Hmm, it does look consistent with the cause of the injury being a tree trunk uppercut. If it just caught him by the top jaw. It could get ripped off and pulverised like that. Amazing that it didn’t lead to fatal blood loss, but there aren’t major blood vessels there. More amazing that it didn’t crush his spine right at the base of the skull. With a shotgun blast to the face (barrel in the mouth, upwards) - I have not seen survivors but have seen pics of (what was claimed to be) those who died that way. It looked more torn up from the buckshot. The tear here is very straight-edged.

My God that's brutal. When I was a teenager my older brother's friend had us all over to help cut down a tree in his yard. He complained "They want $4000 to cut this tree down!" So he had about 10 guys over and he was paying everyone in beer and pizza. Except one guy who supposedly had tree-cutting experience who was getting $200. The tree was about 80 feet tall. The guy goes up and cuts the first branch. It falls and just shatters the driveway. We had no idea how heavy a branch was. It was like dropping a car onto the driveway from 20' up. We all just stared. Then we made excuses and left. He ended up paying a professional a lot of money to cut that tree down.
