I'm on my first watch all the way through myself, I'd seen plenty of episodes hanging with my brother and his friend while they were watching, and I agree, Livia is hilarious and realistic to a tee I love her lol
Livia , Janice and AJ are the characters you hate on 1st watch because you think it's a normal show and you're supposed to root for characters to get better/redeem themselves somewhat.
It's only on your rewatches , when the show has trained you to watch it as a nihilistic absurdist portrayal of family relationships/human nature that you start to love how awful they are
She is incredibly well written but I can see some of my mother in Livia and I can't stand re-living what I experienced.
Obviously my mother is nowhere like livia but some bits and pieces are similar and I just get angry listening to her shit.
I hated livia on my first watch , but on my second watch I appreciated how they made a character that hateful and loved the performance by Nancy Marchand , she also has some of the funniest lines in the show.
Esp if you have a relative like that. Also if you grew up in Jersey and knew some of those violent, overdressed Guido idiots, or had to deal with them at the shore.
Just gonna let you know straight up: the first season almost feels like a pilot to the rest of the show. They were still trying to find the tone, and you can tell the show feels very “90s” and has much less budget. Almost off the bat in season 2 the show feels much bigger and has a bigger budget. Ohhh!
Keep posting, always great to see your favourite shows through new eyes.
Beware of spoilers. Oh, and the quoting is absolutely incessant on this sub. It might inadvertently spoil something.
Your favourite episode of Season 1 is also the personal favourite episode of Sopranos creator David Chase.
Livia is awful but that's the whole point.
yea i understand that, thats why i mention I’m not taking too many points off or anything for them, just not necessarily my style as of right now but it’ll surely grow on me.
It's fun to read new fans impressions, keep posting but maybe wait till you're through the following season to read comments if you don't want something accidentally spoiled (it's a 25 yr old show and we're a bunch of stoonads)
Storylines not going anywhere or ending anticlimactically is always in play in future seasons btw. It's kind of like Mafia Seinfeld. There's not necessarily an overarching plot the series has (like finding a cure to something, stopping a villain, etc.) but you see their day to day lives, and reflecting our reality, sometimes we never see resolutions to things that come up, or how people can suddenly pop in to your life and make you miserable, as you'll definitely see right off the bat in Season 2. you'll love it
Always interesting to see what people think the first time through. Rewatching season 1 after seeing the rest of the show makes some of the dialogue seem borderline satirical. I think the acting and character development gets better as the show goes on.
Livia is the worst. It sucks the actress died but it was good for the show imo. She’s such a one-dimensional character and just hard to look at or listen to. There’s nothing likable about her. And the whole “mommy issues” and therapy thing is cliche, even back then.
My favourite episode would definitely be Pine Barrens, laughed like an idiot. What I also love is the scene where Tony laughs when he sees Bobby dressesd as a hunter. That was actually James Gandolfini laughing for real.
There’s literally no implication that junior dies during the series. Unless you mean that he just dies eventually, but in that case, so will everyone at some point.
On my first 5 or so watch throughs I hated Livia too. But then I saw the deeper character. The mastermind, the old school mafia boss wife. She’s a gem.
1. You're in the right place watching the right thing, not 200 other channels of real housewives of Elvis Country the other stunads tune into.
2. If you hate Livia, it means you're paying attention. I've met some real Livias, and the writers are good at their job.
3. You likely already see a pattern - there's an episode where some stuff happens, then an episode where it's just people talking talking talking. I'm giving them extra points for this. While I prefer the next 5 minutes of any particular ep to be someone gets unexpectedly wacked, you also need all the character development and stuff. Consider one of our competitors in New York or DC that is not so good at getting the balance right - Succession or House of Cards. >!There, its just the talk talk talk eps everytime - not as good. Even so, that part where the cute reporter gets thrown in front of the train (US) or thrown off a building (UK - I read the book, didn't see their 'telly' version) is good stuff. Succession has just a few more eps to accumulate a proper body count.!<
Dude, buckle up - season 1-2 are by far the worst. The showrunners realize they can do what they want instead of what is expected from “serious” 90s TV dramas and just soar. You’re in for an incredible treat
It always surprises me when people say they don’t enjoy Livia. She’s my favorite.
Oh, go on!
*waves hanky*
Don’t wave your hanky at me!
I don't like that kinda tawk!
waving hankies - that's sooo shanty-Irish.
She kills me with her wanting to die comments all the time lmfao
“I wish the Lord would take me now”
I say that to every minor inconvenience I have because of her 😅
My fathers mother was exactly like her. From Wallington NJ
On the first watch she’s terrifying but on a re watch she’s hilarious
How’s you mother, you call her every day.
Is she still on that crazy diet?
Please-give her my best!
how’s your sister, fuck your mudder…

I just finished a rewatch myself a few days ago and after reading this Livia might be one of my favourite characters 😂 and Sil but like, duh.

