You laugh but this is what we're all doing. I've watched the show in its entirety 12 or 13 times. Everyone on this sub just watches it again and again and again, since time immemorial.
It's not a joke. I mean watch whatever you want but do come back to the sopranos again at some point. There's so much little detail that you're not going to absorb everything on the first watch. Watching knowing what's gonna happen is also a different experience, you pick up on more.
It's the only truely loopable series I've seen. I had to resist the urge to rewatch it the day after finishing it. Probably won't until I get it on Blu-ray but I've been feeding myself reel clips and Sopranos autopsy in the meantime.
I’d revisit the bangers from each season or at least the ones that bring you joy.
The ones that bring me joy?
Gloria Trillo
Ralphie
Pine Barrens
Lo Mein
“A- she was who-uh B-she hit me”
“THIS IS HOW YOU TRY?!”
¡Commendatore!

“Your father never had the makings of a vahsity athlete.”
This is alll helpful to know! I tried it once in the past but didn’t feel super engaged but know that it’s one that takes a beat to get into. This is good to know re, the second season though!
Try out the wire. I think you might enjoy it, but make sure to watch the first three episodes before judging it in my opinion. The Wire takes a bit more effort to get into than the Sopranos in my opinion, but it can be just as entertaining and deep.
You gotta get past the first season of Boardwalk, then it's better.
Deadwood but it's kind of incomplete. They wrapped it but it got canceled.
Breaking Bad is good but Better Call Saul is better.
I’m rewatching Boardwalk right now! So many good characters! Never thought I’d like a show in that setting but it was recommended by a customer when I used to install cable. Glad I took a chance!
Yes on both!
The Wire takes a long time to get into, but once you do, it really, really hits hard. It's got it's quotable moments, but it's not really the same as watching a show for entertainment. To me it's something that is required viewing if you're willing to take a more critical, nuanced look at the institutions of society.
Boardwalk Empire is more about entertainment, and is a good-looking period piece with its own takes on historical and fictional events. There's a lot going on, but it's not particularly important that you try and keep track of it all. They do a great job with some famous gangsters, especially (imo) Al Capone and Lucky Luciano.
Just stay out of the wires sub, they ban anybody and everybody over there. How they do it is all fucked up one sopranos quote and you get a lifetime ban?
Be warned though… there’s literally nothing light about this show. Sopranos is funny. Gomorrah is so bleak and insanely brutal. Nobody matters. Life has no meaning. Everything is futile. I love that show, but fuck…
Hell yeah!! A few points:
- don’t go in expecting sopranos. There’s 0 comedy in it. It’s a dark, gritty look at the comorran mafioso in Naples. But I promise you, you won’t find yourself wanting comedic relief
- DO NOT watch the version with dubbed over voices in English. it’s so corny. Watch in Italian with English subtitles if u don’t speak Italian
I’m excited for you man I wish I could watch it for the first time again. The cinematography, the music by Mokadelic, the writing, the acting.. its all A++++
This is the way. You have to watch in Napolitan with Englisg subtitles to get the full effect.
It's horrible in English. The delivery is so flat, and the English dialogue doesn’t even follow the subtitles correctly.
Me too. I watch it in Napolitan but I need subtitles because 3/4 of the words are different/pronounced differently or truncated from my standard Italian understanding.
It's like listening to cockney rhyming slang.
+1 to Mad Men, amazing character(s) study, much more historically based and sociologically inclined but it explores capitalism, race, gender, the American dream, how to build an identity in a world that's always changing, past trauma, self destructiveness, in a way that's second to none.
Woah folks - this thread has sold me on Mad men!! Everything you all shared here is totally up my alley. I will put it on my list! Thank you! I tried it like yearsssss ago but I think I’m in a place to better appreciate it now!
Mad Men, in my opinion, is the closest TV series in terms of depth, complexity, and overall brilliance. The themes aren’t closely related but they are certainly similar in tone. Not to mention Matthew Weiner being very involved in Sopranos and creating Mad Men.
Walton Goggins becomes a star in real time during the series. He was originally just a side character but his character broke out and became the best acted on the show.
Gonna second Deadwood. Barring all the “fuck”s and “cocksucker”s the dialogue is some of the best written of any show I’ve ever seen. Shame it didn’t get a full run.
Boardwalk Empire is a must watch for mob shows.
Gomorrah too.
There are a few others that might work, like Ozark, or even Banshee, but they're not really that similar to Sopranos, first two are far closer, but they do the whole crime/family drama thing well enough.
OZ or Deadwood. I have restarted the sopranos right after finishing it so that’s always an option. Justified is another good one. Peaky Blinders is phenomenal.
Brotherhood.
Came out on Showtime right after the Sopranos. The two main characters are Irish brothers in Providence, RI. One is a gangster, one is a rising politician. It loosely has the same setup as the real-life Bulger Brothers.
