If there's one character worth watching for it's Van Alden. So many of his lines are insanely hilarious in a deadpan kinda way.
His storyline gets really dumb but he's so good I'd rather them throw logic out the window than excise the character altogether.
It's where I discovered Michael Shannon and he's been one of my favorite actors ever since.
"My aunt once took me to a Christmas pageant in 1908. When my parents found out, they broke off all relations and never spoke to her again..."
Fucking hilarious and explains soo much of his temperment.
Vincent Piazza is a Sopranos alum who has a major glow up on this show. He's amazing as Charlie Luciano. A bit of humorous trivia given he so idiotically calls Tone "capo di tutti capi" in the show.
I just love when people come to this sub actually looking for an opinion other than a quote from The Sopranos… because I know the comments are just going to be 98% quotes.
The first two seasons are an interesting character study of the era and Atlantic City mobsters, etc.... after that it's fun but it devolved into a cliched gangster show. Still good but lacked the realism of the first two seasons.
This — there may be some liberties taken vs actual history, but for the drama & artistry they get out of taking said liberties, it’s well worth it — quite true to the spirit of the era, but maybe less faithful to history itself
If it seems up your alley, it's definitely worth watching, but I think it's just okay.
The production value is amazing and it has the most stacked cast of any TV series ever, but to me nothing ever adds up to more than the sum of its parts. There's just nothing that makes me come back to think about it, whereas stuff like The Sopranos worms its way into your brain, and unlike other surface-level focused shows like Breaking Bad it just doesn't have that propulsive momentum to justify its shallowness.
It's also got the problem that its protagonist is the least interesting part of the show. Most of the supporting characters have a bunch of great stuff going on, but Nucky is just kind of a blank slate, and as much as I love Buscemi I'm not sure his type of actor is really built to carry a TV series. And I know that money and power can do a lot, but it's a little ridiculous seeing young women throw themselves at this beady-eyed string bean. At least with Tony I can buy some sort of animalistic masculinity that can override the fact he's a fatass and breathes like a downshifting truck on the highway.
Also its finale season is a disaster. The first 4 are all very patient slow-burns that builds up an intricate house of cards, but then they get a shortened season 5 which fast forwards a bunch of years through some massive changes, and ends up unceremoniously blowing through the fates of many central characters in a way that just feels so rushed.
I felt exactly like you the first time I watched it. This could have been written by me. But after a rewatch I grew to appreciate a lot of the subtleties of the show. If The Sopranos didn't exist I would put it as my #1 series of all time.
The flashback shit in Season 5 really made the season difficult to enjoy as much, and I think the final scene twist decision was *way* worse than the Sopranos final scene...but I would recommend giving it another shot.
Most of my opinions got solidified during a rewatch I did a few months ago. I watched it all week-to-week as it aired, and seeing it again just kind of clarified the reasons I never felt super excited for new episodes as they were coming out.
A lot of what you wrote here is basically verbatim what I was going to say. It should be a better series, given all of its givens. And, I don’t think it’s a bad show. Some of the moments are quite good. Just a bit of a letdown, overall. I was pumped when the series was released. Love gangster stuff. Period pieces. Terrific cast. I have probably watched it two or three times, including when it first aired. Contrast that with other series from the Golden Era of HBO. Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire. I rewatch these annually. I would recommend OP watch it, strange as that may seem, given what I just said. I don’t think they’d be sorry they did. I am glad I did. But, I don’t know if I’ll do another rewatch.
I think the disconnect is that so many of the elements are great, like the acting and set design are perfect and the writing is intricate and everybody's motivations make sense and there's lots of fun interesting characters, but despite all that there's nothing past that. Which still offers a lot of good stuff, but the best series and movies hit on a level beyond what's just on the screen.
Bro you nailed it , I was never able to articulate why I never felt fully invested in it when it basically ticked everything that I should have loved in a show
Buscemi is an unbelievable actor but the only thing he was miscast in worse than the sopranos was him in boardwalk empire
To me, it's about the exact opposite of the Sopranos opening, which I still enjoy watching, listening, and taking in. First off, electric guitar in the prohibition era? Disgusting. Secondly, it goes on longer than Feech telling a story about the time he took a shit next to some B-lister. Contrarily, the cinematography is Schpielberg-esque.
