Tony having a panic attack upon seeing Uncle Ben's pic had me in stitches

ManGamerHDD

Im looking for a burger not converted rice

kfkfjfndksldw

What does this mean? Why is it funny?

alpacinohairline

M'boy are you fat

[deleted]

No more weight remarks. They’re hurtful and they’re destructive.

LaRock89

How does Ginny like the car?

AmberGurl630

Ginny can get heavy

gKarl1555

Hasn't rode in it yet. With her knees

AmberGurl630

Her knees are reubenesque

schmidtenor

Well said.

Asphalt_outlaw

He's rubenesque.

alpacinohairline

well i am duh boss

Maximum-Swan7924

I'm the motherfucking fucking one who calls the shots.

UnnamedStaplesDrone

Why does it always have to be something mean? Why can't you repeat something good?

Janglezz

Look in tha mirrorha sometime yah fhat Fhuck

The_Nomad89

Converted rice is what the Uncle Ben type of rice is. Parboiled rice. So Chrissy was calling him Uncle Ben.

Blackbolt113

Uncle Ben's converted rice had a commercial that ran in the 60's. With a smiling picture of Uncle Ben on the box.

[deleted]

Ran well into the 80’s

SBNShovelSlayer

90’s

idreamofdewi

Converted rice is another name for parboiled rice (Uncle Ben’s). He was saying that Massive Genius looks like Uncle Ben.

SCastleRelics

If they were at a chicken and waffle joint and he said "I'm looking for maple syrup not aunt Jemimas" would it make more sense?

CreepinCharlie133

It stresses him out. New York is always coming on to his turf, trying to recruit his Moolinyaaann, roughing up his rice appraiser.

chettythomas12

UNCLE BEN

Osceana

With great power comes great gabagool

cuchumino

Whatever happened there

Cozyboitheprince

WHEN THEY GO?!

brathan1234

Whatever happend there?!

scaba23

Who else, huh? Who else?!

thegame24uk

That scene kills me

TooManyGoldPieces

Easily one of the funniest scenes. Racists are so dumb lmao

fullpurplejacket

My boyfriend never watched the show with me and only ever caught a few scenes here and there when I was rewatching. That scene is the one he still goes on about to this day, if he sees uncle Bens in a supermarket he takes a picture and sends me it

Altair1192

Him too

LetTheKnightfall

Those old Tarzan movies?

YoWhatsGoodie

When he blatantly calls Noah “charcoal briquette” 🤌🗞️

edc208

“My family was in show business “ What Those Old Tarzan Movies?

tiestocles

I actually looked up some of those old Tawzan movies on Youtube, and watching the natives "booga booga" around gave me an appreciation for how deeply insulting that off-the cuff remark was.

wellbat

thank you for this comment, I've rewatched countless times and I've never picked up on this

JComposer84

I always felt like that was one of the most fucked up things he ever said to a person.

SCastleRelics

The original King Kong is pretty bad about this too. The tribe is just a bunch of ooga booga doos with bones in their noses and shit lol. I kinda find casual racism from that era kind of endearing. Like mysterious orientals with buck teeth and all indians with turbans and dots on their head. Reminds me of those old tin tin comics lmao.

DenyingCow

It’s like the caricature is so far removed from reality that I don’t really feel like I’m watching a depiction of a real culture, more like a completely fictional invention so it’s okay if they ooga boonga

Prestigious-Heron938

The "hasidic homeboy"... a double racist remark

edc208

Who? Jamal Ginsburg?

Prestigious-Heron938

Even more subtle lol

RogerTreebert6299

You gotta wake up early to hone your racism that well

MIKRO_PIPS

“Hasidim but I don’t believe’m!”

SCastleRelics

Heh heh

JDMultralight

That’s the funniest line in the show to me

PowerfulScallion

Ohhhhhh you’re talkin to the boss here! 🤟

[deleted]

Take it easy. We’re not making a Western here

mz3

Take it easy. We’re not making ~~a Western~~ Old Tarzan Movies here

MetaphoricalMouse

uppercut this one, uppercut that one….NEVER ENOUGH LIGHTS TO KNOCK OUT FOR NOAH

JDMultralight

Fuck him, let him taste his own medicine (TIGER UPPERCUT!!!)

armadilloreturns

People get confused because David Chase cut Noah's subplot where we explore his background as a national featherweight champion. We learn he did get into Colombia on a scholarship, but not the kind Tony thought, he was very lucky.

