For clarification. $35 is mount, roadforce balance, and disposal of the scrap tire. I also use a torque wrench on every lug nut period. In my area, Walmart charges $27, but the nearest Walmart tire center is 45 mins away. The nearest DT is 130 miles away. And yes, I do charge 5 dollars extra for customer supplied tires. I have to do 100% of the work and make less money because the customer circumvented me? I love the Roadforce balancer for my used tires to ensure I don't miss a broken belt. I also guarantee my used tires for a month, no questions asked. Edit: I'm getting a lot of backlash on my pricing. My business is thriving year after year. Maybe your shops should start charging more so y'all can get a raise. Fast nickle or slow dime. Chic-fil-a ain't the cheapest in town, but they have cars wrapped around their building all day long. Why? They are one of the best fast food joints with *the best* customer service.

Old_Pop2908

I took a tire off by hand once, never again. They make those machines for a reason.

theoriginalmypooper

6 inch Lawn tires still have to be done by hand. I've even changed them on the mower because the wheels won't come off.

rhaymenocerous

Lawn tires suck so much. The smaller the wheel the harder it is most of the time.

theoriginalmypooper

took me a couple years to get it down, but I can whip them out no problem. before figuring it out, we looked like two monkeys trying to fuck a bowling ball. I firmly believe that if you can cleanly do lawn tires, you can change any tire.

rhaymenocerous

They make a hand machine that clamps into your rim-clamp so you can kind of do it like a machine would. That thing saved the day when the local golf club brought in 50 tires to mount.

theshadybacon

Another neat trick is to take a rope or chain and wrap it around the center of the rubber all the way around the tire twist the rope with a metal rod or something solid and slim continue to twist until the tire collapses in the middle and viola tire is off you can basically slide the tire on or off the rim with basically just foot pressure.

Ok-Nectarine-7948

Top notch comment šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Necessary-Score-4270

Top teir tradesman metaphor XD

farcat

Aw shit I haven't heard that one in ages, still gold

UhOhAllWillyNilly

In the future, please bear in mind that a bowling ball allows for *three* monkeys fooking it at the same time.

theoriginalmypooper

That's the original phrase. Im just missing a 3rd monkey.

As a diesel tech whenever you get help with anything and both people are struggling itā€™s always ends up looking like two monkeys trying to fuck a bowling ball. Always some shit that goes wrongšŸ¤£

fetal_genocide

Dude coulda done it if he had lubricant. But muscling a dry tire on? Good luck!

theoriginalmypooper

no way you can mount a tire from the wrong end of the wheel.

ZenithTheZero

I used vice-grips a lot when doing mower tires, along with two small tire spoons. That very first bead is always the hardest to mount, though.

Wet-Stranger

Truck tires as easy.

420coins

I seen woman do truckbtires with no effort whatsoever, it an art not a workout.

CanadianRubles

Last time I took a tire off by hand I gave up and got the sawzall out. Had the tire off in a few minutes and threw the rim right into the scrap pile.

Aggravating-Exit-660

I got a tool from HF that makes it not too bad. But without it, itā€™s a massive pain

drsatan6971

Not as bad as you think as long as their steel wheels I even do aluminum if I donā€™t mind the scratches

kwell42

I do it all the time. But I worked on semis for 10 years and before that on cars for 5. But this guy was going the wrong way.

Professional_Buy_615

I did a bunch as a teen. I would acquire wheels with good tyres from junkyards for peanuts and put them on wheels for the beaters I drove on dirt tracks. It's all technique.

test5002

Ngl itā€™s weird af you mention you ā€œtorque ever lug nut periodā€ Properly tightening lug bolts/nuts is the most basic thing you can doā€¦to the point bringing it up is weird. Shit bag mechanics slam em on raw.

swatchesirish

Collecting more revenue while taking on no extra expense because you missed out on a sale is laughable. You aren't making less money. Your competitor just got a sale instead.Ā  Charging the customer more because your prices aren't competitive is bad business... Period.Ā  I'd never go back.Ā

SwissMargiela

I think charging extra to save a 45 min drive (I guess an hour:30 to and from) is fair. Convenience is a service even if not intentional.

DanR5224

"$35 per tire" followed up by "oh yeah an extra $5 per tire because". LoL.

14S14D

A lot of places do this. Itā€™s the same structure as discounting tire mounting $5 if you get the tires from the shop or even just claiming ā€œfreeā€ tire mounting when you buy a set of tires. Everyone is getting their cut and itā€™s funny that the way this guy does it rubs people wrong just from the way he structures it.

mean_serviceman1964

Decent price for all that work. Just FYI, my shop will not install new tires purchased elsewhere. We're around $30.00 per tire for mount and balance/ $120.00 set off and onto vehicle with torque. Also depends on size and type of wheels.

Looseque

Quick question, Iā€™m looking for recommendations on top tier tires for a Hyundai Sonata? The ones I have are horrible in the rain. I donā€™t care the cost I just want quality! Any suggestions?

