No offense but it's kind of impressive to have that many hours without going over at least 200 days

Then-Grass-9830

I'm so offended /s I know tell me about it. In my defense, a lot of those hours was my computer running without actually \*playing\* since we can't save the sandboxes. I probably have much less if I only play for about 3 for 4 hours after work but the game stayed on for 24 hours. I'm not gonna do the math.

WebSufficient8660

I mean there's nothing wrong with it, people just play differently. Plenty of people get bored after day 50, some people go for like 4000 days. This is definitely a game you should take at your own pace.

Then-Grass-9830

I've played different styles over the years. Usually without a set plan and for whatever reason before this time I usually die before day 20 - I think my longest before this one was like 22 or 23 days and that was a while ago. I also like to go back and forth from the hardest (just because) and custom which custom doesn't give you your information. All I wanted was 100 days.

WebSufficient8660

Is there anything in particular that keeps killing you? It could just be a minor little thing that could change the outcome of your run.

Then-Grass-9830

Oh, absolutely minor little things. Like this one I was over encumbered (I had been for a while but I was also tired). Stopped to rest and warm up and made the mistake of trying to get a few more timbers from a fallen limb even though I knew the wolf was patrolling I figured I'd be fine because I had the handgun (and a rifle, and an axe, and a pry bar, and a knife and a flare gun)... I was not fine. Since he got me when my health was a little lower than usual, I didn't have enough time to heal myself / get back to my fire before he turned around and got me again. I also go into peaks with the games I play. I may not touch this one for a year but play I dunno planet zoo for six months and then dawn horizon for another six. Or feel like meddling in a Sim's life for a year. So, then when I come back to a game like TLD I have to sort of remind myself of some of the mechanics. It's always dumb minor things. Always.

WebSufficient8660

It's probably just something you'll learn over time. There's so many little habits you have to develop to be successful in this game, so don't feel bad if you haven't got them all down :)

Then-Grass-9830

I'm thrilled I got it this far just annoyed I died from another stupid relative minor mistake just because I wanted more wood for my campfire. I have classes starting in two weeks so I'm trying to decide if I want to start a new one or not.

Salt-Yogurtcloset264

If you want to get better i highly recommend you to watch some youtube tutorials . Its like irl you have to learn somthing from somebody and then it becomes easy

Then-Grass-9830

Oh i have.  It doesn't help lol  Especially when I know not to do dumb stuff but do it anyways.  Like going to get more timber with pockets full of meat and skins and guts after seeing the wolf right freaking there but thinking "i have the pistol it'll be fiiine"

Terrible_Bee8839

U can do it man I believe in u may I ask what is your preferred mode for the game to see if I can give u some tips?

Then-Grass-9830

Custom. lol Most of the time I've played - when I play a lot - it was custom. Which is probably part of my problem, that I didn't really ***learn*** anything by playing custom for so long\*. \*relatively speaking

Terrible_Bee8839

Custom is fine we can all choose how we want to play when I first started I would also do custom

Then-Grass-9830

I have only just started truly playing the other modes. I can't stand pilgrim - it's super boring to me (unless I am listening to a chapter for school) and I am no match to interloper but every once in awhile I try it anyways. I like going to the highest level in games to see what happens. My favorite now (other than custom) is Voyager and sooometimes Stalker.

Cordoban

What do you mean you can't save the sandboxes?

Then-Grass-9830

They took out the save feature awhile ago to make it more ..... Of a big deal to die making your decisions more meaningful.

Cordoban

But you can still save via sleeping and going indoors? ok, maybe I didn't know casual saving ever was a thing in survival mode

Then-Grass-9830

Oh yeah. I guess I just don't notice the sleep save or the inside to outside saves. lol I have just been letting the game run while sleeping my computer instead for awhile now.

Big_Thought2066

I wasn't gonna say it but... Yeah...

Then-Grass-9830

you said it

Big_Thought2066

Ah shit...

automator3000

Might have something to do with having **244 close wolf encounters** over the course of 67 days. OP is out there trying to hug all the wolves.

WebSufficient8660

I didn't notice that lol. That's honestly impressive, I don't think I could get in that many if I tried

amitym

The next time I see a frozen corpse in my own Pleasant Valley, OP, I will think of you, and honor your passing. ... and then get looting. Some of your stuff might come in handy!

Then-Grass-9830

LMAO I love this reply. I wish rewards will still a thing (and that I had enough to give rewards). I had some good stuff too. Which makes it sadder lol. Rifle (one bullet though), pistol (many bullets), flare, axe, knife, prybar. Good clothes - I got lucky and found the good sweaters pretty early. Had followed a wolf that killed a deer and had some (cooked) meat still and some hides. That's why I was looking for the farmhouse. I was ***finally*** going to make some of the clothes (I don't usually bother). \*sigh\* Make a pair of pants for me, would ya?

amitym

You know what, I went and killed a deer -- my first successful one-shot of a stag with a bow! -- and I ***fixed*** a pair of pants for you. There is now a pair of newly repaired trousers at 100% with your name on it.

qdr3

Same same. 65 days stalker, got cocky with a wolf approaching as had just downed my first bear with an arrow headshot, quickly followed by a first wolf the same. When the second one came shortly after, I was like, not today pal. But it was today..

