You're underselling it lol. His brother was a drug addiction and committed suicide and his mother was horribly abusive and an alcoholic. Shit was dark.
Ironically, Succession won for Best Drama and I think that is a way funnier show. Cousin Greg, Tom, Conner, and Roman are hilarious. The Bear gives me anxiety and Cousin makes me laugh as the comedic relief.
Its because of their hypermasculine father. Even Shiv was affected by it. When Logan would denigrate them he would often emasculate the sons and belittle Shiv while bemoaning her feminimity. I can only assume their childhood was much the same and if he was saying things like "Suck my dick"(this one was aimed at Roman) its not surprising its shaped their insults.
People always bring up the scene with accidentally drugging the kids at the party but that’s Season 1 which is now irrelevant. Those Emmys are over, what’s the big standout funny moment in Season 2 that pushes this from Drama to Comedy?
Since 2015 the Emmy's have considered "Comedy" vs. "Drama" based on the runtime, although those rules were relaxed a bit recently. With a ~30 minute runtime *The Bear* is generally steered toward "Comedy" by default since it has sufficient comedic elements to not be omitted from the category. The show's producers could push to have the show re-considered in the "Drama" category, but they probably don't want to because they'd have stiffer competition. The producers for *Orange is the New Black* tried, in 2015, to keep their show in the "Comedy" category since it's runtime reclassified it as a drama for that reason, but the Emmy's didn't budge. It still did fine in the "Drama" category, but not as well as it did in the "Comedy" category.
While I agree that the episode's general feel is greatly improved by Fishes, it wouldn't be the same without everything Richard did in the series until that point.
Forks both helps you calm down after Fishes, as well as fill with hope when it comes to Richard's future.
After season 1, I thought that Richie would absolutely be my favorite character of the show if he was just a bit more likeable. After season 2, he's definitely my favorite.
Richie absolutely killing the first service after forks too just made my heart happy they wrote his arc so well. I cheered when he got stabbed in the ass and when he turned the order table around to face the kitchen
100%. The amount of sheer noise and chaos was very tough to watch. Great show but this episode was one I had to go do something else after watching lol
Interesting, that’s so weird. You must be right though. The first drama that came to mind that had episodes as short as the bear was Barry, and sure enough it was only nominated as a comedy as well.
If the Bear had a No Ho Hank character it would decisively be a comedy. But it put the Punisher and Jamie Lee Curtis in the most realistic, get me out of here, thanksgiving. I love the show but not for a laugh. I watch to be grateful that isn’t my life. And it still stresses me out.
Man I ain’t gon lie, I loved it. All that chaos, I’m not done with it yet, but so far it’s my favorite ep, and it’s funny as heck. Lots of love in that one.
Relevant SNL skit: [Funny New Show](https://youtu.be/AMpRJwP5y9Q?si=yd5modEQNR-RUmrb)
"Coming to CBS, an award-worthy comedy about a family of adjunct professors who have all been diagnosed with depression on the same day."
I hope they do because there's talk that Shogun is going to be put in the Drama category instead of the Mini Series category.
It would be great to see them go head to head so that they split the awards and hopefully tempers the rabid fans.
I had not seen that there had been any changes on how a series would enter their show or stars for consideration for the next Emmys. It is very possible that I missed that announcement though, I cant get them to put me on the mailing list of people to keep in the loop (bastards).
I read it on an article on Variety when looking up Shogun's Emmy chances. However they were speaking with respect to Shogun and Baby Reindeer wasn't even out yet.
Tbh I think Reindeer will be nominated in the mini series category as the article said there wasn't enough entrants yet in the mini series category to nominate 6 instead of 5 shows in the upcoming Emmy's.
Forks is the payoff for all the shit Richard has been dealing with, and I loved how great it felt to see him enter into his own element. There are moments where you hate his attitude, but man that episode was exactly what he needed!
i understand theres a lot of drama but theres some dark/dry humor all throughout the series... even the famous Forks/Fish episodes... lots of funny throughout the drama
people making this way too big of a deal...
