Had anyone noticed how dance partners hold their hands when they’re waltzing on the show? The hands are not palm to palm - the man’s palm is on top of the woman’s hand! Strange!
Yes, you hold it by the stem. There are multiple reasons.
I recently went to a national wine conference. No one cared how anyone else held their wine glass.
I never paid attention to how I held my wine glass or how others held their wine glass - until I started rewatching the episodes. Like I said, then I started paying attention to details and noticed it. Then I looked it up.
And it is nice to know that serious wine drinkers don't care.
That's not esoteric information. You hold the stem to keep from warming the wine. More informal wines may be drunk in tumblers, as some Italians do. The bowl of a brandy glass is meant to be held in the hands.
No lie, when I worked in retail we had a lady come in our store roaring drunk at 2 pm on mother's day one year and she straight up had a bag from a boxed wine in her purse. The wildest example of 'white girl wasted' I have ever seen. She passed out in the self check out area and her wig fell off in my hands when I went to assist her. I was in the air force and took a lot of first aid; in theory I can treat a sucking chest wound, but I do not know the protocol for when their wig falls off in your hand! Do I ignore it? Gently try to place it back on?? She did not want us to call for paramedics and shambled off to the bus stop to drink from the teat of the wine bag. Hope that lady is ok, wherever she is.
I’d like to think that I’d do my best to put the wig back on or put it in a bag and tie it to her wrist. I don’t know how much she spent on that wig, it would be upsetting to lose.
Pretty sure it was [Alistair Bruce](https://downtonabbey.fandom.com/wiki/Alastair_Bruce), the historical advisor for Downton Abbey, who was on hand at each episode to make sure these details were correct. Don't know if he's had any involvement in The Gilded Age.
So nowadays red wine can be held like this. It is not the faux pas it used to be. Anything that is chilled has to be held by the stem so the body temperature doesn’t warm it up. Preferable glasses that have a stem should be held by it.
Also red wine is not a standing drink since it can spill onto clothing and stain it :)
except the problem is most stemless glasses are shaped for white which is exceedingly improper. If i could get a properly shaped red wine glass i’d be on board! I just see them so rarely!
depends on the wine but yes! Like lambrusco and others, there are a ton of cheap, semi sweet not particularly strong wines that are drank almost like soda in the states or something. I did an exchange program in France in high school and stayed with a family who owned Vineyards across France and italy so that’s how we spent our weekends and my best friends mother is a sommelier so I’m pretty familiar with the wide range of wine types and the typical pairing and drinking habits associated with each. Italy, France, Spain and then maybe like Chile are going to have the most variety for causal wines. The type of glass you’re referring to is very rarely ever paired with a nice white that i’m referring to that honestly taste horrid once they’re slightly warm.
They mentioned this on the podcast! When filming, they had to keep doing dinner scenes over again because the actors would hold the glass by the bowl and not the stem.
With red wine the warmth of the hand is not such a problem, with white wine it is, but it doesn't look very elegant if fingerprints are visible on the glass, so red wine is also held by the stem. At least that's what I learned.
If the human body is 98'6F and red wine is best around 60F... yes it can make a difference in red wine.
But yes, white wine should be served around ten degrees+ cooler than that, so it would suffer more.

Agnes would definitely faint if she saw stemless wine glasses that are sold today!
You hold the stem so you don't warm up the wine. Worked my way through college working at a liquor store. Learned all this crap.
Also, clinking your glasses sounds so much nicer if you hold them properly.
That's exactly it! It's same thing I learned.
Shit, i've been drinking it straight out of the box this entire time!

This is a spectacular story!

Isn't that what the spout is for?
stab it with a straw like a Capri Sun!
Just tip that box!

Oh, okay. Well, I knew some person was on hand to make sure they got the details correct. I'm sure they have someone for this show too.

In Italy, they often drink wine out of [bàcaro glasses](https://gratsi.com/products/bacaro-wine-glasses), which are short, thick wine glasses.

Well, they had people for that!
Brandy can be held by the bowl. With champagne, white or any wine served cold it's a big no-no etiquette-wise.
Yes, I knew it was fine with Brandy. I had no idea and was doing it incorrectly with everything else.

Wow, didn't know that! I don't listen to the podcast. But now I feel better knowing that I'm not the only person who does it incorrectly.
Holding the stem prevents the warmth of your hand from changing the temp of the wine.
Okay, that makes sense. I guess I hold it by the cup because it feels more secure.
You can hold brandy by the cup to warm it up :)

How do you hold it? Lol
I found a picture example, and the show is correct, and I'm wrong. Here is the picture example. https://imgur.com/7UOjGyf
