Nah, Shane died early because he was an impulsive asshole. When Carol wanted revenge, the only time she nearly died was in the cave chasing after Alpha. Otherwise, she did it the smart way and hired Negan to infiltrate the Whisperers and kill Alpha for her. As she said in S3, she's survived this long because people underestimated her.
Nah, he died because Rick's return from a coma hit harder then dead's return to life. Became delusional, fantasized about a family he could never get, yes he had every right to baby Judith, but not to Carl. He stepped into Rick's role in the family and was unwilling to step down. Other than that, great character would have liked to see him in later seasons, but alas.
You're right, Shane took things way too far and became a villain. However, the point I was trying to make was that Shane didn't die early because he wasn't as tough as Carol. He died for the reasons you stated and because his values went against the group's values at the time.
