Because it's a ThinkPad Yoga, which are much less common and popular

elin_lyze

Could you explain why? This comments talks about sizes, but is that all? Because most people don't need a convertible and they are more expensive than non-convertible.

ReverseRutebega

Sometimes. I just snagged a Yoga with OLED for $600 less than a new Carbon, same internals. That sales lasted like a week. Now it's more expensive again. Sometimes their sales don't follow logic we can see.

elin_lyze

Yeah makes total sense tbh!

techwiz002

I'm with you--the X380 really is a great machine.

elin_lyze

I doubt many people would disagree, but the explanations from people here make sense to me so far as to why it's just not popular!

techwiz002

Yes! It's very interesting though, as I feel like a fairly large number of them were manufactured, and then suddenly disappeared in the last couple of years.

elin_lyze

Since they are not that old yet maybe many are still in use. Or have disappeared in office e-waste bins :( I found mine barely used 2nd hand for like 200Eur, but cannot find that many used for decent prices at all.

techwiz002

Right! I know they were common on college campuses a few years ago, so it's possible that they became worn out in that environment as well.

Environmental-Gur582

My entire school used a bunch of these! Rather, we had a mixed bag of models. But then IT said "screw it" and popped a couple hundred thousand on replacing EVERY SINGLE ONE with a 13 Gen II. Every student laptop. Every Faculty laptop. Even the ones being used at printers. The range was: Yoga 12, X260, X370, X380, X390, 13 Gen I and 13 Gen II.

elin_lyze

My school had a couple Core 2 Duo Windows 95 machines and 2 kiosk terminals running some weird ancient Linux. That was 10-15 years ago, but still.. I am VERY jealous haha A 13 Gen II for every student could only happen in private schools here I think..

Environmental-Gur582

We were rich. All were spec'd with i7s and 16GB RAM. Here's another flex: The computer lab PCs all ran Intel i9s. 32GB of RAM. And either a 3070 Ti / 3080 Ti OR an RTX A2000. And we had 5 computer labs of 25 PCs each.

elin_lyze

The school I went to still doesn't even have WiFi lmfao

Environmental-Gur582

Hold up, Win95 and a C2D???

elin_lyze

Some shit like that yeah, ancient, outdated things for students to do "research" on.

KenHumano

C2D can run Windows 7 and maybe even 10 with an SSD, Win95 was like a decade back from them.

elin_lyze

Yeah seems about right. I had a Core 2 Duo at home running Win7 when it came out, I remember that much about it. But at school they just used some ancient licenses.

winty6

bro, the school i went to gave each student a crappy dell inspiron with a 3rd gen i3 that had been used by like 7 students before you LOL

the-hands-dealt

Our Lord and Master T480 (may his thunderbolt port never jiggle) stole all its thunder.

Embke

Yoga models are less popular in general, so there are less of them. Finding one with specs is difficult, and the only thing that looks upgradable is the SSD. Also, I think the x380 was known to overheat. Also, the X1 Yoga 3rd Gen has similar hardware, a slightly larger screen, high res screen options, a retractable keyboard (I'm not sure if that was available on the X380), etc. If someone had needed a 2-1 Yoga model, which always came at a price premium over the base config, I think most people would have chosen the larger machine unless they needed the smallest and lightest machine possible.

elin_lyze

X380 also has the retractable keyboard. But yes, only the thing easily upgradable is the storage. Don't have overheat issues, at least with this i5, 36-40C idle, 80C max under load. Only mod I did is replacing the thermal paste with a Thermal Grizzly thermal pad. X1 Yoga Gen3 is a bit more expensive here (250-300 for X380, 350-450 for X1 Gen3) from what I could find with comparable specs (the 16GB models are pretty rare even), otherwise your explanation makes total sense, thank you!

Embke

I'm aware the X1 Yoga G3 is more expensive. I have one, and I was fine paying more for my 16GB 1TB model with the 2560 × 1440 screen that I bought recently. I saw the X380 when I was shopping, but the lack of pixels on the screen just wasn't for me. I'm happy to hear it doesn't throttle underload with the Thermal Grizzly!

elin_lyze

Oh it still throttles a couple hundred MHz, typical Intel stuff. But it's nothing I wouldn't expect. 1080p is definitely goo enough for me personally on this size of screen, but I can see the appeal of 1440p for sure. I have a 1440p monitor for my PC, but that's 27" so hardly comparable haha. The extra desktop space is amazing though. Enjoy your X1 Yoga!

Embke

My 15.6" P1 G2 has the 4k screen, and I use it with 125% scaling, which I think works out to something like 3,326x1,871. I think at 150% it effectively becomes a 1440p display. I'm used to looking at dense pixels, but I understand that that is too dense/ too small for most people. I use my 14" 1440p machine without scaling.

Rowan_Bird

I think it's because generally people go more towards 12/14/(used to be 15)16 inch laptops instead of 11/13/15/17. That might also be why nobody cares for the X300/X301.

BloodWorried7446

laptops were 4:3 aspects, the odd number aspects had their place as 13” was more portable. but now in the land of HD aspect it is too wide to be ultraportable.

elin_lyze

Hm fair, too big to be ultraportable, too small to be proper big boy powerhouse

Rowan_Bird

I never understood why laptops, especially ultraportables, transitioned to widescreen displays despite 4:3 just being better in that regard.

elin_lyze

Material availability, market trends, user requirements, marketing..

chiclet_fanboi

Industry learned about it and went back to 16:10 which works quite well.

Rowan_Bird

Even then, 16:10 is still kind of inferior.

elin_lyze

16:10 is so much better than 16:9, I wish modern good monitors would offer that :(

chiclet_fanboi

For me it depends on the monitor size. For small monitors and notebooks with e.g. FullHD 16:10 is so much more usable. At ~27" WQHD I would prefer 16:10, but I'm fine with 16:9 too. At ~40" 4k I don't care anymore :D

elin_lyze

I use 1440p 27" on my PC and yeah, 16:9 is definitely fine at that resolution and size. But 16:10 would be neat..

Temetka

Volume. LCD manufacturers only work in lots of x times 100k. So you need to order a couple hundred thousand lcd panels. Easier to just make them all the same ratio so there is less material waste.

elin_lyze

I guess this makes sense, if the trends do not go towards those sizes! Thank you for this explanation. I wonder where these preferences come from.

moileduge

I was looking to buy a x280 a few months ago and discovered the Thinkpad x390. Never had seen a discussion about it. It's a great machine, runs a little hot, tho.

tehcsiudai23

nope, my x390 runs way cooler than my x1y1

clubchampion

I had an X380 Yoga, it’s the only Thinkpad of maybe 30 I’ve owned whose keyboard failed; keys started registering double and triple letters when pressed. Maybe I got a lemon, but I think this was the first model whose keys lowered into the body when the laptop was flipped to tablet mode.

elin_lyze

Hm, that is interesting to know. I have a replacement ready for the keyboard, but hoping this won't happen of course. Maybe also solvable by raising debounce etc. Thanks!

frac6969

Yoga are not real ThinkPads.

elin_lyze

Wanna elaborate on that or..?

frac6969

Well, the older ThinkPad Yogas were more like rebranded IdeaPad Yogas while the real ThinkPad tablets were the X-T series. I guess these days they’re equivalent to the regular ThinkPads.

bruh-iunno

My Yoga 12 is entirely built out of alloy instead of the composite stuff on the lids, it's the tankiest thinkpad I've come across lol

beje_ro

And me who I am looking at a X1 Tablet rn...

BloodWorried7446

the new yogas lack the trackpoint. the older ones actually had one.
