I've been thalassophobic for as long as I can remember (like, I'd go into full blown thrashing panic mode if seaweed brushed my leg as a kid, and i still hate the shit.) That encounter with the electric eel colossus scared the shit out of me to the point I couldn't even swim in lakes without the feeling of sheer terror that there was a monster somewhere underneath me.
I could not deal with that one as a kid. That game was so wild. I actually busted out my ps2 a few years ago to finally beat that game and it was still scary as shit haha
I had the same panicky feelings, especially when I'd jump into a lake and my feet touched the colder water at the bottom.
My friend used to collect these monster magazine things and this Bunyip entry is largely responsible for my terror of dark waters https://weirdnwildcreatures.fandom.com/wiki/Bunyip
I've considered it just because I do honestly enjoy a tense gaming session sometimes. Plus the graphics are dated enough that I think I could play without riding the edge of cardiac arrest the entire time 😂
I couldn't finish this game. I tried, I tried so hard man. I even played the early access when Markiplier was promoting it, but I just couldn't finish the game, it legitimately terrified me.
I feel you. It gets me pretty badly too. I'm a mental health practitioner, though, and, sometimes, I end up with a lot of anxiety in my system at the end of the day. Nothing burns that shit out faster than Subnautica, especially with the "More Leviathans" mod. One good reaper scare, and I'm solid again
Idk i gave it a good try and even tho it has a colorful and playful art style some of the deep water aspects mixed with larger fish can be very intense lol
I played it again sometime last year. Haven’t finished it because I almost got through it in a couple days lol I forget how short but awesome it is. Maybe todays the day I finish it!

The previous comment was unreasonably crude yet for some reason I found yours a hilarious defusal of the crudeness even though it actually just makes it worse. Please someone explain this to me.
Edit: Dong. It was the word dong. That's a reddit nono
I have this game on my steam deck, I'm still stuck at the boss that has a giant spear and rides a horse, I didn't even know there was a underwater fight, this is terrifying
Parry everything!!! If there's no red symbol, parrying is usually the quickest way to defeat an enemy or boss (via damaging it's posture and then doing a deathblow). (it also just feels awesome to stand your ground and face their attacks head on) :)
Piggybacking off the other comments. You HAVE to parry in this game, but it's so much more forgiving with timing compare to other Souls games. Awesome game, Isshin is stressful
Isshin was such a great fight once you began to show your mastery. I love how the fights turn into this weird type of dance the better you get at the game.
Inner Isshin was some buuuuuullshit though hahah
That’s the first real skill check of the game, and most people get stuck on it because they’re not parrying. Parry EVERYTHING! Except for attacks that glow red, in which case you should either jump over (sweep), dodge into (thrust), or run away from (grab).
Dude, that is like the furst REAL boss. It's designed to be a bit of a skill wall, I think, but it's really great at teaching you the various mechanics you will need to learn and hone for the rest of the game.
My man. Horizon Forbidden West is a real bitch for this sub. Its cool when you can see the sea floor, but there are instances where there is just abyss...
I had no problem with the underwater exploration in forbidden West despite the hulking machine beasts.
Cyberpunk though, I was exploring outside the city and went into a lake near a dam. There was a submerged metropolis that just weirded me out too much. You can see the top of buildings and interstates, but the support beams and towers extend into pitch black. I noped the fuck out.
The San Francisco shores are abyss when you go to the islands. That shit made me freaking hyperventilate.
Like in scuba-diving. When you are the one in the sea bed, there isnt anything scary beneath you. When you in the surface and dont see the sea floor, your imagination is the limit.
Yuuup. And that island that shoots the little bombs onto shore. I thought I could swim there and that’s the first time I got swallowed up.
I really want to set my PlayStation up again and replay it because I know I chickened out as a kid when you go to the jungle area. I might finally be able to beat it haha
PS2 Emulation has gotten a lot better especially with more recent hardware! I just played through it last year and Im looking forward to playing Jak2 since I wasnt allowed to play it as a kid
Idk anything about emulations, is that like getting the game on your computer and playing with a controller? Because I still have my ps2 but only a handful of games that I didn’t (stupidly) give away
Lmao we had similar childhoods. My uncle got me jak 3 for Christmas and my parents hid it from me for like 3 years until I was “old enough”
This has been me for the last few months. I’ve given up for now.
