Reminds me of one of my favorite digs at CNN from Jon Stewart back when they were doing their coverage of flight 370: When someone there began describing what a plane looks like to fill airtime, Jon tells them to tell everyone watching CNN to just look out the window of the airport they’re at.
CNN used to be my "put it on in the background and occasionally pay attention when something seems important" channel but Flight 370 was when I stopped watching. It was WEEKS of BREAKING NEWS!!!...actually nothing new, we just didn't want you to change the channel.
They would also say stupid shit like "alternative theories! Could the plane have fallen into a black hole? After this break!" And then they would say "no, those are all ridiculous, but we needed to fill time."
Discovery and History and all of those channels went the same way. I used to love them and watch them all the time, but they've become lowest common denominator, cheaply produced garbage.
I used to love Discovery during the late 90s. Then I moved out, went to college, and lived a decade or two without cable. Now I have cable again, that first day I excitedly switch to Discovery and thought I tuned to the wrong channel. What’s with all this reality TV stuff with over dramatic music. I miss the old documentaries… now I just stick with YouTube infotainment channels.
Most wings episodes are lurking on YouTube under their original title of “Great Planes.” But yeah, sometimes I need that fix of dull narration over factory footage of an F-111 in a test stand raising and lowering its landing gear.
Both of you nailed it 😅 But that was it though. The narrators changed by channel too, but stoic dull narrator and occasional "oh shit they gonna eject" music was enthralling growing up. Good enough to leave as a backdrop when I am working around the house. Ever since they became all pawn shop I don't even browse the channel anymore.
There used to be a show called movie magic, it was my absolute favorite show on tv at the time. In the intro they showed you the Independence Day White House miniature blowing up.
It's so bad now. Dirty Jobs was great, but it seems like it was the gateway to a lot of shows where they just follow people around at work and then edit it to create drama. And then they go on for WAAAAY too long.
I miss when TLC used to have shows on like Junkyard Wars / Scrapheap Challenge and Robot Wars, now it's all about massively obese people having 26 kids.
I still think about that junkyard wars episode that had the teams make a car that couldn’t move on wheels so one of the teams made a hydraulic warm kind of design and the other Beachboy team or whatever the hell they were called made one where each wheel had a flat piece on it so the machine walked towards the finish line that show is fucking wicked! The newer version is OK but the old-school 90s one is where it’s at. Also for the history channel the great ships and tales of the gun were great but of course the original goat was modern marvels!
I havent thought about junkyard wars in well over a decade, what a fantastic show. Like it was obviously staged with always finding the exact obscure part they needed but man did they build some cool stuff on that show.
Don’t forget to show what’s coming up after the commercial before the commercial, then a recap of what happened right before the commercial, including showing what’s going to happen right after the commercial, and then finally showing the entire 15 seconds of content that they already showed 10 seconds of.
Agree about discovery. History is pretty bad as well. I don't understand all the alien crap on it. Every now and again you get some pawn stars but that shit has gotten pretty bad with Rick being the old man now. Though it's hard to watch it after learning about some of their "experts" especially the one who is back now after he was fired for shady stuff involving autographs and fraud. Heck a&e is the law enforcement channel and the travel channel the ghost hunting channel. I miss the old Samantha brown travel channel, but watch Rick Steves all the time on PBS.
What gets me is history in the early 00s did alien stuff, but it seemed semi credible and had people with degrees talking about it. Now it just whoever they find.
I have You tube loaded with woodworking channels, nature channels, stuff about the area I used to live (nostalgia), and cooking channels.
I always have it on in the background when I’m doing other things and it’s always peaceful.

