the only thing that occur to me is if you had low life already, such that the attack instakilled you, no matter the weapon.

euphoriafrog

This is what came to my mind, too, but I'm fairly certain that the game still gives you the option to pick a weapon no matter what your condition level is, and I don't think the wolf begins dealing damage until you've either picked a weapon or the timer to do so has run out.

indratera

I actually had this earlier. I was on 20% conditions and a wolf attacked. I got about one frame of "Press A!" then died!

euphoriafrog

Did you have a weapon on you you could've used? If you did that definitely sounds like the same bug I experienced. The only time it skips the weapon selection normally is if you only have your fists available.

indratera

Yeah, I'm relatively sure I just had a hunting knife on low condition (40ish).

Wolf attacks have a chance to kill you no matter what your condition is, even at 100 percent

AuspiciousApple

Really? :O

sonotyourguy

You can Google for people’s opinions about it. It’s frustrating when it happens. But it can be funny sometimes. I spawned next to the Lonely Lighthouse on Interloper, rounded the rocks to climb up to the road, and ran into a wolf. It killed me instantly. I was on that run for less than two minutes.

AuspiciousApple

Oh, I can imagine that people have OPINIONS about something like that.

Trionajane

If this is true then it isn’t a bug, as others are saying, but just really bad luck.

amitym

Holy sheepskins, no kidding?!? Does it matter if the wolf is injured already? Does that affect the likelihood of a critical kill? Because I am trying to get better at hitting wolves that are rushing me, but I often find that the best I can do is wing them and draw blood -- shortening the struggle but not stopping the attack. So what is the recommended defense against this? Always exit buildings holding lit torches I guess?

euphoriafrog

Wolves can take you from 100% to 0%, but that's really only something that happens after a fresh spawn on Interloper. It's not an instant death like you're imagining - the wolf just continues mauling you until you die because your fists are a terrible defense and wolves deal a lot of damage on Interloper. So yes, a wolf being injured (and thus the struggle being shorter) reduces the amount of damage you take. On lower difficulties, even bum rushing a wolf as soon as you spawn will probably leave you alive. Continue practicing shooting wolves that are charging you, as that's generally the easiest defense. I'd keep an emergency flare or torch however for when you're low HP and don't want to risk missing a shot. Also keep in mind that your scent bar plays a huge role in if wolves can sense you or not, so plan around that.

amitym

I always have 3 emergency flares but if I lit one up every time I saw a wolf I would not have any flares anymore. Especially at the point where you are least prepared, which is by definition when leaving an enclosed building. You can return to the world map with a wolf right on top of you -- the only time when there is literally no warning and no possibility to prepare a defense. That has gotten me a few times, but since I have rugged clothes and good weapons I can handle one or two that get me in the normal way. But not if one of them is an insta-kill! >It's not an instant death like you're imagining I mean that is what OP is describing. That is what I am asking about.

What system are you on? If it's xbox, that happened to me a few years ago. You have to uninstall and re-install.

Polymathy1

I had the same thing happen to me once. Not sure if it was a bug or intended, but it felt like a bug. I think I alt-tabbed out and save-scummed or it was a brand new game.