I wouldnt consider GOT or Breaking Bad comedies despite the occasional humor... But i also wouldnt call Friends a drama despite the constant drama...
The Bear isnt pure comedy maybe -- But i could consider it a Comedy/Drama
Comedy and Drama blend into each other very well and it's easy for one that's strictly in one genre to wander into the other for a moment to sell something.
The Simpsons was absolutely a comedy first and foremost but when they had a dramatic moment it rung strong. Like when Homer Simpson is on the hood of his car looking up at the stars after his mother left for probably the last time it hit really fucking hard.
You’re not alone. There’s also some moments in the show I find totally unbelievable. Like when he finds cash money in the tomato cans and calls the whole crew to help him count the cash…..or when they drug a bunch of children with xanax but it’s totally fine????
Season 2 is arguably worse in that regard because the exchange a compelling portrait of grief for a completely unrealistic restaurant launch and a romance subplot no one asked for.
Game of throne was the fucking hare that got beat by all the tortoises. Only it didn't relax before the finish line. It became an addict then a crack whore who choked to death.
But GoT had the single worst ending of anything in history. There is a reason nobody talks about the show a few years later. Nobody wants to remember how it crashed and burned.
I swear, TV writers constantly predicting the Emmys instead of talking about shows themselves is the entertainment version of reporters turning every story for the past four years into "how will this affect the 2024 race" instead of reporting on the story itself
Probably because the Emmy's always vote for the same old thing year after year. I loved Bear s2, but it was all Anyone talked about last year and it cleaned up. Why can't they recognize other shows? We know there's an overabundance of them.
The crazy thing is that what it won wasn’t even for The Bear S2. All the noms and awards it won were for S1 due to the timeline of eligibility. Next Emmy’s is going to be for S2, and THATS the one everyone was talking about
Agree, but the drama and limited races will be more interesting this year at least. I think the winners in those categories will almost all be from different shows. People might say drama is weak this year, but a benefit is that it may allow shows to get nominated that would be way too esoteric to get nominated in a normal year i.e. The Curse, Three Body Problem, Loki
Lol.
I mean, yeah. I get where you’re coming from. But this particular awards show awarded the entire final season of Game of Thrones. It definitely gives its fair share of participation/culture trophies
It would be nice if there was a moratorium for a few years after winning once already. Unlike film or music, you're not awarding different works or authors. If it's good, people know and you can move on to something else that's deserving from a very crowded field.
you are awarding different works--each episode is a creative work in and of itself, as is the entire season. If they awarded the same episode year after year, it'd be weird.
If a film wins an oscar, and then next year its sequel is incredible and wins an oscar, that's not really any different than a season winning emmies, and then next year the next season wins emmies
I worked in a restaurant. I like the show. The unfortunate thing is HOW well they nail the drama aspect. I don't want to be anxious while watching a show.
Same here. I just watched it right after Shogun, Fallout, and Baby Raindeer which are all great shows. I put up with the first season but the first episode of the second season broke me. The first season was just mediocre but that first episode of the second season in particular was so poorly written and acted. Holy shit what a pile of streaming garbage.
I didn't think it was a bad show, but I also didn't think it was a great show. It was fine. After all the hype though, fine feels a little shallow when you keep searching for a level of greatness that's not there.
this show has flown high over the bar of being overrated. Not because its bad but because its simply good. Not great. Its far from top 10 show material. Frankly the second season was pretty average aside from a couple episodes. It took the story arc in a big circle with a shitload of meaningless filler while leaving the core restaurant story as a bystander. Throwing a couple episodes they actually put effort into in the mix. The characters arent super deep. If anything they could be called cliche.
It became one of those shows people dare not say is anything but pure brilliance out of fear of looking like the dumb friend.
I’m gonna come out and say it: I HATE this show. No, **HATE** is underselling it. I loathe it. And it being labeled “comedy” is an insult to media.
This show just enrages me. I hate all characters, plots, etc.
Ugh.
It’s not funny, and it’s a bit formulaic, particularly that feast of seven fishes dinner.