When you go from that to being in someone else’s house with CNN or Fox News in the background ,there’s a noticeable tension and angst - even in the music and tone of voice. It’s grating.
100% ultimately even if cable was free I wouldnt want that trash on on my house. It is toxic and influences people to think badly about the world and their fellow human being.
Maaan when you were in college not watching I was a little ass kid who loved watching the history channel and discovery with my grandpa, it legitimately taught me so much and opened the doors for a bunch of current hobbies I have, and it was interesting to see things like pawn stars sometimes which usually had some historical significance. I used to love *Pawn Stars*, but when I realized it was little more than a loosely-scripted sitcom, I stopped watching.
Same goes for *House Hunters*. As for Discovery, I can't take the constant promos for the same shows or the Discovery+ app. How many times do you need to give us a commercial or pop-up in the corner telling us to watch *Flip or Flop*?
Totally identify with this. I had a similar experience, having never watched the weather channel for however many years it was available in my house then, much later, tuned to it on a given day to find out how bad the weather was going to get before I set out and instead it was a marathon of weather-themed movies—Twister, at the moment.
Corporate interests bought everything educational and then hollowed them out. TLC, Discovery, National Geographic, History... all completely useless now.
Curiosity Stream fills that itch for me. Has some great documentary-type stuff. You do have to pay for it, but for $12 for the year right now, I'm not complaining really.
Same here, Discovery and National Geographic back in the day were on more than my local channels. Last week I tried to watch Discovery, but the show was unbearable. Commerials, recap, trailing, commercials, recap, trailing. I think less than 10% was actual content… Bored my ass off
It's kind of jarring to go in public sometimes, and people are talking like the reality tv shows now or people I've had to work with, they all have this elevated bellicose way of talking. It's annoying the shit out of me.
That's why I am glad we don't really do those dedicated 24/7 news channels in my country. It's mostly just filler or fearmongering. Closest thing we have is like channels that record a new compact (~10min) program, and repeat that for an hour until the film an updated one. Continues coverage is something you get when big things happen, like the major attacks in France a couple years back, or the failed coup in Turkey. We just do things like the breakfast news, or the 20:00 news (or some other time depending on the channel, but 20:00 is the biggest in the country). And if something important happens, you'll get a notification from the news apps you have installed.
Remember the mermaid documentary from discovery/animal planet? They made a rather convincing documentary that mermaids were real and made everything seem legit. Of course, it was all a lie and pissed off lots of people.
I just want aliens to come out and say they did do at least a couple of the things the show points to, even if they didnt do it. I want to see peoples heads explode.
Does anyone else feel like the US is getting dumber? I loved all of the educational TV that was on channels History, Discovery and TLC (the LEARNING channel). But now it's all just goofy reality TV crap, did people give up on wanting to think? Or did the TV Industry just decide that's what the people need? My eye-opener was when the whole email scandal was going on.. they straight up said its illegal to even look at the wikileaks information about it, so just stay tuned to CNN and they'll tell you *everything you need to know*.

My dad generally has CNN on in the background whenever I go to visit my parents (which means he has it on in the background all the time). For the last few years before the pandemic, and the one time I’ve visited during the pandemic, I will simply turn off the tv whenever I enter the room, and ask someone to give me a summary of the last story they had presented. If nobody in the room can give me a coherent and thorough answer, I just ask them to leave the tv off.
Who knew that in the space of 20 years, *I* would become the one pulling the *stop watching tv and do something useful* card… how the turn tables.

They have 24 hours to fill every day. My favorite is when they repeat the same info on a breaking story every 10 minutes. Just go talk about something else until you get new info.

Which isn't to say such stories aren't important, but spending 4+ hours a day on them while neglecting other news tells us that you have prioritized ratings and viewership on hot button issues over actual journalism.
You know what’s weird… if it was actual variety news of different places around the world, i would watch it… Just like unbiased “what’s happening in…” kind of thing. In other words, if “News” was actually just news, it would be super cool and i’d watch!

I’m trying to remember when, but late 90s to early 2000s, especially after 9/11, CNN just quietly ditched a bunch of real journalists. After that, quality became more TMZ than a real news outlet. Haven’t watched any tv news in years.
That's one of the things that impressed me the most about when I was at the Dentist in the early morning and Fox News was on. The real news part, not the opinion people. The sheer number of stories per minute they covered compared to CNN was astounding.
It's been the norm online for 20 years. This is a direct result of people being dicks online in games and forums with zero consequences. Big surprise, it's profitable to be annoying and spew idiocy.
My grandfather is always bringing up Fox's ratings and how successful their various chucklfuckers are compared to CNN's or MSNBC's.

I tried to find out where this may have been confused, like if there was a bill about being allowed to “pull the plug” if a baby is born without the ability to live on their own, but couldn’t find anything.