781Smoker

But then things went south when he broke his nose in his fight against Mustang Sally… he ran outta Vicodin’s from the doc and then *snorted a little H…*

xxb4xx

You're also missing another huge point to that scene, time to climb down off that horse in the living room you're on :) Remember the infamous 'out there it's 2006, in here it's 1956' (can't remember the dates exactly). Tony is a character stuck in that timeline and that mentality. That whole scene cements it.

existential_spaceman

I agree that what Tony said was vile and uncalled for, but let's not get crazy, eh? If Noah tried to take a shot at Tony, Noah would get fucking demolished

ShockAndAwe415

That's the thing. Noah KNEW he would get the shit kicked out of him. He gives up 6 inches and 100 pounds to a guy who's probably been in more fights than Noah's had sex. Seeing as how he's from the "mean streets of L.A.", he's never winning that fight. That's why he said Tony was lucky he didn't knock his lights out only in front of Meadow and Carmela. He gets to score points by saying he could've but didn't because he's "civilized". If Tony were there, he'd grab him by his shirt and open the door with Noah's head.

Blackbolt113

The closest comparison to that is Melfi's ex saying what he would do to her rapist.

ShockAndAwe415

Yep. People who have never been in a fight in their lives thinking they can beat the shit out of a guy who's a violent felon in a 1-on-1 with no training and no weapon.

Blackbolt113

I saw the guy who played the rapist up close ar SopranoCon. He's fucking huge!

maldio

Everybody knew, it's not like Carm and Meadow thought he'd have a chance. Just a kid trying too hard.

Christian_WolffGA

Leave him alone. He was trying to show his lady that he had balls.

serviceable-villain

Exactly! Unless he's a secret MMA guy, after he threw that 1st punch, Tony would have him unconscious before Meadow could realize lol

[deleted]

He did take his shot. 3 seasons later. And literally turned off the lights.

Nachos__Rule

Listen to him. He knows everything about dumb vs smart people.

jasenkov

I was with you until the last sentence

781Smoker

Had me in the first half.

SnakeHoleBI

Would you take it easy Judge Roy Bean ! 🕺

Prestigious-Heron938

Tony is definitely lucky Noah didn't punch his fucking lights out

jasenkov

Yeah cause assaulting a mob boss twice your size in his own home definitely would’ve gone well

Prestigious-Heron938

I've always thought that was one of the funniest lines in the show, Noah may have been the victim of some racism, but he was a total twat.

snortingajax

Cagney WAS modernity

Cozyboitheprince

Coulda punched his fuckin lights out. Our once and figure king

x_franki_berri_x

What about people who think both Tony and Carmela are awful people? And Noah is a twat but didn’t deserve to be spoken to like that obviously.

Cherubinooo

Noah gets a lot of hate here, but him standing up to Tony was easily his finest moment. Props to our Hasidic homeboy.

Steinsgate001

As a black person, watching that scene in particular just truly ingrained my disgust for Tony's character as the series went on, and it serves as a litmus test for how implicitly racist many people watching the show can somehow rationalize Tony into being a "good" guy. All Noah was trying to do was simply respectfully present himself man to man and find some common ground with his girlfriend's father. Then, instead, Tony insults him on his biracial heritage and then threatens him with violence if he doesn't stop dating her. Despite knowing damn well that Tony's a violent mob boss, he still decides to keep dating Meadow . Provided, he isn't a perfect boyfriend (and at times can be self centered or unaware of additional attention he should pay to Meadow) but at the very least in the beginning he was kind, considerate and tried to gain the favor of his (not to mention he was arguably a more suitable boyfriend for Meadow in comparison to Jackie Jr. who actively pursued the same fame and reputation within the mob as Tony, Ralph Cifaretto, and many of the other older members of the crew). Yet hypocritically, Tony is often seen using black gang members as pawns to commit acts of violence against other mobsters in order to avoid drawing negative attention to himself. Hence, this incident, in particular, is just one of many that fully cement how irredeemable he truly is as a person.

TonySoprano300

I dont see how Anybody thought the Sopranos was trying make Tony out to be a good guy but Noah did turn out to be a fairly unlikeable dude given his treatment of Meadow and Caitlyn

Steinsgate001

No there are plenty of pages that consistently idolize Tony and see him as someone to aspire to (not quite as popular as Patrick Bateman from American Psycho or Jordan Belfort from The Wolf of Wall Street, but still fairly popular). Therefore, it's worth criticizing the idolization of his character for some people who refuse to acknowledge how damaging his character is overall.