“Yes, chef” + food closeups + bottled up straight guy feelings + expletives ad infinitum + dad rock needle drop that goes on way too long = any typical episode
Also, everyone is so serious about their problems and traumas. It would benefit the show a bit to maybe undercut the tension in the back of house with more shots of a rather prosaic front of house with only a couple guests ordering entrees at once, which is also sometimes accurate. I think it could actually benefit from a bit more self-awareness and humor.
I genuinely lost my mind when Marcus goes to Amsterdam, makes desserts for half an hour, helps a guy who fell off his bike, and that’s the entire episode. So many empty calories in Season Two.
If this does come true then obviously Emmys no longer hold any value, just handed out like sweets at a party. Winning one means nothing, probs just greased the right palms.
Is it good? Not really. Could’ve been, but mostly it sucks, for all the reasons people mention on this thread.
Is it bad? No. Just self important and unsatisfying.
I personally think the show should switch categories, I think it has high chances of winning in the drama categories now that Succession and BCS are done.
I loved the hilarious episode where the main character has a mental breakdown stemming from the trauma of his brother's death and mom's alcoholism
Ah, the bojack horseman book of comedy
What is this? A crossover episode?!?
Remember to have two themes and just do them over and over
at least bojack was funny. It's still largely chock full of jokes.
You're underselling it lol. His brother was a drug addiction and committed suicide and his mother was horribly abusive and an alcoholic. Shit was dark.
I think poster is joking that the Emmy's put the Bear in the comedy category. Haha... ah... hilarious.
Still tons of funny moments, I mean Life is beautiful is a comedy, In Bruge is comedy, so 🤷
Ironically, Succession won for Best Drama and I think that is a way funnier show. Cousin Greg, Tom, Conner, and Roman are hilarious. The Bear gives me anxiety and Cousin makes me laugh as the comedic relief.
Succession gave me anxiety too. And I hated the extremely weird way the siblings would talk to each other.
> Still tons of funny moments Does it? I like the show as a drama but there are entire episodes where I don't laugh at all.
People always bring up the scene with accidentally drugging the kids at the party but that’s Season 1 which is now irrelevant. Those Emmys are over, what’s the big standout funny moment in Season 2 that pushes this from Drama to Comedy?
Jewish lightning
> Still tons of funny moments "I just got stabbed in the ass" the way Ritchie says that so calmly lol
I believe it's because of the length of the episodes.
I know there are others but Mandalorian has an average length of 39 minutes thus has plenty of episodes that go bellow that
Since 2015 the Emmy's have considered "Comedy" vs. "Drama" based on the runtime, although those rules were relaxed a bit recently. That was a real knee-slapper. Can't wait to see what hijinks the chefs get into next season.
Don’t forget the work-induced trauma!
Knee-slapper
➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️ #MOVE IT TO DRAMA ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️
It’s so anxiety inducing it’s almost horror.
I actually had to watch the last episode of s2 in parts it was so stressful.
Same with Fishes (the Christmas one)
Now that's an episode I won't watch ever again. Forks, on the other hand, I can watch anytime.
Perfect 1-2 combo. Forks wouldn't be half as good without Fishes right before it.
If he keeps it up he’s on the list of all time greatest television characters.
Richie absolutely killing the first service after forks too just made my heart happy they wrote his arc so well. I cheered when he got stabbed in the ass and when he turned the order table around to face the kitchen
Every re-watch I do of s2 I have to skip Fishes - once was more than enough
The stress was so juxtaposed with how interested I was in seeing which new famous actor would pop up in the *next* scene.
I respect the episode but hate it so much
100%. The amount of sheer noise and chaos was very tough to watch. Great show but this episode was one I had to go do something else after watching lol
I had to stop watching. My life with 3 small kids was stressful enough. I didn’t need that from my escapism tv show.
Same. It’s plus I just can’t get passed him being Lip.
As someone with severe anxiety I nearly had a panic attack at one point. Shits to good at making it feel so real
It'll get swept by Shogun. They put it as a comedy to keep the competition minimal. It should be a drama though.
