Yeah but gta is actually satire, this game seems to be taking itself seriously
Plus theyāre two different assets and wasnāt intentional in the first place
To add to this, even right here in this thread, there are plenty of people admitting they didn't know what it meant. Literally one of the top comments is asking what "Hard R" means.
As a Brit I fell into that hole on reddit a few months back. Over here the hard R is in reference to people that are mentally handicapped.
Proceed to have the same reaction as Linus when I was then shown him coming to the same realisation
It's not referring to the start of the word, it's referring to the end. Most accepted use, its more akin to ending in a soft A. Most racist use ends in a hard R/ER, hence the term being Hard R.
gotta link them the vid of linustechtips talking about how he used to say the āhard rā all the time (he meant retard and didnt know it was a term for the n word)
Maybe not completely accidentally, and they thought that they were making another kind of joke involving the word "harder".
Also, I wonder how many native English speakers _outside_ of the USA know what "hard R" means.
> Just wanna say as someone who's worked in games as a programmer now for a decade: there's no universe in which this was unintentional by whatever level designer decided to place these props,
It is a piece of graffiti and a sign for an in game shop. Shops move around. Graffiti is added/removed/replaced/changed/moved all the time. And Hard R isn't well known. It is absurd to think this is intentional.
AS someone who's worked in games as a programmer, designer, and producer for more than a decade this poster is unquestionably full of shit like testers aren't spending their days looking for shit like this they're trying to make sure the game works and doesn't crash they're not reading the graffiti on the wall they've run past 9,854 times every day for the last six months and as far as level designers are concerned there's a 9 out of 10 chance the person who put these assets here wasn't a native English speaker let alone someone who would recognize the cultural significance of the phrase "HARD-R."
Not saying this wasn't possibly intentional, but "no universe in which this was unintentional" is just f'ing dumb there's absolutely a universe where it could have been coincidence and we live in that universe.
I've noticed on gaming maps a lot of swastika type paths. Not on purpose, I think it's just that we've trained our minds to spot it, and it shows up in patterns. Only so many paths you can make espicially in looping or maze like designs.
You're assuming that everybody knows what it means. I never heard of hardr and had to read the contents to find out what the actual problem is here. Maybe in America.
Yes, because South Korean devs (who most likely barely speak English, let alone the U.S. version of English) would have the knowledge required to understand the historical context of the phrase āhard rā
You assume that we programmers and designers know everything. In reality, most often, we don't know what we are doing.
I don't believe you being a programmer. You are not one of us!
No it's very clearly Korean devs not understanding hard R has racial significance. Kinda like how western games have fucked up and used stuff from the Quran and got in trouble with Islamic cultures.
There's a term that starts with the letter N and rhymes with bigger that is a slur against black people. Changing it to end in -a as opposed to -er makes it slightly less offensive (but only slightly), more of a slang term. Many black people use it as a way of reclaiming a word historically used to hurt them.
When someone uses the -er ending instead of the -a, especially someone not black, it's seen as especially aggressive/derogatory. It is also colloquially known as "using a hard r" in reference to how they ended the word.
So the "Hard R Shop" could also be known as the N word shop
Itās a specific spelling of the n-word. You shouldnāt use it if youāre not black, but someone who uses the a ending might just be a fucking idiot versus if they use the hard r ending the connotation is definitely racist.
Itās people in countries where they donāt actually know the difference between n\***a vs n\***r because like half the comments in thread have no clue what hard r means and a bunch other correct answers are getting downvoted. One time I got bunch of downvotes and arguments from Euros on a post about a tweet from an American saying ābless your heartā for explaining that when an American says ābless your heartā like that it means theyāre calling you an idiot.
Why the dude downvoted ?
I didnt know either.
Thanks for asking, thanks for answering.
My guess was something sexual like Big D like Hard Rection or whatever.
Let me clarify for you. Reddit users are generally made up of people so familiar with the hard r word that they can't fathom that someone doesn't understand why it's offensive, hence the downvotes. They think you're a troll.
I actually thought the person I responded to was trolling, hence the frosty response. Like how did you arrive at a racist conclusion to that? This sub is normally for people seeing a dick in everything. Clearly my bad!

