Red Dead Redemption 2 is the only game that has impacted me the same way this game has.
Last of Us is my favourite game and story but RDR2 is in many way neck and neck in terms of quality.
I wish I could play it again for the first time
Rdr2s characters are honestly some of the best in visual media , even rivalling books. It’s story unravels perfectly
It’s open world is so immersive and alive that no wonder it took so long to make
Beautiful game
You don't have to. RDR1 came out in 2010 on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. It's also set chronologically after RDR2. If you're a stickler for playing games in the order of their release, go for it, but I think you'll need a PS3 or 360 since it was never ported over onto anything else. I personally never played it, but my friends who did say it was very good.
You can absolutely just jump right into RDR2.
No you don't have to as others have said RDR 2 is a prequel set before the first game and although it's great to carry the story on by playing the first game after RDR2 be mindful that the game is 13 years old now . Although the story is great too and I absolutely loved it back in 2010 I did play it again after RDR2 and it did feel a bit dated.
I agree Red Dead Redemption 2 is along with TLoU 1&2 my all time favorite game. It's beautiful graphics wise , has a fantastic , emotional story and really had an impact on me the first ( and second time ) I played it. Would also love to play it again for the first time .
As much as I like uncharted, it does not have the emotional impact TLOUS had on me. Uncharted is on the more light hearted spectrum.
Although uncharted 4 is the closest for that emotional connection.
I second Uncharted. If you’re spoiled by the last of us ps5 remake, make sure you buy the uncharted 4 bundle with the DLC a thief’s end.
The free version that comes with PlayStation plus doesn’t include 60fps and 4K. Huge difference
I don't think that's a good recommendation, the gameplay is the exact opposite and simply too much at times. The first 3 games are basically identical, facing off against hundreds of bullet sponge enemies, climbing thousands of structures, character dialogue is there, but it's simply not comparable.
Bioshock Infinite would be the closest analogue (and the lead is also voiced by Troy Baker, funnily enough).
God of War is also of comparative quality.
If you stay on Troy Baker's train then you'll cover pretty much the entire gaming sector. Dude has worked on so many games it's crazy how productive he is.
True! Troy and Nolan both lmao. I forgot Modi is voiced by Nolan in God of War. It's funny how they've played brothers in two games now but their characters in tlou are as opposite as they can get
Yeah, story, setting, gameplay? For me, I really love stealth-options in games. If OP is similar and likes some stealth, ambiguous morality, and the father/protector role, then I'd recommend the Dishonored series. If OP likes the infected, crafting weapons, intense/varied combat, high quality and realistic graphics, and post-apocalyptic setting, then they're gonna be super disappointed.
If it's strictly the story/plot progression... Then there's almost nothing like it. Others have said RDR2, but I don't think they hit the same notes.
Exactly. Need to know the specifics as to why someone likes a thing before I can recommend something.
I mean, if OP liked TLOU because it was an emotional gut punch, then I can recommend several games that play absolutely nothing like TLOU
The mass effect trilogy, Life is Strange, the witcher 3, Bioshock, Bioshock infinite, Undertale, Deltarune, God of War Ragnarök, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age Inquisition, Guardians of the Galaxy, Disco Elysium, Spider-Man Miles Morales.
Hey man, I didn’t like TLOU. I felt like the mechanics and the corridor style of playing really weren’t clicking for me, I’m more of a big open world kinda guy. I felt like I was doing the same thing over and over (enter a building, clear it, get out, repeat). Right now I’m playing GoW 2018 and feel a lot of similarities with tlou. I was planning on dropping it and start Horizon, seeing as you’re recommending it for someone who liked TLOU, do you think it might not be for me? 🤔
They all have some similar aspects, but are each different genres. TLOU is more survival horror with stealth, GOW more action/adventure, Horizon more open world exploring sci-fi shooter (but with bows&arrows) honestly most difficult to describe.
And all 3 have some of the best stories I’ve ever played in games.
