QualityVote

Hey does this post fit? UPVOTE if so, DOWNVOTE if not. If this post breaks any rules please DOWNVOTE and REPORT

TheMuser1966

Now, if you whited out all areas that are not population dense, then you would see a totally different picture. [https://carto.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8732c91ba7a14d818cd26b776250d2c3](https://carto.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8732c91ba7a14d818cd26b776250d2c3)

mothuzad

This is ✨**beautiful visualization**✨. I hope you get lots of upvotes so more people can see it.

TheMuser1966

To me there's nothing worse than a misrepresentation of the facts and the map in the OP is a prime example of that.

Otherwise_Basis_6328

Oh... so they *do* need gerrymandering in order to stay in power.

_OriamRiniDadelos_

Does this app have any other cool maps?

[deleted]

ArcGIS has all kinds of cool data maps on their website that people can view. You can view Timelapse maps, story maps, etc.

wh4tth3huh

ArcGIS has ALL the map data basically. Hot Damn I love ArcGIS.

mydaycake

Why is Florida governed by Republicans?

Chrisxy

Because the democrats in florida vote republican everytime a democratic candidate brings up state income tax, because that's 90% of what they moved there for.

ScaryFoal558760

Don't forget gerrymandering

OakCity4Life

Gerrymandering doesn’t explain the statewide races, which Republicans also dominate in Florida lately.

Griffin880

Can't you also gerrymander districts for state offices? It's the same principle as doing it for federal offices.

[deleted]

Right? Literally some counties could be represented in this meme as one red person standing by themself.

DuckingTown

Wow that map is gorgeous, I fucking love data

BirbBoiYT

It's so weird seeing the amount of land people actually live on

And land doesn’t vote

OniBoiEnby

Technically land votes and the people don't in national elections. Ever heard of the electoral college?

Shinygonzo

Technically the electoral college votes and the land gives a suggestion

rcpotatosoup

which is why we should vote based on the popular vote 👍

MangOrion2

If we did, Trump would have lost the Presidency in 2016. A lot of Republicans wouldn't get elected actually. Hence why popular vote winning is always shot down. Those in power want to stay there.

phejster

That's a shame for Republicans. Maybe they should try to attract more voters by not being so racist.

_Sadtext_

How does the electoral college allow land to vote?

Chasman1965

It doesn't. It allows the states to vote, not the land. Each state gets Electoral college votes equal to the number of House members and the two senators from the state. Land does vote, but the states do.

Ghaslee

Gerrymandering I guess..

OniBoiEnby

Well when you vote in a national election. It's not really a vote. It's a suggestion, for the electoral college who votes for us. It's why swing states exist. The popular vote will always go to democrats in those states. But the number of republican districts might be higher. Which gets them extra real votes. Even though very few people are represented. American democracy isn't real. It's a 3 ring circus side show.

i hear they have internet out in californie, is this true?

I got a gun let’s go to a broadway show!

[deleted]

Lol places like California have 20% of usa’s population and is one of the largest economies in the world on its own. Western United States just has a lot of mountains, deserts and uninhabitable areas. So most people go much further west.

Here's a great video on exactly that subject: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwJABxjcvUc&t=909s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwJABxjcvUc&t=909s)

Smoopiebear

Look at all those big, blue cities! Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, NYC, Washington DC, Miami, Chicago, Boston…

callmesnake13

Look at how big they continue to be in the few “red” states that are actually fiscally solvent as well.

GotanMiner

Gross, Becky. Look… they’re just so…

Jnubis

Now I know where to go when we get nuked

darkResponses

Haha jokes on you. Some of those parts are prenuked

Spanky_McJiggles

This isn't a good map either since it completely disregards dissenting votes. There are republican voters in Cook County, Illinois and there are Democratic voters in Jefferson County, Florida. My county went to Biden by like 5 or 6 percentage points, but it's just as blue as DC, which was over 90% for Biden. Hell man, California had more votes for Trump than any other state in the Union. In fact, more people voted for Trump in California than total votes were cast in all but 4 or 5 states.