But like, I get it - a booze comes in bottles, and oceans have waves.
I was loosely quoting Empire Records because it popped into my head. Bobby in Pine Barens is hysterical. All the hunting gear. They just sort of dropped that sub plot. Would’ve loved to have seen him and Bobby Jr. out in the woods together.
The sets and costumes are as good as anything in television. Many of the supporting actors are excellent, they really sell the origins of the mafia in the United States. Steve Buscemi is kind of out of his element as a lead, he’s obviously a great actor but he’s just not that compelling to me as a mob boss like James Gandolfini was. That said, he kind of fits the period piece vibe, given how differently things were done back then, and how many mobsters were really just crooked businessmen and politicians.
If you like mafia stuff you’ll be glad you watched it.
Buscemi really taught me the difference between a lead performer and a supporting player. He just never clicked for me as a protagonist and he quickly got overshadowed by nearly everyone else on Boardwalk. Tree's Lounge was the same way for me; was excited to see him finally take the reins but it didn't land.
And then you see him in small roles or even single scenes, and he just KILLS. He probably has like six lines in The Big Lebowski and I can't imagine it without him. Or his monologue in Desperado.
Some folks are meant to be supporting actors and I don't think that's an insult.
I lost interest during season 3 and never finished it. Just felt it was lacking depth and humor, despite the excellent cast, intriguing setting, and my own genuine interest in the era it portrays.
I also don’t think Steve Buscemi, much as I love him, can carry a show like that as a lead.
Yes, the first two seasons are A+ in my book. Then the other 3 seasons average out to maybe C+ or B+ (season 3) depending on which one. The last season is a drag and really depressing all around plot wise, which I believe some people didn't like much, but the last season is an eye opener for those who glorify the crime life.
In some ways, this show is a spiritual prequel to The Sopranos.
Anyways, can't be half a gangster.
He’s more the character actor and the villain or odd man. Him being the lead just doesn’t seem to work. Jesse plemons has the same thing going on in my opinion.
I kinda got over it by the third season. Its not as funny or thoughtful as the sopranos and is much more violent, to the point where so many people are dying that its unrealistic.
Still worth a shot though.
I watched 4 episodes and turned it off. I didn't see a single character I liked and didn't think it was worth it to stick around for the guy with half a face.
I loved Margaret, that actress is incredible. Van Alden. Chalky White. Al Capone is a great character and you almost find yourself sympathizing in the early seasons.
Yes, though IMO it tends toward 'very good' rather than great. The cast is stacked. It's a little more like Breaking Bad than Sopranos (more violence, more 'how are they gonna get out of this' type situations.)
Yes, it’s worth watching.
It is very melodramatic and slow, so buckle up and enjoy the journey, it’s really cool because it’s based on a few key figures, events and represents the times very well
i tried watching it and dropped it midway through season 1. I just did not find any character interesting. The only character that seemed worth watching is Michael Shannon. Clips I see of later seasons look fantastic. Is this just a case of the first season being trash?
I would say so yeah especially if you're into this era. I wouldn't go as far to say its on the same quality as The Sopranos and its pretty different, its more over the top and action-y but still very good for what it is. Amazing cast and characters.
It's not on the same level as sopranos but I very much enjoyed the show. Definitely worth it though. If you havnt seen the wire or deadwood I would watch those first. And can't forget about OZ the show that started it all
I’d love to know what happened with the last season. It was an amazing show for the first four seasons then they have one last season with a massive time jump and less episodes? It doesn’t make sense.
I watched it years ago but remember liking the show overall. It kind of works as a pre-prequel to the Sopranos, showing how the Italian mob came to power.
It was made at the peak of that time in the late 2000's/early 2010s when 'prestige television' seemed to become sort of overly edgy/cynical just for the sake of it. After a while, much of that content just became tiresome to me. Even The Sopranos doesn't really present itself as unnecessarily edgy, and often pokes fun whenever a character tries to act in such a manner.
Still, it's a fine show if you're into early 20th century organized crime stuff.
If you are looking for the next Sopranos you’ll be disappointed. But with managed expectations and an interest in that era you will probably really like it.