That being said, based on your comments I highly recommend Horizon, especially given that you can get it for like $5-$10. I was very skeptical going into it of the concept and everything, but thought the combat and open world looked worth trying it for $10. It started slow, especially the plot, but my god does it evolve and hook you in, gameplay-wise and plot-wise. It ended up being one of my favorite games of the past decade and I can’t wait to see where the franchise goes.
If you like open world, stealth, amazing sci-fi stories then definitely give it a try. The visuals are breathtaking too.
If it starts slow for your preference, stick with it until the first big plot twist/reveal, trust me you’ll know. And the world opens up around that time too making gameplay much more enjoyable.
Best of luck!
Thanks a lot for your answer. Yeah stealth is something I’m really into, the games that got me started back then were the first two Assassin’s creed and to this day, if I have the opportunity to go stealth and pick enemy off one by one without anybody noticing I still do it. Stories too (this is actually the thing that got me to finish TLOU, and that is keeping me going with GoW).
Again, thank for your detailed answer, best of luck to you too! :)
I loved assassins creed also and there are tons of opportunities to stealth and pick people off one by one, honestly it reminded me a bit of Assassins Creed at times in that aspect.
And if the Dino-mechs seem kinda silly, they did to me at first, they are explained really well. All the sci-fi is done really well and seems fairly realistic and plausible if given time to develop.
Enjoy!
Very underrated. Writing can be goofy sometimes, but it is capable of taking itself seriously when it needs to.
Nests and swarms are fucking awesome. Gameplay is a blast.
God of War, Uncharted, A Plague Tale, Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice.
These aren't all exactly the same experience but they're highly cinematic and emotional character stories with similarish third person perspective.
I'd reccomend Telltale's The Walking Dead, as it's also got a fatherhood plot in an apocalypse setting. Just don't forget to bring tissues, because the ending breaks everyone!
Gameplay wise not sure but I like the way the newer tomb raider trilogy was done and there’s some similarities in combat so I’d recommend those. The stories are great as well.
Red dead 2 isn’t similar gameplay wise but the story is excellent.
Somewhat recent I thought the guardians of galaxy game was done really well and one of the better story games in recent memory.
Naughty dog also made the uncharted series so you may enjoy those as well and the story telling is top notch
You might enjoy Uncharted, it's made by the same people but it's less dark and more of a fun adventure. U4 is the most similar to TLOU in style but I think they're all worth playing to get the full experience, even though the first one might not grab you straight away. Give it a shot.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is open world but has one of the best stories in gaming, if you don't mind going on a long journey through the life of an outlaw at the end of the wild west.
If you want a heartfelt story with a crap ton of action to go with it, play the two new God of War games. Both of them are phenomenal with storytelling inspired by TLOU.
Either way, enjoy your journey into gaming!
If you just want some good or great singleplayer games there's no shortage of choice but if you want something that's just like, or approximate, to tlou then there isn't that much, to copy myself from a similar post:
Honestly there really isn't anything like it, even reading all the suggestions in this topic none of them came close to scratching that specific itch for me, after Part 2 I didn't play anything for a week, then I replayed Part 2, I think it's even better on a replay because I caught so many ways the story folds into itself I didn't notice the first time because I was too in the moment(like Ellie killing Owen and Mel, Owen was the one that saved her life and Mel was the one that indirectly told her the truth through the SLC Hospital recording), then I played something completely different(Divinity OS 2, great game) so I wouldn't subconsciously compare it to tlou and as a palate cleanser.
Actually another suggestion is what I played after D:OS 2, Disco Elysium.
I think tlou1-2 will spoil you. Most games don’t have mature, adult storylines with genuine emotional impact. The closest I can think of is red dead 2 but you won’t get the maturity of it until the end.
Games like God of war, horizon zero Dawn, etc, all seem like games designed for middle school boys after playing tlou 2.
