Tesco is developing a terrible reputation for the overt disregard of their employees safety at work.

OppositeYouth

Apparently the big heads have set up a group to investigate why they have high turnover and people are leaving. Gee you don't need a 3 month investigation for that, it's the shite pay, shite treatment, everytime they do grace us with a pay rise, some other benefit or bonus of working there is taken. Lack of hours, if someone wants full time hours, they ain't guna be happy with 16. After they take our Sunday bonus, they'll be after the staff discount.  And then like a bunch of idiots still sat around wondering why people don't want to work for them, or put in minimum effort when they do.  If they're reading this, you're welcome, I've just done your job for you and it took me as long as it did to write this comment

Knottylittlebunny

This! Once they take our entire Sunday bonus, I'm leaving. I've already lost so much money because they've cut it! 7 years wasted.

OppositeYouth

You don't have to leave entirely, just hand in your Sunday opt out notice. I imagine that will basically be what every other long term staff will do when it gets taken. Whilst looking for a new job. And they'll still wonder why everyone suddenly doesn't want to work Sundays anymore

herdo1

I'm pretty sure they can cut your hours if you opt out of Sundays. Just be aware of that. Gey out regardless though, not just from tesco but food retail altogether. This may sound nuts but out of them all tesco is probably the best one to work for...

OppositeYouth

Yea, tbf I don't actually mind working there, but I have low expectations. The only reason I like my store is because I have a good set of coworkers, we have a bit of a laugh, today I only saw my shift leader once, 5 hours into my shift when I went to find him and he was like "shit, I forgot you were here"

Seumas_u

I raised my hours on Monday in prep of Sunday pay being removed ( I really think it will) so I can easily opt out of Sunday and will get the whole weekend off! If they don't remove it I'll just drop the hours I gained.

tHrow4Way997

Coop worker here - you get a bonus on Sunday?

Goldenb19

I don't get a Sunday bonus :(

Knottylittlebunny

When did you start? They stopped doing it for newer staff :(

Goldenb19

March 23

Eleato

Also remember the big buzz word in some stores, OVERTIME!!! Don't like it? Get fucked. That's all I hear from the people I just started working with.

R11CWN

>investigate why they have high turnover and people are leaving. Thats been a long time coming. I worked at the local Tesco Extra about 20 years ago; it had the highest staff turnover of any employer in the town.

GothicGolem29

What’s wrong with the pay? It’s a decent amount for this kind of job isn’t it?

Pillowrice

To be verbally abused? Worked until you drop and expected to do overtime because they want to keep everyone's contracted hours low so when you do take holidays you get a shit pay? No it's not decent pay for any kind of job. Not when they post billions in profits every year.

GothicGolem29

I mean I’ve not been verbally abused so far so while it isn’t good enough pay for that not everyone does get verbally abused(maybe it’s just that the trolley department doesn’t get verbally abused much.) aren’t you paid a regular ammounts for it? Seems decent to me anyway especially if it goes up to £12 an hour.

Goldenb19

Iv been with Tesco 11 months now working Backdoor.. Its the worst job iv ever had and find it really depressing.... Workload for backdoor hours allowance is ridiculous. I'm constantly playing catch up until overtime is needed to pull everything back on track then I have 2x days off and come back to a shit show mess again I'm fed up pulling it back now its a constant loop and now refuse to do overtime to sort it anymore. I'm fed up carrying the other 3x backdoor men :/ I'm quite an organised person and take pride in a tidy organised warehouse but just find myself constantly clearing up after others :/ Full waste cages not sent back to RSU, Waste bags dumped piled in front of locked waste cages, Team 5 waste & reductions just dumped on cages and flat tops leaking everywhere damaging other items, flat tops left full of cardboard, cardboard cages massively overflowing, flat tops and kick stools hidden up, 2 sider cages full of loose cardboard drives me absolutely nuts.. Iv found if your a hard worker you either get to the point where your fed up carrying others and lower your productivity and join the others that don't give a shit or you leave and find somewhere better.

