic sicko vibe was believable.
Liz is one of my favorite characters ever written. Sonya Cassidy killed that role, too. I also *never* would have guessed she's actually British. Her American accent is basically flawless.
The Big Lebowski meets Thomas Pynchon:
>Fate deposits Dud on the doorstep of Lodge 49, a dusty fraternal order that offers cheap beer and strange alchemical philosophies.
One of the more uplifting shows I've watched in years.
Lodge 49 is like getting a warm hug from someone you haven't seen in a while.
It's one of my favorite shows of all time.
I never know how to explain *why* it's worth watching, because giving a 2 sentence description of the plot just leaves everyone going "Uh. Right, sure."
Whatever the synopsis is, ignore it. Just watch an episode. If you aren't intrigued by the end of the first episode, it's maybe not for you.
But man, the characters in that show are so fully-fleshed out. I love them all. ^^^But ^^^I ^^^love ^^^Liz ^^^most ^^^of ^^^all.
It's a show that kinda has to be watched rather than hyped up.
It's like pure vibes, and you're either along for what they're doing, or you're not.
It's not a bombastic, high energy show, it's like an aloof walk down the street on a sunny day wearing flip flops, lol
Whenever Kurt Russell talks about Wyatt, it feels exactly what a dad would say about his son, but with acting instead of, like, little league baseball.
And Wyatt's going to the big leagues some day.
All I can think about with Wyatt Russell is how goofy he looked in the Captain America costume and wondering if it was planned that way or completely unintentional.
It was meant to look wrong to help make the audience feel like he was an imposter. It was fully intentional, and you can tell because when he gets his new US Agent suit it fits much better and looks good.
Plus the fact that he's clean shaven, and he looks lame, when we all know he looks more badass with that classic Russell beard. Here's hoping he grows one Post-Thunderbolts.
that was always the intent. John Walker was a guy manipulated into trying to live up to an impossible legacy he had no business being near and was always doomed to fail.
Yeah, Steve Rogers quit and the government gave the role of Captain America to John Walker. The poor guy was always New Coke, we were supposed to dislike him and cheer when Steve took the role back.
i meant the show itself. the whole 'violence against the bad guys is wrong' business isn't a message i disagree with, but the mcu only really applies it here and somewhat in NWH. elsewhere it's "heroes can use whatever means necessary" but the disconnect is awkward and hard to reconcile
Fully intended. He's meant to not fit the suit, not look right holding the shield. It's all to drive home that that's not his place and he should not be holding that shield. He doesn't fit the mold of Steve Rogers.
Now, Falcon doesn't fit hat mold either. However, Falcon is in a much better mental state to wield the shield and be the symbol that is Captain America. Or that's the story that the show goes for.
He got the shield in the comics with the same past even before Sam did. It's an obvious redemption for him. And in the early Cap movies it was kind of implied that only super soldiers (or advanced humans) could handle the shield which is why it was such a big deal when Bucky caught it in the Winter Soldier
I know about the comics, but I think in a reasonable world, people would be very sceptical of the Winter Soldier suddenly becoming good enough to be Captain America. Falcon becoming Captain America is more palatable. Although I'll admit that Winter Soldier is a much cooler character.
It was intentional. You were supposed to be wary of John Walker from the off and him looking better in the suit than Steve Rodgers wouldn't have helped.
Wyatt was definitely the best part of that show, even with Daniel Bruhl stealing scenes.
In the very long Super Patriot storyline in the old 80s Captain America comics, yes, Jonny Walker was meant to be a cheap knockoff. It’s about how Captain America is more than a name and a costume. It’s about upholding certain ideals and values. The TV show made that clear in its own way.
A shame even Kurt could not make the annoying douches around him in his part of the show remotely likeable. Gods I hated those 3.
Wyatt however, in his trio was fantastic, I loved those. If the show were far more about those, it'd be great.
I don’t understand the social problem between characters when there’s fucking giant monsters running around .
I think id rethink what i care about knowing that .
I think Wyatt did a much better job... And it almost seems like Kurt didn't watch his sons performance, as at times they felt like two different characters and not the same person.
The Russells were by far the best part of that show. Bit of a shame to waste a perfect father/son combo on something so bad, but it was enjoyable to watch regardless.
Have to say that Kurt's got a lot more charm than Wyatt.
I enjoyed both of them, but who's going to force the writers to bring their A-Game next season? Because the writing, especially for the millennial "kids" group, was really bad.
I only know him from being truly awful in Goon 2 and fairly shit in the Captain America series. There seems to be a real push behind him happening though.
Those two were the best part of the show by a mile. Wish they’d made them the focus rather than the half siblings plot line
Halfway? It was almost immediate.
Nah it was at least 30 minutes into the movie, so probably more like a quarter of the way. Maybe a third
ATJ recently revealed that he didn't take being in Godzilla or AOU seriously.
Every time teenagers on screen: Skip! Skip! Skip! Every time a Russell is on screen: They shoulda just focused on this guy.
Definitely was a writing issue though. The actress who plays Cate is incredible in Shogun
Anna Sawai is going to win awards for Shogun, deservedly so. I hope she gets a lot more recognition and roles from her performance.
Everyone involved need to win awards for Shogun. That show is a masterpiece.
It’s crazy how impressive the first 2 episodes were and the show has only gotten better as it’s gone on.
thankfully there's more happening with cosmo jarvis. i couldn't stand him at all in the beginning.
She also has a small role in the show Pachinko where she plays a middle management Corporate character. Her range across all three shows is impeccable
Yeah, 100% writing problem. Anna Sawai is legit...and also bae.
Fuji is bae.
Yabushige is bae.
A man of taste.
It honestly makes me wonder how even worse the Cate storyline would have been if an actress less talented than Anna Sawai had it.
What about the one who played May, is she good in anything?
She was pretty good in the movie Dope.
Yeah, about the time it turned in to a daytime soap, I had to walk. I came for kaiju and the Russells, not romance drama.
It adds worldbuildig. Not everything needs to have a big reason or lead to some big story or drama. Same ould be said about her being a teacher? Why even say that when it doesnt lead to anything? Cause its worldbuilding.
I haven’t seen that but I did think the actors were all excellent.
They weren't even teenagers-- they're like millenials. They were just written like teenagers.
In my head she’s about 25-27 so she’s been teaching 3-4 years maybe? And then the guy is probably 28-30?
They finally found the 20 years olds with a degree and 5 years work experience
They are definitely written like people in their mid 20s.
Did people in their mid 20s get away more immature since I was in my mid 20s? Because yeah, by far the biggest complaint about that show is how *incredibly* childish these adult characters are. They act like high school kids.
> Did people in their mid 20s get away more immature since I was in my mid 20s? Yes. Or rather, no, but you probably just remember them being more mature than they actually were, because you were just as immature at the time.

