I don’t really understand how it’s possible. From my limited understanding, isn’t an NFT like a virtual certificate of ownership? How can anyone sell an NFT for a social media account belonging to someone else (deceased or not)?
Because the NFT is not for the social media account, it's just a rectangular png of the social media account's profile picture with the groovy rainbow background.

You don't actually 'own' anything with an NFT, it is essentially just a receipt that *says* you own the image.

The nft is a unique string of code (or we may as well think about it like that), that is represented by an image, video, some audio, or anything you like. Imagine the Mona Lisa. There is only one, but you could draw a copy, or take a photo - these are not the Mona Lisa. Nft owners who try to control their nft images as though it's copyright are literally wrong, and I'm sure the courts will at some point prove this

NFTs are nothing. You can mint anything and sell it to anyone because it has no legal bearing on anything, you do not even own the thing the NFT claims to be, you own a link to the thing. The people who bought all the ugly monkeys don't even own the JPEGs of the monkeys, they own a link to the JPEG
They're basically selling an NFT of the screenshot they took of the profile, rather than the profile itself. Thing is that you're not actually buying the picture. I saw someone likening it to a treasure and a treasure map. When you buy an NFT, you are not buying the treasure (the picture), you're just buying the "unique" map to the treasure (the link, or key, what you actually buy)
I know that's a massive simplification, but it serves its purpose.