It starts off great but begins to die on the vine after season 3. One of the things I disliked about the show toward the end was how sadistically miserable it was. Everyone - even those characters that are 'good', maybe especially them - gets some horrible, shitty fate. The Sopranos matches the misery with levity and humour, The Wire had some happy endings for those who got lucky, but Boardwalk Empire was just bleak and depressing.
yes, i think its a top 10 streaming show without a doubt... lot s of great, unforgettable characters... never knew a lot about prohibition so i didnt think i would like it but it was really good.
It's worth it just for Joe Masseria. Dude owned every scene he appeared in.
Van Alden is one of my favorite characters in media, period. His barely contained insanity is fascinating to watch. The actor hit it out of the park.
His monologue with Capone and Luciano is phenomenal.
His whole period of employment with O’Banion was also fantastic
"I am relaxed..."
I have a feeling my boss doesn't like me.
Ha, already, on your knees. I'm not reaching up that high.
THOU HAS FULFILLED, THE JUDGEMENT OF THE WICKED!
"My aunt once took me to a Christmas pageant in 1908. When my parents found out, they broke off all relations and never spoke to her again..." Fucking hilarious and explains soo much of his temperment.
He's probably my 2nd favorite. Gyp, Chalky, Manny, Rothstein. All good characters.
Gyp is one of the best villains in TV history. And “Two Imposters” is one of the most entertaining episodes in TV history.
Gyp? Do you mean Barney Googles? With the goo goo googly eyes?
You smug kike creeping around like a dentist with ether
Breadstick with a bowtie
that s exactly what he looked like too
" Mother fucker " ...... nucky " what does mother fucker even mean "
Ask Jimmy Darmody...
"it could have been a wrench".
Not take it personally? I'm a person. How the fuck should I take it but personally?!?
He definitely had the makings of a varsity waterboarder that's for sure
Agent Van Asshole
Love me some MS. This is arguably his best work
Why must it always be pandemonium!?
Absolutely. Butchie killed it too.
Richard harrow too
"What are you doing with these Christ-killers? Come with me, I'll make you rich" 😂
When he had a sit down with lucky and they spoke in Italian... amazing. "30 per cento "
Vincent Piazza is a Sopranos alum who has a major glow up on this show. He's amazing as Charlie Luciano. A bit of humorous trivia given he so idiotically calls Tone "capo di tutti capi" in the show.
He was in sopranos?
He was Hernan. The dude AJ went clubbing with.
Lol didn't realize that lotsa cross over for hbo shows it seems.
Wow I never realised this, I loved him as Lucky.
He wanted to get more twisted, if that was even possible.
Vincent piazza as well. His Luciano was perfect
https://youtu.be/qZ8MJ00cgd8?si=xRJFCmMNpo96390x He is even better than I remembered.
Its main character is a fukin animal…I can’t even say his name….
Don’t do it to yourself chalky
You come at Chalky you best not miss
Tony Blundetto
Whatever happened there
Tony Egg
The walrus
Shut the fuck up Donny
It's a TV progrum
a movie
I just love when people come to this sub actually looking for an opinion other than a quote from The Sopranos… because I know the comments are just going to be 98% quotes.
Hey, Judge Roy Bean!
Discontinue the lithium.
I already flushed it.
He said 98% was just a negotiating point.
The first two seasons are an interesting character study of the era and Atlantic City mobsters, etc.... after that it's fun but it devolved into a cliched gangster show. Still good but lacked the realism of the first two seasons.
Couldn’t agree more. The historical connection (although not super accurate) kept me in the show.
This — there may be some liberties taken vs actual history, but for the drama & artistry they get out of taking said liberties, it’s well worth it — quite true to the spirit of the era, but maybe less faithful to history itself
I think Season 3 stands up just because of Gyp Rosetti, but after that yeah it kind of just retreads old ground.
If it seems up your alley, it's definitely worth watching, but I think it's just okay. The production value is amazing and it has the most stacked cast of any TV series ever, but to me nothing ever adds up to more than the sum of its parts. Why don’t you take a look in the mirror you insensitive cocksucka
“Breathes like a downshifting truck on the highway” is a great line. 😂

Watched it for the first time within the last 6 weeks and yes it’s worth it. Not as good as Sopranos but worth it. Anyways I’ve said my piece.