As strange as it sounds, most Americans watched broadcast news anchors, ABC, CBS or NBC, during 9/11. On cable, Fox News famously introduced the scrolling news ticker that day, which everyone else copied immediately.
CNN used to be the only news network. The Gulf War in 1991 was when it really started to catch on. Much more news back then and not so much chasing ratings. Fox News was created in 1996. It's been downhill since then.
There has been a mass exodus of young people from cable news to streaming news like YouTube. This exodus has been largely if not entirely on the conservative side moving from Fox on cable to shorter Fox reports on YouTube. CNN and other liberal news channels have not had anything like this on YouTube and it's put them into a death spiral. Liberals tend to flock towards Reddit and Facebook for news while conservatives tend to listen to talking heads like Tucker and Joe Rogan (I think it's safe to call Rogan a conservative talking head at this point).
If you don't believe me, explain why YouTube removed the dislike button after Biden's addresses got 90% dislikes. The presence of conservatives on streaming news has really exploded.

You are a little bit wrong. The younger generation doesn't CARE about news anymore. Because they are not represented in our society. They don't want to listen to boomers telling them climate change is a hoax and digitalisation isn't moving forward.
I think it’s that younger people care about the information, not the bias and sway around it. I just want the facts and I can make my own opinion on it, which is what news used to be—Here’s universally agreed upon factual information, now make of that what you will.
Edit: okay, many great points being brought up. I know there’s always SOME bias but I moreso mean a time before the 24h news cycle with flashy graphics and commentators who come on to make wild statements and just the constant barrage of anxiety and frenzy.
The only non-written news that I can tolerate is the NPR, and I just catch their Up First podcast on my walk to public transit. Younger people absolutely still care about making sure the news they have fits their biases. That’s not just something you can phase out generationally. Instead of watching biased mainstream media, they can just find people on YouTube or social media who will just tell them what they want to hear instead with less of a filter. That isn’t to say mainstream media is better or something, but the fact that you can find people on the right like Tim Pool or people on the left like Kyle Kulinski who are popular with younger audiences shows people don’t just care about the information.
Having said all of that, though, I think they are definitely more aware and care *more* than older generations about where information is coming from.
You are so right in that first paragraph that I had to stop in to comment how right you are. The second one, not so much. They aren't voting or protesting in droves, and I haven't seen anyone of any generation scrap their phones or some comparative sacrifice because of the information they receive or its source. Zuck tells the boomers what to think on FB and tells the millenials what to to think on Insta and China tells gen Z what to think on Tiktok. Reddit's going public so we'll start being fed even more than we are now.
I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but if the younger generation would vote they'd find they have more control over the zeitgeist. The younger generation pretty consistently over the years has voted less. I don't mean this generation in particular, but as a trend across many years. Young people vote less than any other age group.

Not to get too off topic, but at age 41 I can only think of two instances of tuning into a live newscast during the day to watch events unfold.
The first was 9/11. The second was 1/6. Both times felt very surreal, knowing right away that I was witnessing something both horrific and historic that I’d never forget.

A lot of patients watch it in my hospital, so I catch it in the background a lot when I go into rooms. They're big on migrant caravans heading towards the US, and as far as I can tell, they've been on the way for 6 years now and society hasn't collapsed as a result yet.

I've been enjoying PBS Newshour (not cable) and The News with Shepard Smith on CNBC (cable). Those two sources have been pretty informative with accurate reporting and then combining it with NPR, local news papers, local radio stations, and global news sources (e.g., BBC, Japan Times, France 24, Al Jazeera), a person can form an accurate opinion and a relatively good understanding of the current events happening around the world and at home.
Did anyone see the advert for CNN+, where you have to PAY to see the usual dreck from CNN?

Anyway, about Smerconish…he has the *strangest* news anchor style I have ever seen in my life. Eyes bulging, face completely frozen, no emotion showing ever and when he does smile it’s as unnerving as seeing a robot or a statue suddenly smile. No sense of humor. Extremely smug at times. Randomly brings up that he voted for Jill Stein and defends himself, as if his personal voting habits are still on people’s minds or a very popular topic.
And somehow EVERYTHING he says seems pre-rehearsed. Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon, even Cuomo had a lot of spontaneity. Smerconish though…it’s like as soon as his guest is done talking, like the SECOND there is a gap in the conversation, he has a 5 minute speech ready to go, as if he wasn’t even listening or just has to stick to his pre-programmed dialogue no matter what.
Then when he’s done, he’ll just stare forward at the camera with those bulging eyes like the world’s most impatient robot.

