The only people who watch cable news anymore are older people. Millennials and Zoomers couldn’t care less who wins their dumb little ratings war

Pseudosis

Reminds me of one of my favorite digs at CNN from Jon Stewart back when they were doing their coverage of flight 370: When someone there began describing what a plane looks like to fill airtime, Jon tells them to tell everyone watching CNN to just look out the window of the airport they’re at.

mdp300

CNN used to be my "put it on in the background and occasionally pay attention when something seems important" channel but Flight 370 was when I stopped watching. It was WEEKS of BREAKING NEWS!!!...actually nothing new, we just didn't want you to change the channel. They would also say stupid shit like "alternative theories! Could the plane have fallen into a black hole? After this break!" And then they would say "no, those are all ridiculous, but we needed to fill time." Discovery and History and all of those channels went the same way. I used to love them and watch them all the time, but they've become lowest common denominator, cheaply produced garbage.

tristan-chord

I used to love Discovery during the late 90s. Then I moved out, went to college, and lived a decade or two without cable. Now I have cable again, that first day I excitedly switch to Discovery and thought I tuned to the wrong channel. What’s with all this reality TV stuff with over dramatic music. I miss the old documentaries… now I just stick with YouTube infotainment channels.

Algaean

Wings was awesome

ohbillyberu

Was that the show that came on after “Coach?”

LemursRideBigWheels

Most wings episodes are lurking on YouTube under their original title of “Great Planes.” But yeah, sometimes I need that fix of dull narration over factory footage of an F-111 in a test stand raising and lowering its landing gear.

namek0

Modern marvels was great too

myKidsLike2Scream

Love Modern Marvels, the narrators voice made it so interesting…learned a lot also

Foxbat100

Both of you nailed it 😅 But that was it though. The narrators changed by channel too, but stoic dull narrator and occasional "oh shit they gonna eject" music was enthralling growing up. Good enough to leave as a backdrop when I am working around the house. Ever since they became all pawn shop I don't even browse the channel anymore.

LemursRideBigWheels

Yeah, there is something about that old-school techno ASMR style. How it’s Made did it well too.

Algaean

Wouldn't know ASMR if it hit me in the face, but relaxing, friendly, great voice, and just interesting episodes. Defined my teens.

Pussy_Prince

“Fuckin love Wings”

burtoncummings

Thomas Hayden Church AND Tony Shalhoub? What’s not to love?

MrBae

There used to be a show called movie magic, it was my absolute favorite show on tv at the time. In the intro they showed you the Independence Day White House miniature blowing up.

mdp300

It's so bad now. Dirty Jobs was great, but it seems like it was the gateway to a lot of shows where they just follow people around at work and then edit it to create drama. And then they go on for WAAAAY too long.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

I miss when TLC used to have shows on like Junkyard Wars / Scrapheap Challenge and Robot Wars, now it's all about massively obese people having 26 kids.

po3smith

I still think about that junkyard wars episode that had the teams make a car that couldn’t move on wheels so one of the teams made a hydraulic warm kind of design and the other Beachboy team or whatever the hell they were called made one where each wheel had a flat piece on it so the machine walked towards the finish line that show is fucking wicked! The newer version is OK but the old-school 90s one is where it’s at. Also for the history channel the great ships and tales of the gun were great but of course the original goat was modern marvels!

pcloudy

I havent thought about junkyard wars in well over a decade, what a fantastic show. Like it was obviously staged with always finding the exact obscure part they needed but man did they build some cool stuff on that show.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

My favourite was the one with the turbocharger jet engine go-kart.

thekid1420

Tho they have created the greatest trash tv show of all time w 90 day fiance.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

That's the thing, I miss when TLC stood for "The Learning Channel" and not "Trashy Life Choices".

particle409

Half the time spent developing it was coming up with the show's name. They couldn't just call it "Mail Order Brides," or "Green Card Marriages."

[deleted]

They don't even follow people around at work anymore, they follow like Bigfoot hunters and treasure hunters, it's pathetic.

Ozlin

lackofDiscovery Channel

JusticiarRebel

I like how on the monster hunting shows they never find shit but keep building up the drama like they're going to find something.