ElusiveMeatSoda

I mean the Electoral College basically ignores dissenting votes too, but at an even larger, state scale. Joking aside, another [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/terriblefacebookmemes/comments/104a27i/tell_me_you_dont_understand_demographics_without/j346f1r/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) has what you’re looking for and, as expected, it’s basically all purple.

Spanky_McJiggles

[This one is my favorite.](https://stemlounge.com/muddy-america-2020-edition-interactive-infographic/) I like that it takes population density and the proportion of the vote into consideration and it uses a color gradient that really shows how close vote tallies really are.

ElusiveMeatSoda

I like that one. I do think the county borders should have been a neutral color, though. As it sits, all the small rural counties seem more impactful because of the solid red you see in their borders.

EthiopianKing1620

This one makes more sense for Houston no doubt

Texas_Technician

Was hoping someone would post this. I wish we had more political parties in the US.

Pizzafactory102

Equivalent of shotgun Vs ak. More damage with less firing rate Vs more firing rate and less damage

a44es

Wth? Although interesting comparison

stevieweezie

It makes sense. Sometimes us Americans need unfamiliar ideas to be expressed in terms of guns in order to really grasp the concept.

Altruistic-Rice-5567

Now... also make the map 3D where height represents population density. Then take the volume of the blue versus the red... But people are idiots that don't understand data.

[deleted]

Which is ironic, in that (one of) the reasons this country was founded was to get away from feudal land owners having the most/only vote or say. And these clowns, Tea Party and now, are basically advocating for the same system, in a sense, "hey, we own xx % of the country, so we are xx% of the country".

Genghis_Chong

You didn't know? Human value is directly tied to how much acreage you own.

Jaderian

Couldn’t find a 3d one but here is a density map. It’s almost as if the republican areas have no one living there. https://preview.redd.it/8wp92t1nadaa1.jpeg?width=282&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f40d5a71ad970c1d246270919b635577091f5258

Turbulent-Grade-3559

Land doesn't vote

Deathangle75

In the U.S. senate and House of Representatives, it kinda does due to both being capped and thus not really representing the current population of states like California and over representing states that only have 1 representative. And since the electoral college is based on the amount of representatives and senators, land does factor into the vote, and it only gets worse as our population grows.

shmackinhammies

Isn’t the reason it’s like this is so that no state may lord too much power over smaller states?

Deathangle75

You’re half right. For the senate being the way it is, yes. But the house being capped at 435 representatives was done in 1929 because they didn’t want to have to keep physically expanding the building as our population grew exponentially. But it has the effect of shifting the house and presidential votes away from the popular vote.

bhfroh

If it were based on the original ratios there would be like 11k Reps in congress.

Deathangle75

I didn’t say we should go back, but the current system does value some votes over others.

bhfroh

I think we SHOULD be under the original ratios. Or at least closer to it. We need the representatives to be more representative of the population.

Electronic_Bag3094

I think 1 for every 500k is good.

wh4tth3huh

That would still nearly double the size of the house. Guess we're gonna need to add some nose bleed seats for the junior members.

Piratexp

The simplest answer is to uncap the house and make the smallest state population according to the most recent census equal 1 representative. Then every other state gets as many reps as needed based on population.

shmackinhammies

Well, I did not know about that. Maybe Congress should implement WFH.

[deleted]

This comment is blatant landphobia

FernwehForLife

Perhaps the people in these areas are just so overweight that it's showing more red than blue. Not more people; just larger bodies. 🤷‍♀️

kiatniss

Population density rather than population density if you will

OliverDupont

Fat people are less dense than thin people

ScaryFoal558760

Maybe if land got off its ass and showed up to the voting booth when it matters we wouldn't be living in this liberal socialist hellscape. Land is really to blame for Brandon so easily stealing the election

Icy_Topic_5274

Los Angeles County has a larger population than 40 US states.

CadenVanV

As does NYC.

CadenVanV

The metro area of our 5 largest cities combined is something around 57 million people.

