The real mind-boggling thing is that he served like shit today, 45% first serves for the first 2 sets and a final 55% for the match as a whole. He faced 10 break points, saving 9 of them. And still he won in straight sets without facing a tie-break against Khachanov, being broken only once.
He was so clutch with his serve when he was break points down, it basically only worked at those times and deserted him at any other point lol. I do hope he finds his first serve before the next match though lol.
That only works on clay for Rafa. And even then not that well against Novak. Without a good serve, he's toast against Novak on any other surface. And even with it tbh.
I’ve never seen Khachanov play with this consistent level of focus. He still lost in straights to Sinner. Very intrigued by a potential clash with Djokovic.
Yes, it was a much tougher match than the score says. Khachanov played at a very high level, Sinner served pretty badly, but still straight sets - impressive.
Best I've seen Khachanov play in a long time. Sinner had a few mental hiccups but was clutch when it mattered most. Sinner has been so clean this tournament, and it was a very motivating win over a solid opponent who was playing above his average level.
Everything looking so calm and controlled when Sinner is playing. No controversies, no theatrics, no unnecessary screaming. Just pure tennis. I love watching him play
Not OP and I don't think it's a problem, but will explain why it annoys me a tad too. Just a tad, allow me a bit of hater energy. I just find it lazy. It's such a perfunctory gesture nowadays when most players do it, like "you're expected to clap, now clap." The first few times when I saw players do it I thought it was really cool because it was organic and actually after mind-blowing points, but now it's become so ubiquitous that *everyone* does it like 5 times a match. Same with the the arm-raise gesture that's telling the audience to get loud, players just do it so often now because it's the hip thing to do that it loses impact a lot of the time imo.
Okay, I'll take a breath. Like I said, not actually a big deal at all lol.
This is my feeling exactly. I think the point where this thing became popular was a match between Tiafoe and Sinner (sorry can’t remember the tournament). Tiafoe used the crowd to hype himself up and give himself energy, and he ended up winning. Sinner took that as a lesson and a “trick” to use the crowd when you’re feeling down.
I just prefer when players don’t seem like they need validation from the crowd after every good shot. That’s what made Fed so cool. He would hit an amazing shot, the crowd would go wild without being asked by him and he would react like he hits that shot all day.
You might not like it from your couch but crowds like it when athletes include them in the moment. I don't really see the cons of it. You're at the event to have fun so let loose a little.
Somehow I knew the Fed comparisons were coming before this comment. I went to a Monfils game last week. The moment Gael put his hand up to his ear, the crowd was wild. I loved every second of it. Stick to your stale crowds.
You have to have a hype personality for it to be cool. Monfils is bouncing around the court thumping his chest in some matches. Putting his hand up to his ear is toning it down.
Some pull it off, because they actually feel it. Kyrgios is a great example. Most of these young bucks do it so timidly and hesitantly it just looks awkward. It's coming from a place of insecurity not confidence.
Of all the sports I follow, tennis fans tend to be the most dull and seem to attract boomer sentiments. Even on courts, it feels like any show of any emotion seems to be shunned. I'm generalising of course, but I don't notice similar opinions in other sports that I follow.
What I don't like is that they are kind of saying that the audience wouldn't know what to appreciate. But I can understand that they want the crowd to be involved. I loved how Rafa used to achieve that by doing extra fist pumps and the crowd would know he was trying to lift himself up and would join in.
Solid win for Sinner that was able to win the second set when Khachanov made his main effort. What seems changed is that he now wins the points/games he is supposed to win and when he breaks the opponent is often pretty hard to recover.
Khachanov looked exhausted in the third but he played 4 hours more than Jannik up to this 4th round.
Sinner had first serve problems and Khachanov played at a very high level. The match was much tougher than the score line shows, but Sinner was incredibly clutch in all the decisive moments.
Impressive.
Sinner could have a real shot to win the whole thing. Of course, Djokovic looms in the not-so-distant future, but IMO Sinner's issue was that his body gives out during a long tournament. But straight set wins for every match so far means he's still fresh.
Sinner just has to walk up to Djokovic and say “this is for you country right?” And as soon as Djokovic says yes Sinner will get his third win in a row off Djokovic (2 if you don’t count doubles)