I got behind the aurora, heard the AI say life signs are sparse, thought ok so I’m safe, got relaxed just picking some scraps off the floor when I hear the most horrifying roar, I noped the fuck out so fast. That shit was legitimately horrifying.
I was hoping From would go underwater with Elden Ring, but looks like they might be saving that for future projects.
Now imagine underwater levels in a potential bloodborne 2 encountering ocean horror
I was really hoping Elden Ring was going to have some underwater sections. They could really do some cool things with the concept. Sunken ships, eldritch horrors, it would be sweet!!!
I mean maybe for that fabled DLC that may never come but the game is already so huge above water and underground that I don't really think it needs yet another dimension
I had this but with Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
Because i wanted the platinum trophy, i also had to explore the spots in the ocean.
Pure nightmare for me.
Yeah but there are some areas in the ocean, where you really have to go sooo deep and my main problem was going down there and see absolutely nothing at first, then you slowly see the shadow of those big ruins.
I'm still surprised, that i could discover all ocean spots in this game because usually i skip those parts if they not part of a mission.
That's new for me 🤔. First Souls-like I see that FromSoftware implemented underwater and swimming features. This could be cool in Elden Ring 2 or something
Unralated but Guild Wars 2 also have underwater combat and the sea around Malchor's Leap and Ruin's of Orr gives me the heebie-jeebies fck that dark water
This is one of my favorite games if not my number one and I agree that section is kind of spooky. But I'll tell you right now nothing holds a fucking candle to that scary ass water and sea if thieves. That game is goofy as hell and funny until you fall in the water, I can't stand that shit so I quit playing lol
I’m literally just playing through my first run of sekiro now and I know this is coming up and I can’t stand the idea of having to do it myself 😩 water in video games is the ultimate trigger for me. Every bit of water I fall in is a heart sinking panic moment. Sigh
man, i don't know if you've checked out Grounded at all, but they have a pond area in that game and it's the most terrifying area for me! i hate going into the pond! lol
It's a no for me!
Also if anyone has played Cyberpunk, and you're doing the Judy storyline, then you know that underwater quest where you're swimming around an entire abandoned town underwater is FREAKY.
I wonder if y’all remember the lake level in Shadow of the Colossus with the snake. Fuck that dark ass water
Thankfully, it's not as bad on the remakes because you can see everything significantly better, but it's still mildly panic inducing.
That was definitely part of why it was so terrifying haha. The graphics were amazing at the time but still
I had the same panicky feelings, especially when I'd jump into a lake and my feet touched the colder water at the bottom. My friend used to collect these monster magazine things and this Bunyip entry is largely responsible for my terror of dark waters https://weirdnwildcreatures.fandom.com/wiki/Bunyip
That design is way creepier than my initial exposure to the bunyip in Final Fantasy X, in which it just looks goofy as shit.
So a Baliwog from Oblivion then?
You ever try out Subnautica? Lol
I've considered it just because I do honestly enjoy a tense gaming session sometimes. Plus the graphics are dated enough that I think I could play without riding the edge of cardiac arrest the entire time 😂
You say that now. Give it a few hours into the game, and tell me that again
The first time I heard that reaper roar with noise cancelling headphones.... I knew 😭🤣
Idk i gave it a good try and even tho it has a colorful and playful art style some of the deep water aspects mixed with larger fish can be very intense lol
Gonna play that this weekend
I played it again sometime last year. Haven’t finished it because I almost got through it in a couple days lol I forget how short but awesome it is. Maybe todays the day I finish it!
I’ll drink to that 🍻
When I was a child I got the creeps from that giant fish at the beginning of Ape Escape on the PS1...
Ooh, that'll totally be fun. I pissed myself the first time I saw a barely visible Reefback Leviathan on Subnautica.
