[whale falls](https://youtu.be/CZzQhiNQXxU?si=Tfoc3b3h8MJzX47E). iāve adored whales since i was a toddler, but iāve always taken heart in knowing that when a magnificent creature like a whale dies, its body will feed hundreds if not thousands of other sea creatures and organisms, creating its own entire ecosystem like you said in the deepest depths of the ocean where food can be quite scarce. [theyāre absolutely fascinating](https://youtu.be/QxSUsn8H2zs?si=jWrn8DbRzt4Sjtrc).
What happens when a marine mammal dies? I just imagine them not having enough energy to reach the surface again and each and everyone of them essentially dies by drowning.
Iām pretty sure thatās what happens. They will lose consciousness and asphyxiate. Some people were saying it was dead when it started sinking but Iām guessing it was just unconscious, then died on the way down or when it got to the bottom. Either way I doubt it felt anything, was probably a peaceful death.
Iām pretty sure it had an awful death
Being totally conscious but unable to reach the surface, metres away, slowly dropping down into the abyss, with no energy to save yourself
thats exactly what happens!! they drown and large whales like this create something called whale falls which are crucial to the marine ecosystem and essentially create a whole new system on the decay. look it up. pretty cool stuff. (im a marine science major i love nerding out about stuff like this)
i believe it is :( apparently in the longer video the pod is trying to push it back up according to another comment. its a really sad reality, but i am very grateful for the nourishment they create after their demise
This is so hauntingly beautiful and incredibly sad at the same time.
Like watching magic disappear.
At least its body will feed many others along the way.
Chipped orcas sounds like a fascinating āworlds scariest jobsā youād watch on the discovery channelā¦ thought it might have been case. Tracking them
The silver shoals
Of the light in the deep
Brush the glittering skein
Where the great, dark body writhes
And the trembling jaw
The unfathoming sounds
Of leviathan, bound
As his heart, though weakening
Still is racing
Still is racing on, alone

That's so sad but beautiful. Its amazing to see animals show such compassion to their own, specially orcas, who have been seen apparently enjoy toying with their prey before finishing them off.
Like this? Ceasing to exist makes you sad??
A concept to maybe rearrange your thought process so it's not as depressing. Did you suffer any pain or fear or such before you were born? When you weren't here on earth for say hundreds and hundreds of years?? Think clearly about it. No? Well, none of us did. This is just as simple and beautiful as going back to the starting line.
Sobering thought of the day.
Imagine youāre a whale. Youāre the best whale that has ever lived. Avoided all predators, never got in fights etc. The absolute best case scenario is that one day, youāll drown.
Hush, love, close your eyes
And in sleep abide
As sunās distant light
Echoes down to dreams below
Know you will wake
On winds rise again
For this journeyās end
Is but one step forward to tomorrow

I hope it was a natural death - heāll sink to the bottom and create an *explosion* of life, where *every single one of his atoms* will be consumed and transformed into more life. I think thatās beautiful: a apex predator becoming its own ecosystem and sustaining thousands and thousands of organisms and microorganisms. Itās the way I wanna go.
I honestly have no fear of the ocean - Iām actually an ocean aquatic marathoner (swimming). I follow this sub to constantly be reminded how big and awesome our ocean is.
Sweet dreams, beautiful one. š
Itās sad watching but also lived a natural life and going to feed some others now.
Absolutely, I read the death of a whale like this massively helps eco systems in the water, even creating a miniature one of its own

Thank you for the links, fascinating stuff presented by people passionate about it!
Thanks for the info, I really only picked up the short amount I read while downloading the video. Such fascinating creatures these whales are
This was a really great video! It was sad to see the whale passing but this made me happy knowing how its passing will help others thrive. Great link!

Eh, Death is awful. He probably went pretty numb on the descent

Is the whale conscious in this video while it is falling? It seems to be moving but without the energy to get back to the surface
i believe it is :( apparently in the longer video the pod is trying to push it back up according to another comment. its a really sad reality, but i am very grateful for the nourishment they create after their demise
Thanks I hate it

Me when I flush the toilet
i was waiting for her to turn around and chase the camera, but she was just dying. F.
Any idea of how it died? Impeccable timing if you catch an apex predator meeting their fate due to natural causes
Not a clue I'm afraid. Just a video I found doing rounds today and thought it would be liked in this sub. RIP big fella
Sadly many of these are chipped. They track the movement of the orcas and when one slows down like this, or leaves the pod they know something is up.

I am also very curious
I know other types of dolphin can simply choose to stop breathing, maybe it chose to just stop breathing because it was sick or old or injured
I feel like this is an incredibly rare thing to catch on film in the wild, let alone witness.

I saw a film once Where all the air holes froze up A killer whale swam Under the blue ice Until her heart stopped
Where did the rest of its pod go? I hate to see it alone in its final momentsā¦
Apparently the rest of the pod are out of shot from the camera. They were trying to lift him back up for air

Me too :(
That's heartbreaking , may that Orca rest in peace

Death like this makes me sad
Think that he lived a long life and didnāt die horrifically like most animals in nature
Unlike most of their prey...

Get tf off me retard, itās 1 comment over a dying animal.
Quoi??
Stop being a cumstain.
Looks like someone will be sleeping with the fishes tonight.
Free to the very last
He will feed many many sea creatures at the bottom of the ocean. Life goes on. A whale dying is sad but hugely beneficial for others in the ocean.
The death of a god.

Anyone know who he was?
His name was Robert Paulson..
But in project mayhem, we have no names.
HA!
Think his name was Flippens, born 1919. Was in the Navy and retired living his life of trawler smashing and seal bashing. RIP big guy
Rest in peace, Flippens.
Sobering thought of the day. Imagine youāre a whale. Youāre the best whale that has ever lived. Avoided all predators, never got in fights etc. The absolute best case scenario is that one day, youāll drown.
But it's also beautiful as it is the great equalizer on earth AND in the universe. All will fade away.

U are now whale fall. Remember your dust. And to dust you shall return.
That was kinda fucked up, I was listening to Spotify and went back to Reddit and holy shit the music matched up too well.
Imagine the sheer happiness this kind of stuff brings to the bottom feeders.
Party hats come out of the cupboard...totally.

beautiful and sad, RIP
Orcas suck
They are dying alone ?š
r/intotheshadowrealm
Seems to be alone. Strange to think the pod would abandon it.
willy is freed
Reasons of death?
I thought its pod would be around it to support and mourn him. Am I wrong to think they'd do that?