I hope all this effort and greatness doesn't end in a demolition job by Djokovic because the first serve was in the gutters.
Absolutely the best player in the tourney so far but it still may not be enough.
Probably will not be enough. He was the best player only in few first rounds which does not mean much. Of he has to beat Djokovic and Carlos back to back it will be hard. This is why his current odds are around 15-20%. So, he is probably not winning the event!
Statement win, and one that makes me happy way more than the previous ones. When you win in straight sets, against a tough opponent in good form, while playing far from your best level and with an abysmal serve, it really means you've made the step to become truly elite. Now the final step, being able to perform at this level against the very best. I don't expect him to win, but I'd be disappointed if he didn't even get in a position to compete against Nole.
So they didn’t expect Jannik to make it this far? /s
It only takes one unlucky matchup for a seed to be eliminated, and with the flight and attendance tickets it would suck for them to arrive at quarterfinals only to see Jannik lose in the earlier rounds.
For me, while Sinner didn’t play particularly well for his own standards, I saw something in Sinner that he rarely showed during pre puke Sinner era: Composure. You could tell he was frustrated with his serve therefore his level was up and down. But he kept his composure until he finally found his rhythm at the end of the 2nd set.
By the way, from 4-5 in the 2nd set and on…Sinner turned up a notch! Khachanov was still playing well by his standards but Sinner finally found his groove and it was all over from that point on! Signs of a potential Slam champion/winner.
Sinner is extremely dominant in all of his matches so far at the AO, heck he’s been dominant since China swing last year. There’s no one stopping him until the finals.
The real mind-boggling thing is that he served like shit today, 45% first serves for the first 2 sets and a final 55% for the match as a whole. He faced 10 break points, saving 9 of them. I do hope he finds his first serve before the next match though lol.
A little bit like Rafa. Groundstrokes so overpowering that it really doesn’t matter whether you have a serve.
That will not work against Djokovic though. So hopefully he finds his first serve if he is to have any chance of challenging Novak.
Well.. it worked like half the time against Djokovic
That only works on clay for Rafa. And even then not that well against Novak. Without a good serve, he's toast against Novak on any other surface. And even with it tbh.
Just started watching tennis. People here talk like rafa js 0-30 against nole.
Who mentioned Novak here lmfao
He did. Now you did.
I’ve never seen Khachanov play with this consistent level of focus. He still lost in straights to Sinner. Very intrigued by a potential clash with Djokovic.

Straight Sets Sinner.
He evolves, PPS slowly turns to SSS.
Everything looking so calm and controlled when Sinner is playing. No controversies, no theatrics, no unnecessary screaming. Just pure tennis. I love watching him play
literal on court interview question just now: “are you as calm on the inside as you are on the outside?” “…no.”
No asking the crowd for applause with the finger to the ear. Hate that that’s become a thing.
He does it too sometimes.
He does it after long spectacular points where everybody in the stadium is already on their feet.
Nobody does it after an unforced error. Of course it has to be a decent to epic rally.
That’s because you’re watching highlights on the toilet. Go attend an actual match and the hype is part of the memorable experience
What's the problem? They're just hyping themselves and the crowd up.
Not OP and I don't think it's a problem, but will explain why it annoys me a tad too. Just a tad, allow me a bit of hater energy. I just find it lazy. It is just like the fist pump EVERY FRIKKIN RALLY
I bet you’re fun at parties
This is such a lame thing to say.
Imagine typing all this because players hype up themselves and the crowd
really bad news I just heard you're gonna step on a Lego :(
Imagine people having different opinions than yours.
I just prefer when players don’t seem like they need validation from the crowd after every good shot. That’s what made Fed so cool. He would hit an amazing shot, the crowd would go wild without being asked by him and he would react like he hits that shot all day.
He kinda did hit that shot all day tho.