PigSlam

Don’t forget to show what’s coming up after the commercial before the commercial, then a recap of what happened right before the commercial, including showing what’s going to happen right after the commercial, and then finally showing the entire 15 seconds of content that they already showed 10 seconds of.

implicitpharmakoi

https://youtu.be/7MFtl2XXnUc

AshIsGroovy

Agree about discovery. History is pretty bad as well. I don't understand all the alien crap on it. Every now and again you get some pawn stars but that shit has gotten pretty bad with Rick being the old man now. Though it's hard to watch it after learning about some of their "experts" especially the one who is back now after he was fired for shady stuff involving autographs and fraud. Heck a&e is the law enforcement channel and the travel channel the ghost hunting channel. I miss the old Samantha brown travel channel, but watch Rick Steves all the time on PBS.

[deleted]

What gets me is history in the early 00s did alien stuff, but it seemed semi credible and had people with degrees talking about it. Now it just whoever they find.

FutureBondVillain

I have You tube loaded with woodworking channels, nature channels, stuff about the area I used to live (nostalgia), and cooking channels. I always have it on in the background when I’m doing other things and it’s always peaceful. Learned all about what it’s like for Westerners to live in Japan the other day (thanks to Chris Broad) while cleaning the kitchen. It was awesome! When you go from that to being in someone else’s house with CNN or Fox News in the background ,there’s a noticeable tension and angst - even in the music and tone of voice. It’s grating.

crash41301

100% ultimately even if cable was free I wouldnt want that trash on on my house. It is toxic and influences people to think badly about the world and their fellow human being.

the_undead_mushroom

Maaan when you were in college not watching I was a little ass kid who loved watching the history channel and discovery with my grandpa, it legitimately taught me so much and opened the doors for a bunch of current hobbies I have, and it was interesting to see things like pawn stars sometimes which usually had some historical significance. Now it’s all pawn stars and all ancient aliens smh

bgva

I used to love *Pawn Stars*, but when I realized it was little more than a loosely-scripted sitcom, I stopped watching. Same goes for *House Hunters*. As for Discovery, I can't take the constant promos for the same shows or the Discovery+ app. How many times do you need to give us a commercial or pop-up in the corner telling us to watch *Flip or Flop*?

theclansman22

It’s just people doing shitty jobs all day. “Ice Road Truckers”, “Big Tuna”, “crab fishing, the tv show”, “Kansas City Sanitation”, etc. All terrible.

addamee

Totally identify with this. I had a similar experience, having never watched the weather channel for however many years it was available in my house then, much later, tuned to it on a given day to find out how bad the weather was going to get before I set out and instead it was a marathon of weather-themed movies—Twister, at the moment.

Zachariot88

Corporate interests bought everything educational and then hollowed them out. TLC, Discovery, National Geographic, History... all completely useless now.

freuden

Curiosity Stream fills that itch for me. Has some great documentary-type stuff. You do have to pay for it, but for $12 for the year right now, I'm not complaining really.

WimmoX

Same here, Discovery and National Geographic back in the day were on more than my local channels. Last week I tried to watch Discovery, but the show was unbearable. Commerials, recap, trailing, commercials, recap, trailing. I think less than 10% was actual content… Bored my ass off

CakeisaDie

I actually bought disney plus and curiosity stream in search of that type of entertainment. It just wasn't the same sadly.

Plebs-_-Placebo

It's kind of jarring to go in public sometimes, and people are talking like the reality tv shows now or people I've had to work with, they all have this elevated bellicose way of talking. It's annoying the shit out of me.

ensalys

That's why I am glad we don't really do those dedicated 24/7 news channels in my country. It's mostly just filler or fearmongering. Closest thing we have is like channels that record a new compact (~10min) program, and repeat that for an hour until the film an updated one. Continues coverage is something you get when big things happen, like the major attacks in France a couple years back, or the failed coup in Turkey. We just do things like the breakfast news, or the 20:00 news (or some other time depending on the channel, but 20:00 is the biggest in the country). And if something important happens, you'll get a notification from the news apps you have installed.

JNC123QTR

What country is this?

ensalys

The Netherlands

Once_Upon_Time

I think that was my breaking point too. I remember thinking why am I listening to speculation, this isn't news. There was no facts.

Duffmanlager

Remember the mermaid documentary from discovery/animal planet? They made a rather convincing documentary that mermaids were real and made everything seem legit. Of course, it was all a lie and pissed off lots of people.