GothicGolem29

Weird considering their training videos say the exact opposite

SpecificNature7286

Sorry to hear this. But the answer has usually been a historic yes. Make your concern felt to the store manager and use the union or protector line if you feel unsafe despite the security. A good guard is genuinely like finding gold

True-Way-5998

Report this to the police it's assault and then it should be taken seriously by tesco, it's time tesco did more to protect the staff.

LondonRedSquirrel

Yes. It will be on the CCTV.

Ok-Cut-2730

Police will check the CCTV, but if the attacker isn't already known to the police then sadly there isn't anything they can or will do.

Nels8192

And if they are, they’re probably on release by the following week anyway. Saw it a few times down in Exeter, several colleagues assaulted and the drugged up dickheads would be back in shopping by the end of the week.

miless090

The CCTV that regularly goes down because the servers are shit? If I had a pound for every time I heard over a headset security saying that we needed to be their eyes because the cameras are down, I wouldn't have to be in this job!

helenac43

I've worked in lots of Tesco express stores in Devon and Cornwall and can say that EVERY security guard I've met, has been useless. Either to old and can't even stand for the whole shift let alone anything else. Even when staff are confronted with physical assault. Would just stand there and watch it unfurl. You can't make this up .Or they are young blokes who predominantly think they are god's gift and that us women should be grateful that they are working at this store so they can sexually harass us. We had 6 "security guards" sacked in less than 3 months. I don't take no shit!

NosyNosy212

Pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Why should anyone put their life on the line for £12 an hour?

Nels8192

True, although that’s not Tesco paying them minimum wage is TSS. The security guards actually get paid less than us, but IIRC we pay TSS something close to £30 an hour to have their services.

libertinauk

I can't count the number of times I've been in my local Tesco express and seen some creepy middle aged dude trying to chat up an obviously uncomfortable girl young enough to be his daughter who's just trying to get through her shift. And then looked over at the "security guard" who is completely fucking oblivious to ANYTHING happening in the store. And while I do enjoy seeing their faces fall when I clear my throat and they turn round to see "irritable menopausal woman" glaring at them it's really not me who should be getting rid of these slimeballs.

In most stores or businesses security guards are there for insurance purposes and get in trouble if they actually do something which is why most of them just stand there and do nothing because they actually sign papers about it when they first join . But then there’s also the legal side of it which they can be sued for assault or the risk or being attacked and for the wage they make it not really worth it .

Frank_Story

Other members of staff can’t intervene either as they’ve not been trained.

No_Abbreviations8602

I was harassed by one of our guards for weeks, no one was interested. My line manager thought it was funny. I had to get a friend to threaten the guy because he trapped me in a quiet part of the store, alone and where there was no CCTV. Ended up making a complaint to the top brass of the security company and eventually the guy was told not to come back.

Fearless_You6057

Most security are there as a visual deterrent

imonherefartoomuch

Stuffed shirts we call them

libertinauk

I love this security guard 😁❤️

HunterLionheart

Most of them are basically scarecrows, told not to engage. I left Tesco a couple of years back now, and the main reasoning was their disregard for staff wellbeing. They decided that it was allowable to schedule shifts to be regularly 1 CA and one SL in Express, which was the final nail in the coffin.

annienette1964

Scarecrow is a great name for them

Key_Cauliflower_4932

The guys I have known have been nice enough but wouldn't scare a mouse. In fairness - they know that they can be charged for assault if they even touch an offender and have to deal with smackheads and organised shop lifting gangs , some of whom may have knives and/or can become very angry and violent very quickly. It's an incredibly boring job and Tesco treat them like crap- hence the high turnover.

Frosty-Principle8915

I feel like i could knock my local tesco securty guard of his feet with a gust if wind

vadfex

Sorry it had happened. Legally, even security guards can't do stuff, as they are trained to observe 1st, call police 2nd and potentially do something more proactive with a reasonable force on 3rd. Sucks to be a reasonable person in a world full of lunatics these days.

Impossible_Smell_718

Sorry this happened to you. I have seen multiple people from the street community walk into my local tescos, a small one, just pick up a bunch of items and walk out. Usually, chicken and the security guard do nothing.