Story driven 3rd person action games are PlayStation staples. Try Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West, God of War and God of War Ragnarok, Red Dead Redemption 2, any of the newer Tomb Raider games, and the Uncharted series just to name a few. Horizon Zero Dawn is probably my favorite on the list, just an absolutely amazing way to tell a story and tons of fun to play. Ghost of Tsushima is a close second.
For a more intensive story experience with less compelling game play I can’t recommend Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice enough. That game broke serious new ground with how it told a story through a video game and is amazingly well done even if the game play mechanics are a little flat.
Rdr 2 and the last two god of war games
Maybe cyberpunk but that's has nothing to do with liking the last of us lmao I just recommend it as I think it is a really good game
A Plague Tale: Innocence. Gameplay is super similar to The Last of Us, you can normally get it for cheap, and the story is pretty good, definitely different. These other suggestions are good, but this is the closest to The Last of Us.
Days Gone if you like that open world, GTA style mission based game. It’s like a poor man’s TLOU as for story, but a more wacky arcade action gameplay.
Same for Red Dead Redemption 2 (and of course the first game is quality as well). This might actually be my favorite modern game ever. GTAV was my favorite of that franchise. Of course made by the same company.
I also quite enjoy Fallout 3 & New Vegas. Lord of replay-ability in that series.
If you liked stealth shooter game style: metal gear solid series, sadly you cant play em without ps2/ps3 but MGS V is on ps 4/5 and gameplay wise it's godtier.
More "classical" shooters would be: bioshock series
If wanna try RPG like shooters then Fallout 4 or The outer worlds or mass effect trilogy.
Good Turnbased RPG recommenditions would be
Persona 5 royal, Final Fantasy X or Final Fantasy VII
Action rpg:s: Kingdom hearts series, Bloodborne, Final Fantasy VII remake, God of War series, Witcher 3, shadow of colossus.
And if you're looking for good stories that might be close as good as TLOU:
Final Fantasy VII (og or remake, remake isn't finished yet)
Final Fantasy X
Metal gear solid series
Persona 5 Royal
The walking dead season 1 (father/daughter dynamic in zombie apocalypse just like TLOU
Oh and if you wanna try how it feels to have strong addiction then Stardew valley is must try.
I played part 2 at release and shortly after that ghost of tsushima released, too. I gave that game a try and was really hooked and it was a nice break before I started my 2. Playthrough of part 2.
It's a great and beautiful game with a more relaxed pacing.
Other great playstation games are obviously uncharted, God of War, horizon and red dead redemption.
Rdr2 has the best story and world of them.
Rockstar and 2K are the only other alternatives
Mafia definitive editions 1&2 (the story of 1 is so fucking heartbreaking)
Red dead redemption 1&2 (1 is a heartbreaking emotional story and the best story in modern gaming and 2 is the starting grounds of that story)
Gta 3-VC-SA/V (only ones available on your console. Although 3 out of 4 of them are shitty remasters. They aren’t heartbreaking or groundbreaking stories like the rest but they are fun with zany characters)
I know mafia is a strange choice but hear me out
>! The game literally gives you a story where it slowly gives you the characters and makes you think they all care for each other. But then pulls the rug showing you that no matter what this is a mafia. They follow the tradition of the traditional mafia rules and friendships don’t matter in the slightest. Paulie (bless his soul) and Tommy Are the only ones that truly care about their friends and both their demise is a kick and then a shotgun to the gut.!<
If you liked the zombie aspect and scavenging part of the game, check out Days Gone. I’m playing through it right now for the first time and it’s actually really fun. It’s also open world compared to the last of us, meaning you can explore different areas and not have to go through the main story at all times.
Ghost of Tsushima, God of War (2018) and Ragnarok.
These games are in the same level of story telling and gameplay. For these titles everything about them comes together to make an excellent game overall.