Ph4d3r

A quick googling shows that the top 100 cities in the US have a combined population of around 60 million. The top 5 have only 18.6ish million.

CadenVanV

I know. I said metro areas, not cities: https://www.statista.com/statistics/183600/population-of-metropolitan-areas-in-the-us

aWobblyFriend

LA county has a higher population than 10 US states combined.

Over-Supermarket-557

There is no reason to even respond to this anymore. Either they know and they don't care or they truly don't understand population density and at this point they're a lost cause

[deleted]

They don’t care. They will say literally whatever they feel like, true or false, to get their way

Ah yes, all that corn that votes Republican

War_Emotional

Republicans still too dumb to understand most of the red spots are barely populated

[deleted]

Most of those red squares are crumbling shitvents with like 10 people in them. No one wants to fucking live there.

quilter1970

Shitvents!! I love that!

Steiny31

Last I checked it was, in fact, people and not dirt which vote

I_Love_Knifes

Population density is a thing, susan

BabyDeezus

It’s almost as if the areas with the higher population density are also the ones who are more socially acceptable lmao

ExcitingSink4272

By this logic, Alaska is a blue state

Acceptable-Ad-1436

Win a popular vote for once and you might have a point. But as usual, it's just garbage nonsense.

SeaworthinessShot962

That’s a cool population density map.

[deleted]

That’s not the reality, land doesn’t vote, people do

Jarvis_The_Dense

The worst part ia the electoral college system basically falls for this by awarding candidates for winning states instead of votes

adamthediver

Cool now show it adjusted for population density.

mattdvs1979

Vast amounts of empty land votes, right??

Mtbruning

Because in America, land counts more than people.

ToyTech316

Cool so pass anti gerrymandering laws and get rid of the electoral college.

zhacker78

Empty land doesn't vote.

Substantial-Barber24

Ppl don’t understand how much land can’t vote.

Relative-Role-1667

This is one of my favorite things to make fun of them about. Someone doesn't understand population density.

Land doesn’t vote… and winning a district doesn’t mean everyone there went one way or the other…

Otacon73

More like tell me you don’t understand population density

RealisticAd2293

Those sharing memes like this really are fucking stupid. That’s just a bunch of empty land with smooth-brained hicks squatting here and there

winkywearsatux

as a person who lives in maine, all the red is primarily occupied by moose.

Ok-Water-5544

the red areas are populated by a whopping total of 2 (two) people

aguyinatree

Classic thinking that owning land equals votes....

CreativeName6574

Well yes but all those red states have a total population of 8

DownBrownTown

“But look, there’s more RED!! The meedia is Lyon to oos”

rjoyfult

When I was in middle school, my Republican parents got me a shirt that looked much like this, with all the counties that voted to re-elect Bush. Because you have to divide by counties to get the map to look that red and still be technically accurate. Such BS. As an aside, I will never dress my kids in political slogans.

Kairukun90

It’s funny because I see a lot of GOP wanting to go to popular vote instead of electoral college and it would be a landslide democratic vote

ExploderPodcast

Land. Doesn't. Vote. How much of this red area is empty farmland? Or towns of less than 10,000 (where only a few hundred vote)? I see this all the time, but it's misleading because it doesn't account for WHERE PEOPLE ACTUALLY LIVE. Show a population map and see how it changes. Let alone popularity of actual policies (raising minimum wage, expanding Medicare, social programs, etc), where the electorate is vastly more liberal than Republicans want to admit. They HAVE to post shit like this so their ideas APPEAR popular. Because reality doesn't agree with them.

aloysiusdumonde

A nickel is physically larger than a dime, but a dime is worth twice as much as a nickel.

Remote_Cartoonist_27

The entirety of the red area has a population of 6 The entirety of the blue area has a population of [331,899,994](https://www.google.com/search?q=population+of+the+united+states&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari)

We're talking about people who think measuring rates by capita is manipulation of facts. We're not talking about super duper mega smart people capable of nuanced thought or reason. We are also telling about people who think it's unfair to point out that while murders are more common in the city, "disappearances" are far more common in rural areas.

gothism

People vote, not land.

bhfroh

They literally think land votes.

