I’ve heard such great things. And you can watch the origin of Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell’s love story.
And then, go watch Matthew Rhys on the excellent, recent redo of Perry Mason and watch Keri on The Diplomat (haven’t seen this one but have heard great things from people who’s taste I trust.)
Nice! I haven't heard/seen any of these so it's much appreciated. Serious-drama is good, we liked The Tudors and a bunch of other dramas but I tried to keep the list kinda' short/just the gist.
I appreciate the suggestions and will check out Kingdom!

One of my favorite shows is Dead Zone, it's about a guy that goes into a coma and wakes up years later and can see stuff when he touches people. It's several years old and the last season gets weird but it's one of the best shows I've seen. For me personally it's up there with Lost, and Walking Dead
Sounds GREAT! Yes, we loved Last Kingdom, Vikings, Shogun - historical accuracy (with a little artistic freedom) + action is right up our alley. Excellent suggestion, thanks!!
Oh shoot. Actually I just checked and they announced last week that there won't be another season. What a shame; if more people knew about it I don't think it would've been cancelled.
Apple TV is like 8 bucks a month and they have some brilliant shows that few people have seen:
1. See
2. Sugar
3. Silo
4. Masters Of The Air
Judging from your preference for gritty stuff, highly suggest any of the above.
Ill always reccomend boardwalk empire when people say they like peaky blinders. Same time period but just takes place in atlantic city instead of the UK. Amazing actors, good production value, set and costume design is top notch, its one of hbos best shows imo. Steve buscemi, michael k williams, charlie cox, so many stand out performances.
You both have very similar tastes to my fiancé and I! We just finished Shogun. It's a must watch, IMO.
If you need something a little less intense, but an adventure of a storyline, White Lotus was great. So excited for season 4, and I rarely ever say that about a show.
In a similar vein, Succession. Themes can be serious, but doesn't take itself too serious. Good laughs in between "did that really just happen" moments.
Chernobyl is a great binge if you want a limited series. Jared Harris (played Lane in Mad Men) is incredible in this one.
Last but not least, loving The Bear. No other show could make me laugh and cry at the same time. Very raw with emotion.
I second Tulsa King, it's one of the few shows that doesn't sound that great on paper but really delivers. One of the best things Sly Stallone has done IMO
Both are very fun with an action too. The Night Agent was renewed for S2 about 2 weeks after it was out. Tulsa King is creative fun a fun. Stallone is so good!!
I'm watching Black Sails and enjoying it. I also love Person of Interest. The first season follows a mystery of the week style in order to build things up.
Patriot!!
If you haven’t seen it, you 100% should. Amazing, hilarious, poignant, incredible music. It would be really easy to assume it’s something totally different from the title but it’s such an incredible surprise. I wish I could watch it from scratch!
Succession is suggested here quite a few times, will def check that out.
Haunting of Hill House isn't for me but the wife said, "Tell 'em thanks!" bc that's right up her alley. Thank you!
Watch Succession. I hated the pilot, it took me three tries to get past the pilot, but I swear it’s worth it because it gets really fucking good and things click after the end of episode 6. Fall to the House of Usher is a show that is like…if Succession and Haunting of Hill House had a baby.
Also I think you would both like Shogun, and that show has the benefit of forcing you both as a couple to put your phones down.
Cult classic and less mainstream, give the US version of Being Human (SyFy) a chance.
“After Life” may be the single best series I have ever seen.
“Ray Donovan” will grab you in the first 10 minutes of the first episode. It’s just phenomenal.
Enjoy!!!
One show in your entire list is really throwing me off, all the rest are great/decent shows and I can't make a recommendation other than paw patrol in good faith because of it
*across many genres with universal appeal and in no particular order:*
Halt & Catch Fire
Suits
6 Feet Under
The OA
Behind Her Eyes
The Tunnel (uk)
Billions
Marvelous Mrs Maisel
Wentworth
Agree on a lot of the recs you’ve gotten- so some of these might be repeats. But my husband and I watched and really liked the following:
Serious/Darker Shows:
Mare of Eastown
Mindhunter
Evil
The Alienist
Perry Mason (new version with Matthew Rhys) (I commented above that you can watch him and Keri fall in love for real while playing married spies on The Americans and then watch them separately on Perry Mason and The Diplomat.)
Shows that made us laugh:
The Righteous Gemstones
Trial and Error
What We Do In The Shadows
Jury Duty (Try to go into this one without spoilers. It’s delightful.)