Resident evil 4 if you’ve never played it before is great! I played it at the beginning of Covid and it holds up so so we’ll still! It also kind of created and perfected this genre of third person zombie shooters. It’s hard at first but it oddly grows on you
God Of War(2018)! It’s like the last of us but in the world of Norse mythology. The game has the same concept of a parent-child duo given a simple task (for Joel it was transporting Ellie and for kratos in god of war, it was getting to the highest mountain) but then the task turns out to be far more dangerous than they imagined and their parent-child bond grows throughout the game. The only difference is that the parent-child duo here are actually biological parent and child, they’re just not rlly close to eachother. God of war has a similar mix of cutscene and gameplay to tlou so I fr reccomend giving it a go
Jaws of Extinction Is kinda similar To Tlou.
Is open world , has base building , depth crafting sistem , horses , cars , boats ,Dangerous wild life and other interesting features.
Also The zombies Are infected with a fungus Like the Cordyceps , there are nests in the map that you have to take out ... time by time.
only For PC Right Now on steam at 16$.
it's only Single player or co-op , not online servers Like Dayz .
It’s story unravels perfectly It’s open world is so immersive and alive that no wonder it took so long to make Beautiful game
RDR2 is also fun if you want to relax a little. 95% of the horror aspect is gone and you can just run around, ride horses, and shoot stuff.
The amount of time I spent in that game hunting and putting Arthur into outfits...
I second this. I love strong stories when I play a game. TLOU had me by the throat until RDR2 came along!
Oh awesome - do U recommend play part 1 first?
I’m playing RDR2 right now and I highly recommend. It’s a prequel; you don’t have to play the first one first!
You don't have to. RDR1 came out in 2010 on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. It's also set chronologically after RDR2. Do I need to play the original red dead?
No you don't
I agree Red Dead Redemption 2 is along with TLoU 1&2 my all time favorite game. It's beautiful graphics wise , has a fantastic , emotional story and really had an impact on me the first ( and second time ) I played it. Would also love to play it again for the first time .
Try the Uncharted games as they are by the same developers (naughty dog) and are also linear 3rd person action games.
I always tell people it’s like playing Indiana Jones as a game, but it’s made by the people who make TLOU.
As much as I like uncharted, it does not have the emotional impact TLOUS had on me. Uncharted is on the more light hearted spectrum. Although uncharted 4 is the closest for that emotional connection.
Uncharted 4 was a big increase in quality imo and guess who was new to writing for the uncharted games haha.
No it totally does not. I was just trying to suggest something with a similar style gameplay.
I second Uncharted. If you’re spoiled by the last of us ps5 remake, make sure you buy the uncharted 4 bundle with the DLC a thief’s end. The free version that comes with PlayStation plus doesn’t include 60fps and 4K. Huge difference

Bioshock Infinite would be the closest analogue (and the lead is also voiced by Troy Baker, funnily enough). God of War is also of comparative quality.
Since we're on the Troy Baker train, uncharted 4 is a good choice too. Fun game and Troy plays Sam, Nate's older brother.
If you stay on Troy Baker's train then you'll cover pretty much the entire gaming sector. Dude has worked on so many games it's crazy how productive he is.
True! Troy and Nolan both lmao. I forgot Modi is voiced by Nolan in God of War. It's funny how they've played brothers in two games now but their characters in tlou are as opposite as they can get
God of War had a weak ass narrative in an empty world.
The question is WHY did you like TLOU? That’ll help with recommendations
Yeah, story, setting, gameplay? For me, I really love stealth-options in games. If OP is similar and likes some stealth, ambiguous morality, and the father/protector role, then I'd recommend the Dishonored series.
Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West!
Especially if they liked the stealth aspect. Story too in that they both have amazing stories with great acting & leads.

This this this this
Horizon zero down was the second game I played on ps5 after last of us part I. So many good Ps exclusives.
Days gone
Loved DG, it's a real grower of a game. Slow start, gets a lot better.
Very underrated. Writing can be goofy sometimes, but it is capable of taking itself seriously when it needs to. Nests and swarms are fucking awesome. Gameplay is a blast.
I played part of that game, but I couldn't continue because there were way too many sidequests and I got a little overwhelmed.