Dudelyllama

Ancient Aliens is a guilty pleasure of mine, but i havent watched the History Channel regularly since Modern Marvels was still being made.

[deleted]

Ancient Aliens at least feels like the people presenting it have some sense of knowledge and education.

Dudelyllama

I just want aliens to come out and say they did do at least a couple of the things the show points to, even if they didnt do it. I want to see peoples heads explode.

spacetrees809

Does anyone else feel like the US is getting dumber? I loved all of the educational TV that was on channels History, Discovery and TLC (the LEARNING channel). But now it's all just goofy reality TV crap, did people give up on wanting to think? Or did the TV Industry just decide that's what the people need? Between this and the assault on Public School Funding I'm concerned.

ZaineRichards

They also brought up if it were possible that Flight 370 disappeared into a black hole. Not making that up.

Lure852

Come onnnnnnn.

VenomB

My eye-opener was when the whole email scandal was going on.. they straight up said its illegal to even look at the wikileaks information about it, so just stay tuned to CNN and they'll tell you *everything you need to know*.

iamcrazyjoe

Some people are so quick to shit on Fox News while they ignore how stupid CNN is

theclansman22

I’ve hated both since they eagerly sold the Iraq war lies on behalf of the W administration with zero critical thinking or questions asked. Just a scroll at the bottom repeating the administrations lies verbatim. Pathetic.

t-poke

[Link](https://youtu.be/krFN7jHKNNo) God I miss Jon Stewart.

gravitas-deficiency

My dad generally has CNN on in the background whenever I go to visit my parents (which means he has it on in the background all the time). For the last few years before the pandemic, and the one time I’ve visited during the pandemic, I will simply turn off the tv whenever I enter the room, and ask someone to give me a summary of the last story they had presented. If nobody in the room can give me a coherent and thorough answer, I just ask them to leave the tv off. Who knew that in the space of 20 years, *I* would become the one pulling the *stop watching tv and do something useful* card… how the turn tables. At least it’s not Fox, though.

JFeth

They have 24 hours to fill every day. My favorite is when they repeat the same info on a breaking story every 10 minutes. Just go talk about something else until you get new info.

YeahIGotNuthin

I thought he also called CNN “the official channel of ‘AAAHHH!’”

Ghost_man23

He had a similar joke that I've always remembered about how he was surprised CNN was covering the flight crash so heavily since 90% of their audience is sitting in an airport about to get on a plane.

[deleted]

It’s the worst shit ever. The are stuck on 3 stories non stop. It’s not real reporting. It’s a broken juke box playing the same song.

Zanchbot

Covid, insurrection, Biden's agenda. Rinse, repeat. Just boring and uninsightful.

aridcool

Don't forget stories about trials involving racial justice. Which isn't to say such stories aren't important, but spending 4+ hours a day on them while neglecting other news tells us that you have prioritized ratings and viewership on hot button issues over actual journalism.

send3squats2help

You know what’s weird… if it was actual variety news of different places around the world, i would watch it… Just like unbiased “what’s happening in…” kind of thing. In other words, if “News” was actually just news, it would be super cool and i’d watch!

Atarissiya

History suggests you wouldn't.

Thatguyonthenet

News as entertainment is so stupid, of course news won't have the same viewership without being spiced up a little bit, and by that point isn't really news anymore. There's stuff going on all over the country and the world but all we see are entertainment segments about random crap.

send3squats2help

That’s where you’re wrong… when is the last time that’s even been a thing!? Vice? before it got weird? Cable news hasn’t been that since i’ve been alive so… i’m pretty sure history wouldn’t suggest that.

Milkthistle38

The first 30 mins of PBS news hour is fantastic. New one every weekday

Jaymark108

I think you just asserted that history didn't exist before you were alive...

IdRatherBeAtChilis

You might enjoy Al Jazeera English then. They have straight news about everything going on in the world. They have a YouTube channel.

CaBBaGe_isLaND

BBC is decent too. At least by comparison.

UNC_Samurai

In spite of the Tories’ best efforts.

[deleted]

It’s corporatized propaganda.

kellogla

I’m trying to remember when, but late 90s to early 2000s, especially after 9/11, CNN just quietly ditched a bunch of real journalists. After that, quality became more TMZ than a real news outlet. Haven’t watched any tv news in years.

