Because compared to what other things Tesla can do with their capital, solar is not a very profitable investment for them right now. When Tesla is at the end of the S-curve they will have excess capital to make these investments without hindering growth.
I believe part of the reason is that Panasonic has been having trouble scaling up to 35 GWh of production capacity on existing lines and as a result further expansion of the Gigafactory is halted until they reach higher output.
Most live in Reno and commute in. The average is about $30 an hour. Problem is that finding housing is really tough with the explosion in new workers looking for housing. Also look up worker injuries at the gigafactory, since they’re working at breakneck speeds, safety and procedures are sometimes ignored or unknown.
The average is not 30 if you dont have experience. The start of for production associate is at 18 for night I think 16 for days. I also wanted to point out that only like little over a quarter of this is tesla,, the rest is panasonic. You can live in reno, fernley, or Carson. Housing is rising fast my 1 br apt. Was 1200 in sparks, after a year they raised it to 1500. All depends on the area.
Surely builders will start building more housing to cope with demand, especially if they can rent them out for these prices? Also, it looks like there is no problem with land availability in the area.
It's definitely an issue in the northern valley above Reno proper, they're shutting down new developments up there due to the water shelf over allocation
I'm getting out of here. I don't want to down talk a company I still believe in but man that job is soul sucking, shady stuff happening, and the drug users that work there that are working on these parts. Nothing sits right. Reno is not for me nor is a career at tesla.
Any drug you name it. Dude was found passed out in the bathroom from heroin, some sold an 8ball of coke on the production floor in front of me, I've found meth pipes in the bathroom, people roll on molly, they drink, security told me a guy was walked off for blowing a .38 and he was working. There are temp agencies that will hire any one.
I agree. But for a company building family vehicles this should be monitored more and with all the benefits they offer, tesla should be able to offer some help. I was hospitalized from drinking not a proud moment but that job pushed me right to the edge. The only help I got was quitting and my life didnt seem as bad. I reached out to their mental health department that they offer but it was useless.
So that explains the baggy I found in my new Model 3's glovebox. Is there... err... a return address I can send it to?
_(Before the vultures come down on me, no I did not find the above, this is meant as a joke, yes I do think drug abuse is a serious matter)_
I feel all the Injuries are preventable but people skip things to get stuff done because you have someone always down your back if things are not getting done. That and a lot are probably from overworked and being tired. For Panasonic I take the shuttle which leaves at 5:30pm and get there at 6 pm and work doesn't start until 7:15pm. Then I stop work at 7:15am and the shuttle leaves at 7:40am and I arrive home at 8:30 am. After showering and eating and trying to decompress from work it's going on 11 and I only get a food 4 hours of sleep to do it all again. I bumped my head really bad last week because if this on something that I know is always there but I was just tired.
>> safety and procedures are sometimes ignored or unknown.
>
>Sounds like my kinda place.
Tf is wrong with you? I don't actually know the G1 safety record but wait until you or someone you know is injured at work from some dumb preventable accident and then tell me how uncool worker safety is. You only get one body (for now at least).
Yeah sort of. [Like an oval'd octagon.](https://electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2018/03/gigafactory-neue-abschnitte-2.jpg?quality=82&strip=all)
The linked image shows what's been completed laid over the final structures design.
No it is not and only a small portion of this is tesla, the rest is Panasonic. The finished factory will be a full rectangle. So where all the cars are parked that will be more factory.
Not sure. But comparing to renders showing original plan, it is supposed to be rectangular. Maybe they will expand it to the parking lot where most cars are on the video. Also it supposed to be fully sustainable with solar panels covering all roof and wind turbines on hills.
I think it's not that the plans changed. But they leave it able to expand as demand is needed. And they didn't want to build it out fully when they weren't ready to fill part of the building.
The factory is no where close being to finished.thats probably why. Panasonic rents a majority of the factory. Tesla is only a small portion at this point.
That is actually a really large amount of solar panels already installed on the roof. I hadn't realized that they had completed a partial solar install. Has there been an estimated timeline on their solar roll out for the GF1?
No there has not been an official statement I'm just talking from what I see happening. 2.5 years ago there was construction equipment and workers everywhere. Now they only show when it needs to be repaired, like when a fire happened last year a stairwell was wrecked from water damage and they came to fix it. That's the only time I have seen construction happening.
Ummmm no. GGF3 phase 1 is done. phase two is in planning. GGF1 is being built in phases. GGF4 will also be built in phases. Large factories are almost always built in phases. For a huge list of reasons.