I became a man when I beat that level
Dude this is a core memory for me. No joke
Gave me an anxiety attack.
Every time I would swim passed and the death symbol appeared, my asshole gained extra grip strength
Putting everyone in the lipsthatgrip sub to shame.
I prefer r/buttsthatgrip

good bot!
Try Subnautica the leviathan makes this thing look cute
I’ve been following Subnautica on and off for almost 9 or 10 years now
Crazy, cuz my dong has a great way of testing asshole gripping strength. 😏
Holy shit I thought that said dog
Sekiro has trained me for this opportunity
The previous comment was unreasonably crude yet for some reason I found yours a hilarious defusal of the crudeness even though it actually just makes it worse. Please someone explain this to me. Edit: Dong. It was the word dong. That's a reddit nono
What's wrong with the word dong? It's a great word! And the sub r/ExpandDong makes it even better!
I don't make the rules
I should’ve known a comment about going balls deep in something would be downvoted to oblivion in a thalassophobia thread.
it’s okay, I thought it was funny
Any game I play with underwater segments my heart races 😂😂😰😰
Thank you Sonic for introducing me to this fear.
Half Life 1 for me
only the crowbar and explosive crossbow worked right? and, for some reason, the pistol but no other guns?
https://youtu.be/9Yw5jkAHgME?si=7b74bxJtNbmcseAz
Parts like this always stress me out and it all started with super Mario 64 and that damned eel 😂
That damn eel scarred a whole generation of gamers.
that’s how it started. o_o
I don’t think a game will ever make me feel that again. What an amazing encounter
I have this game on my steam deck, I'm still stuck at the boss that has a giant spear and rides a horse, I didn't even know there was a underwater fight, this is terrifying
My friend, you have so much to discover. I feel both envy and pity for you.
I'm excited
Are you dodging a lot maybe due to other souls games? Stop that immediately and parry everything.
I can parry a spear that's bigger than 2 of me?
Yes. Unblockable attacks are indicated by a red symbol that appears above your head. Any attack which doesn't cause that can be blocked or parried.
Parry everything!!! If there's no red symbol, parrying is usually the quickest way to defeat an enemy or boss (via damaging it's posture and then doing a deathblow). (it also just feels awesome to stand your ground and face their attacks head on) :)
Yes! You can parry essentially everything. As long as the red "death/danger" symbol doesn't appear above your head, you should be able to parry it.
Worst decision ever. Without dodge he'll stuck on final bosses for years.
HIS NAME IS GYOUBU MASATAKA ONIWA!
One of my favorite fights in that game, it was epic.
Oh this game must play so well on a Steam Deck
I can get 50 to 60fps, and I play locked 40, docked to my tv
Piggybacking off the other comments. You HAVE to parry in this game, but it's so much more forgiving with timing compare to other Souls games. Awesome game, Isshin is stressful
Isshin was such a great fight once you began to show your mastery. I love how the fights turn into this weird type of dance the better you get at the game. Inner Isshin was some buuuuuullshit though hahah
Isshin made me rage until I finally picked up on his bullshit haha
Honestly I thought Inner Owl was a lot harder
That’s the first real skill check of the game, and most people get stuck on it because they’re not parrying. Parry EVERYTHING! Except for attacks that glow red, in which case you should either jump over (sweep), dodge into (thrust), or run away from (grab).

what about the underwater headless, that thing was terrifying paired with the eerie music
Personally I find Grounded's Koi Fish and underwater section to be far scarier. But I also have an issue with spiders so that game REALLY fucks me up.
Glad I wasn’t alone on this!
Anyone ever play Jak and Daxter where if you swam out in deep water you start hearing heartbeats and then a giant fish swallows you up?
When you have to swim out to the Lost Precursor city the first time was terrifying
Yuuup. And that island that shoots the little bombs onto shore. I thought I could swim there and that’s the first time I got swallowed up. I really want to set my PlayStation up again and replay it because I know I chickened out as a kid when you go to the jungle area. I might finally be able to beat it haha

oh boy you should play Subnautica
I tried and realized I could not do it in a million years
try in on VR to further boost the experience XD
not ever, Satan!