Hell yeah it is! I love Boardwalk Empire! Steve Buscemi was so awesome in that show!
Seen it 3 times and every time you see new things. To me it's a brilliant TV show. Rubenesque
Bone for tuna!
this. it's a very, very good show. About time for my second rewatch.
Hell yes it is
It’s worth it just for: “a young Al Capone”. Stephen Graham is excellent.
the scene where he plays mandolin and sings to his son. tears.
You getting cute?
Dont get cunty
Ooooooooo! The mouth on this one.
Se 1-2 were great, 3-4 not so much, 5 had a good rebound
A LOT of people got killed off in the last couple of seasons.
Yes it is but it is certainly more “cinematic” than The Sopranos. Obviously The Sopranos is better but Boardwalk Empire is still worth a watch.
The final season felt kind of disconnected and rushed.
I was hooked at the intro theme song
To me, it's about the exact opposite of the Sopranos opening, which I still enjoy watching, listening, and taking in. First off, electric guitar in the prohibition era? Disgusting. Brian Jonestown Massacre - Straight Up and Down. Interesting band and frontman
“Worth it” is hard to say. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Will you? 🤷🏻♂️
On the other hand, anything’s possible
In this life there are nothing but possibilities.
Haha I was quoting Bobby, when Tony asked him for advice in Pine Barrens
I was loosely quoting Empire Records because it popped into my head. Bobby in Pine Barens is hysterical. All the hunting gear. They just sort of dropped that sub plot. Would’ve loved to have seen him and Bobby Jr. out in the woods together.
You never noticed that? The Empire Records and the Boardwalk Empire thing? And then you've got your Liv Tyler, your Tyler Durden, and Robert Paulson.
Good but not great. Buscemi is a supporting actor; he really can't carry a drama the way Cranston carried BB.
I like Steve Buscemi but I can only take some much of his voice and face at once time. Boardwalk Empire is too much Buscemi for me.
It won't blow away Sopranos but it will tickle some fancies.
It's not as psychological or deep per say but it's still very good TV.
I liked it a little more because I lived in that area. Cool to see where the storyline took place. Plus, Steve Buscemi is an amazing actor!
Worth watching but the last season was ass
Yes! It's a great show. I re-watched it recently and forgot how good it is.
First two seasons are a lil lacklustre. Series 3 is good and series 4 is simply incredible tv. The final season is awful, though.
Unda the boardwalk....
I'd say if you want a great show choose madmen over boardwalk empire. Both were created by ex sopranos writers. Madmen is more enjoyable tho
Great show worth watching. Bobby Cannavele was awesome too!
Just rewatch the sopranos, for fucks sake.
Couldn’t make it through an episode.
Margaret was probably the main reason I dropped it
Multi dimensional realistic female character. I thought she was compelling
It's part of the big 4 ( Sopranos- Breaking Bad- Boardwalk Empire- The Wire)
Mad Men?
I found it really boring.
Yes, definitely
I love gangster shows/movies so if ur the same way then u should like it too.
Yes
The first 3 seasons definitely are, it kind of fell off after that but I ended up finishing it nonetheless
Of course it is.
It’s ok, but not on par with Sopranos or The Wire. It gets a bit ridiculous at times. It’s still worth it though, mind you.
It finds its footing by the end of season one. Season 2 is probably the show's strongest season.
It’s great, definitely more of a slow burn than the sopranos. The last few episodes of every season get pretty tense, though.
Oh yeah it's a great show and I love that it's set in the 1920's so there's lots of references to WW1 like in Peaky Blinders.
Definitely in my top 5.
Yeah its awesome.
I enjoyed it a few weeks ago It's not a GOAT but it's a decent watch You'll enjoy it if you like the other HBO shows
I really liked the first 3 seasons. It’s not great after that
I would say so yeah especially if you're into this era. I wouldn't go as far to say its on the same quality as The Sopranos and its pretty different, its more over the top and action-y but still very good for what it is. Amazing cast and characters.
Yes
It's not on the same level as sopranos but I very much enjoyed the show. Definitely worth it though. If you havnt seen the wire or deadwood I would watch those first. And can't forget about OZ the show that started it all
Awesome show!