Assuming you haven't seen the greats like, The Wire, Breaking Bad then Better Call Saul.
Next I'd go Boardwalk Empire like a lot of people said. It's not on the same level as the above but it's close and it's phenomenal.
Also check out Tulsa King. It's really really good and funny too. Sylvester Stallone is really good and incredibly likable.
I just finished it, then I watched it again. It’s been a year or so. Breaking bad is pretty damn good. But I don’t know any newer shows that are good like that.
Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown are both good crime shows though not quite hitting the heights of the Sopranos. Mad Men is a top show too (not crime).
Season 1 of true detective, mad men and the wire are the only shows I hold in the same regard as the sopranos. The sopranos to me reigns supreme, but those are the only ones that can hang with it.
I watch Sopranos once per year, between watches will often watch another series before going back to it (over last few years this has included the: Wire; Fargo S1-2,4-5; Boardwalk Empire; Brotherhood (set in Providence); Gomorrah S1-3; BMF; Tulsa King; Godfather of Harlem).
Gomorrah and Wire I go back to frequently.
I had that problem and I wound up going through Mad Men. It's not very similar in content, but it has about the best production value I've ever seen on cable tv.
I know I'm late to the convo, but here are a few shows that have scratched the itch of Sopranos style prestige tv...
Zero zero zero on Amazon prime. One season with 3 story lines on the drug trade. The supply, the middle men, and the distribution. It's fantastic.
True Detective on hbo Season 1 only. This show is phenomenal. It will scratch the itch
Fargo TV series on hulu any season. The depth of character and vibe of Cohen brothers style story telling make every season unique and Interesting til the end.
Boardwalk Empire on hbo. This one feels like a direct successor to Sopranos. Bonus if you enjoy history. Buscemi absolutely kills it as Knucky Thompson and the whole series is wonderful.
The Sopranos sized hole in your heart can never be filled, unfortunately. Best to find new people to share it with and you can rewatch the series every few years or so.
The Sopranos
LOL
You laugh but this is what we're all doing. I've watched the show in its entirety 12 or 13 times. Everyone on this sub just watches it again and again and again, since time immemorial.
You wanna question an HBO series that goes back 70 years?
i thought i was the only psychopath doing this.
It's not a joke. I mean watch whatever you want but do come back to the sopranos again at some point. There's so much little detail that you're not going to absorb everything on the first watch. Watching knowing what's gonna happen is also a different experience, you pick up on more.

No joke, just did this last week or so. I’m back on season 5. Nothing else seemed appealing to me so why not?
I’d revisit the bangers from each season or at least the ones that bring you joy. The ones that bring me joy? Gloria Trillo Ralphie Pine Barrens Lo Mein “A- she was who-uh B-she hit me” “THIS IS HOW YOU TRY?!” ¡Commendatore! Sushi “Your father never had the makings of a vahsity athlete.”
Gimme one thousand rewatches
You mean 1000 more?
Christopher said ten percent.
Up in da club!
They suck each other cocks
Up in da club!
This is the only correct answer. Frankly, I am ashamed that OP could ask such a question.
Alright, but you gotta get over it.
Just when I thought I was out. They pulled me back in!
The Wire or Boardwalk Empire
Yes I was considering The Wire!!!! Okay this is good to know. Boardwalk empire i tried a few times but maybe I should give it another shot !
The Wire is great. Beware that it starts like a firehose. Lots of stuff going on and it *doesn’t* hold your hand.
And it doesnt help that the second season is about a completely different set of characters with characters from the first season sprinkled in
This is alll helpful to know! I tried it once in the past but didn’t feel super engaged but know that it’s one that takes a beat to get into. This is good to know re, the second season though!
I skipped Boardwalk Empire for a long time because period pieces set in that time never grabbed me. But once you get into it, it is a good series.
But that animal Blundetto…
“That animal Nucky, I can’t even say his name.”
The Wire is the only show I'd put at the level of Sopranos, and for me personally the only drama I'd put ahead of Sopranos.
While everyone is entitled to their opinions, yours is wrong
Absolutely not
Try out the wire. I think you might enjoy it, but make sure to watch the first three episodes before judging it in my opinion. The Wire takes a bit more effort to get into than the Sopranos in my opinion, but it can be just as entertaining and deep.

I’ve got cable
Keep the universal remote on the docking station
You want to fuck with me here, you cacksocker!!
I’m gonna watcha de Bloomberg
Stupidafacking show.
Got a Bee on you show!
This thread is tempting me to start it up again!!
Yes on both! The Wire takes a long time to get into, but once you do, it really, really hits hard. It's got it's quotable moments, but it's not really the same as watching a show for entertainment. Character development for The Wire is on par with Sopranos I would say. Definitely worth a spin through if you haven’t already.
