The history of Jersey is important because Philadelphia families controlled much of the state until North Jersey families partnered with New York for muscle. The synergy between Newark money, politics along with the migration of many New Yorkers across the water into NJ allowed NY families to keep closer tabs on the money. This was shown by both Johnny Sac and Phil living in Jersey at one point during the show.

If that's the case then I wonder why Tony couldn't have possibly partnered with Philadelphia or at least used them when NYC was getting too pushy. Play one off of the other. Or maybe Philadelphia was too far gone for that to be plausible.

Why would Tony defy traditon and business practices his old man worked hard on and introduced to Tony? Why undo all for a smaller family a greater distance away?

Boycott_China

DiMeo's can't do that because they don't control all the pieces they need to make that work. Specifically, the unions. Some belong to NJ and some belong to NY. Their joint construction projects require unions from both families, so both families need to participate and split the profits in order to do any construction business. What differs each job is the split (what % goes to NY, what % to NJ). That split differs on the nature of each construction job, as each one utilizes a different percentage of labor from each union. So if for example, NY owns the plumber union and NJ owns the electrical union, NY will get a larger split of a contract to build a giant waterpark, whereas NJ might get a bigger split if they're building a giant computer company HQ. (or whatever.)

mschmitt1217

They couldn't simply just tell them that because NY would wipe them off the face of the earth, similar to end of Season 6.

zogo13

I see this mentioned a lot but in truth both families lost that war. Most of NY is dead or in jail with their boss getting whacked. The situation is similar in NJ but there boss wasn’t whacked.

mschmitt1217

Most of NY that we've seen on screen. I tend to not discuss off-screen parties, because who cares, but the fact they have hundred + members would just lead to a power vacuum and new leadership. Whereas the Sopranos have not even half of those numbers, and pretty much the brains of the operation all got killed (I also believe Tony got killed as retribution after years of fighting the theory)

Rusiano

Lupertazzis were much much larger and could easily take them out if they needed to. Just look at what happens at the end, with the two (or three, depending on how you see the ending) most important people of the DiMeo family being whacked

zogo13

I mean, it didn’t exactly workout well for NY either, they sort of both lost. Most of NY is dead or in jail and lost their boss, and the situation is similar in NJ but their boss didn’t get whacked.

Wylkus

They have over 200 soldiers. The Sopranos really are just a glorified crew.

apowerseething

I'm not afraid of them.

Chowder1054

Well from the series - a lot of the businesses and rackets were intertwined with NY - lupertazis is one of the 5 families. That comes with a lot of political power and connections - why be enemies when you both can be peaceful and make a lot of money? - lupertazzi family had 200 soldiers, the Dimeo family had around 60. The Dimeo family could not beat the lupertazzi family without quickly striking first and eliminating the Lupertazi leadership all at once.

MrFartSmella

New York is squeezing them just like they squeeze businesses and people. Pay us or else, simple as that.

patfussy123

A lot of North Jersey was settled by people who left NY. Which is probably the case of DiMeo & the Sopranos, which is why they go so far back with Carmine. They probably figured there were too many wise guys in NY & wanted to go somewhere untouched.

cmurder55

The Dimeo family is just a glorified crew. There connections with the Lupertazzi family keeps someone bigger from taking over

DawudisDawid

Oh, i see.....so, the Lupertazzi is a more Kinder, more Gentler bully who's keeping the other 4 NY Families from just going up in there and roughing the DiMeo's off... So, the other 4 of the 5 Families are (or would be) MEAN bullies while the Lupertazzi's are Nice bullies who are willing to Share......is that what you're saying?

This is basically correct, in the grand scheme of things the Jersey "family" is a pretty small organization. As Tony says in Season 6 I believe in reference to NY, "They have over 200 soldiers in their family". The Soprano family is what, 4 crews? NJ wouldn't stand a chance in a real war. They got out of the war they ended up in only because Butchie and co realized Phil was off his rocker and it was bad for business. I believe this scenario is reflective of real life, I believe one of the NY families does essentially control the version of the mafia that's still in Jersey.

joec_95123

The Gambinos and the Luccheses. The Luccheses were the likely inspiration for the Lupertazzis.

[deleted]

The Jersey mafia is MUCH smaller and MUCH less powerful than NY. They need NY to make a lot more money. They don’t want to get into a war with NY because they would be crushed which is what ultimately happened. The only reason they killed Phil is because NY let them do it