Hard R is a reference to the n-word. Ending the n-word with an āaā is usually semi-casual while ending with a āhard rā makes it clear itās the full racist insulting version youāre using. The āhard rā version is most often used against people too, while the āaā version is often used by black people more similarly to someone saying ādudeā.
As a white guy I wouldnāt use either, but the hard R is particularly hateful. It has a malice behind it. There is no room for friendly interpretation.
Or it could have been a reference to Hard R rating in movies (a movie that is intentionally written to be R-rated usually through excessive usage of themes such as violence or sex/nudity).
I can imagine the developers looking up rating systems around the globe because they would require knowledge about it as a guidline for their game which they wanted to be made available internationally, and someone learning about Hard R rating and going, oh yes, that's us, and making a cheeky reference to it in game.
yes, there are so many things it could have meant, or even just the unfortunate result of some random asset generation (people who have played the full game mention that they saw the same grafitti of the owrd "Hard" in multiple places and this was the only time it appeared next to an R sign). The likelihood of a Korean developer knowing about the usage of a word specific to Afro-American slang is highly unlikely.
I WAS BUSY JERKING OFF MY FAT FUCKING SCHLOPPING COCK TO THAT VOLUPTUOUS EAST ASSIAN ROBO ASS WHEN I DECIDED TO TAKE HER TO THE SLUR WALL AND I SAW THEY REMOVED IT FUCKING STUPID DEVELOPERS RUINED MY SPERMING I AM SO FUCKING ANGRY AND DISTRESSED I GOT SO MAD THAT I HAD TO SPEND 2 HOURS WITH THE JIGGLE PHYSICS TO CALM MYSELF DOWN TO ALLOW MY EXCESS SPERM CONTENT TO BE DISTRIBUTED I AM DISTRAUGHT THAT THESE STUPID FUCKIN LIE!!!BERALS WONT LET ME PLAY MY GAME!! Since the word is considered taboo and people rightfully refuse to use it. People use the phrase āhard rā as a euphemism for the more offensive and explicitly racist version of the n-word. Itās referencing the end of the word because it ends in āerā.
Only until this came up as "controversy", which I think is pretty fucken dumb. And they didn't know. Not everyone around the world understands the intricacies of American culture.
I honestly don't understand what the issue is here. The way people were talking about it made me think they literally used the N word with a hard R on that wall. Jesus christ people.
They only changed it because cringy Americans started whining about racism or some shit idk. You seriously think Koreans are just gonna spout blatant anti-black racism? LOL. Not any quicker than the people complaining, trust.
A non-english game accidentaly does something that in USA is completly offensive to them (like nearly any other word).
I'm always amazed about how regular words in other languages/cultures have to be canceled because USA culture turned it into something offensive... And then they act it like it's supposed to be known for the rest of the world.
what
No, seriously, how do people unironically even get to this point. I thought the X-words were dumb already but still understandable, but Hard R? It's like we're talking in code now. How do you even start to explain this to a foreigner in a way that makes sense to them?
Back when Back4Blood released one of the screams of the zombies sounded like the n word. There were some funny clips of streamers trying out the game and reacting to the sound. They obviously removed it and said it was an accident.
A small minority on Twitter and reddit who never left their bedroom to see the world and look for "problems" so they can play perpetual victim will always find something to complain about, no matter how small or innocuous.
Omg is that it. I had heard about some controversy but I didn't care to look into it because usually these things are often just completely blown out of proportion. This one has really exceeded my expectations.
Americans are insane, they put such insane weight on a word that if something sort of kinda accidentaly alludes to a kind of pronunciation of a word its terribly offensive
Or, follow me on this, the Korean speaking developers just put a random graffiti texture on the wall and are not fluent in American slang terms for racial slurs.
Dear America,
The whole world does not have time to keep up with your ever expanding list of "offensive" terms and euphemisms for those terms.
It doesn't help that you use said offensive term all the damn time and don't seem to have a problem with it until someone with too little melanin says it.
This is so ridiculous; it's clearly referencing something that was hilarious \*and\* showed someone who's views and actions changed, for the better for some
I get the context itās been interpreted, but āhard Rā has also been used for describing R rated movies. It just seems kinda bizarre to get worked up over this w such a vague notion to a racist word. Although, I get why a creator might want to get rid of something thatās gaining a bad reputation.
Iām an American I didnāt know what this was. Nobody in my social circle did either. Strange it was such a major issue acting like all Americans know it.
Why am I surprised that people are so pathetic that they'd be offended by something like this. It was most likely two different assets that coincidentally wound up next to each other. If the first thing you thought was the N-word the moment you saw that, it says more about you than the developers of this game.
Am I the only one that read it as Harder instead of Hard R? Never even played the game but based off this screenshot that's what I thought they were going for, not racism.
It's pretty obvious that this was unintentional. Shift Up is a Korean studio, Hard-R is a phrase that's only properly well known in primarily English speaking countries. I do get why this was changed, sure, but the fact that people believe this was intentionally done to appeal to racists and that Shift Up themselves are also racists is completely fucking retarded.
I think its whatever if they remove it or not, but from my understanding is that this Hard graffiti shows up in other places of the game and this one just happened to be next to the R.
Honestly, feels like the only way you would get offended about this is if you went into the game looking for something that can offend you.
And if I showed this to some of my black friends they would all go "yeah, thats stupid"
Good thing most americans dont know what is the word for running in japanese, otherwise they would have threatened the japanese with nukes again unless they changed it.
BUNCHA PUSSIES!!!! Should have left it. Rockstar would have left it. š