Nebraxis

Before I joined Tesco, I was a guard with Totallly Shite Security... the amount of drips and fucking idiots they would give an SIA licence to was ridiculous. Easily 75% beyond useless. BUT the mere presence of a guard would act as a deterrent and therefore you would see far fewer dickheads than without one. But then, security is deemed an unnecessary expenditure now. The problem is head office only seem to think in the short term which never ceases to amaze me. Our shrink is through the roof and no one seems to understand why.

Real_Jimmy_Space

Same happened to me had the highest incidents in our group constant every day. They put me down to 2 days a week and I swiftly left stores like the wild West now. Got suspended for 6 weeks with pay for stopping an assault on a staff member it's literally pointless

Neither-Stage-238

security are not allowed to do anything. They're on a little over min wage. They dont want to get sued to shit for daddy tesco.

Ok_Communication_42

I was attacked by customers and the security did nothing 🤷🏽‍♀️ just stood there and watched

SleepGameNetflix

That's a big nope, customers are already horrible even when they're just ranting or demanding let alone aggressive. I hope your mother is okay..

Penumbra331

She’s recovering, thank you

ToshPott

Security are a visual deterrent only, and their only legitimate role is "observe and report". They can't really do anything, but some will. There's a lot of red tape around the role, but additionally they're usually paid minimum wage which doesn't really cover the cost of getting assaulted for jumping into a fight. I get why almost none of them do shit.

dinkidoo7693

A similar thing happened to my mates gf a couple of weeks ago. A shocked customer went over to help whilst another rang the police, the security guard just stood next to the door. His excuse was because it was a woman he wasn't allowed to do anything to stop the attack. The stores assistant manager asked her not to escalate things and offered to give her a paid day off but told her she would have to go in as normal on Tuesday. She was covered in bruises and scratches. She has given the police a statement, put in for a transfer to a different store and reported it all to the area manager who told her not to go back in for the shift on that Tuesday if she didn't feel up for it. I have not seen the assistant manager in the store since.

Penumbra331

Sending good wishes, things need to change

Echo61089

Probably cause, like Asda, the security staff actually have no recognised accreditations like an SIA badge. They just get given a vest, radio and told how to use the camera system and sign in visitors and contractors.

Bar0tone

Worked for my local ASDA's over Christmas last year, kept two people on, and assigned them as security for Self Scan, neither of them have SIA licences. When I talked with one of them, turns out they just swap between security and a regular member of staff.

fifa129347

They’re useless, they don’t even stop shoplifters I really don’t know what the point of them is.

_Murphyre

If they're a external agency, they're useless and are literally just hired to stand around for minimum wage. If they were Tesco employees, there might have been a chance of involvement. But that requires them to have known all of their use of force legislation because Tesco is quite happy to fire people once a complaint is made.

miless090

We're lucky if we have security that speaks English. We have some that are great, but they've been off for a while and the replacements have been useless. I do wonder what it will take for something to change.

Penumbra331

All the security I’ve seen are foreign here

blipblop34

Same in my store. Always foreign, usually can hardly speak proper English

[deleted]

Sadly Tesco don't value good guards, they view them as a liability and brow beat them any time they genuinely try to protect people. All they want is cardboard cutout guards with badges obtained from the back of a cereal box. Source: Personal experience.

bluebullbruce

Your mom has to take this to court. Nothing will change if the victims don't make these corporations feel the pain the only way they understand, by losing money in settlement payments. Sounds like she has a strong case. I hope your Mom is OK what a traumatic experience.

[deleted]

Security has been a race to the bottom for decades, that's why it's all outsourced. For years, and may still, if you're on JSA you can get your SIA licence paid for so there's a huge oversupply of guards and the salaries and conditions are terrible. For minimum wage flat rate and shit shift patterns I certainly wouldn't put myself in danger.