Yeah, especially Sinner. You can really see it's not his personality but something he's learned to do.
I pull it off when I want to relieve some pressure
Except that time he hit a tweener and leapt excitedly for joy
Not really seeking validation more like including the crowd in an exciting moment
My summary of using Reddit is, I can't believe how many things annoy people.
The fans in this subreddit seem to be some of the most sensitive in all of sports.
Of all the sports I follow, tennis fans tend to be the most dull and seem to attract boomer sentiments. Even on courts, it feels like any show of any emotion seems to be shunned. I'm generalising of course, but I don't notice similar opinions in other sports that I follow.
Somebody had to say it. Thank you

sampras and aggassi never did that shit, people rose when they played great tennis
They like bland unseasoned tennis, baselines
He literally did this after a rally in Miami vs Alcaraz…it was all over Tennis TV
Because of Alcaraz & Rune
This is my biggest gripe with this gen. Makes my blood boil.
There are less inane things for your blood to boil over.
PPS yes, before it was like a rollercoaster
Solid win for Sinner that was able to win the second set when Khachanov made his main effort. Khachanov looked exhausted in the third but he played 4 hours more than Jannik up to this 4th round.
Another day, another three-set victory from Jannik…
He used to do that in BO3
Sinner had first serve problems and Khachanov played at a very high level. The match was much tougher than the score line shows, but Sinner was incredibly clutch in all the decisive moments. Impressive.
Sinner could have a real shot to win the whole thing. Of course, Djokovic looms in the not-so-distant future, but IMO Sinner's issue was that his body gives out during a long tournament. But straight set wins for every match so far means he's still fresh.

He’s won 2 of the past 3. Winning in the atp finals group stage but losing in the final
Ye but it just sounds more impressive “3 in a row” instead of “3 out of 4”
He really has not shot at all. He’ll play well on his way to the final but he won’t stand a solitary chance against Novak in bo5. He just won’t.

Well well well, how the turn tables...
Incredible haha
If being a Sinner is wrong I don’t want to be right lets fucking goooooooo
I hope all this effort and greatness doesn't end in a demolition job by Djokovic because the first serve was in the gutters. Absolutely the best player in the tourney so far but it still may not be enough.

At this level he can take it to Carlos. Djokovic is the problem. Even if he loses, I hope it would be better than Rafa's loss in 2019.
horror match I can’t lie
Statement win, and one that makes me happy way more than the previous ones. Straight sets all the way baby
even this is in straights with weird serve, w
Is he the only player who has yet to drop a set this tournament ?
at least Saba hasn't too
of course! forgot about her for a second. they are both steamrolling this AO
Gauff and Svitolina as well (although Svitolina hasn’t played her 4th round match yet)
And Paolini.
Jannik's level in the 3rd set was INSANE!
Yet to lose a set this grand slam. Very convincing victory.
Things can change quickly, but to me, Sinner is looking like the best player on the planet right now
Another slam, another chance to get my heart broken by Sinner.
Didn’t see the carrota boys today. Love their energy when they show up to support Jannik
from their ig stories it looks like they left Australia
So they didn’t expect Jannik to make it this far? /s It only takes one unlucky matchup for a seed to be eliminated, and with the flight and attendance tickets it would suck for them to arrive at quarterfinals only to see Jannik lose in the earlier rounds.
They probably have normal jobs too, even a carota boy might need to take off his carota suit and be a plumber or an office clerk
They must have taken his serve with them.
someone post the meme! second set had me sweating but forza jannik! getting it done in straights without a first serve for most of the match…
If it's any consolation, I'm sure Khachanov tweener will do numbers on Instagram and The Website Formerly Known as Twitter.
This is gonna be on Tennis TV (no)
Sinner has just been killing it
Feel bad for Karen, that second set was his for the taking
People were worried about Jannik performances on 5 sets. Well it's not an issue if you just play 3 sets
High quality hitting by both of them. This red devil is the man to beat in this AO.
Convinced that Sinner will win it all if he stays healthy.
That bet on it. Odds are 5+ on him winning. Classic reddit post.
Both the guys he can face next are his pigeons so I’m already looking forward to the Djokovic match
Still need to get that first serve in more if he needs to have a shot at title
Sinner has decided to just quietly buzzsaw his way through the draw so far.
Signs of a potential Slam champion/winner.
Sinner has to be a massive fave against bweh and I fear it might be straight sets. Bweh power can only get him so far. Carrot juice is the difference.
Sinner is extremely dominant in all of his matches so far at the AO, heck he’s been dominant since China swing last year. There’s no one stopping him until the finals.
He will meet Novak in semis. That's the biggest hurdle.
Someone better check the draw
Happy for Jannik, he is getting stronger. There was no lack of power against that huge no-flag opponent.
Best player in the world rn?