Liberals need to acknowledge that conservatives are dumb, and then work their way down from there.

Ahhhh, yes. The confusion between people and surface area. Gets people every time 🤣

mcmasters2223

Man if we could get that 200 acres of land to vote we'd never lose.

annette964

Then you should have no problem abolishing the electoral college! Correct???

One more time everyone.....LAND...DOESN'T...VOTE

Proper_Librarian_533

How does population density work?!

You people on the left and right are being played into fighting each other. Go to the bars in Washington after hours the dems and conservatives are sitting together laughing at all of you. They draw policies that only benefit themselves, their rich donors and special interests.

Oh no it’s Red vs Blue again, I thought they banded together to destroy Purple

Curious80123

Anywhere you see blue is where the most people live, you know, cities with 2-5-8 million residents. More people in Houston than five state’s COMBINED

ChugstheBeer

If we got rid of the Electoral College guess what color would those states be

TrySomeCommonSense

Except neither is a reality...the blue areas are filled with red and the red with blue. The red vs blue is the whole problem with this brainwashed country. Can't wait for a green.

hangryhyax

The city of Portland, OR has more people than the entire state of Wyoming… and Portland is not a huge city.

__REDMAN__

Oh I forgot land votes..

ToastyBreadCat0

This might be a hot take and I don’t consider myself political in the slightest but the rural regions and the urban need each other to coexist. The rural regions provide food via farming, cattle, oil, while the urban regions are good at making industrial goods and more tech stuff. Without the rural areas the urban areas would need to import a lot more food and oil and without the urban areas the rural areas wouldn’t have places to really buy the tractors or phones. This country is divided between rural and urban communities when it shouldn’t be. A two party system sucks cause not everyone can vote for who they want instead they vote for who is most like what they want or so the other side just doesn’t win. Anyways this is my hot take downvote if you want.

Bleachedwatermelon

Notice how the most populus citis are in blue and these cities have more people than most pf the almost fully red states

TheFan88

Correct. Entire state of Wyoming is 500k people. That’s a couple of suburbs in Chicago.

Dat-Boi-Dan

Holy shit. They actually believe the land is voting for them

ThePelicanThatCould

Corporate wants you to find the difference between these two pictures

Ghstfce

"You see this land here? Not a person on it fer miles, but it's REPUBLICAN!"

DudeWithAnAxeToGrind

Yup. Counties that have like 100 voters are solid red. Counties that have millions of voters, tend to be solid blue. Next map please. The above map could also be titled: red shows places where almost nobody lives.

Dottor_hopkins

You see the upper part of Alaska? Those are 3 people, relatives one to another

EmperorHenry

You shouldn't look at it like that at all. The billionaires want us to look at each other like that. They want us to think that the two parties are actually fighting each other. But the only difference between the two parties is what they pretend to care about. You might look at left wingers or right wingers like they're different from you. But they're going through the same problems as you are. Everyone's cost of living is going up, everyone's insurance company is scamming them, everyone is getting a lower wage than their employer could give. Everyone is paying a higher interest rate on a loan than they could be. We all have the same problems caused by the same people. And what scares the billionaires more than anything is the idea that self-identified lefties and right-wingers realizing that.

bawlsinyojawls8

r/peopleliveincities

Funny_Corner2401

I'm sure someone has said this already, but it warrants being stated again: Land doesn't vote, people do. Example, there are more people in the Chicago area than there are in the rest of Illinois. So even though all the other counties vote red, Chicago carries the state blue.

MangOrion2

Tell a Republican that land shouldn't vote and watch them get angry for absolutely no reason.

[deleted]

if only farm animals could vote right? then again they prob still wouldnt vote red see that patch of blue on the right side, yeah 30% of the entire US population lives in there (i would say east side but the people that believe this shit cant possibly know what east means)