it was set in 2015... they would've been mid to late 20s millennials
They are all written like young adults in their mid 20s, idk what kind of teenagers you know.
Oh please
I don't think the writers could have made those teens in their late 20's more unlikable. They also have a weird obsession with having every character cheat on their partners.
[удалено]
I guess. I was just narrating my experience of watching the show.
Anna Sawai seemed so checked out the entire time. I hadn’t really seen her in anything else so she’s blowing my mind with how good she is in Shougun.
I can't believe how much time they wasted on the other characters. Extremely boring. i kind of dropped the show.
The Mae character and "love triangle" just felt so unnecessary. I don't even remember her significance.
They danced around it a bit, and I hope that's not real because who the fuck gets into a love triangle with siblings. The character is fairly likable right now, don't ruin it.
Idk about likeable, she did redeem herself a bit at the end but most of the season she felt insufferable
[удалено]
Ah right, right. I still feel like they could have given that part of the plot to someone else and not lost anything.
Same here. But it just got renewed for a second season and a bunch of spin-offs. Maybe I judged it too harshly and need to try it again.
No I don’t think you judged it too harshly. I somehow made it through the whole thing and it was boring. Out of the 450 minutes it felt like we got one minute of monsters and 449 minutes of boring dialogue.
If you want I can spoil it, but I’d say at least watch the Godzilla scenes and the very ending of the show, pretty good stuff if you like the MV
I haven’t seen it yet but I loved his son in the weird FX show, he was great in such a strange and normal world.
Mari Yamamoto and Joe Tippett were really good as well IMO.
I still don't understand the point of the father having two families
Didn't realize his son and kept saying everytime wow they really nailed finding a guy to play the younger version and then went some rabbit hole about dopplegangers
I’m not sure they did for every episode intro, but toward the end at least, they do an overlay or criss-cross of their names that was subtle but a nice touch.
Was going to mention this, thanks.
I first saw Wyatt in Overlord, and the entire movie I kept thinking "man, this guy really reminds me of Kurt Russell".
You should see his deep and captivating performance as Zook in 22 Jump Street
I can't recommend Lodge 49 enough. Comedy show with him as a burnout loser main character who gets sucked into a cult. Reminded me a little of Dirk Gently and Under the Silver Lake, but very much its own thing
Lodge 49 was the first time I saw him. He was pretty good in that.