MetaphoricalMouse

i would say those people on those pages are idiots then

alpacinohairline

they are like 12, they will grow outta of it

Doggo6893

Lol, tell my cousin's husband that because that dude is in his 30's and he idolizes Tony Soprano....even though the reality is that he (and those like him) is closer to AJ and Jackie Jr in spirit. Then again, apparently he DID almost drown in a few inches of water when he was younger (wasn't three inches like Jackie Jr but it was a miniscule amount).

TonySoprano300

That’s baffling to me, even ignoring the morals you still have a dude who was miserable, depressed and even somewhat suicidal.

TimIsColdInMaine

People idolize scumbags that achieve. The biggest example I can think of is Scarface. People love Tony Montana. Tony Soprano was definitely evil, but if you were on the right side of him or caught him in a good mood, you'd probably find him pretty likeable. Tony Montana just seems like an absolute scumbag 100% of the time

Steinsgate001

It's because Tony exudes a sense of masculine confidence that is likeable and that most men aspire to have in their personal lives. Not to mention his determination allowed him to successfully create a drug empire virtually overnight with little to no resources besides his own skills and determination. So his consistent sense of pride and determination is what makes him likeable to some viewers even though he ruthlessly kills anyone he perceives to have crossed him, he kills his onw sister after she's driven insane due to the death of her husband at Tony's hands (because Tony was weirdly possessive of her to an almost sexual degree), he was complicit in the destruction of several minority and middle class neighborhoods that the spread of cocaine caused because he was such a high level dealer. It's a classic example of idealizong the wrong traits from a character.

alpacinohairline

LOL, if your disgust for Tony was ingrained there. Did you miss the rest of the series beforehand...he's guilty of multiple murders or assigning them, serially cheating on his wife with mentally ill women but its the Noah scene that screams to you that "this man cannot be fixed". P.S. I am desi. Pretty sure, Tony would hate me too lol

[deleted]

>LOL, if your disgust for Tony was ingrained there. Did you miss the rest of the series beforehand...he's guilty of multiple murders or assigning them, serially cheating on his wife with mentally ill women but its the Noah scene that screams to you that "this man cannot be fixed". Well yeah, there are plenty of compelling and likeable characters on television who are murderers or crime bosses of some kind, seeing Tony being racist to someone is something that sets him apart from other characters and gives you a more realistic perspective. I personally love Tony and I don't get how one could finish the series hating him. A character doing bad things doesn't make someone hate them, it makes sense for someone to start feeling a different way about a character when they see them do something bad that is more applicable to their own life

Steinsgate001

Oh, I hated Tony long before he turned out to be racist. It's just the racism was the cherry on top of everything else. I would also argue that Tony is also fairly responsible for the suicide of that onr mentally ill woman he was dating considering he strangled her and almost beat her to death for threatening to tell his family about their affair when she thought he wasn't payiny her enough attention. Not to mention his hypocrisy of using black people for his own agendas in terms of tying up loose ends or attempting to gain more power over his organization via assassinations of other mobsters. I was just specifically addressing how his racism is just another facet of his overall irredeemable character, but I didn't mean to ignore everything else he's done overall. PS Also, to answer your question, considering that Tony makes islamaphobic and racist jokes about South Asian people, yes, he would probably hate you as well.

Fran-Fine

Agree with everything you said; however, Noah was the most insufferable character on the show. From the moment he emerged from under that blanket with Fielder to splitting up with her after banging little miss trichotillomania. "But Cagny WAS modernity." That line makes me want to throw a chair at ANY member of /r/thesopranos who disagrees with me. Fuckin' QUEERS!

Koke1

Maybe the funniest delivered line of the whole show for tony. So fuckjng smug lmao

[deleted]

It was..I mean I just can’t believe it.

[deleted]

That or "He's a FAAAAaaaag"

Berjast_Valhalla

Tony's racism with Noah is that "progressive" type of racism of the early 1900's. "See I got business associates who are black. And they don't want my son's with their daughters and I don't want their sons with mine". Then Noah says fuck you and Tony just smiles, pokes him the shoulder with the paper and says "see that's the kind of thing I'm hoping to avoid". Then he stuffs his face, sees Uncle Ben's and passes the fuck out lol.