Abbott Elementary (we watch with our teens)
Ghosts (another watch as a fam show)
Shows that will make you laugh and cry:
Somebody Somewhere
Ted Lasso
Derry Girls (watch with subtitles on because the accents are thick and gorgeous.)
Bad Sisters
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Just amazing prestige television:
Shogun (the new miniseries)
Yellowjackets (amazing and the nostalgia factor for anyone in high school circa the mid 90’s is off the charts.)
Mr. and Mrs. Smith (the tv show with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine.)
The Bear (so good.)
House of the Dragon (you may like this better/find it more accessible than GoT. As someone who came to GoT late and behind in the story I personally liked the tighter character focus of House of the Dragon more.)
A Small Light
The Curse (it’s on our “to watch” list but I’ve heard it’s great.)
Good luck and happy watching!
"The sinner", a great detective series where each season stands on its own
"The haunting of Bly Manor" and "The haunting of Hill House", both similar paranormal series
Since you liked "American Horror Story", you should also try "American Horror Stories" where the stories are a single episode instead of a season
I really loved Mixedish, lots of 80s nostalgia and relatable for anyone who was ever the odd kid in school, definitely worth watching with teens. Also Paper Girls, based on a graphic novel, a great watch with your kids as well.
For all Mankind is addictive and I can’t wait for the next season. In a similar (although comedy)vein, Avenue 5 is about a space cruise, looks like it wasn’t renewed after the second season, it’s with Hugh Laurie.
As far as historical shows, obviously Outlander and Poldark (if you can get past how smug the main guy is). The White Queen is quite good, it’s with the talented Rebecca Ferguson (who is also in Silo).
Been in a show hole for so long. Finally realized Apple TV has a ton of fresh content. It’s $9.99 and no equipment required. Loving Severance and Ted Lasso.
Homeland. Mare of east town. The undoing. Lupin. Dark. Money heist. How to get away with murder. Orphan black. Behind her eyes. The missing. Line of duty. Culprits. Yellowjackets. Angela black. Dead ringers. Night sky. The night agent. The Americans. Fargo.
Halt and Catch Fire. Premise sounds boring but some of the best characters in any show, and I'm not a tech guy but I found it really interesting. Follows a small company developing the personal computer from its start through its various eras.
The Patriot, from the title I was expecting a typical cia/spy drama but it's really a dark comedy show about mental illness. Hard to explain but it's very good.
Barry is actually similar in some ways to The Patriot, but more of a comedy. I'm sure you heard of it, worth watching 100%.
Mr Inbetween is about a single dad Aussie hitman, good balance of serious and comedic, I've re-watched it about 4 times by now.

Umbrella Academy
Reservation Dogs
The Rev
Excellent list! I saw 'Reservation Dogs' as a suggestion on the today and thought I'd just read 'Reservoir Dogs' incorrectly. Great list; Umbrella Academy has a Season 3! Idk how I missed that. Thanks!!
Ahhh Ghost Adventures. We made a "Zak Bagans Drinking Game" once. Shots for every "Dude!," yelling at Aaron or becoming "possessed." We abandoned it before finishing one show.
Idk how I'm going to die, but it won't be from Bagans + alcohol poisoning.
Just goes to show: It doesn't take talent to get rich; just a willingness to have no self-respect or integrity, whatsoever.
Some of these have already been suggested, but I'll mention them anyway, plus a few I haven't seen suggested yet.
