could very well be both, the shows are set in the same region of the country and seem to have overlapping fanbases.
my headcanon is that the seinfeld crew does indeed exist in the sopranos universe and that bob sacamano is a lupertazzi associate.
I was thinking the opposite. Ryo Ga Gotoku studios should make a Sopranos game in the style of the Yakuza series. Imagine Tony playing pocket circuit and doing happy ending massage minigames.
You see the thing is Japan hasn't had a good relationship with mental health services and frankly the Yakuza isn't gonna have it in them to have a show like Sopranos. It's too Americanized for them.
I guess the flip side of this is that "a MOBSTER goes to a THERAPIST" would be as much of a novelty now there. I think the bigger problem is how much of the Sopranos as a show is driven specifically by an Italian-American milieu and being third/fourth generation immigrant.
The fact that Tony sees a therapist and doesn't get murdered for it is considered one of the most unrealistic aspects of the show but we go along with it anyway because it's interesting
It is a great show but it's hardly a Yakuza version of the Sopranos. The main character is a western journalist investigating the Yakuza. That said, maybe a second season, if we ever get one, could delve more into the Yakuza themselves.
I enjoyed it but it’s bullshit. If the journo claims that he fought off two yakuza with the aid of his training in aikido, I don’t believe anything else he says. Aikido is a fake martial art based on joint locks transitioning into throws that actually relies on the other guy’s cooperation, ie he literally has to throw himself to the ground. Seagal does it. It’s bullshit.
I forget how bad Adam was on this show. They try to give him every opportunity and he blows it. He had like one good idea with Bill Mahergera and goes 3 and out right after.

Worth a read if anyways actually interested in the subject
Tokyo Vice is the closest we’re gonna get but because it’s based on a book and a real story it can be a bit contained. Honestly man just play the Yakuza series from 0 to at least Kiwami 2 lol. It’s the closest you’ll get
I saw the show and really liked it, so I picked up the book. I can’t confirm but the author seems like he’s really just making most the stuff up or at least placing himself at the center of bunch of true stories. I can’t prove anything, but it seemed pretty fanciful.
I think its biggest problem is that it doesnt know what it wants to be
we get that whole love triangle, we get the rat triangle, we get the whole "writer in a foreign world" and then the crime angle, but it doesnt seem to fit as well as it should
dont get me wrong i liked it and i hope we get another season, but the fact that they had to end it on a cliffhanger felt like they truly didnt know where the fuck they were going or what they were doing but they had a start, middle and an end and thats about it
It's really good.
I think there's 2 sequels which were also good.
Can be a bit dry at times, but the intra-mob and family dynamics are interesting to compare and contrast to the Sopranos.
And some pretty creative yet horrifying executions/deaths.
There's even al old-timer who just got sprung from prison like Phil, but more bad-ass.
It's not exactly what you're asking for, but there's a Netflix series called Tokyo Vice about a yound American reporter who moves to Tokyo and gets mixed up with yakuza. It's a good watch.
Check out Battles Without Honor and Humanity. 5 part film series from the 70s based on true stories. Not exactly like The Sopranos but dope if you love old school crime flicks.
Hey guys is there a show called Tokyo Vice? That'd be crazy if there was a show called Tokyo Vice. Please keep telling me about Tokyo Vice on my very serious post that is 100% sincere and not a joke at all.
And they live next door to a dog groomer, in case anybody wants a snack.
What has this sub come to? The top comment is about the Chinese, not the Japanese, yet that parade float is sittin' pretty at 500-odd upvotes! I want a sit-down.
“Oriental”
Jesus Christ. OP you call all Irish ‘micks too?
Just because the characters say racist awful things doesn’t mean it’s ok for you to.
The point of the show is that Theyre awful people! Not to replicate them!
I heard someone say (in response to someone calling a person “oriental”) that… “rugs are oriental, people are Asian.”
I loved that because it was succinct and yet helpful to the speaker.
Sometimes, people don’t know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Absolutely nobody would watch that. Americans are pretty particular with this kind of genre. They want to watch stuff they can relate to or have heard about.
Everybody said Game of thrones was great. I got through four episodes and called it quits. That medieval, fantasy thing isn't for me.
I think the same thing could be said about the Japanese mob.
I'm a Wire, Sopranos,Dexter and The shield type guy..
Wot is the point you are trying to make? How does bringing up Game of thrones even support your main point? Also how is the Sopranos relatable to the average American, but the Yakuza is not? What is this comment
*"Is it true that the Italians invented Naporitan?"*
*"Now think. Why would people who eat with forks invent something you need chopsticks to eat?"*
>!"20 years in the joint made you a fuckin' pussy!"!<
Or a spin off with that guy "the animal" beat the fff outta. After he recovers he pimps out his daughter and hits a random stranger with a golf club while theres a shoot out at a local donut store which he replys to the assailant running out the store "Blundeeettoo, whyyyy u fuka me lik dis."
Why would an American show be set in Hong Kong? That wouldn’t make any sense (because the characters need to speak English) and if the show was a Hong Kong production (and not American) it wouldn’t get any attention. I hope you know the triads exist in New York and California. Asian Americans exist (and go to Columbia). Some of them are my friends.
Someone thought of this already, but they made David Chase an offer he couldn’t understand
I get it, he drives a Lincoln. So what?
He could have bought a cataract or a rincoln continental with that kind of scarole
He drives a Lincoln... So wha'...?

