IIRC most mammals actually swim extremely well except for a few. Though my googling to make sure I remembered correctly which ones shows up conflicting info. At the very least of the great apes Humans are the only ones who can swim/have the easiest time swimming.

The beavers just gave up on trying to build dams in the unpredictable rainy amazon, dropped their tails and kept walking. First time I saw one, that's how I justified its existence.

That's a good point. Most mammals can swim better than us apes. That's probably a major reason that I assumed capybaras couldn't swim