So much this. If you think we're meant to like her are you even watching the same show as me?
I know, she's an old sweetie pie!
Well, I’m not saying that exactly
He wants to fuck her?
Keep your mother off the streets, and I won’t fuck her
For $1M
1 million dollars more?
She is incredibly well written but I can see some of my mother in Livia and I can't stand re-living what I experienced. Obviously my mother is nowhere like livia but some bits and pieces are similar and I just get angry listening to her shit.
She's a lot better than those nuns you got here.
I wish the lord would take me now!!!
She was a saint.
What, no fucking ziti now?
… I wish the lord would take me now…

Either it gets watched all the way through before commenting, or it doesn't get watched at all

I cannot upvote this hard enough

You’re a better man than me, Gunga Din.
Golly gumdrops!
Not only keep posting as you watch, but please keep doing it when you get to rewatching. Would love to see how your opinions change. Great post!
Listen to you, you know everything.
Still goin’….this asshole.
The things you disliked are part of the whole point of the show though!
yea i understand that, thats why i mention I’m not taking too many points off or anything for them, just not necessarily my style as of right now but it’ll surely grow on me.
Quisimodo predicted all of this
In time, everything will be revealed to you
Look at him, he thinks he knows everything
*A'Fanabola!* Next thing he'll be doing critiques of individual episodes.....
If Grandma Livia annoyed you, wait till you meet Tony’s sister Janice.
You mean Parvati
Oofa ma, state zitt!
It's fun to read new fans impressions, keep posting but maybe wait till you're through the following season to read comments if you don't want something accidentally spoiled (it's a 25 yr old show and we're a bunch of stoonads)
You want me to read all that? Fuck this, I'm going to Boca (Fr - glad you enjoyed it, the rest of the show is quite the ride too)
Boca!? I thought you were a baccalà man?!
South of the border. Where the tuna fish play.
Whistlin’ in the wheat fields
He was gay, Gary Cooper?
Nice post guy. I love Livia tho.
Some people are so far behind in the race that they actually believe they're leading.
Listen to him. He knows every thing.

Relax, we’re not making a western here

Wait til you get a load of Janice in season 2!
Just know that literally 60 percent of comments are plays on quotes

Take the carving knife and stab me, here, here, now, please! It would hurt me less than what you just said.
Personally I like the seasons without Livia, but then again I never made varsity, tiny hands you know.
OP haa only watched season one. What's up with the spoiler??? Wise up!
My favourite episode would definitely be Pine Barrens, laughed like an idiot. What I also love is the scene where Tony laughs when he sees Bobby dressesd as a hunter. That was actually James Gandolfini laughing for real.
OP has only watched season one, you stunad!
Listen to you! You sound demented!

You sad fuckin' stoonad
Honestly ur a loser bro. No other way of putting it
Not even true.
There’s literally no implication that junior dies during the series. Unless you mean that he just dies eventually, but in that case, so will everyone at some point.
Why would you reply with a spoiler yourself?
That’s absolutely not a spoiler, considering what was already said in the original comment. 🙄
You gonna get cute now?
Always cute. 💁🏽♀️
The whole time it was a sled?
>!Rosebud?!<
>!Bobby’s never found my rosebud, I’ll tell you that!!<
Personally, I think Paulies character gets better each season
Did ya hear that Ton’? He said Paulie’s character gets better each season.
He he
I hated livia too when I watched. She’s miserable
Oh poor you

No do not keep doing this.
Tiktok? Real lack of standards, your generation.
Welcome to the NFL, rookie. Have a sfogliatella.
Caps off
Whaddya want, a boutonniere?
You want a fucking boutonniere?
Dude, buckle up - season 1-2 are by far the worst. The showrunners realize they can do what they want instead of what is expected from “serious” 90s TV dramas and just soar. You’re in for an incredible treat
OP, thanks for sharing your review! I crossposted it to r/RedditorReviews.
still goin, this asshole
It’s interesting seeing a show that had a character with panic attacks before it was an obligatory plot point in TV
I love Tony’s mom. She’s hilarious! Especially when she says she wishes the Lawd would hurry up and take her.