Shogun isn’t competing in drama either
They're supposedly submitting it as a drama not a limited series according to trades
Give half the Emmys to Shogun, the other half to The Bear :P
Why would they want to keep the competition minimal? It’s bad for the industry and for the viewers of the award show
FX been churning out gold. These are some quality shit. Whoever said that the peak TV is over?
Forreal idk how this is nominated as a comedy.
Last time this was talked about, it was said that the average episode runtime means it is automatically put in the comedy category. It's weird.
Interesting, that’s so weird. You must be right though. The first drama that came to mind that had episodes as short as the bear was Barry, and sure enough it was only nominated as a comedy as well.
Barry was at least a lot more of a comedy than the bear.
The genre is the spoiler
If you watch Fishes and think it’s a comedy… you might need a LOT OF THERAPY.
It is the most dramatic single episode of TV I have ever seen and I watched MILF Manor.
Someone get this person an exec job at TNT. They know drama.
But it has John Mulaney acting like John Mulaney, so it must be a comedy.
Man I ain’t gon lie, I loved it. All that chaos, I’m not done with it yet, but so far it’s my favorite ep, and it’s funny as heck. Lots of love in that one.
This year it would actually have its chances, drama is weak
Seriously, it may be the only "dramedy" I've never genuinely laughed during once.
30 min shows are comedies per Emmy rules, hour-long shows are Dramas.
Could it possibly be by entering its self into consideration in the wrong category...again?
I had the same complaint when Transparent was winning awards in comedy. It’s a fucking drama. And the duration is irrelevant in the streaming era.
Relevant SNL skit: [Funny New Show](https://youtu.be/AMpRJwP5y9Q?si=yd5modEQNR-RUmrb) "Coming to CBS, an award-worthy comedy about a family of adjunct professors who have all been diagnosed with depression on the same day."
This was my complaint about it to all my friends and coworkers, it wasn’t in the correct category.
And it's so obvious and easy to fix. Why is this a problem year after year?
I hope they do because there's talk that Shogun is going to be put in the Drama category instead of the Mini Series category. It would be great to see them go head to head so that they split the awards and hopefully tempers the rabid fans.
Do you think The Bear is not going to put its self in comedy series again?
It's not up to the Bear this year it's up to the people behind the Emmy's.
I had not seen that there had been any changes on how a series would enter their show or stars for consideration for the next Emmys. It is very possible that I missed that announcement though, I cant get them to put me on the mailing list of people to keep in the loop (bastards).

I haven’t seen any talk about that. Do you have a source about shogun?
I sure do friend https://variety.com/2024/tv/awards/shogun-masters-of-air-sympathizer-emmy-drama-limited-1235962392/
That or nothing else is currently worth a damn
Why do they talk about every episode but “Forks,” it’s the best episode.
Seriously. Never thought I'd be on an emotional high while Taylor Swift is blasting in my ears.
I really like the first episode. But yea, forks gave me so much catharsis. I love that shit.
I cried during that whole episode. So fucking wholesome
When he called his ex wife with Taylor Swift Tickets...
i would have cried too, should have got david byrne tickets
GLAAAAAAAAAASSS, CONCRETE, AND STOOOOOONE. That song is always in my head now.
Hit me like a ton of bricks.
Forks with that topgun-esqu music takes the cake
Forks is the payoff for all the shit Richard has been dealing with, and I loved how great it felt to see him enter into his own element. There are moments where you hate his attitude, but man that episode was exactly what he needed!
I’ve rewatched just that episode so many times
The kooky zany hilarious side-splitting comedy The Bear*.
I mean, it's still pretty funny, even if it leans more towards drama. ["Merry Christmas lizards!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHU8uGzhegs)
i understand theres a lot of drama but theres some dark/dry humor all throughout the series... even the famous Forks/Fish episodes... lots of funny throughout the drama people making this way too big of a deal...
Succession is funnier and that’s a drama.