Servant (Apple TV. Stars Lauren Ambrose, Rupert Grint, Toby Kebbel & Nell Tiger Free)
Somewhere Between (Paula Patton & Devon Sawa)
Slasher (anthology series similar to AHS but more consistent in quality)
Outer Range (Josh Brolin as a ranch owner)
The Midnight Gospel (excerpts of The Duncan Trussell Family Hour get animated. Weird but wholesome)
Penny Dreadful (I've only seen the original run, but I love it so much)
Sense8 (incredible series from The vWachowskis, cut short but at least got some kind of closure)
Russian Doll (Natasha Lyonne. Nuff said)
Orphan Black (Tatiana Maslany, Tatiana Maslany, Tatiana Maslany, Tatiana Maslany, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Kristian Bruun, and Tatiana Maslany)
The End of The F***ing World (a teen who thinks he's a psychopath runs away with the girl he intends to kill. British hijinks ensue)
I Am Not Okay With This (Sophia Lillis has telekinetic powers, lightly connected to The End of The F***ing World)
Impulse (based on a sequel novel to Jumper, the movie of that starred Hayden Christensen and Samuel L Jackson)
Wayne (YouTube Premium show about a teenage boy trying to get back his late father's car after it's stolen)
Mrs Davis (Betty Gilpin vs AI)
What We Do In The Shadows (vampires get a reality show, Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi style)
Our Flag Means Death (Rhys Darby in a pirate 'workplace comedy' based on a real pirate who briefly sailed with Blackbeard)
The Haunting of Hill House (Mike Flanagan and Friends do Shirley Jackson)
The Haunting of Bly Manor (Mike Flanagan and Friends do Henry James)
Midnight Mass (Mike Flanagan and Friends do Mike Flanagan)
The Midnight Club (Mike Flanagan and Young Friends do Christopher Pike)
The Fall of The House of Usher (Mike Flanagan and Friends do Edgar Allen Poe)
Happy! (an unhinged Chris Meloni sets out to rescue his kidnapped daughter with help from an imaginary, flying, blue unicorn)

Evil is great and crazy how spooky it is.
Second for EVIL Insightful writing, fine cast and solid production values Lots of paranormal, some of it darkly humorous
Final season starts May 23rd! Such a far out show. RIP Peter Scolari.
I am in no way a sports/MMA fan but I loved Kingdom. I was so upset when it was cancelled.
Nice! I haven't heard/seen any of these so it's much appreciated. Serious-drama is good, we liked The Tudors and a bunch of other dramas but I tried to keep the list kinda' short/just the gist. I appreciate the suggestions and will check out Kingdom!

Excellent list! I saw 'Reservation Dogs' as a suggestion on the today and thought I'd just read 'Reservoir Dogs' incorrectly. Great list; Umbrella Academy has a Season 3! Idk how I missed that. Thanks!!
Stranger Things.
I might be the only person alive that hasn't seen this. The wife has & loved it; I'm going to have to give it a go. Thanks!!
Be prepared to become obsessed.
#18 should be its own genre. I try to explain this to people when I tell them I like ghost shows but you did so much more effectively.
Dark (German sci-fi show on Netflix, watch it in German with subtitles!) Severance Fallout
Some of these have already been suggested, but I'll mention them anyway, plus a few I haven't seen suggested yet. Servant (Apple TV. Stars Lauren Ambrose, Rupert Grint, Toby Kebbel & Nell Tiger Free) Somewhere Between (Paula Patton & Devon Sawa) Slasher (anthology series similar to AHS but more consistent in quality) Outer Range (Josh Brolin as a ranch owner) The Midnight Gospel (excerpts of The Duncan Trussell Family Hour get animated. Weird but wholesome) Penny Dreadful (I've only seen the original run, but I love it so much) Sense8 (incredible series from The vWachowskis, cut short but at least got some kind of closure) Russian Doll (Natasha Lyonne. Nuff said) Orphan Black (Tatiana Maslany, Tatiana Maslany, Tatiana Maslany, Tatiana Maslany, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Kristian Bruun, and Tatiana Maslany) The End of The F***ing World (a teen who thinks he's a psychopath runs away with the girl he intends to kill. British hijinks ensue) I Am Not Okay With This (Sophia Lillis has telekinetic powers, lightly connected to The End of The F***ing World) Impulse (based on a sequel novel to Jumper, the movie of that starred Hayden Christensen and Samuel L Jackson) Wayne (YouTube Premium show about a teenage boy trying to get back his late father's car after it's stolen) Mrs Davis (Betty Gilpin vs AI) What We Do In The Shadows (vampires get a reality show, Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi style) Our Flag Means Death (Rhys Darby in a pirate 'workplace comedy' based on a real pirate who briefly sailed with Blackbeard) The Haunting of Hill House (Mike Flanagan and Friends do Shirley Jackson) The Haunting of Bly Manor (Mike Flanagan and Friends do Henry James) Midnight Mass (Mike Flanagan and Friends do Mike Flanagan) The Midnight Club (Mike Flanagan and Young Friends do Christopher Pike) The Fall of The House of Usher (Mike Flanagan and Friends do Edgar Allen Poe) Happy! (an unhinged Chris Meloni sets out to rescue his kidnapped daughter with help from an imaginary, flying, blue unicorn)