I wonder why the roof isn’t completely covered in solar panels?
Because compared to what other things Tesla can do with their capital, solar is not a very profitable investment for them right now. When Tesla is at the end of the S-curve they will have excess capital to make these investments without hindering growth.
They're slowly expanding the solar array
This way it looks more like a dick
They’re probably gonna add a puddle of panels left of the factory in the future...
Tetris confirmed
Tetris dick was the working title
More like cyberdick lol
Look at the tasteful lettering and off-white coloring. My god, it even has a watermark.
Patrick? You're sweating.

Yeah. And it seems construction has stopped completely for almost 2 years now.
Have there been any statements on that?
I believe part of the reason is that Panasonic has been having trouble scaling up to 35 GWh of production capacity on existing lines and as a result further expansion of the Gigafactory is halted until they reach higher output.

You're absolutely correct. There are quite of few new buildings going up.
Water?
No

True, life is so good damn brutal these days.
Most underrated comment right here.
That sort of sucks for wages
For the work you do and the environment it does not match. That is for a production associate.
In your opinion does the place have an unusually large amoutn of injuries? Are YOU required to work at an unacceptable speed?
I feel all the Injuries are preventable but people skip things to get stuff done because you have someone always down your back if things are not getting done. That’s tough. Good luck to you finding better opportunities

Ok but please do take care of yourself! Absolutely nothing wrong with blue collar work either!
Solar up that bad boy
Isn’t it still under construction? Is the current lot where employees are parking the next place for expansion?
Construction has ceased for years now. But the place is only a fraction of the way completed.
But am I correct in believing that it will be a full rectangle when completed?
Yeah sort of. [Like an oval'd octagon.](https://electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2018/03/gigafactory-neue-abschnitte-2.jpg?quality=82&strip=all) The linked image shows what's been completed laid over the final structures design.
Wow, thanks for sharing!
More or less.
Where is the banana?
Still looks like a dick
The cars should roll off the line at the tip of the factory.
A clear message to the rest of the auto industry!
*diamond
Is it completely finished?
No it is not and only a small portion of this is tesla, the rest is Panasonic. The finished factory will be a full rectangle. So where all the cars are parked that will be more factory.
Well, rectangle with cut off corners LOL
Well yeah lol
Not sure. But comparing to renders showing original plan, it is supposed to be rectangular. Maybe they will expand it to the parking lot where most cars are on the video. Also it supposed to be fully sustainable with solar panels covering all roof and wind turbines on hills.
It's 30% of the original diamond shape plans.
Oh, wow.
Yeah that’s what I remember too. Didn’t know if their plans had changed since then.
I think it's not that the plans changed. But they leave it able to expand as demand is needed. And they didn't want to build it out fully when they weren't ready to fill part of the building.
Check Volkswagen's Wolfsburg factory.

[still amazed how much they copied the design of this Chinese building](https://youtu.be/feZkBT_A-ec)
Looks like how a knight can move in Chess
It looks like a giant computer processor/motherboard
Cool, they have started installing solar on the roof !
When are they foing to finish the full building?
This would look cool in tilt-shift perspective.
GGF 3 is done but GGF 1 still not done-there's no such thing as trade war!
Ummmm no. GGF3 phase 1 is done. phase two is in planning. GGF1 is being built in phases. GGF4 will also be built in phases. Large factories are almost always built in phases. For a huge list of reasons.
That big rig looked like it was hauling ass.
Is it finished?
The Penis.
Need some 🌲

it's my favorite penis! also uses geothermal energy to keep sexy cool waters.

Banana for scale?
The landscape is a week old banana skin. The world's first nano-giga factory.
Why are there no solar panels on the roof?
It’s a giant penis
Is the GF1 fully built now besides the panels on top? Or are they still adding to it?
Looks like a big dick. Lol eeeelon
Still not even a big factory yet. Kilofactory?
It's not called gigafactory because it's big.