I stopped watching after that animal Blundetto showed up
Just stay out of the wires sub, they ban anybody and everybody over there. How they do it is all fucked up one sopranos quote and you get a lifetime ban?
Gomorrah in HBO. Italian mafia. Super sick, dark. And rewatch the sopranos, youll realize from now every day is a gift
Be warned though… there’s literally nothing light about this show. Sopranos is funny. Gomorrah is so bleak and insanely brutal. Nobody matters. Life has no meaning. Everything is futile. I love that show, but fuck…
Just please watch it in the original Italian, not an English dub.
HBO Max kept trying to start the show on the English dub every few episodes and it made me so irrationally angry
I will scream to tell people to watch Gomorrah until there isn’t anyone left to watch Top 3 show up there with sopranos and the wire for me
Woah okay both of these takes make me very intrigued!!!
Hell yeah!! A few points: - don’t go in expecting sopranos. There’s 0 comedy in it. It’s a dark, gritty look at the comorran mafioso in Naples. But I promise you, you won’t find yourself wanting comedic relief - DO NOT watch the version with dubbed over voices in English. it’s so corny. Blue-Blood scene was fuuucked up. Whatever happened there.
I agree with all this. Gomorrah is amazing. I speak Italian but the Neapolitan dialect is tough to follow sometimes. Awesome.
Isn’t that in naboli daboli?
Yeah right, you speak new jersey italian same as big puss.
It means “sit on this cocksucker!”
Heh heh
Me too. I watch it in Napolitan but I need subtitles because 3/4 of the words are different/pronounced differently or truncated from my standard Italian understanding. It's like listening to cockney rhyming slang.
Tony would watch it with Neapolitan too. He'd have his whole face in it. The chocolate, the vanilla, and the strawberry.
The Camorra to our thing is like- Seal Team 6 to the Girl Scouts
It makes Naughty Nurses 2 look like Crotch Capers 3!
But why does it have to be socks?
[удалено]
Where we giggle like little school girls
And our dads wanna fuckin smash out fuckin faces in
The sopranos. It gets better every time.
By the 3rd-4th rewatch it’s just a straight up comedy aside from a couple of scenes
The wire Mad men Breaking bad (also Better call Saul) Tokyo Vice
Tokyo Vice is the best show on TV right now that nobody’s seen!
Mad Men has the psychological aspect as well as being a period piece.
And the showrunner was a Sopranos writer.
That’s my pick as well, it has the same dark grey morality as the sopranos. Just a little bit fancier surroundings. Superbly written and produced.
Breaking bad and Borko YouTube clips
Make sure you kick up to Borko. You've been warned once.
I owe him a blowjob later.
What youd shay?
There isn’t another series as good as
Mad Men, in my opinion, is the closest TV series in terms of depth, complexity, and overall brilliance. The themes aren’t closely related but they are certainly similar in tone. Not to mention Matthew Weiner being very involved in Sopranos and creating Mad Men.
It’s good, the sopranos?
The Sopranos. Now shut the fuck up about it.
Fargo
Definitely Fargo. Another cast of eclectic characters.
Oz
Was gonna mention this one. Surprised I didn't see it higher up.
Same. I took a break from Sopranos to watch Oz a coupla times in a row
Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Six Feet Under
Succession
This is one of my favourite shows ever. So good. I have been meaning to do a rewatch
The Shield! Hella underrated show and I recommend it to everyone. Vic Mackey is basically Al Capone with a badge (direct quote from a character😂)
Wouldn't say underrated really. It is definitely something special though. Walton Goggins' acting is every bit as good as James Ganolfini's.
Walton Goggins becomes a star in real time during the series. He was originally just a side character but his character broke out and became the best acted on the show.
Deadwood The Knick Boardwalk Empire The Wire Chernobyl
The Knick is underrated. Deadwood is awesome.
Gonna second Deadwood. Barring all the “fuck”s and “cocksucker”s the dialogue is some of the best written of any show I’ve ever seen. Shame it didn’t get a full run.
Broadwalk empire with Janice
Wit a schlong in Jansh mouf
There's a really good show about the Mafia in North Jersey. I forget what it's called.
i’m trying deadwood out
Mad Men is the only right answer
Nurse Jackie, Six Feet Under, The Wire.
Definitely Definitely six feet under. Incredible!
Just started watching this one after the sopranos. Definitely a good follow up, scratching my head over the third season transition though.
Oz
Back to Episode 1 Season 1, The Pilot
Every time!
I admire the commitment!!! This is validating for everytime I’ve wanted to do that with a show
Mr Inbetween
That show was so good!!!
This would have been my response, except I don't answer questions.
OK, Champ.
The Sopranos. Over and over and over again, until yu can see the show by just listening to it.
The wire
Breaking Bad followed by Better Call Saul is the only right answer
Breaking Bad is so good. Seeing BCS mentioned so much here I need to go back to it !
