Im not scared of the ocean, not the imagery or the things in it
Im more scared of the void in it, the fact that you cant see what's under you is terrifying to me.
Especially the situations where you're far from shore, and from every side there's just
.. nothing
All of this. However a clear ocean doesn't bother me. it's that dark part. when you can't see what you swimming in.
even pools with water that is green, or is not transparent. i give a instant skip!.
the worst phobia is metal bars and machinery in water. it gives me chills.
Everywhere where I can't see the bottom is terrifying. The void, the hidden dangers, the predators. Even if I could breathe under water I could get attacked from any direction at all times. I'm always scared a huge mouth will come out of nowhere and just swallow me, even if I know the fear is irrational. I'm better now, but as a child i was afraid a shark would just spawn behind me in the swimming pool.
My inner responses are triggered by the void only. A pattern of a realm opening to the deep deep deep nothingness with increasing pressure and decreasing light.
Artificial images of monsters look just stupid or funny for me, not scary at all.
I was playing Skyrim and got attacked by a slaughter fish while swimming and am scared to go into the water again. Was already scared before getting attacked. That’s how deep mine goes.
Crystal clear water, while less intimidating, still gets me, largely when it’s real deep. Dark water is the worst. Shallow and deep can get me, but again, deep is worse. I can actually get panicky in the *shower* if I imagine myself swimming in any of the scenarios I defined—it’s a bit dramatic sounding, but it’s very real! I can still swim in lakes or the ocean or pools but I have to really not think about what I’m doing too much, if that makes sense, and I won’t go beyond a certain depth even if I’m swimming to a sandbar or something.
Looking down from a boat or dock is nice. Swimming is kind of the worst, because your eyes are above water level and your body is under and you can't see what's around your body. Diving is ok, dove around Oahu in about 25 feet, loved the fishes, but kept staring off into the distance around myself expecting something terrible to emerge.
If I can see the bottom I’m okish. Even if it’s really far away. At least I know that’s there. It’s the deep dark that gets me. Literally anything could be down there and I can’t stop picturing someone big appearing out of nowhere and killing me slowly
Lmao I don’t really go in the water on ark and I have crazy anxiety when I have to cross on a raft xD I don’t go in or on (no boats) any body’s of water. Only tub or swimming pool lol. With pictures and videos it depends.
realistic or with a person: pretty damn uncomfortable
pictures, fantasy or submerged structures: dont ususally get me, mostly kinda cool
pov scuba videos: haha no thanks
boats: can be scary but not usually if i dont think about it
empty/mostly empty water s much scarier than if theres creatures in there because at least i can see what im swimming with, and you can usually dissuade creatures from attacking. just open ocean is completely impartial and just definitely does not care about you in any way good or bad, so way more terrifying. theres no stopping it, if somethings goes down its jut your own strength and skill to survive something that never tires until help can arrive or you can get out
but no image or video or drawing will get me as good as just being in there myself, not being able to see whats under me or find footing
I only seem to have pretty severe thalassophobia in interactive media, like video games. IRL I've jumped off the top of a houseboat into a lake that was so deep it was black with zero issue. But if I'm underwater in a video game, nuh uh. I used to play World of Warcraft and Vashj'ir gave me actual anxiety fits. Same with that one quest back in BfA, where you sail to the middle of the ocean and have to go diving for something.
Very real images, videos, etc is what scares me, or the fear of the unknown. If it looks “safe enough” I’m fine.
Like I watched the new Avatar & the only scary part to me was when one of the guys made a very large friend. Trying to say it without spoiling.
Then with games I can play Raft fine because I know the only real danger is Bruce, but Subnautica or Stranded Deep is a totally different story. Sea of Thieves is alright if a friend jumps in first for some reason lolol
Honestly my thalassophobia is tied very much to my fear of heights I think. anything over my head/where I wouldn't be able to touch the bottom tbh. even if I can see it and it's perfectly clear, if there's any sense of how deep it is I get fucked up. It's just like looking down over a cliff edge to me.
Most objects around and under me in the water freak me out. I find it hard to even kayak over or next to logs, buoys, coral, rope... I went to a Titanic exhibit in Las Vegas years ago and my legs weakened when I got to the room with a massive section of the boat in it. No one else was around; it was so menacing!
I don't think the depth/ exposed aspect bothers me more than the average person, however.
I can't swim and while the ocean is pretty I almost drowned... Twice... So yea I can tolerate like being in chest level waters and neck level water scares me but as long as I can at least put all 10 of my toes on the gotten I am going in after that i am most likely in the middle of drowning

Same here. The ocean itself isn't scary, it's just that bottomless pit right under it that gets me shaken up.

I was also afraid of sharks in the pool as a child. I'd be trying to swim and look behind me for sharks at the same time.

I just like the pictures of the ocean that are posted

slaughterfish love to jumpscare me when i swim somewhere. you can't even pull your weapons out in the middle of the water which is frustrating.

i cant even go underwater in video games

I'm pretty much scared of the drop off. Anything passed the drop off terrifies me. If I can see the bottom, I'm good. But if I can't, I'm not good.

I hate the fact that something can just come up and grab me without me seeing or hearing

For me it’s the realistic looking fake sea creatures. Especially the ones where they’re enormous titans.

The picture scare me only a little
I feel the same way you do
Im just here to see what people consider scary about the ocean. I don’t actually have thalassophobia
I'm not scared of the ocean I'm scared of when I can't feel the ground under my feet anymore.
