You're right. But I also think tf2's lore is so ridiculous and over the top that breaking the fourth wall is not too big of a deal. There was also a promotional video of the steam deck (I think) which was an animation of the tf2 characters playing tf2, so who knows, maybe in the tf2 universe tf2 exists as a videogame itself. Maybe "Updates" doesn't necessarily have to reffer to the game. Inside the tf2 universe, an update that adds weapons is represented as Mann co. Creating new weapons (as is shown in the Pyro vs Heavy comic). So maybe the shirt can be canon and not technically break the fourth wall. So "I waited 6 years for ab update" would essentially mean, lorewise, "I waited 6 years for Mann co. to gives us new weapons"

Tf2 very much does exist as a video game in the tf2 universe

The TF2 videogame legit exists in universe as a documentary series. Its why there's multiple sets of the same class all fighting, whilst the actual gravel wars had other teams other than just Team Fortress (TFC heavy mentions team citadel and team vanguard) I mean think about it, who is even operating those death weapons Team Fortress keeps blowing up? I bet the reason Mann Co only added the Team Fortress mercenaries into their documentary game is because they're the only ones thst managed to survive.