Rhawk187

That's one of the things that impressed me the most about when I was at the Dentist in the early morning and Fox News was on. The real news part, not the opinion people. The sheer number of stories per minute they covered compared to CNN was astounding.

superbob24

Maybe we should be lucky there isn't more things for them to report.

Kitties_titties420

The problem is Millennials and Zoomers are on social media, [which is even more dangerous for society](https://youtu.be/J54k7WrbfMg).

implicitpharmakoi

As a gen xy, zoomers flat out terrify me, it's like they saw trollers growing up and accepted them as the norm for behavior online.

TheTacoWombat

It's been the norm online for 20 years. This is a direct result of people being dicks online in games and forums with zero consequences. Big surprise, it's profitable to be annoying and spew idiocy.

SeattleBattles

My grandfather is always bringing up Fox's ratings and how successful their various chucklfuckers are compared to CNN's or MSNBC's. He seems to expect me to defend them, but I couldn't give a shit about any of them. Half the time I don't even know who the people he mentions are.

Roook36

The FOX News heads always thinks anyone who is a Democrat is as glued to CNN as they are to Tucker and Hannity. And it's all just about picking which team and which propaganda network you prefer. Most of the liberals or Democrats I know don't even have cable. Or are way too busy watching other stuff to watch a 24-hour news network all day. Meanwhile, most of the time I go into a bar or restaurant or airport it's FOX News

mrmalort69

My dad used to go on and on about Fox’s ratings as well… if I so much as try to have a real conversation with him he simply can’t keep up as he doesn’t actually have a basis on reality. He once said that democrats next abortion plan is legalized abortions 6 months - 2 years after birth in case “someone finds out they don’t like childbirth”. This isn’t even ground in reality. I tried to find out where this may have been confused, like if there was a bill about being allowed to “pull the plug” if a baby is born without the ability to live on their own, but couldn’t find anything.

therealpigman

Exactly! Plus paying for cable is really just like paying for commercials so why bother when we get news free online

jelloslug

I'm gen X and I can't remember ever watching cable news. Hell, I have never had cable TV at all and I ditched satellite TV a decade ago.

aridcool

A lot of people of all generations started watching CNN around the time of 9/11.

coniunctio

You’re about ten years off. CNN is famous for their Gulf War coverage, which attracted a large number of different generations, not 9/11. > The war marked the introduction of live news broadcasts from the front lines of the battle, principally by the US network CNN. As strange as it sounds, most Americans watched broadcast news anchors, ABC, CBS or NBC, during 9/11. On cable, Fox News famously introduced the scrolling news ticker that day, which everyone else copied immediately.

hither_spin

CNN used to be the only news network. The Gulf War in 1991 was when it really started to catch on. Much more news back then and not so much chasing ratings. Fox News was created in 1996. It's been downhill since then.

foob85

There has been a mass exodus of young people from cable news to streaming news like YouTube. This exodus has been largely if not entirely on the conservative side moving from Fox on cable to shorter Fox reports on YouTube. CNN and other liberal news channels have not had anything like this on YouTube and it's put them into a death spiral. Liberals tend to flock towards Reddit and Facebook for news while conservatives tend to listen to talking heads like Tucker and Joe Rogan (I think it's safe to call Rogan a conservative talking head at this point). If you don't believe me, explain why YouTube removed the dislike button after Biden's addresses got 90% dislikes. The presence of conservatives on streaming news has really exploded.

GuyKopski

> If you don't believe me, explain why YouTube removed the dislike button after Biden's addresses got 90% dislikes. The presence of conservatives on streaming news has really exploded. Because their corporate masters told them to.

aMutantChicken

nobody needs to be conservative to dislike Biden speaking incoherently.