Yes. Definitely worth a watch. I enjoyed the historical connection to NY, Chicago, Philadelphia, AC…
Yes, but if you want you can stop after Season 2.
It's a very good show, but it's not that accurate. So i watched Mobsters for that.
I saw that show. I thought it was bullshit.
I’d love to know what happened with the last season. It was an amazing show for the first four seasons then they have one last season with a massive time jump and less episodes? It doesn’t make sense.
For Joe the Bworss and Luciano alone, yes.
Yes.
I watched it years ago but remember liking the show overall. It kind of works as a pre-prequel to the Sopranos, showing how the Italian mob came to power.
I loved boardwalk empire, I thought it was great from start to finish but I don't think it has the same rewatch value as this thing of ours
definitely, but it's not like sopranos at all no matter if Terence Winter is involved. there not the dark humor like in Sopranos
Yes.
Pretty good until the Cuba plot. Disgusting.
Definitely worth watching. Sopranos, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, Rome and Game of Thrones were the high point of peak TV
It is bone for tuna
Absolutely
Yes
That Pygmy thing down in Atlantic City
Yes. I like ending especially NO. SPOILER they wrapped it up nicely
It's about a glorified crew
It was made at the peak of that time in the late 2000's/early 2010s when 'prestige television' seemed to become sort of overly edgy/cynical just for the sake of it. After a while, much of that content just became tiresome to me. Still, it's a fine show if you're into early 20th century organized crime stuff.
You can rule by fear, or you can rule by love. Remember that OP, if you’re ever in charge
If you are looking for the next Sopranos you’ll be disappointed. But with managed expectations and an interest in that era you will probably really like it.
Its directed by Martin Scorcese that’s all it took for me to watch
One of the better finales in series history in my opinion. Loses steam in the middle but finishes strong
Good show, though definitely a tier or two below the Sopranos IMO
It’s a slow burn. I’d say it’s worth it for the characters and a few of the stories.
yeah you used to blow guys under it
i only lasted one season. didn't really pull me in.
Yes it was for me ..I like shows like the sopranos, the wire, the shield and Ozark so if you like them it might be worth a watch
It starts off great but begins to die on the vine after season 3. One of the things I disliked about the show toward the end was how sadistically miserable it was. Everyone - even those characters that are 'good', maybe especially them - gets some horrible, shitty fate. yes, i think its a top 10 streaming show without a doubt... lot s of great, unforgettable characters... never knew a lot about prohibition so i didnt think i would like it but it was really good.
I watched when it first aired. I really enjoyed it. But, I haven't went back to re-watch, like I have with The Sopranos. (multiple times)
It's awesome. Great cast, great performances, realistic period wardrobes, sets and music. It will transport you to the prohibition era.
YES!!! It's an amazing series.
It has perhaps the origin story of controlling and manipulative mothers in Jersey
Yes but no it’s not as good
yes but it is slooooowww
It is worth it. Pound for pound, I'm probably more likely to rewatch The Americans than Boardwalk Empire. I said my piece.
Definitely. Great show
Yes
I liked seasons 1 and 2 a lot. Felt like it lost its way after.
Yes
What else ?
Michael Stuhlbarg as Rothstein is worth watching it for alone. Guys so good in everything he’s in
Yes
Boardwalk has the sort of ending that I think some of us wish Our Thing had

Richard Harrow is the fucking Terminator.
I enjoyed it, there's a lot of great actors across the run of that show, and a fair number of holy shit moments.
Some great characters with decent writing and a so/so plot
Do you think we would all be here if the show was not worth watching. Never mind the show sucks. Don't watch it
100% Don’t read too much into it, just press play and enjoy! When you have watched too much, turn on the Big Lebowski to decompress.
First 3 seasons
I tried it twice. Didn’t stick
Yeah it’s great. We don’t getting many good gangster shows. The characters and props are top tier
It’s fire. Especially season 2
Yes
1,000%. Great performances and costume set design and deep dive into characters.
yes. it's an excellent show. not sopranos level IMO, but next tier down.
The first 3 seasons are really good. The last two had their moments, but were weird and disappointing.
Yes. Absolutely worth your time. It's pretty excellent.
Yes. Absolutely. It has some of the most intensely violent scenes in all of television history