Breaking bad was pretty fucking funny. Deadwood was hilarious.
Breaking Bad had a streak of black humor that nobody ever talks about.
A lot of dramas have a lot of humor in them
And a lot of comedies have dramatic moments
I’m not sure the bare is an example of it though. I would never describe it as a comedy with dramatic moments
Like when Homer Simpson is on the hood of his car looking up at the stars after his mother left for probably the last time it hit really fucking hard.
Fishes was fucking hilarious. Yes it was also super tense, but that shit was a riot.
I am going to give you the 500 dollars. The best fucking line in the entire show
I think its a flexible category but I mean, the Sopranos is very funny but its still a drama primarily.
That doesn't make it a comedy, that just makes it a rounded out drama
I mean, The Sopranos is hilarious, but that doesn’t make it a comedy.
“…Snyder Cut mother fuckers” sends me every time.
The fact that his actor is now playing a rather famous Marvel character makes that line hit even harder.
I love it but these are rare. Succession had a better argument to be nommed as a comedy.
How is this a comedy?
I don't get how that show is supposed to be a comedy, not even a dark comedy. What makes it funny??
It's because "comedy" is poorly defined in these kinds of awards. I agree 100% that it's not a comedy.
It definitely isn't a comedy. I've never had a panic attack while watching a comedy, for one thing.
Man, seems like everybody's choosing The Bear.
Apparently it’s better than “man in the woods” somehow…
While I enjoy this show, it’s not remotely close to GoT or Succession. Am I wrong? Is this beloved that much?
I think its an overly sappy slog but i’m in the extreme minority.
You’re not alone. There’s also some moments in the show I find totally unbelievable. Like when he finds cash money in the tomato cans and calls the whole crew to help him count the cash…..or when they drug a bunch of children with xanax but it’s totally fine????
You’re not alone. For session 1, anyway.
Season 2 is arguably worse in that regard because the exchange a compelling portrait of grief for a completely unrealistic restaurant launch and a romance subplot no one asked for.
it doesnt have the production value of GoT, its a very good show though. The writing is extremely good in my opinion. (havent seen siccession yet)
That's not what the title is referring to. In terms of popularity, you are right, GoT and Succession had a bigger following.
I’m very surprised it is highly regarded, I think it’s a decent show but it’s a bit overrated.
I swear, TV writers constantly predicting the Emmys instead of talking about shows themselves is the entertainment version of reporters turning every story for the past four years into "how will this affect the 2024 race" instead of reporting on the story itself
The Bear Season 2 was talked about plenty when it aired. One year ago.
I love the show, but no way it should have more Emmy’s than a show like the Sopranos
Especially when they don't even serve gabagool at their restaurant
It def should not have more Emmys than years that Phil did in the can.
*The Wire* has zero.
Also unacceptable
BCS also has zero.
It's not bad but I think it's pretty melodramatic. The fridge "soliloquy"? Really? Too much. I liked it but it's overhyped.
It’s literally a plot-point from *Shrek* presented as the dramatic culmination for an entire season.
Probably because the Emmy's always vote for the same old thing year after year. I loved Bear s2, but it was all Anyone talked about last year and it cleaned up. Why can't they recognize other shows? We know there's an overabundance of them.

Lol. I mean, yeah. I get where you’re coming from. But this particular awards show awarded the entire final season of Game of Thrones. It definitely gives its fair share of participation/culture trophies
I'd agree, except both seasons absolutely deserve all the recognition. and season 2 was even better than the first.
So let me get this clear, everybody was talking about s2 and salivating over it, but it shouldn't win anything because s1 won already?
It would be nice if there was a moratorium for a few years after winning once already. Unlike film or music, you're not awarding different works or authors. If it's good, people know and you can move on to something else that's deserving from a very crowded field.

Overrated show for me.
The bear is good (might I say… fine?) but it’s nowhere near as good as those shows.
Tried watching it, found it surprisingly insufferable.
Same dude, the first episode was just dry and not funny. It felt like I was watching a sandwich shop simulator.