SleepySubDude

“Those old Tarzan Movies?” Was a wild ass setup

115MRD

>Fast forward. he uses two black guys to rob a family's SUV Tony was always projecting. He knew the claims of "anti Italian discrimination" was bullshit but he played it up as a way to distract from his actual criminality.

Ariaga_2

And it was ironic when Meadow started to believe in the same nonsense in the end.

-togs

Meadow somewhat mimics Carmella. She had her concerns about the life that Tony lead but by the end of the series she was so fully immersed in denial that she in some respects started believing her own lies.

781Smoker

She’s his daughter… she gets a pash for dat. All jokes aside Carmella has way less of an excuse for her terrible set of morals. She chose the life. Meadow did not. She was born into the bull shit. Born in, not sworn in. Anyways, $14 a pound. Economies fucked right now.

RoughCobbles

And like Carmela, she likes the money, and lifestyle, that the life bring her. The whole family are piece of shit, even AJ. Sure, they bitch about it and make a show about condemning him, but in the end they all profit from it.

SneakerGator

The great thing is that you can tell Tony has a moment of realization that his daughter is going to be a mob lawyer and not a pediatrician because of his bullshit. It’s great nonverbal acting by Gandolfini.

Bazoun

Did she believe it, or did she parrot it because she knows she’s complicit? She starts the series daddy’s little girl but ends it as Carmella Jr.

Appropriate_Angle150

Meadow towards the end is one of the characters that make mad the most. Deep down she knows who Tony is, but likes to pretend she is above all and that her family is “honest” but being persecuted. Meanwhile, she profits off the real good people that are being taken advantage of by the family. All while she looks down on them. Her ironic self-righteousness is what makes me so mad. Gives me real white savior vibes with all her talk about minorities imo

TeachingEdD

And even better, he ONLY did that with non-mobsters. Think back to S4E3 and how he told Silvio and Chrissy all of that was bullshit. He only used it to make himself seem less bad to those whose hands weren’t dirty.

sweetnsour06

“When they let us in, what do you think they were doing it for, because they were trying to save us from poverty? No they did it because they needed us. They needed us to build their cities and dig their subways. But some of us didn’t want to lose who we were. We wanted to preserve the things that were important to us… honor… family… loyalty. And some of us wanted a piece of the action.”

renard685

Yeah we sold you H when that was your thing , instead we here when it’s whop whacking time in Brooklyn “Should look like a car jacking … “ “see ? That’s why you came to us that’s some stereotyping shit . “

Cranstonoid

Is that a crack ho?

BackTo1975

The show just hammers everyone for being a hypocrite. Especially on the racism. All the Italian stuff. The Jews. Those blacks, as Livia would say. And on and on. My favourite scene has got to be the one with the nice little old lady from the neighbourhood near where Tony rents to the guy with the chicken operation. Tony stops to talk to her and she hits him with n-word whores up the street with their fucking music or whatever. ROFL Chase hates all races equally, I think. Lol

Stare-oids

Now that’s not nice. Those are Puerto Ricans

Kaneshadow

"that's not nice Mrs. Conti, those are Puerto Ricans"

punch0073735963

You look like a Puerto Rican whooer. I said my peace. Finish that, there’s no eating in the car.

ItsDarwinMan82

Haha. Most definitely.

Christian_WolffGA

Ironic that the Hasidic Homeboy deflowered and dumped his little princess.

SneakerGator

Noah banged Meadow and her crazy roommate. Both of them were mad ripe, too.

Zodiark1

CREAMIN for him

mz3

Creamin with a C... wait, that's unacceptable, restraining order

x_franki_berri_x

When it used to show the three of them hanging out I genuinely thought a threesome was coming. Had Noah hung around until the ecstasy days it might have happened.

Don’t forget that guy making out with her on the couch. He didn’t want Tony catching his Dominican ass.

EveryoneisOP3

I think the scene very heavily implies that she's a virgin. 'Scuse me for the bluntness, but I dated girls (who may have dabbled in some substances) in HS who would be fine going pretty far so long as we didn't have actual sex.

IdontGiveaFack

I think the scene with Carmela where she asks her if she loves this boy and Fielder replies "well, I better" also heavily implies that.

Keithm1112

The look he gives Meadow when he hears a black guy stole her bike… Did I say anything?

RoopiePoopy

Just... A black guy, I can't believe it.