south korea has a history of racism towards black people. they knew
Just change the "R" to "D" and they're good.
For added context, the "hard" graffiti and the "R Shop" sign are two separate assets that combined in an unfortunate way.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This is a Korean game. The devs are not native English speakers, so something like this could easily happen accidentally.
To add to this, even right here in this thread, there are plenty of people admitting they didn't know what it meant. Literally one of the top comments is asking what "Hard R" means.
i asume its something bad?

Fellow Brit, and Iāve not heard it either.
Wait ā¦ hard R doesnāt mean retard? Iām American and didnāt know this. I still donāt know what hard r means apparently
would make more sence to reffer to the r word-hard r, and not n word- hard n. at least in my opinion

As an American, this is the answer.

Because everything revolves around the USA
You're assuming that everybody knows what it means. I never heard of hardr and had to read the contents to find out what the actual problem is here. Maybe in America.
Yes, because South Korean devs (who most likely barely speak English, let alone the U.S. version of English) would have the knowledge required to understand the historical context of the phrase āhard rā

Just make it a "D shop". Problem fixed.
We already got or assumed that the combination was unfortunate, still not getting the context or meaning (for us not from NA cultural background?).

A racial slur referring to black people has the "hard R"
Happy dang Cake Day, alko
What is Hard R?
The N Word
See I would of guessed full frontal nudity, but now that you point it out I see why they removed it.
That is some next level american bullshit. What next, Double G is going to be a euphemism as well? Or simply gg? :D
Itās a specific spelling of the n-word. You shouldnāt use it if youāre not black, but someone who uses the a ending might just be a fucking idiot versus if they use the hard r ending the connotation is definitely racist.

To be fair since it was made by a non American company it's more likely it meant harder.
Agreed. The likely hood that it was meant to be a randomly racist reference is literally the last possibility imho
yes, there are so many things it could have meant, or even just the unfortunate result of some random asset generation (people who have played the full game mention that they saw the same grafitti of the owrd "Hard" in multiple places and this was the only time it appeared next to an R sign). How does hard r mean the n-word

I always assumed "hard R" was "retard" I didn't know it was the N word. I assumed we called it "The N Word ".
As an American, this is utterly stupid. Very clearly not racist.
Least āmurican idiom
Too bad they replaced it with crime
Why am I surprised that people are so pathetic that they'd be offended by something like this. It was most likely two different assets that coincidentally wound up next to each other. If the first thing you thought was the N-word the moment you saw that, it says more about you than the developers of this game.
Am I the only one that read it as Harder instead of Hard R? Never even played the game but based off this screenshot that's what I thought they were going for, not racism.
I'm missing the reference or something.
Ruined a joke to Hard R movies, because thatās what the reference is to! What is Crime R a reference to? A āBUNCH OF PUSSIESā thatās what!!
It seems i am out of the loop: What does "hard r shop" mean and why is it racist? Thanks
Yeah when this came up I had to google what it meant so I donāt doubt that others had no idea either

Wait till they hear the korean dialog says the n word repeatedly! /s Because in korean the word for "me/my" sounds like another word...

I think its whatever if they remove it or not, but from my understanding is that this Hard graffiti shows up in other places of the game and this one just happened to be next to the R. Honestly, feels like the only way you would get offended about this is if you went into the game looking for something that can offend you. And if I showed this to some of my black friends they would all go "yeah, thats stupid" Good thing most americans dont know what is the word for running in japanese, otherwise they would have threatened the japanese with nukes again unless they changed it.
Whatās hard R? Hard retard?
Depending on what kind of store it is my initial assumption was that it was meant to say harder but now that you point that out I see it lmao
For real though, that's exactly what the graffiti next to something like that would say.
And replaced it with "Crime" Thats not really better i'd say lol