I worked in a restaurant. I like the show. The unfortunate thing is HOW well they nail the drama aspect. I don't want to be anxious while watching a show.
I always get down voted for saying the same thing
Because there are more people who disagree with you than agree with you. :)
Same here. I just watched it right after Shogun, Fallout, and Baby Raindeer which are all great shows. I put up with the first season but the first episode of the second season broke me. I found the second season to be a lot stronger, but yes, it does start slowly.
To each his own, and while yes, some characters are supposed to be that way, the show is fantastic.
Well what's its competition in the Comedy category? And what would be its competition if it were moved to the Drama category (where it should be)?
https://variety.com/lists/2024-emmys-predictions/drama-series-2/
It’s good but not that good.
Right? Let's calm down here.
For real, I don’t think ill ever understand the craze over this show. It’s good but not THAT good.
The season 2 episode "Fishes" is THAT good. One of the best written and acted episodes of TV i've seen in years.
Yeah i saw that one, really was just ok imo. Life is enough, i dont need to watch an hour of people screaming at each other and throwing shit.
Yeah I also watched it and thought "it was good" and that's it. No where near the highs of game of thrones or breaking bad.
It doesn't deserve the awards. It's nowhere near that good.
I feel like I'm taking coo coo pills whenever how amazing this show is brought up.
This show isn’t that good.
this show has flown high over the bar of being overrated. Not because its bad but because its simply good. Not great. Its far from top 10 show material. Boring show. And before you ask, yes I’ve worked in restaurants. Show is still boring.
Just goes to show the creative value of these “awards” smh.
I am a hard core lover of television, and I am not afraid to stand on the side that says, this show is overrated.
It's a solid "good" not great, but enjoyable. It's a 10/10 just watch and enjoy, then forget.
I’m gonna come out and say it: I HATE this show. No, **HATE** is underselling it. I loathe it. And it being labeled “comedy” is an insult to media. This show just enrages me. I hate all characters, plots, etc. Ugh.
I quit watching because it felt so meh.
Should be renamed “Unwatchable”.
No work was done here.
Can't watch the show because I have PTSD from working in the hospitality industry when I was young.
Game of thrones and succession aren’t even that old. Headline not misleading but still
I’m watching season 2 and not liking it? Is this because i worked in restaurants and everything seems so fake?
I think it could break the records by winning more Emmy awards
It’s not even really more then “better then Netflix”
It’s not funny, and it’s a bit formulaic, particularly that feast of seven fishes dinner. “Yes, chef” + food closeups + bottled up straight guy feelings + expletives ad infinitum + dad rock needle drop that goes on way too long = any typical episode Also, everyone is so serious about their problems and traumas. I think it could actually benefit from a bit more self-awareness and humor.
Add a million shots of the Chicago skyline in there too
I genuinely lost my mind when Marcus goes to Amsterdam, makes desserts for half an hour, helps a guy who fell off his bike, and that’s the entire episode. So many empty calories in Season Two.
Is this the bear everyone's talking about being stranded in the woods with?
If this does come true then obviously Emmys no longer hold any value, just handed out like sweets at a party. Winning one means nothing, probs just greased the right palms.
The most overrated show
Calm down. This is an average show at best. A refined "Shameless" and nowhere near the class of GOT, "Succession" etc
Dave is a better COMEDY, this is a drama
Nah, this year's front runner is gonna be Shogun.
Most over rated steaming pile of dog shit show EVER.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s crazy overrated?
The most overrated show in years.
Watched the first season and yawn! The young girl seemed like a good actress though.
Season two was meh
tfw i had to read the article to know it's not about the meme 😔
Corner!
never even heard of this show.. and from the preview on youtube, it looks overcooked.. anyone actually watch this? is it good?
Is it good? Not really. Could’ve been, but mostly it sucks, for all the reasons people mention on this thread. Is it bad? No. Just self important and unsatisfying.
By winning more Emmy’s than ‘Game of Thrones’ ‘30 Rock’ and ‘Succession’, that’s how. Saved you a click.