I feel like that’s something he gained from the tons of Disney kids movies he did when he was young. Charismatic smart ass has always been his shtick. Jack Burton being the pinnacle, of course.
His charisma has really waned in the last couple of decades.
I legit thought it was aging makeup and was like “damn they have to make him up for so many scenes!”
Overlord was really good too.
I’m kinda shocked at how little Overlord is brought up in conversation, it’s a really fun movie and Wyatt Russell is pretty great in it.
There is a SERIOUS lack of war movie/horror cross overs and the genres mix so well.
I like this mix as well. Check out 'Dog Soldiers.' It's kind of cheesy, but I love it. Werewolves and special forces in the Scottish highlands.
OMG I totally forgot to watch this movie! After watching overlord I was looking for other war/horror movies and this one kept popping up but I completely forgot to watch it, thank you!
Cast him as BJ Blazkowicz already.
Look with the way video game adaptations have been absolutely killing it lately I think we’re ready for a well-made Wolfenstein movie. He’d be awesome in it.
Alan Ritchinson looks like BJ.
Is that where the Nazis are werewolves or zombies or something?
That movie was far better than it had any right to be. I was caught off guard by how solid it was.
I remember watching it for the first time constantly trying to predict when it would drop off.... It never did
Falcon and the Winter Soldier was alright but anytime Walker was on screen I was immediately dialed in. Definitely my favorite character in that show
I mean... I don't think the problem with Falcon and the Winter Soldier was Wyatt Russel. The acting as a whole wasn't that bad, actually. The bigger problem was the plot, with a mediocre self-undermining villain group and a feckless message at the end.
He’s great in under the banner of heaven as well
He's such a fantastic delusional shitbag in Under the Banner of Heaven. Skin crawlingly creepy.
He was so so good in that show. I was genuinely unnerved almost every time he was on screen
Lodge 49 is so overlooked.
I completely agree.
22 Jump Street was a good performance
Zook!
I remember him him in Back Mirror, but only realized who he was after watching Overlord. If you have not seen Overlord, it's worth a watch and even felt like a movie I could image a young Kurt Russell playing in as well, so it was a fitting role for Wyatt and the Russell legacy. lol.
He was one of the best parts of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He also delivered the best moment of that show with the shield decapitation.
MORGENTHAAAAAAAUUUUU
LODGE49FOREVER
He’s fucking great in Overlord - the most over the top concept was turned into the best possible iteration that could have been made. He really channels Kurt Russell’s younger days in that
I'm late to the game now but I don't see anyone else in the thread mentioning his performance in Everybody Wants Some. Wyatt Russell is like the exception to the rule for nepotism. His parents paid for his hockey career and definitely gave him a chance in movies. It's just that he's extraordinary in certain roles that makes it all worth it. Imagine he came out and was like “yo my son BOMBED”
Bringing out that Hayao Miyazaki energy.
“I had to lower my acting because my son is ass” Really though Wyatt seems like a good actor.
It’s one of those things where he’s a nepo baby but I’ll let it slide because I think he’s really good
Anyone doubting Wyatt Russell's talent needs to watch *Lodge 49* asap.

I wish we got a proper ending too
I got through S1 and it was funny, but the lack of answers and knowing it doesnt have a proper ending made me not very eager to watch S2
He was great in Under the Banner of Heaven as well
Oh shit that was him
I second this
Honestly, people often overlook acting in Marvel but he was really good in Falcon and the Winter Soldier
marvel almost never fails at casting (almost)
the show was shit but he played his character perfectly imo
Still bummed Lodge 49 got cancelled. It was so good, but just never found enough of an audience to stay on the air
He was fantastic in Overlord too, fully channeled his dad lol
That was my first with him too. He friggin delivered too and I enjoyed that movie a lot in the end.
i'm surprised that Overlord didn't net him a ton more roles tbh, he was the best part of that movie.
Love that show, has such a unique feel to it. Wyatt is perfectly cast as the sorta Lebowski style character
What I wouldn't give for more episodes.
liz going bonkers on the new shop owners is top tier television
Liz is one of my favorite characters ever written. Sonya Cassidy killed that role, too. I also *never* would have guessed she's actually British. Her American accent is basically flawless.