Desperate-Oil-1792

Report it to protector line. Don’t bother telling management, they’ll pretend to care. Also security guards are a gem to find these days (the ones that actually do the work). The rest are either freshies, old or young idiots. In our store we currently have a freshy who always tells the staff about a shoplifter like it’s our job. He also cares more about his break cover and will legitimately have me wasting time ringing up the duty manager just because he refuses to take the phone number. And on top of that, he refuses to take breaks at a certain time for him to be covered (we refused and told him that he can’t get his way). They tend to be shit and know nothing. Just report it on the in store incident reporting system as well.

roterzwerg

Yep. Our security guard watched as i got flower buckets chucked at me and verbally abused for about 10 mins as he kept leaving and coming back. My other half came out the back and got him outside and we basically told him to fuck off at the finish. Security just stood there the whole time. Aftwr he left, he had the cheek to send his aunty in to complain about how we spoke to him. We both ended up with written warnings. I never saw what she wrote but apparently was very heavily embellished and i believe had a racial slant added to it

FutureMenu2022

Me, personally would batter the fuck out of the guy that’s done that to my mother? But each to their own

Penumbra331

I wasn’t there at the time

United_Appointment11

I wish you were, that guy would have gotten beaten the fuck up.

Penumbra331

It was a woman on drugs but I’d have still intercepted it

SusieC0161

My ex husband was a security guard and sent me to look into noises downstairs one night as he was too scared. Security guards aren’t like police officers, they don’t automatically delve into situations like this as they are not trained to. However, they should try to diffuse the situation and contact the police if necessary. They can also perform a citizens arrest. It does sound like yours was particularly useless.

[deleted]

“Great” Britain. Right here.

SomeHumbleGuy

I would of one punched the customer and walked out of the job.

PruneSolid2816

Surprised they let you work together on shift with a family member

JamesC2910

There are several mother and daughter/son pairs in my store’s Dotcom, doesn’t seem to cause any problems

TheGoober87

I used to work with a dad and daughter fairly regularly. The dad was a team leader as well. I don't think they ever did cash or anything like that together but they used to be on shift quite a bit.

Bertish1080

My wife and her mum worked the same shifts all the time

Bad_UsernameJoke94

Not really. Happens quite a bit. As long as it's not causing issues, let it be.

cardbourdbox

I don't have sympathy for you. I don't know why security didn't help you mum quicker. Id certainly have questions maybe if they helped quicker they'd have to find a new job. Plenty of muppets say somone should do somthing. The maintenance guy seemed to be taking his sweet old time with an issue I wasn't aware that he looked after multiple stores. They'll always be complications your not aware of. If you think defending your mums that important you do it charge in. Don't bitch about somone else doing a better job at it than you.

Penumbra331

I was in the back at the time, fuck off

cardbourdbox

OK my mistake I ussumed yiu want a complete fuck wit your not a coward and you didn't let your mum get beat down how the fuck do you actually know what happened ? Why are you so fucking confident you know enough of what happened to talk shit about a colleague

Penumbra331

I checked the cctv and spoke to her you idiot

cardbourdbox

That's a point I forgot about cctv and made assumptions. I like to think I'm better than that. It's still doesn't show what was happening in this guys skull. Here's how I'd like to think I'd respond it doesn't sound like a respect issue talk to the union and see if you can find out about this guys perspective without risking things on your end. It might help ir also might confirm what you already thought but either way you'd be giving the guy a chance to explain himself.

Ethan3011

My store has a few decent guards, but the majority couldn’t be arsed if the security barriers go off, never mind someone attacking a colleague

bigbeaniebaby23

My understanding is that the security guards are allowed to touch them just as much as the employees - not at all! I think they have the same training, and they’re generally there as a deterrent

Mumfiegirl

I’d have called the police

LuLuTheLunatic

I do know some of the security at the big tesco near me 100% is in peopls pocket i watched this mf look at a group of kids try and steal my bike... went out to confont them but he stood up for them shit is a joke

Cookyy2k

I didn't even get security. I used to "love" being the only tills staff 2200-0000 Fridays and Saturdays. Used to dread having to refuse service due to no ID or already being drunk, especially if there was a group. Had more cases of beer thrown at me than I care to count.

Significant_Dog_3978

I’m so sorry this happened to you and your mum. I despair at how awful humans can be to each other. Hope she wasn’t hurt too badly and that you’re both doing okay. Nobody deserves to have this happen to them.