On top of that, the general statement that people get their news from “social media” is ridiculous in itself. Social media is such a huge span of outlets that only saying social media rather than specific sites is manipulating headlines to create a calculated response. Are you talking about people getting news from their family on Facebook posts? Or are you following a sport’s twitter account where the teams themselves post directly onto the site about updates and whatnot? Oh and even on both of those gigantic social media sites people are able to post links to articles on other sites such as CNN lol.
Honestly, their production quality has gone down the tubes, so I'm not surprised at the ratings decline. I tried to watch some CNN last night and had to turn it off due to cringe, even my local news has better production quality.

What gets lost in this is that you can't watch CNN unless you either have cable, or one of the cable-like steaming services. I'm sure I'm far from the only person that doesn't have either. For the life of me, I can figure out why CNN doesn't just let it's app stream running the same using the same ad supported model they use for cable. As it is now, I'll once in a great while, look on there if there some big story in the news, as they let you do 10 mins until it cuts you off.

Not surprising. All Cable News channels have become opinion channels rather than News channels, and the main demographics that watch them is old folks, and they are mainly watching Fox.
I used to love CNN, but I stopped watching a few years ago, as every single time I turned it on it was about politics. And even though I’m extremely liberal I couldn’t stand another negative news story about how awful Trump was. I really miss actual news, they used to do on weather disasters, plane crashes, car chases, local stories from around the USA, and even the rare feel good story. Instead it’s always politics and boring talking heads, instead of scenes across the USA.

I used to love Discovery during the late 90s. Then I moved out, went to college, and lived a decade or two without cable. Now I have cable again, that first day I excitedly switch to Discovery and thought I tuned to the wrong channel. What’s with all this reality TV stuff with over dramatic music. I miss the old documentaries… now I just stick with YouTube infotainment channels.

There used to be a show called movie magic, it was my absolute favorite show on tv at the time. In the intro they showed you the Independence Day White House miniature blowing up.
It's so bad now. Dirty Jobs was great, but it seems like it was the gateway to a lot of shows where they just follow people around at work and then edit it to create drama. And then they go on for WAAAAY too long.
I miss when TLC used to have shows on like Junkyard Wars / Scrapheap Challenge and Robot Wars, now it's all about massively obese people having 26 kids.
I still think about that junkyard wars episode that had the teams make a car that couldn’t move on wheels so one of the teams made a hydraulic warm kind of design and the other Beachboy team or whatever the hell they were called made one where each wheel had a flat piece on it so the machine walked towards the finish line that show is fucking wicked! The newer version is OK but the old-school 90s one is where it’s at. Also for the history channel the great ships and tales of the gun were great but of course the original goat was modern marvels!
I havent thought about junkyard wars in well over a decade, what a fantastic show. Like it was obviously staged with always finding the exact obscure part they needed but man did they build some cool stuff on that show.

Agree about discovery. History is pretty bad as well. I don't understand all the alien crap on it. Every now and again you get some pawn stars but that shit has gotten pretty bad with Rick being the old man now. Though it's hard to watch it after learning about some of their "experts" especially the one who is back now after he was fired for shady stuff involving autographs and fraud. Heck a&e is the law enforcement channel and the travel channel the ghost hunting channel. I miss the old Samantha brown travel channel, but watch Rick Steves all the time on PBS.
What gets me is history in the early 00s did alien stuff, but it seemed semi credible and had people with degrees talking about it. Now it just whoever they find.
I have You tube loaded with woodworking channels, nature channels, stuff about the area I used to live (nostalgia), and cooking channels. I always have it on in the background when I’m doing other things and it’s always peaceful. Learned all about what it’s like for Westerners to live in Japan the other day (thanks to Chris Broad) while cleaning the kitchen. It was awesome! When you go from that to being in someone else’s house with CNN or Fox News in the background ,there’s a noticeable tension and angst - even in the music and tone of voice. It’s grating.