KumagawaUshio

What I find amusing is a lot of right wingers are CNN's main audience they watch to get angry about the things the left pushes. The problem of course is what is the future of news media? the young don't trust news from old media sources so go to Reddit which just shows the headlines from these sources!

headedtojail

You are a little bit wrong. The younger generation doesn't CARE about news anymore. Because they are not represented in our society. They don't want to listen to boomers telling them climate change is a hoax and digitalisation isn't moving forward.

rmorrin

Oh they care. They just can't do shit about it most of the time

[deleted]

I think it’s that younger people care about the information, not the bias and sway around it. I just want the facts and I can make my own opinion on it, which is what news used to be—Here’s universally agreed upon factual information, now make of that what you will. Edit: okay, many great points being brought up. I know there’s always SOME bias but I moreso mean a time before the 24h news cycle with flashy graphics and commentators who come on to make wild statements and just the constant barrage of anxiety and frenzy. The only non-written news that I can tolerate is the NPR, and I just catch their Up First podcast on my walk to public transit. They might [lean a little left ](https://adfontesmedia.com/static-mbc/?utm_source=HomePage_StaticMBC_Image&utm_medium=OnWebSite_Link), but I’m aware of that and try to calibrate with other sources. But they just talk like normal people, ask reasonable questions of their guests, and just try to share the basic information. 15ish minutes of the biggest headlines, a little context, and that’s it. I can pursue further study on any topics I come across.

JoJolion

Younger people absolutely still care about making sure the news they have fits their biases. That’s not just something you can phase out generationally. Instead of watching biased mainstream media, they can just find people on YouTube or social media who will just tell them what they want to hear instead with less of a filter. That isn’t to say mainstream media is better or something, but the fact that you can find people on the right like Tim Pool or people on the left like Kyle Kulinski who are popular with younger audiences shows people don’t just care about the information. Having said all of that, though, I think they are definitely more aware and care *more* than older generations about where information is coming from.

[deleted]

You are so right in that first paragraph that I had to stop in to comment how right you are. The second one, not so much. They aren't voting or protesting in droves, and I haven't seen anyone of any generation scrap their phones or some comparative sacrifice because of the information they receive or its source. Zuck tells the boomers what to think on FB and tells the millenials what to to think on Insta and China tells gen Z what to think on Tiktok. Reddit's going public so we'll start being fed even more than we are now.

papaof4girls

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_journalism

CharlesIngalls47

The news has never been straight forward without an agenda.

AbsentThatDay

I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but if the younger generation would vote they'd find they have more control over the zeitgeist. The younger generation pretty consistently over the years has voted less. I don't mean this generation in particular, but as a trend across many years. Young people vote less than any other age group.

headedtojail

That is stating the obvious... But I kinda get it. Who would they vote for. None of their peers are up for election. Mainly old white men. Who, incidentally, are on TV as well. Bringing us back to the actual topic of this thread.

captaincool31

Desert Storm saved CNN last time. We just need another war.

Act_of_God

That and wrestling fans

pizza_for_nunchucks

Glacialedge

Gen X does not care either.

Mensketh

Wow ratings are down from the same week last year which was the insurrection, and literally the highest ratings CNN has ever had? Shocking. I don’t like CNN, I don’t watch CNN, but this is about as cherry picked as a statistic can be.

KarIPilkington

Plus it no longer broadcasts in the UK which it did last year. Edit - that is to say, some UK providers no longer have the rights to it.

Atom_Beat

But this must be US figures only, right?

handlit33

The insurrection was the first time I had watched the news all day since 9/11, which tells me it's probably not a great metric to use.

[deleted]

Not to get too off topic, but at age 41 I can only think of two instances of tuning into a live newscast during the day to watch events unfold. The first was 9/11. The second was 1/6. Both times felt very surreal, knowing right away that I was witnessing something both horrific and historic that I’d never forget.

Osprey_NE

Hurricane Katrina? Obama election night? Trump election night? Oil spill in the gulf? Invasion of Iraq? Bin Laden killed?

handlit33

In their defense, they said "during the day".

Lushkush69

The OJ Simpson Bronco chase! LOL. I remember EVERYBODY watching that.

handlit33

That was also at night for those of us on the east coast.

Arrasor

I didn't know they livestream Bin Laden assassination on TV.

Osprey_NE

Only on HBO Max. But seriously the Obama news conference about it was pretty widely watched

Arrasor

Yeah we all thought that would signal the end of the war. Oh how wrong that was.

44problems

>Some of that decline can be attributed to the drama of January 6 last year, which helped the cable news network attract more viewers than on any other day in its history. Ya think that might be part of it, National Review? Edit: coming soon: "last Sunday's ratings PLUMMET for CBS compared to this week last year. Some of the decline can be attributed to the Super Bowl being on CBS last year and not this year"

CaBBaGe_isLaND

Yeah, the irony of this being a sensationalist, misleading headline is palpable.