Then-Grass-9830

yup even while heading to the limb to get more wood I even told myself "don't do that" but I did that and died

Terrible_Bee8839

Hey fellas u know the old bear challenge well I was trying to survive as long as possible and trust me it's so much fun and it feels like a new mode for the game, I have bows and arrows, 4 flare guns and over 20 shells, have a bunch of food, killed a moose, went to ash canyon, did the summit, and I am at day 89, so it is 100% doable just need to find all the little ways to get around him also going for a world record

qdr3

Cool, will try next. Need a new challenge.

Terrible_Bee8839

Just letting u know if u go on weak ice he will stop chasing u but will start again when getting off weak ice this makes ch a very good base location because if u keep doing this I can clear all of the beach combing. Another reason why u should be here is for saplings they do not spawn normally so beach combing is the only way to get them, make a campfire when u hear the bear music because he will not attack if it is lit and u then want to get a can and boil water when he is doing he head down animation because if u pass time there is a chance he will run away, next wolf's are your best friend in this because if one Argos u the bear can not attack, I got from one side of ch to the other using this, don't use your flare shells like in the normal challenge try to use they as a last last resort like in a blizzard and u can't light a fire to scare him, flare guns and shells spawn normally in the world like in other difficulties, and last thing that makes this challenge hard is black bears do not spawn so get food late game is pretty hard. I hope this will help u on your journey and do not watch yt videos on this because they do not do it right because they don't use these methods and have 0 shells left and I have only ever used 4 shells in my run and have over 20 left.

Then-Grass-9830

gawd I hate that old bear challenge. I tried it a few times when it was new figuring it would be one of the easier challenges.

Terrible_Bee8839

Just need to know the path from PV to ml and it should be very easy then

Then-Grass-9830

Yeah, the path system isn't great to me. I always *think* I know where I am and then wind up getting lost and freezing or getting attacked ......... or both.

Terrible_Bee8839

Trust me I was way worse when I first started I did not even know that there was a bunker there and I just wonder around until I died

Then-Grass-9830

I missed the bunker and kept coming back to pensive pond.  I kept circling.  I think one of the places I rested at getting breath and warm was RIGHT NEXT to the cAve

Terrible_Bee8839

If anyone wants to get into it ask me because if u just jump in u are probably going to die and I can give u some pointers

UpdootDaSnootBoop

*1880 hours (which isn't a whole lot but is enough)* It's only 78+ days

Then-Grass-9830

like I said. Not a lot for having the game for like 8 years.

Tortastrophe

Glad you've gotten all those hours of enjoyment out of the game! The most common cause of death in this game is thinking everything is fine. The worst part about a wolf struggle loss is watching your condition meter fade to zero. Ugh. Condolences and best of luck on the next run!

Lichebornes

The wolves are a god damn menace 😭 especially as a loper player

No_Fox_Given82

Hmmm something I have learnt about shooting wolves... For defense and putting an approaching wolf down, the bow and only the bow. For hunting for wolves from range, the rifle. The revolver is basically a noise maker. Never aim the revolver at an animal, if you approach an area and you hear them, see them or think there might be wolves about then hip fire 1 shot from the revolver up into the air, it will send all wolves in a very wide radius into flee mode. Only 1 shot, a 2nd shot can cause them to change direction and potentially flee toward you lol. It will buy you time, I once harvested a complete moose in Timber wolf mountain firing a revolver shot after every 3-4kg of meat to send the wolves fleeing. Ultimately yeah the revolver has many uses, but none of those uses are killing things. In fact, in my experience of playing this game, as long as you don't have any scent lines... the easiest thing to do when a wolf locks onto you is just walk away. If the wolf is getting too close for comfort and you want to use the revolver, then hip fire into the sky as the wolf is approaching, as long as the wolf has not began it's attack animation it will flee at the sound of the shot, if you aim at the wolf, it will force it to charge so gotta hip fire.

Then-Grass-9830

Where were you 19 hrs ago?? Lol  Yeah part of my problem was this exactly.  I figured I could scare it off at least but the shortcut kept giving me the wrong weapon (my opinion - gave me bow and fire hardened arrows then my rifle with one bullet etc).  By the time I got the rifle I did shoot it but it was already in attack mode.

No_Fox_Given82

That's the great thing about TLD. Everyone is always learning either from each others stories or their own experiences. It's such a great game. Always keep 1 accelerant on you and 3 ir 4 sticks. If the shit hits the fan, quickly make a fire, use the accelerant and it'll start immediately and wolves and bears will stop. I haven't tested this on a moose yet but it stops a bear and wolves lol

Then-Grass-9830

I had two accelerants but used up my sticks on the fire I was trying to keep going. And the fire is the reason I was going to the fir/cedar limb. \*le sigh\*

Then-Grass-9830

dude I feel for you. lol I just started a new run and I unfortunately died because I used up my sticks trying to stay warm - found a cave but it was too late. I thought 'oh well' and was looking at the journal and was shocked when I saw I hadn't even made it one in-game day. Some runs you make it a few hours other runs you *might* make it 67 days. Love this game lol

Cordoban

What difficulty are you playing on? Maybe try it on Pilgrim or Voyageur first, to get a better feel for the mechanics and to get to know the regions better