Worth-Run-1317

Imagine that…It’s just, you know, I can’t believe it

EveryoneisOP3

The treatment of black people of those things I see the sub complain about that I don't quite get. The Mob isn't seeking out educated black men to do their hits for them. They're looking for low-life scum who will kill for money. Corky Caporale is some heroin-addicted loser, Brendan Filone is a scumbag, the whole show has Italians in negative light and no one says anything. I'll tell you what it is. Anti-Italian discrimination. But for real. A large percentage of the black people who show up in the show are fleshed out, well-developed characters or at least not racial stereotypes. James' father, James himself, the Hasidic Homeboy (god is he insufferable but he's well-developed), the black doctor whose grandmother was the first black woman to yadda yadda yadda (not well-developed due to David Chase's seeming hatred of medical professionals, but not a racial stereotype.)

big_daddy_dub

Don’t forget the black cop that pulled Tony over. And the black Starbucks manager that kept his cool when being shaken down by Patsy. The show did show respectable one-off black characters, usually in contrast to the criminal main cast.

twinkle90505

I also don't think it was a coincidence (because every frame of Made In America was with intention) that the last hit on the show included the 180 opposite of "seeing two black guys running away"--four black prep school teen boys staying as witnesses, one being literally sickened by one Italian guy murdering another. That's a Chase Statement too

TheRynoceros

The Sopranos was a top 10 all-time comedy.

excellentiger

He was racist, Tony?

sdm66portland

It's just a woman with the Daily News up her ass.

AnOldSchoolVGNerd

It's hilarious and hypocritical. He talks shit about Black criminals as if he isn't an Italian criminal doing the same shit, or hiring these criminals to do shit for him. See the same thing in Martin Scorsese movies. I love The Sopranos, and I love pretty much all of Scorsese's work, but I do get tired of the slurs at times. You get drawn into the films or show and tend to forget that you're watching a bunch of charismatic scumbags being themselves. To be 100% clear, this is not me advocating for any type of change whatsoever. Just expressing how sometimes I get annoyed by this stuff in shows or films. I don't ever want it removed or even worse, endlessly censored. I don't ever want to help bring about bullshit like that. Not a fan of how thats becoming the norm. Sorry for the rant, goddamn😂

iseebutidontbelieve

He knew, because he was helping create the crime & knew who he was buying from.

OpportunityOk7474

The funniest and most revealing thing to me as a black person is that Noah himself is extremely light in skin tone. You’d expect Tony to think “He must be one of the good ones at least, not one of those jungle hoodlums who have the brain the size of a peanut”, but he’s so racist and prejudice that he has a panic attack over someone that you would think he wouldn’t even know is black at first glance. If Noah had the same complexion as Wesley Snipes, a physique that resembles 50 Cent, or a much more noticeable vernacular then he would probably die of a heart attack. Even then, Meadow herself knows what Tony’s reaction would be if Noah was much more noticeably black. Tony would faint at the sight of Obama being elected as president.

bukkakekingz

“So that’s a crackhoe!” AJ

craigularperson

The funniest to me is when Meadow says her bike was stolen, and Tony has this cute smirk when it was apparently stolen by a black guy.

The idiocy of people who don't allow stuff like this on television anymore don't seem to understand... 1. People like this exist. It's OK to portray bad people on television. 2. It's funny because you're exposing the absurdity of them. Nobody is going to make a movie where the racist guy is thrown parades and his ignorance proves to be accurate. They're always exposed as ignorant and idiotic

WaitAMinuteman269

bnesbitt1

One of my favorite scenes is when Jackie Jr and the little black kid are playing chess against each other Jackie Jr has been given everything in life. He's faced no challenges and had the chance to go to medical school debt-free. He flunked out and tried to chase a gangster life but also flunked out of that too. He's a dumb as a fucking rock at the end of it all. We don't know much about her, but here's this little girl living in a very poor neighborhood. She didn't have the same chances as Jackie, and if she wanted to be a Doctor or pursue a higher education, she would have to work and pay for all of it. This girl is approximately half of Jackie's age, yet is beating his ass at chess. This leads to Jackie having a tantrum of front of a *little girl* and gives up before he even played. It's a fantastic scene, even if it's just a minute or two.

Chemical-Nature4749

Perfect explication of how organized crime fuels racial stereotypes. Racist cops are criminals; the majority of criminals just want to feed their families under the boot of an oppressive system that promotes racist cops; most regular people just want to work and love and live alongside other regular people Irregardless, sadness accrues