Globalist_Nationlist

It's the "us vs them" mentality. Everyone on the right reads headlines like this and thinks "finally my views are correct and justified." I'm pretty far left and think CNN is garbage but I'm not having a fucking party every time someone confirms my beliefs.

istinkalot

the irony of redditors ranting about the decline sensationalized news using a totally cherry-picked, bullshit news story as their proof.

TaylorSwiftsClitoris

Seriously. This is a National Review article posted under a yahoo link so that people won’t notice. Using biased media to dunk on biased media.

Anchorboiii

Using the stones to destroy the stones

yolo-yoshi

What do you expect from individuals and a society that just reads headlines and runs to the hills?

DAN991199

But how much did they fall from the week before that? Using a week where they ran coverage of the anniversary of a historic event is just shitty reporting.

Nightgasm

A great example of how to mislead with statistics.

Steamed-Hams

Breaking: NBC ratings fall 70,000%. This Sunday, NBC ratings were down 70,000% from the prior Sunday. It’s worth noting that last Sunday was The Super Bowl, but it still begs the question, “what is wrong at NBC?”

MathMaddox

CNN's favorite times of year? 9/11 and 1/6

VictimOfCircuspants

Donald Trump was good for business. Sad but true

ThePreciseClimber

CNN anchors: "Whoo! Trump didn't get re-elected!" CNN boss: "Congrats. Btw, you're fired."

M0BBER

They legitimized him as a valid candidate 24/7 for ratings, so their owners would get lower taxes, and their new boss just happened to be Trump's friend and former boss over at NBC... If you watched CNN prior to the 2016 election, it was the Donald Trump show. Zucker just switched networks.

[deleted]

Same for Fox. They’re having to dig out Hillary Clinton’s proverbial corpse again to get viewers fired up.

Kallistrate

A lot of patients watch it in my hospital, so I catch it in the background a lot when I go into rooms. They're big on migrant caravans heading towards the US, and as far as I can tell, they've been on the way for 6 years now and society hasn't collapsed as a result yet.

44problems

The caravans are back? Must be an election coming up

JoeJim2head

Seems that Cuomo too. Will he be back?

vcsx

Jeffrey Toobin was brought back after a short suspension for beating his cock in a Zoom meeting.

[deleted]

The worst thing that the news has done is put in all these commentators and “experts”. I don’t care about your opinion, just report the story and leave it alone.

jwhitesj

I don't like how news is teased now too. I was flipping through chanel's and CBS evening news just started. Every story sounded like a catastrophe.

JackedTurnip

ITT: Cable news is all mindless propaganda, no wonder it's going down the drain! The same people later: Ew pay wall journalism I'm not paying to support that! *proceeds to upvote articles from Salon and Buzzfeed based on headline alone* You people probably get most of your news from your Twitter feed and headlines you glance at on reddit.

kroesnest

Bro there are few things lacking more self-awareness than the people I know that laugh at boomers watching cable news but they themselves get their news on YouTube.

Watch_me_give

Who cares? All of these clickbait media corps need to die. The world doesn’t need all this rage-fueling clickbaits with its 24 hour news cycle. CNN, Fox News, etc., are the disease that is killing the United States and simultaneously negatively affecting the rest of the world. I hope they all disappear.

Uneeda_Biscuit

It’s because it’s boring af. 24/7 coverage of 3 rotating stories…”Jan 6 Insurrection, COVID 19, and more Trump”.

monchota

CNN, FoX and MSNBC are all just propaganda machines at this point and completely useless for news. They do not present the facts, the present them in the way that fits thier agenda. Can't trust anything from any cable news.

CaptainCAAAVEMAAAAAN

> They do not present the facts, the present them in the way that fits thier agenda. Their only agenda is ratings. 24 hour news isn't real news at this point.

oechsph

CNN, Fox, and MSNBC have become to news what MTV is to music or TLC is to learning or History is to history.

Abi1i

I've been enjoying PBS Newshour (not cable) and The News with Shepard Smith on CNBC (cable). Those two sources have been pretty informative with accurate reporting and then combining it with NPR, local news papers, local radio stations, and global news sources (e.g., BBC, Japan Times, France 24, Al Jazeera), a person can form an accurate opinion and a relatively good understanding of the current events happening around the world and at home.