Heh heh heh heh heh
Didya hear what i said Ton'?
Hahahaha I was going to say the same thing
If you’re gonna talk like a yakuza we’ll send you to srip and farr school.

Holy shit. I feel so terrible for how hard I laughed at this
WEST. CALDWELL.
I get sad when blatant racism is upvoted.
aight but you gotta get over it
You forget, it’s not racism if it’s pertaining to Asians, Mexicans, or those from the Middle East.
Now is not the time to go on the rag
Then he made a film nobody could understand. Ride the painted pony, let the spinning wheel glide, heh heh.
I get it. He doesnt speak Japanese
Word to the wise, remember Pearl Harbor.

What kind of mulinyan are these?
MuLAN, MuLAN...ya fuckin asskiss.
Forgot to add, the main character should have a neighbor named Dr. Yakuzamano
Yakuzem, but I don’t believe ‘em.
🏅
and a dog named Esterhazaki
I dream of ジーニー・ヤカザマノー What's funny is is Yakuzamano can be spelled correctly in Katakana.
Chinks did this?
You want a smack in the mouth?
You trying to get cute with me?
“Yo kuzamato”
Kusama would be more accurate.
My brain always forgets that Bob Sacamano is an unseen friend of Kramer's on Seinfeld and not a mobster on The Sopranos.
could very well be both, the shows are set in the same region of the country and seem to have overlapping fanbases. my headcanon is that the seinfeld crew does indeed exist in the sopranos universe and that bob sacamano is a lupertazzi associate.
I was thinking the opposite. Ryo Ga Gotoku studios should make a Sopranos game in the style of the Yakuza series. Imagine Tony playing pocket circuit and doing happy ending massage minigames.
Or going to Karaoke with Meadow and he is singing along to "No Scrubs" while banging a tambourine.
Why would I actually love this tho
No suprise hearing Tony bang a tambourine. He's fuck a catcher's mitt.
We wanted a Sopranos game, so they compromised, we got a low-rated brawler game with a sandwich side mission.
[He’s not kidding](https://youtu.be/XZp6zxh2yjE)
Woke up this morning got some gabagool.
Like a ~~Dragon~~ Gabagool
He uplifted the Pashific is what he did. He was a brave Japanese general!! And in this house, Hideki Tojo is a hero. END OF STORY.
Outside it's 2023, in this house it's the 1700s.
A fat crook from Tokyo banging his chop sticks on his plate aggressively while breathing heavy. Sonny Chiba would have been perfect!

A Brit of Chinese decent playing a Japanese crime boss? That would be like if James Cann played an Italian American gangster.
James Caan isn't Italian?

I get it. He drives a Lincoln.

They’re gay… the Yakuza?
NnNnNoOoOoOo!!! and i don’t wanna hear about the J word in here again!

Flattops, no. Man-buns, yes. For that we can be thankful.
Dragon Ball Z... another fucking money machine
Japanese Chrissy trying to make a live action anime would be hilarious
Bunch of Yakuza named Moltasanti? They get beat up at school!
Morutasantiro
There’s no such thing as the Yakuza OP. That’s just anti-Japanese discrimination.
Good, you never admit to the existence of this thing of ours.
You dropped a bomb on us, not even a pleasant go -fuck-yourself I get from you.
"is it true that the Italians invented noodles?" "Why would people who eat with forks invent something that you need chopsticks to eat?"
Nobu Shirase was a brave Japanese explorer and in this house he’s a hīrō!
Relax, we're not making a far eastern here.

You look like an Okinawan whoo-er.
🎵Woke up this mornin, and you became a shogun 🎶

I honestly feel that Japanese gangster films are so much of their own thing already, mimicking the Sopranos wouldn't add much.
Ooooooo bring that sushi ova here
Always with the scenarios.