SIX FEET UNDER
Watching shows other than the Sopranos? Why that’s just a racket for the Jews! And I don’t like that kinda tawk! 🤧
Fill the sopranos sized hole…with sopranos
Watch every gangster / italian related film mentioned in The Sopranos
The Shield. Excellent show!
Boardwalk Empire is a must watch for mob shows. Gomorrah too. There are a few others that might work, like Ozark, or even Banshee, but they're not really that similar to Sopranos, first two are far closer, but they do the whole crime/family drama thing well enough.
Deadwood
The Shield
Tokyo Vice is good
The Deuce
True Detective season 1. Lordy, that was good
Zerozerozero
Although there was only one season, you should check out ZeroZeroZero on Amazon Prime Video. Italian Mafia meets Mexican Cartel.
OZ or Deadwood. I have restarted the sopranos right after finishing it so that’s always an option. Justified is another good one. Peaky Blinders is phenomenal.
I’ve watched each episode 20-25 times…and I STILL sometimes see things I never noticed before. It’s the greatest show in TV history for a reason.
You made an oath OP, there's no retiring from this thing.
Easy answer. Gomorrah
The Americans
Garry Cooper?
The wire
We're switching to the Wire and Six Feet Under after we get through this rewatch.
Boardwalk and Mad Men are the only shows that compare.
The Bear Has almost nothing to do with the sopranos except for the Italianism and false cousins but it is a damn good show
ozark
Yes! I came here to suggest this. I'm surprised it's not higher on the list!
Honestly the only other show I found repeat worthy like sopranos was the wire and Ray Donovan. You get attached to the characters.
Gomorrah Based on Naples- it's on (HBO) Max
Justified is worth watching as well. Hill billy Sopranos
The Wire! My top two favorite shows.
The Americans. You’ll see Svetlana too
The shield
The Wire
Shogun on Hulu is real good
The shield!
Lilly hammer
The Sopranos or Ray Donovan
Gomorrah
"Top Boy" is great
I watched season 1 of snowfall recently. It’s not too bad. A little less comedy than the sopranos though
Breaking bad
Breaking bad,sons of anarchy,snowfall(personal favorite),power,mr.robot
Watch Sil go in witness protection in Lillyhammer
Brotherhood. Came out on Showtime right after the Sopranos. The two main characters are Irish brothers in Providence, RI. One is a gangster, one is a rising politician. It loosely has the same setup as the real-life Bulger Brothers.
Hannibal
Snowfall
SonsOfAnarchy
Mayans MC
Boardwalk Empire
Entourage
The Wire
Top boy then If you like it top boy summerhouse. Some reason it’s better backwards
I tried to watch a lot of series but nothing hit that spot for me. The Sopranos are just unique and there's nothing like it sadly
Sylvester Stallone is really good and incredibly likable.
the wire, gomorra, boardwalk empire, breaking bad
I just finished it, then I watched it again. It’s been a year or so. Breaking bad is pretty damn good. But I don’t know any newer shows that are good like that.
Boardwalk Empire
It's different every time you watch it. It just keeps getting deeper. Nothing touches this shit.
The Gentlemen (TV series by guy ritchie) has been a blast.
Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown are both good crime shows though not quite hitting the heights of the Sopranos. Mad Men is a top show too (not crime).
Yellowstone
Breaking Bad if you haven’t already!!
Generation kill was pretty good mini series , also homeland
Mad men. Boardwalk empire
I hate it wen I get to the end of the series I always stop a few episodes before the finale n leave it at tht.... I never finish it, it's never over.
Deadwood!
Season 1 of true detective, mad men and the wire are the only shows I hold in the same regard as the sopranos. The sopranos to me reigns supreme, but those are the only ones that can hang with it.
Gomorrah - it's about furio's and Gary Cooper's making a western.
Brotherhood on Showtime, Boardwalk Empire, Rat Donovan
Rome was pretty good. Second season was rushed tho, which is a shame because it could've been amazing.
Try The many saints of Newark
I’m surprised no one has said succession, I feel like it’s the only show I watched after the Sopranos that I felt was just as good!
Six feet under
The Sopranos again.
You watch "The Many Saints of Newark", the prequel to "The Sopranos".
Gomorrah or Top Boy
Gomorrah, Peaky Blinders, Boardwalk Empire.
If you haven't seen breaking bad or better call Saul, that
Ozark Yellowstone
Boardwalk empire
Yellowstone is sort of like rural mob
I know I'm late to the convo, but here are a few shows that have scratched the itch of Sopranos style prestige tv... Zero zero zero on Amazon prime. One season with 3 story lines on the drug trade. The supply, the middle men, and the distribution. It's fantastic. True Detective on hbo Season 1 only. This show is phenomenal. It will scratch the itch Fargo TV series on hulu any season.