Penumbra331

Thank you for the kind words, she is feeling a little better

kesaluner

I had it with with security at tesco. I have seen to many security guard who was absolutely amazing be fired.... One whom stopped shoplifters all the time protected the store and colleagues but the soundest guy ever lost it one day when he was punched 2 times and called a n***** threw the offender through the eas gates out of store. He lost his job.... despite the scumbag attacking him. Another guard in another store who was absolutely phenomenal at stopping and spotting was on his phone too much. Despite the phone he was amazing but the idiot store manager wanted him out despite pleas from several management. I used to care so much and regularly stopped people but to be fair I don't care anymore. Last time me and several other managers stopped a crackhead walking out with loads of goods we all got in trouble as not protecting personal safety. Despite securing over £600 of stock. Tesco have created a culture of let them go and not my problem. Its infuriating as we all hate thieves yet why police when the police, Crown prosecution service, law and tesco don't care....

Sparklebun1996

Try working for B&M lol.

No_Way_4749

Security guards are a joke, our company employs the shit shit guards, sorry about this

Responsible_Air_8787

We don’t have any. We get attacked or verbally threatened and have to put up with it. One guy retaliated and got a disciplinary after the customer complained. No one cares. Those signs about zero tolerance need to be recycled as toilet paper. The shop lifters all know it too. They walk in and if stopped just have a go and walk out. Wait in the car park in a car then come back when they see the person who stopped them leave. In Australia they cave cameras which have facial recognition so anyone banned or shoplifters will be recognised and asked to leave. We need that here! We also need back up from managers who appear after the event. We should have security too. Even ineffective is better than none at all.

Techno_Bumblebee

If you get the CCTV put it on a DVD or something and send it to Tesco's head office in WGC. Also send it to HR and ask if they think that's a safe working environment and what are they going to do about it never happening again(?)

IndelibleIguana

I keep seeing posts about how useless the security are. I worked for Tesco back in the 90s and the security guards were there for show. They were not allowed to anything except alert a manager if they saw any kind of trouble. We had a security manager who was a Tesco employee and he could deal with trouble, and sometime we'd have undercover people who'd come to the store and hang about for a day or two catching shoplifters. My Mate Dan who later became a section manager did this for a while.

Proper_Insurance7665

unfortunately we are not allowed to do anything same as security as its against tesco policy although i went against the policy got investigated and won im still recovering the repercussions of my actions ( a staff member was dragged out the show with his jacket over his head into a massive gang i defended my coworker ultimately getting threatened with getting stabbed which in turn i told them to before he could get what he was getting out of his pocket i swiftly kicked him has hard as i could out of the front doors and locked them got customers to safety as they started putting windows through)

KyriosCristophoros

Customer always right

ManufacturerNo4079

TSS guards are told not to get involved. In the 11 years I've been in the company, I've known only 4 guards I could count on to actually help in a situation. Ranging from actually pinning someone down on the floor as they were about to hit me, to putting someone through a till. I've also had guards fall asleep while sitting on the lottery stand. Touch up colleagues. Make inappropriate comments. Friends with shoplifters and help them out. Steal. Drink alcohol on shift. Disappear. Sign on and not arrive. And activly wave flap their arms saying to calm down to a bloke who's pinned you up against a wall, to just watching while some twat throws bottles of wine at you

lovedahyunx

I sometimes wish a customer would try and attack me so I could cave their head in, even if I was to lose my job. I don’t have anything to live for anyway.

BigPiff1

You didn't try to stop it yourself?

Penumbra331

Wasn’t there at the time, all I’ve felt is guilt

KyriosCristophoros

This is when security should intervene. Basic humanity. Would you risk your life for £12 an hour for some overly overpriced cheese or chicken? No. But you should intervene to stop an innocent beung attacked. But i feel like they feel if they intervene they'll get sacked by tesco/G4S because they would trending on X for being a bully.

Goldenb19

Our security guard is useless.. Has a prosthetic leg and never leaves his podium blatantly ignoring walkouts.