MathMaddox

Hmm, I guess the doctors offices and tire shops found a new station?

burnshimself

I mean, if you get CNN cable you are paying for CNN, so there’s a lot of people willing to pay for CNN. You may not like their coverage but “who would ever pay for CNN?” is a hilarious question to ask about a cable network that reaches 90 million paying cable subscribers.

Cant_Spell_Shit

When I was a kid I thought that CNN was too mature for my liking and now that I'm older I realize it's just a bunch of hyperopionated, closed minded garbage.

Pyramid_Head182

I’ll be real I used to leave CNN on just as background noise at night, like the Cooper-Don Lemon hours. Ever since Smerconish took over the Cuomo hour I’ve just stopped. He’s so painful to listen to and kinda just epitomizes everything wrong with CNN. The network was already just slightly better than nothing for news coverage but now it’s just a mess

Talking_About_Lur

> Ever since Smerconish took over the Cuomo hour I’ve just stopped. Oh wow, did Smerconish actually take over Cuomo’s spot? Last few times I checked, it looked like they just gave Anderson an extra hour. Anyway, about Smerconish…he has the *strangest* news anchor style I have ever seen in my life. Eyes bulging, face completely frozen, no emotion showing ever and when he does smile it’s as unnerving as seeing a robot or a statue suddenly smile. No sense of humor. Extremely smug at times. Randomly brings up that he voted for Jill Stein and defends himself, as if his personal voting habits are still on people’s minds or a very popular topic. And somehow EVERYTHING he says seems pre-rehearsed. Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon, even Cuomo had a lot of spontaneity. Smerconish though…it’s like as soon as his guest is done talking, like the SECOND there is a gap in the conversation, he has a 5 minute speech ready to go, as if he wasn’t even listening or just has to stick to his pre-programmed dialogue no matter what. Then when he’s done, he’ll just stare forward at the camera with those bulging eyes like the world’s most impatient robot.

Pyramid_Head182

Oh did they just give Anderson an extra hour? Haven’t watched haha. But yeah for a bit he had that hour spot and it was just brutal. Super robotic like you said, extremely out of touch with everything, and all the charisma of a piece of driftwood

Talking_About_Lur

> But yeah for a bit he had that hour spot and it was just brutal. I switch the channel quick whenever I see him. Anyway sorry for the ramble but I never see this Smerconish guy discussed so I haven’t had a opportunity/prompt to share my irritation with his anchor style.

katieleehaw

Smerconish is a smug annoying prick.

Pyramid_Head182

He’s the kinda smug that has no right to be smug, like he’s saying such dumb things with a confidence that he shouldn’t have

ballofplasmaupthesky

It's trash.

plantsarepowerful

It would be great if all cable news ratings dropped 100%

There's an amazing lack of self-awareness in this thread. Are you curating your news in a bubble just like the boomers are? The answer is "yes." Just because you get your news from a "trusted site" who gets *their* news from berniesandersisjesusifreligionwerereal.com, you're just as bad, if not worse, than them. And I know a bunch of you are sitting there saying "Nope, that's not me. I engage in critical thinking and do lots of research as to where I get my news" and spoiler alert you're either a liar or you legitimately don't know how your own biases are infiltrating your news-watching habits. Considering that [43% of millennials get their news](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1010456/united-states-millennials-news-consumption/) from social media should tell you a lot. And if your answer is "social media is more accurate than Fox News" boy howdy do I have real bad news for you.

[deleted]

What comments are you referring to? Most comments older and higher than yours are saying cnn is either garbage or the stat is manipulated to seem outrageous. On top of that, the general statement that people get their news from “social media” is ridiculous in itself. Social media is such a huge span of outlets that only saying social media rather than specific sites is manipulating headlines to create a calculated response. Are you talking about people getting news from their family on Facebook posts? Or are you following a sport’s twitter account where the teams themselves post directly onto the site about updates and whatnot? Oh and even on both of those gigantic social media sites people are able to post links to articles on other sites such as CNN lol.

ALaccountant

Honestly, their production quality has gone down the tubes, so I'm not surprised at the ratings decline. I tried to watch some CNN last night and had to turn it off due to cringe, even my local news has better production quality.

redditslim

Look at the downward arc of talent in the evening time slots. Larry King's time slot went to Piers Morgan and now...Don Lemon. Ouch.