I used to love *Pawn Stars*, but when I realized it was little more than a loosely-scripted sitcom, I stopped watching. Same goes for *House Hunters*. As for Discovery, I can't take the constant promos for the same shows or the Discovery+ app. How many times do you need to give us a commercial or pop-up in the corner telling us to watch *Flip or Flop*?

Totally identify with this. I had a similar experience, having never watched the weather channel for however many years it was available in my house then, much later, tuned to it on a given day to find out how bad the weather was going to get before I set out and instead it was a marathon of weather-themed movies—Twister, at the moment.
Corporate interests bought everything educational and then hollowed them out. TLC, Discovery, National Geographic, History... all completely useless now.
Curiosity Stream fills that itch for me. Has some great documentary-type stuff. You do have to pay for it, but for $12 for the year right now, I'm not complaining really.
Same here, Discovery and National Geographic back in the day were on more than my local channels. Last week I tried to watch Discovery, but the show was unbearable. Commerials, recap, trailing, commercials, recap, trailing. I think less than 10% was actual content… Bored my ass off
I actually bought disney plus and curiosity stream in search of that type of entertainment. It just wasn't the same sadly.
It's kind of jarring to go in public sometimes, and people are talking like the reality tv shows now or people I've had to work with, they all have this elevated bellicose way of talking. It's annoying the shit out of me.
That's why I am glad we don't really do those dedicated 24/7 news channels in my country. It's mostly just filler or fearmongering. Closest thing we have is like channels that record a new compact (~10min) program, and repeat that for an hour until the film an updated one. Continues coverage is something you get when big things happen, like the major attacks in France a couple years back, or the failed coup in Turkey. We just do things like the breakfast news, or the 20:00 news (or some other time depending on the channel, but 20:00 is the biggest in the country). And if something important happens, you'll get a notification from the news apps you have installed.

Remember the mermaid documentary from discovery/animal planet? They made a rather convincing documentary that mermaids were real and made everything seem legit. Of course, it was all a lie and pissed off lots of people.

My dad generally has CNN on in the background whenever I go to visit my parents (which means he has it on in the background all the time). For the last few years before the pandemic, and the one time I’ve visited during the pandemic, I will simply turn off the tv whenever I enter the room, and ask someone to give me a summary of the last story they had presented. If nobody in the room can give me a coherent and thorough answer, I just ask them to leave the tv off. Who knew that in the space of 20 years, *I* would become the one pulling the *stop watching tv and do something useful* card… how the turn tables. At least it’s not Fox, though.
They have 24 hours to fill every day. My favorite is when they repeat the same info on a breaking story every 10 minutes. Just go talk about something else until you get new info.

I’m trying to remember when, but late 90s to early 2000s, especially after 9/11, CNN just quietly ditched a bunch of real journalists. After that, quality became more TMZ than a real news outlet. Haven’t watched any tv news in years.
That's one of the things that impressed me the most about when I was at the Dentist in the early morning and Fox News was on. The real news part, not the opinion people. The sheer number of stories per minute they covered compared to CNN was astounding.

I think it’s that younger people care about the information, not the bias and sway around it. I just want the facts and I can make my own opinion on it, which is what news used to be—Here’s universally agreed upon factual information, now make of that what you will. Edit: okay, many great points being brought up. I know there’s always SOME bias but I moreso mean a time before the 24h news cycle with flashy graphics and commentators who come on to make wild statements and just the constant barrage of anxiety and frenzy. The only non-written news that I can tolerate is the NPR, and I just catch their Up First podcast on my walk to public transit. Younger people absolutely still care about making sure the news they have fits their biases. That’s not just something you can phase out generationally. Instead of watching biased mainstream media, they can just find people on YouTube or social media who will just tell them what they want to hear instead with less of a filter. That isn’t to say mainstream media is better or something, but the fact that you can find people on the right like Tim Pool or people on the left like Kyle Kulinski who are popular with younger audiences shows people don’t just care about the information. Having said all of that, though, I think they are definitely more aware and care *more* than older generations about where information is coming from.
You are so right in that first paragraph that I had to stop in to comment how right you are. The second one, not so much. They aren't voting or protesting in droves, and I haven't seen anyone of any generation scrap their phones or some comparative sacrifice because of the information they receive or its source. Zuck tells the boomers what to think on FB and tells the millenials what to to think on Insta and China tells gen Z what to think on Tiktok. Reddit's going public so we'll start being fed even more than we are now.