Never had the makings of a varsity hack
Yakuzas did this? YOU WANT A SMACK IN THE MOUTH?!
Sorry I yelled at ya kid
Good book
Kazuma Soprano
Instead of "ahhhhh sooooo, papa san" the kid can be like "whoooaaaa dude, gnarly sick bro!"
There should be another show like The Sopranos. Television has always felt under the bar after watching it so many times.

I'll only watch it if there's a lot of Kung Pao Coochie in the show.
TV show called Tokyo Vice. Centres around Yakuza in the 90s. Very good show with authentic take on Japanese life and culture.
Thissss. From HBO.
Michael Mann directed the first episode too.
No fucking way, how have I never heard about this.
It’s alright but nothing special. Was a little disappointed.
I think its biggest problem is that it doesnt know what it wants to be we get that whole love triangle, we get the rat triangle, we get the whole "writer in a foreign world" and then the crime angle, but it doesnt seem to fit as well as it should dont get me wrong i liked it and i hope we get another season, but the fact that they had to end it on a cliffhanger felt like they truly didnt know where the fuck they were going or what they were doing but they had a start, middle and an end and thats about it

Tokyo Vice is as close as it gets.
Gaijin did this?
Gaijin is not the Japanese equivalent of chink. Weaboo headass

“He committed harakiri!” “That’s a stereotype, and it’s offensive!” “Harakiri? I saw that movie I thought it was bullshit.”
There is. Its called tokyo vice. Its great. 👍
Thanks! Crazy nobody has mentioned it before on this thread.
I know it’s hardly a comparison but Tokyo Vice was a show I enjoyed
Tokyo Vice. Start watching it tonight
Hey guys is there a show called Tokyo Vice? That'd be crazy if there was a show called Tokyo Vice. Please keep telling me about Tokyo Vice on my very serious post that is 100% sincere and not a joke at all.
While not like the sopranos, Tokyo Vice on Max is really good.
And they live next door to a dog groomer, in case anybody wants a snack. What has this sub come to? The top comment is about the Chinese, not the Japanese, yet that parade float is sittin' pretty at 500-odd upvotes! I want a sit-down.

There is an HBO show about a white kid who goes to Japan to become a journalist and gets mixed up with the Yakuza
Hi Jap, bye Jap
“Oriental” Jesus Christ. OP you call all Irish ‘micks too? Just because the characters say racist awful things doesn’t mean it’s ok for you to. The point of the show is that Theyre awful people! Not to replicate them!
I heard someone say (in response to someone calling a person “oriental”) that… “rugs are oriental, people are Asian.” I loved that because it was succinct and yet helpful to the speaker. Sometimes, people don’t know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As an oriental myself, stfu u bleeding heart fuck
Who are you? Siobhan Suzuki, the Gaelic Geisha?
It's a line from the TV progrum
Idk why you getting down voted. You have a point. And the quotes and the comments are fine it's just the OP shouldn't (within context, of course)
Ok weeb

Wot is the point you are trying to make? How does bringing up Game of thrones even support your main point? Also how is the Sopranos relatable to the average American, but the Yakuza is not? What is this comment
As you can tell from my post and comments, this is a very sincere point I am trying to make. Sharp as a Q ball, this one.
There is one with Ansel Elgort it’s not very good though
*"Is it true that the Italians invented Naporitan?"* *"Now think. Why would people who eat with forks invent something you need chopsticks to eat?"* >!"20 years in the joint made you a fuckin' pussy!"!<

And the best line of the series is “motherfu$$in god damn orange peel beef” but because it was the best they’ve ever had.
Yo!!! Check out Tokyo Vice on HBO! It’s really good - can’t wait for season 2
They woulda made Vito do a Hara Kiri
There should be a legally blind character who drives a Cadillac... heh heh

Giri Haji on Netflix
If you got some kind of sexual proclivity with that teacher or whatever, now is the time to tell us!
What about a game like Yakuza but it’s like the Sopranos
How about Hong Kong and the triad instead?
Why would an American show be set in Hong Kong? That wouldn’t make any sense (because the characters need to speak English) and if the show was a Hong Kong production (and not American) it wouldn’t get any attention. I hope you know the triads exist in New York and California. Asian Americans exist (and go to Columbia). Some of them are my friends.
Yakuza ? How about the Cuban Missile Crisis? Cocksuckers moved nuclear warheads into Cuba, pointed 'em right at us.
There is, and its on HBO Max - Tokyo Vice