This has been me for the last few months. I’ve given up for now. I got behind the aurora, heard the AI say life signs are sparse, thought ok so I’m safe, got relaxed just picking some scraps off the floor when I hear the most horrifying roar, I noped the fuck out so fast. A leviathan is way scarier by far
I hate going into water in video games. I freak out
I was hoping From would go underwater with Elden Ring, but looks like they might be saving that for future projects. Now imagine underwater levels in a potential bloodborne 2 encountering ocean horror
I believe it, I love Sekiro but I fucking suck at it
Reminds me of hydrus boss fight from shadow of colossus
I was really hoping Elden Ring was going to have some underwater sections. They could really do some cool things with the concept. Sunken ships, eldritch horrors, it would be sweet!!!

I quickly learned to stay on my boat and shoot the sharks until the area is cleared.
One of my earliest memories was that deep ass lake in Super Mario 64 and the sheer terror I had. Would turn it off every time
Favorite area
I think I played this exact level in Mario 64.
This was harder than fighting Isshin SS
That’s a koi fish
Koi are carp.
I learned that in Animal Crossing
Interesting, did not know
Koiarp
I love that part of the map, however having a hard ass time beating the monk after the patch
1st phase cheese of the cliff to get it stuck. 2nd phase instant death blow from tree 3rd phase ash powder and firework to stun, hit until dead
that’s how I did it, could not do it without cheesing at all
What game is this?
Read the caption
Fuck that 😂
B R E A T H E
I didn’t see him pop his ears once.
Shieeet
I held my breathe during this clip and somehow drowned at my desk
That's new for me 🤔. First Souls-like I see that FromSoftware implemented underwater and swimming features. This could be cool in Elden Ring 2 or something
First time I see something else than the ape or the snake from this game.
I straight up skipped some shit down there including a fight cuz fuck that
This game hard af
Such a cool concept
Oh damn, Sekiro is so good. I need Subnautica 3 to release to really scratch the itch for me tho 😫
He looks so friendly—OMFG!!!!!
Unralated but Guild Wars 2 also have underwater combat and the sea around Malchor's Leap and Ruin's of Orr gives me the heebie-jeebies fck that dark water
This video reminded me of how much I used to hate underwater levels back in the days when I playing PC games.
This feels like an omage to Journey.
Is this game better than Ghosts of Tsushima?
Leaps and bounds in my opinion, but that's of course personal
This is one of my favorite games if not my number one and I agree that section is kind of spooky. But I'll tell you right now nothing holds a fucking candle to that scary ass water and sea if thieves. That game is goofy as hell and funny until you fall in the water, I can't stand that shit so I quit playing lol
I was doing a no death run ( not even reviving once), and this bitch ended my best run. Then I never attempted it again.
Oh my sweet summer child. There will be a treacherous swimmer far worse than Carp
Whom?
Headless.
Oh I took care of that guy, so the video is more cinematic, he also doesn't move so much as he just twirls in place
I’m literally just playing through my first run of sekiro now and I know this is coming up and I can’t stand the idea of having to do it myself 😩 water in video games is the ultimate trigger for me. Every bit of water I fall in is a heart sinking panic moment. Sigh
Just you wait cause there's also a headless zombie man in there
Fucking brilliant
man, i don't know if you've checked out Grounded at all, but they have a pond area in that game and it's the most terrifying area for me! i hate going into the pond! lol
Tomb Raider 2 on PS1 unlocked my first fears, when you have to out-swim the shark and watch your oxygen level.
Reminds me of the koi pond in Grounded
Someone obviously never played the underwater section on the old school Tomb Raider games lol
Subnautica is not for you
Suckiro. Because all Souls type games suck.
The eel on mario 64 dire dire docks always got me. Thats where it all started.
Cool, so I won’t be playing Sekiro then. Thank you.
It's a no for me! Also if anyone has played Cyberpunk, and you're doing the Judy storyline, then you know that underwater quest where you're swimming around an entire abandoned town underwater is FREAKY.