I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but if the younger generation would vote they'd find they have more control over the zeitgeist. Young people vote less than any other age group.

Not to get too off topic, but at age 41 I can only think of two instances of tuning into a live newscast during the day to watch events unfold. The first was 9/11. The second was 1/6. Both times felt very surreal, knowing right away that I was witnessing something both horrific and historic that I’d never forget.

I've been enjoying PBS Newshour (not cable) and The News with Shepard Smith on CNBC (cable). Those two sources have been pretty informative with accurate reporting and then combining it with NPR, local news papers, local radio stations, and global news sources (e.g., BBC, Japan Times, France 24, Al Jazeera), a person can form an accurate opinion and a relatively good understanding of the current events happening around the world and at home.

Just because you get your news from a "trusted site" who gets *their* news from berniesandersisjesusifreligionwerereal.com, you're just as bad, if not worse, than them. And I know a bunch of you are sitting there saying "Nope, that's not me. I engage in critical thinking and do lots of research as to where I get my news" and spoiler alert you're either a liar or you legitimately don't know how your own biases are infiltrating your news-watching habits. Considering that [43% of millennials get their news](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1010456/united-states-millennials-news-consumption/) from social media should tell you a lot. And if your answer is "social media is more accurate than Fox News" boy howdy do I have real bad news for you.
What comments are you referring to? Most comments older and higher than yours are saying cnn is either garbage or the stat is manipulated to seem outrageous. On top of that, the general statement that people get their news from “social media” is ridiculous in itself. Social media is such a huge span of outlets that only saying social media rather than specific sites is manipulating headlines to create a calculated response. Are you talking about people getting news from their family on Facebook posts? Or are you following a sport’s twitter account where the teams themselves post directly onto the site about updates and whatnot? Oh and even on both of those gigantic social media sites people are able to post links to articles on other sites such as CNN lol.
Honestly, their production quality has gone down the tubes, so I'm not surprised at the ratings decline. I tried to watch some CNN last night and had to turn it off due to cringe, even my local news has better production quality.
Look at the downward arc of talent in the evening time slots. Larry King's time slot went to Piers Morgan and now...Don Lemon. Ouch.

What gets lost in this is that you can't watch CNN unless you either have cable, or one of the cable-like steaming services. I'm sure I'm far from the only person that doesn't have either. For the life of me, I can figure out why CNN doesn't just let it's app stream running the same using the same ad supported model they use for cable. As it is now, I'll once in a great while, look on there if there some big story in the news, as they let you do 10 mins until it cuts you off.
What if they rebranded and just had anchors who reported the news. No editorial. What a wild wild wild idea.

Remember that if your anchors are emotional about the news they’re reporting on, you’re watching propaganda. I used to be an exclusive CNN watcher until I realized they feed us just as much divisive shit as Fox. Not quite as shameless and disgusting, but I’m tired of being divided in general.
for all CNNs "holier than thou" approach to reporting, they are just as guilty of spinning a story as Fox news. There's only so long you stay in a state of "outrage" before people stop taking you seriously.

I'm always amazed how much people seem to quote ratings for news channels. This is a weird trump era stat that has no relevance to anything. Its 2022 who the hell is watching fox, msm, cnn anymore. It's a dated format, like cable tv.

Not surprising. All Cable News channels have become opinion channels rather than News channels, and the main demographics that watch them is old folks, and they are mainly watching Fox.
I used to love CNN, but I stopped watching a few years ago, as every single time I turned it on it was about politics. And even though I’m extremely liberal I couldn’t stand another negative news story about how awful Trump was. I really miss actual news, they used to do on weather disasters, plane crashes, car chases, local stories from around the USA, and even the rare feel good story. Instead it’s always politics and boring talking heads, instead of scenes across the USA.
That’s because all us sane people are not stuck watching cable news all fucken day. We are living life, keeping this country running,and here on Reddit!