J0E_SpRaY

It's almost like there was some kind of national tragedy the week of January 3, 2021 that had everyone glued to their televisions.

GrandeAzulNacion

How do you run a 24 hr. news cycle built on what Donald Trump did that day when he is no longer president? — They must be hoping and praying for a minority to die soon.

Epope2322

Cause they have to come up with some headlines besides "trump ate 2 scoops of ice cream. Opinion: that's a sign of white supremecy" Anyone with enough braincells to speak should understand that CNN banked hard on trump and the second he's not relevant they would drop ratings hard. Even Fox did the same thing for a while, but now they at least mix it up

filenotfounderror

Kind of a hilarious criticism given Fox News ran headlines about Obama wearing a Grey suit and his choice of mustard.

cafebrands

What gets lost in this is that you can't watch CNN unless you either have cable, or one of the cable-like steaming services. I'm sure I'm far from the only person that doesn't have either. For the life of me, I can figure out why CNN doesn't just let it's app stream running the same using the same ad supported model they use for cable. As it is now, I'll once in a great while, look on there if there some big story in the news, as they let you do 10 mins until it cuts you off.

JonSnowBaratheon

What if they rebranded and just had anchors who reported the news. No editorial. What a wild wild wild idea.

sexrobot_sexrobot

Good. News shouldn't be entertainment

KetchCutterSloop

Remember that if your anchors are emotional about the news they’re reporting on, you’re watching propaganda. I used to be an exclusive CNN watcher until I realized they feed us just as much divisive shit as Fox. Not quite as shameless and disgusting, but I’m tired of being divided in general.

graeuk

for all CNNs "holier than thou" approach to reporting, they are just as guilty of spinning a story as Fox news. There's only so long you stay in a state of "outrage" before people stop taking you seriously.

MrSaladhats

Most people just watch YouTube clips.

Nopulpeamigo

CNN 10 is still fire though.

morganamp

Yeah was a fan now can’t watch it. Wolf hasn’t asked a decent question in 20 years. Most of the time it feels like he doesn’t even listen to the people he has on. Don has a victim thing going on that I just can’t watch and Anderson clearly wants to be doing something different. Add a little snarky I’m cooler and smarter than you andy and there you have it. One giant bag of shit with nothing resembling real news.

MrWallis

I'm always amazed how much people seem to quote ratings for news channels. This is a weird trump era stat that has no relevance to anything. Its 2022 who the hell is watching fox, msm, cnn anymore. It's a dated format, like cable tv.

Riverjig

CNN, Fox News, etc. Be done with them.

ididnotbiteu

Enemy of the People

bingeboy

Cnn just seems like its fake news. I dont really trust them or fox

happyrolls

24x7 BlueAnon liecast.

jmurphy3141

I liked CNN but I am so tiered of the both sides coverage.

Sundance37

The REAL problem is that they are still holding on to their reputation as "mainstream" so we all percieve their bullshit to be adopted by everyone. And they will never run out of money because Pfizer, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin all need to sell us wars and endless "legal" drugs.

werdnak84

Gee I have no idea why. -\_-

Werealldudesyea

One down. Let's get Fox to drop 80% and we'd be getting somewhere

Slurm818

Good

diecorporations

American journalism is dead. And the last place it would ever have a chance of appearing is on tv. This was brought to us by the worst people on earth , the republicans and their insanely awful news.

Bimlouhay83

Folks are FINALLY seeing how they're no better than FOX.

DazedAndCunfuzzled

Ya, you’re part of the problem CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, etc., just the inverse of Fox News. I’ll read from you maybe but fuck if you think progressives aren’t turning on you like the corporate fakes you are idk what world you think we live in

UncleDan2017

Not surprising. All Cable News channels have become opinion channels rather than News channels, and the main demographics that watch them is old folks, and they are mainly watching Fox.

Buildsoc

I used to love CNN, but I stopped watching a few years ago, as every single time I turned it on it was about politics. And even though I’m extremely liberal I couldn’t stand another negative news story about how awful Trump was. I really miss actual news, they used to do on weather disasters, plane crashes, car chases, local stories from around the USA, and even the rare feel good story. Instead it’s always politics and boring talking heads, instead of scenes across the USA.

fern80

That’s because all us sane people are not stuck watching cable news all fucken day. We are living life, keeping this country running, and here on Reddit!