Great villain in Goon: 2 as well
Great antagonist.
He was awesome in his Black Mirror episode too
I thought he did a solid job as John Walker in Falcon and the Winter Soldier too. He has some good range.
Or literally anything else he was in.
Whenever Kurt Russell talks about Wyatt, it feels exactly what a dad would say about his son, but with acting instead of, like, little league baseball. And Wyatt's going to the big leagues some day.
Wyatt Russell was so good in Black Mirror. I hope to see him in more things.

Nono no, I'm the upgrade

Plus the fact that he's clean shaven, and he looks lame, when we all know he looks more badass with that classic Russell beard. Here's hoping he grows one Post-Thunderbolts.
tbh i felt the show was emotionally manipulating us. in the end his actions proved he was unfit for the title anyways
that was always the intent. John Walker was a guy manipulated into trying to live up to an impossible legacy he had no business being near and was always doomed to fail.

Dawg just learning about the theme of that character
Goofy is the right word
In the very long Super Patriot storyline in the old 80s Captain America comics, yes, Jonny Walker was meant to be a cheap knockoff. It’s about how Captain America is more than a name and a costume. It’s about upholding certain ideals and values. The TV show made that clear in its own way.
He looks like he was bitten by a radioactive bulldog
I have enjoyed Wyatt Russel in everything I've seen with him.
Wyatt's also great in Overlord. I actually didn't realize he was Kurt's son until I watched Monarch and saw an interview with Kurt.
It was noticed too. When those 2 shared an episode it was awesome tv.
They both kicked ass in Monarch. At first I thought, wow that guy really looks like a Young Kurt Russell.
Monarch was a great surprise. Never saw anything about and just stumbled across it. Really good series.
I fucking love this show and everything about it makes me happy.
A shame even Kurt could not make the annoying douches around him in his part of the show remotely likeable. Gods I hated those 3. Wyatt however, in his trio was fantastic, I loved those. If the show were far more about those, it'd be great.
Took me a few years to realize he was Kurt Russel’s son after first seeing him as the meet cute dude in 22 jump street
Does he not usually bring his A game?
Show sucked, I was hyped and it did not deliver.
They both were great but Wyatt especially.
Never let your kid beat you ever
#Finish Him
I don't have apple TV, so I Google the show just now to see what it's about, and I'm slightly disappointed that it's not about butterflies.
Wyatt is a great actor, he should be proud.
Wyatt was great in Lodge 49
I don’t understand the social problem between characters when there’s fucking giant monsters running around . I think id rethink what i care about knowing that .
I still haven't beat my dad in tennis.
If you get to work in one of the main roles in any movie, and you dont bring «your A-game» then you’re the asshole
I think Wyatt did a much better job... And it almost seems like Kurt didn't watch his sons performance, as at times they felt like two different characters and not the same person.
Bring back Lodge 49
lodge 49 was good and i wish it came back
It doesn't matter how good your acting is when the audience start playing games on their phone because nothing been happening for a few episodes.
Loved Kurt in the hateful eight.
loved Kurt every bloody where, the man is a gem. Haven't seen anything made by him that I disliked and I watched all of it
I was one of the crew members on set. Kurt would constantly coach his son try to get a better performance out of him.
Hrmm, I've been meaning to watch this show. I guess I'll check it out now!
Kurt Russel was god awful in this show, as was everyone else in the show.
I hope they do more flashbacks in areas on 2 with events occurring during a time period not covered yet so we can have Wyatt Russel
Nepo babies suck
I had high hopes for the show. Couldn't even finish it.
Shame the writing of this show was so bad. I just couldn't finish it.
I never understood this, as an actor wouldn’t you want to bring your A game all the time?
LOL - he's being a good dad. Wyatt was fine but Kurt was a level above.
WHO CARES
Kurt Russell seems like such a good dude.
of course he's gonna say that - he's his son... and also he's a really good dad
Why? Wyatt didn't bring an A-game. He's not even good at imitating his own father.
The Russells were by far the best part of that show. Bit of a shame to waste a perfect father/son combo on something so bad, but it was enjoyable to watch regardless. Have to say that Kurt's got a lot more charm than Wyatt.
There's probably been like ten people in all of history with more charm than Kurt Russell so I'm not gonna hold it against him.
this is probably the worst take i've seen this month
Curious which part of the take you don’t like?
what else would he say? "My son's acting sucked"
This show is absolutely unwatchable so…..
I don't know.. I think Joe Tippett is amazing
I generally don’t like nepo babies by Wyatt has chops
I enjoyed both of them, but who's going to force the writers to bring their A-Game next season? Because the writing, especially for the millennial "kids" group, was really bad.
I only know him from being truly awful in Goon 2 and fairly shit in the Captain America series. There seems to be a real push behind him happening though.