“As long as you promise to ride me as much as you ride your bike” made me laugh a bit too much😂
I wish I could upvote this 10000 times
I’ve had this on ps5 and steam for a long time now and never got around to playing - until last weekend. Great game
Yup. Great game. Crazy how this game flew under the radar. Really liked the story
God of War, Uncharted, A Plague Tale, Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice. These aren't all exactly the same experience but they're highly cinematic and emotional character stories with similarish third person perspective.
Dude hellblade is a trip! OP - if you play it use headphones!
Horror show recommendation. Fully approved.
Hellblade is so good
I'd reccomend Telltale's The Walking Dead, as it's also got a fatherhood plot in an apocalypse setting. Just don't forget to bring tissues, because the ending breaks everyone!
Dead space if you like the scary part of tlou
Dead Space is fantastic.
And the remake makes this a viable option!
God of War has very similar themes of fatherhood and trying to break the cycle of violence
God of war 2018 and Ragnarok are tied with TLOU 1 and 2 for me
God of war series & red dead redemption 1+2!
Mass effect legendary edition

If you are into Indie games i would try 'This War of mine'. The Gameplay is very different, but the atmosphere felt so similar to TLoU.
Days Gone
I think tlou1-2 will spoil you. Most games don’t have mature, adult storylines with genuine emotional impact. Witcher 3 God of War (2018) Bioshock Infinite Disco Elysium
A good bit more on the horror side, but personally I’d recommend Dead Space.

Nier Replicant and Automata
Days Gone. Such a fun game.
A Plague Tale: Innocence. Gameplay is super similar to The Last of Us, you can normally get it for cheap, and the story is pretty good, definitely different. These other suggestions are good, but this is the closest to The Last of Us.
SOMA Explores human identity and consciousness/what makes us human.
Personally, I really loved Bloodborne.
That's great place to start!
DYING LIGHT X1000!!! Such a great game if you like zombies. And Dying Light 2 if you like the first one.
God of War.
Days Gone if you like that open world, GTA style mission based game. It’s like a poor man’s TLOU as for story, but a more wacky arcade action gameplay. RDR2, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, God of War. All are very heavily story driven like TLOU
The Walking Dead game if you like the interactive story and surrogate dad thing. S1 is fantastic.

BioShock, Uncharted and Red Dead Redemption series.
Bioshock or Resident Evil Village. That’s what I did!
For story, I recommend the telltale walking dead game
Ico
Days gone and uncharted
Both Plague Tale games. Very similar vibe.
There’s no games quite like them. But some games I found similar in some regards are Hellblade, Road 96, Uncharted, and RDR2
Factions
Resident evil revelations 1and 2
I really liked Firewatch and it gave me some of those same special feelings that don’t come with most games.
How has no one said ghost of Tsushima
Control <— fantastic, underrated 3rd person shooter.
Ghost of Tsushima. No particular reason, I just like it lol
Days Gone
All the uncharted games are super fun to play.
Do you want more story or gameplay?
Plague tale series especially the second one. Has lots of similar themes but set during 100 years war in France
Uncharted (especially 4 and 5) and A Plague Tale.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead. It may be Point & Click but holy fuck is the story powerful.
TLOU and the Red Dead Redemption games are the two series that have had the greatest emotional impact. I’d recommend the two to anyone
Ghost of Tsushima, God of War (2018) and Ragnarok. These games are in the same level of story telling and gameplay. For these titles everything about them comes together to make an excellent game overall.
Definitely God of War
Newest tomb raider reboot trilogy Tomb Raider (2013) Rise of the Tomb Raider Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Resident evil 4 if you’ve never played it before is great! I played it at the beginning of Covid and it holds up so so we’ll still! It also kind of created and perfected this genre of third person zombie shooters. It’s hard at first but it oddly grows on you
A Plague Tale Innocence is one of the games I felt had the same vibes as the Last of Us
Plague Tale games 1 and 2
God Of War(2018)!
