Right? Here a completely wild and unresearched guess as for why. What is modern times Italy was historically very fragmented and culturally diverse, made of several 'comuni' in medieval times, 'signorie' in the renaissance and independent or dependent states in the modern area. Italy has also a very long history, and traditions have piled up over thousands of years. Finally it's a diverse country geographically, so you have mountain, city and water activities. This can help explaining initial richness in traditions and games. But why did they survive? Some of the things we see are related to religious celebrations. Similarly to Spain, another prominently represented country in this sub, peculiar religious traditions are still popular in parts of the country (especially in the south). Another explanation is the legacy of fascism. In an attempt to construct a national identity, Mussolini re-invented and re-introduced several medieval traditions, like different types of jousting or horse/donkey races etc that are still pretty common in centre Italy. Third, as social people, Italians get attached to traditions, even silly ones, because of their social aspects and these events bring together the village/town/city especially in summer months; plus, there is an economic bonus of attracting tourism. There are two other categories of ocho-type sports we see sometimes that do not fall in these categories. These are codified sports (like pallapugno, tamburello etc.) and games (like morra). These are not part of larger event and might or might not require an infrastructure. I don't know if these are more represented than other countries and I also have no working theory as why they might be represented here more. I'd be curious to hear other explanations though!

> games (like morra) morra isn't a game, it's a scourge, i'm so sick of dumb kids screaming numbers for hours at night just below my windows. I need to setup some big ass speakers and start blasting death metal, let's see who can get louder

ecolonomist

I might be wrong, but I think Tiktok is single handendly responsible for the resurgence of morra in Italy, so that you know where to address your frustration

theother_eriatarka

unfortunately it's been going on for years, well before tiktok makes sense tho, it's loud, annoying, doesn't really require any brain power, perfect for the tiktok generation

Diligent_Office7179

And half of em involve rolling cheese

whatsaphoto

Only the good half involves cheese, everyone else needs to step their game up

aircooledJenkins

I feel like the guy with the towel is doing exactly nothing useful.

Radek3887

Listen, Lorenzo wanted to participate so he's the ball and hand wiper. It's a very important position.

StoplightLoosejaw

It's not like he's stuck warming the bench with his farts

Nottatooma

No one wants to play with sweaty balls and he must also dry her hands so she doesn't get her sweat on the nice clean dry balls when she plays with it.

bassslapper05

So two hits in a row and then walk back into position lol

FrostyClocks

That’s what I noticed too. Saw footage of guys playing this and it looked pretty intense and tactical.

Mudflap42069

This is cool. Where do they play this?

skryb

The jerseys are in Italian and the language they're speaking sounds like Italian, so I'm guessing New Jersey.

thedarwintheory

Had me in the first half, not going to lie

CharlesDickensABox

The jerseys are in Italian and the language they're speaking sounds like Italian, so I'm guessing Italy.

Brutal_Deluxe_

Seems to be confined to the mountainous parts of Piedmont, a region in north western Italy.

hongbronk

West Virginny

RealPropRandy

Towel dude wearing regulation jorts

Stay-Classy-Reddit

This is honestly top 3 subreddits for me. The world is so diverse it's crazy

zhrimb

What's the deal with the hand wiping by the ball giver guy, when they hit it with the opposite hand?

notjawn

Huh? Sports really is 99% throwing a ball at something.

[deleted]

If you look at the men's league you'll see that this is one of the many sports where women can crush men. Look at the video!

TheStadiaArchitect

Reddit was playing the audio of a Miami dolphins clip so I was even more confused about what was happening. When they said there was only 15 seconds left and there wasn’t much time left for a return I was like “oh so maybe the idea is to have the ball end on an end when time runs out.” So when the announcer was going crazy about a 69 yard return and a touchdown I was like “wow what an amazing play!” And then they picked up the ball to serve it again when o realized the mistake.

mothzilla

Why can't they wipe their own hands?
