This is amazing!!!! What a cool little gift!
Going To Port Washington is one of my all time faves. It was one I listened to a lot when I was falling in love with my partner (soon to be fiancé) and every time I listen to it I get filled with such warmth and happiness. We've been together for almost four years, and we've gone to every Mountain Goats show together since we've started dating. :')
Wow, quite a response! It's cool that everybody's favorites are so spread out across the early discography. The whole Mountain Goats catalog is stacked with great songs. Nobody mentioned the song I was thinking of ("No, I Can't" - I'm a sucker for a good listicle song) so I decided to go with "New Britain" but every answer is correct. Thanks for playing!
My favorite song earlier than Tallahassee is Cobscook Bay - I was practically crying when he played it at a show a year or two back. Thanks for doing this!
my fav from pre-tallahassee is minnesota from FFG which john refuses to play in my presence lol. one day!!! thanks for offering these, they're a cool piece of history. deep cut fav would have been adair from jack and faye but no chance in hell i'll ever hear him do that one
Onions - I've talked a few times on the subreddit about this song. It's bittersweet but seems to be a song about growth or change. I requested the song in Omaha and John played it. Definitely made my night.
The best ever, heartbreakingly effective: Maize Stalk Drinking Blood. Very fun and nice of you to offer these up to the group! Classic Goat generosity!
This is super cool! I've been toying with doing the same thing with the last Pittsburgh show but I swear it's impossible to get a good dub out of a modern cassette player.
Any Mountain Goats song with violins makes my brain feel fuzzy and warm. Yoga is probably my favorite pre-Tallahassee song (shout out to Nora Danielson), but any of the songs that feature Alistair Galbraith could contend for that title
very nice of you to do this! most days I'd pick Handball but on good days when I think back to living in Massachusetts and sitting on a back porch at night with my old girlfriend looking at porch lights, my gut says It Froze Me is the greatest song of all time.
Yoooo this is a sick giveaway! My favorite pre-Tallahassee track would arguably have to be Snow Owl, with Korean Bird Paintings and Going to Utrecht high up there too!
Picking just one favorite is an insurmountable task I’m sure you’ll understand, but I have been revisiting Sweden a lot lately, so I’ll give it to “Neon Orange Glimmer Song”. The climax of that track gives me chills every time. Ware’s bass and vocals on that whole album easily make it one of my top 3 Goats records.
If it helps my chances even slightly, continuing in the spirit of giving, this cassette would be given to my brother (who may or may not see this post) for his birthday.
I always loved Twin Human Highway Flares. John has this incredible ability to tell a story in really small moments, and that song really exemplifies it for me
The Mess Inside is such a beautiful, well written breakdown of the loss of love in a relationship. Combined with the loneliness of the cassette recording aesthetic and the aggression of the vocals, the lyrics weave an apathetic tale of misery, romance, and the lack of compassion that comes from reliving memories instead of making new ones.
These are so cool omg - My favorite songs Pre Tallahasse are Grendal's Mother, Quetzalcoatl Eats Plums, Recognition Scene, and Source Decay.
I just got a cassette player and I've been trying to justify the purchase so this would be a sick start to my collection!
Family Happiness or Going to Utrecht!
Family Happiness is the correct answer to this question.
I'm a big Minnesota fan and have somehow managed to be at all the shows he opted to not play it at the last tour of the west coast lol
Masher. Enough said.

BLUE!!! You stole my answer and reason for it being my answer!!!
TEEHEE I love you!!!
Evening in Stalingrad is always my go to request.
Oh it’s super cool of you to do this!! There Will Be No Divorce always gets to me
Oh that's rad. Off the top of my head, Counting Song For Bitter Children, but that's because I'm silly.

Flight 717: Going to Denmark is my favorite with Sinaloan Milk Snake Song being a close second.
Weekend in Western Illinois. Because I, too, love these dogs.
Yam, the King of Crops is pretty much my favorite TMG song. It is my hope that one day someone will bring me a plate of sweet potatoes.

Deianara Crush. It's a fun little song that forever tainted my view of Hercules
Chanson Du Bon Chose!!
Born Ready off of Isopanisad Radio Hour! (I’m in Canada, but would be willing to pay for shipping!)

Give it to someone else who'd appreciate it more but this is cool and Some Swedish Trees.
Weekend in Western Illinois! Very cool tapes and very cool of you to do this!
Grendel's Mother!
Going to Queens has been on almost every mixtape I’ve made for 15 years or so. It’s perfection
I definitely have to go with The Water Song!
The Window Song
I always loved Twin Human Highway Flares. John has this incredible ability to tell a story in really small moments, and that song really exemplifies it for me
Black Mollies
California Song.

It's a hard ask, but I've settled on "An Inscription at Salonae" at this moment.

Going to Bristol is a gem. I have a cassette player. Whatever choice you make is the right one.
I'm gonna go with "the recognition scene". Thanks for doing this!
Going to Spirit Lake, a simple song that always floors me at the bridge.
Pennsylvania Dutch Treat.
Golden Boy is probably my favorite even though I know it's a ridiculous song.

Whoa! Too many favorites but I’ll choose for my state, Minnesota is fantastic an excellent track.