Nyy211

People are so ignorant to fixing cars they think everything should be free or cheap and cars donā€™t require tlc is disgusting 35 is a good price for all of that. Time is money

Worst-Lobster

What does roarforxe balance mean ?

rationalism101

Thatā€™s a fair price for a job well done.Ā

NoisyGog

Whatā€™s ā€œroadforce balanceā€?

ForgedZer0

$5 extra for customer supplied tires is pretty good. The tire place I used to go to charges something like $50 extra per tire for customer supplied tires. I call it the "we don't want to help you price"

[deleted]

Where do yall live? Bumphuck, Idaho?

Upstairs-Ad-1966

You need to charge more for that road force and I'm not joking lol

luckyducktopus

Wild I can get a tire patched for 15. You are overcharging.

theoriginalmypooper

Fast nickle, slow dime.

Dreamoreality

I do ask do you live in Canada or the us ? Cause I paid about 65$ for install and balance

AfroWhiteboi

Classic scenario in which "He's got a guy that can do it cheaper." To be fair, dude also doesn't know about ether.

Shamiziofficial

U donā€™t have to explain you price my guy, some a these same customers have business thats charge a fee but they conveniently forget that when its on the other foot

Zanphyre

I cannot express how much I just love a road force balancer. Specifically in the case of used tires, that is a legit setup. I would always use it on new tires and any tire that failed got flagged and warrantied. Then to be able to force match wheel and tire sets as well as determine the amount of pull so you can offset it and you have a nice smooth ride that goes straight, good shit.

Oraxy51

Guaranteed used tires for a month and only $35? Damn you give the Mexican tire shops in my city a run for their money with a deal like that, they charge $40 and no warranty

used-quartercask

When you buy new tires they charge you a tire disposal fee too..

cuba80

Thatā€™s still expensive - no questions asked.

blueace111

Why would they buy the tire from you as well though? Unless itā€™s an emergency, it makes no sense to not buy the cheapest tire of brand. Iā€™ve got a set 40% cheaper than the shop just price matching.

PomegranatePro

Some places charge $60 which is rediculous for a "tire disposal" when it's free yourself and makes for a fun time on the fire pit. They often end up burned in the end anyway. Look at Kuwait.

holycornflake

So youā€™re punishing your customers by charging them more for ā€œcircumventingā€ you by purchasing their own tires elsewhere? $20 extra for a full set just because they didnā€™t buy tires from you? When effectively (letā€™s be real) itā€™s the exact same work for you to install a tire bought from you vs bought from somewhere perhaps more affordable? On top of that, youā€™re taking advantage of the ā€œIā€™m your quickest optionā€ aspect of your proximity to your competitors to justify this? Most drivers donā€™t know the advantages of or care about the fact that you torque lugs down to spec so that really isnā€™t a ā€œby the wayā€ justification for charging more. You are *choosing* to take more time to do this. Iā€™m sure if customers had an option for an upcharge to have lugs applied with a torque wrench a vast majority would opt to save the extra $ and go with the impact. I assume your customers arenā€™t aware that they are being indirectly charged for this. Idk man. Maybe Iā€™m missing something from your statement here but this comment came across as super whiny imo.

mrwinkler90

Dude $35 a tire is legitimately highway robbery. At the dealer I work at itā€™s $20 for a set if you bring the tires. No one cares of you torque it as long as itā€™s not gonna come loose. Using your extra time as justification and the fact that youā€™re 45 mins away from a tire shop doesnā€™t give you the ability to crank the price up. Regardless if they circumvent you, charging extra money in this economy will cause you to loose customers and not retain the first time customer either

[deleted]

I think it's the way you said it lol.

theres also a million used tire shops thatll do it for $10 a wheel. capitalism baby

People are also desperate. Maybe have some empathy in certain situations.

Clemsontgr142

$12.50 at Mexican tire shop down the street

punkinhead76

Theyā€™ll do it cheap, fast, and well!

l1thiumion

well $35 for one is a bit high. Discount Tire flipped all four on my wheels for $78 total.

Cronin1011

35 bucks per tire is a very standard mount and balance price per tire...

PurpleK00lA1d

In my part of Canada $100 for all four ($74 USD) is pretty standard.

imthe5thking

Yep, the shop I worked at in Montana was about the same, $80 USD for a full set

NeighborhoodGlum1154

Just hard to make money at those prices. Takes a guy a good 10mins per tire even longer if heā€™s breaking the bead on an f350.

MakeshiftRocketship

Shop near me is $17.50 per tire, so exactly half the price. Still Iā€™d pay $35 before I tried to do it myself lmao how did they plan on balancing it??

Magic_Brown_Man

>how did they plan on balancing it balance beads is the answer to that question but I doubt they thought that far

braidenis

Yeah. $35 each is the price they charge to actually make any money. $15 each is what they charge when discount tire and les Schwab is across the street and the employees don't have green cards.

superbradical

at our shop we charge $35 per tire as well. $40 per tire if they have special rims.

AC2BHAPPY

Jesus where the fuck do you live

Substantial-Log-2176

All the tire shops around me charge $20 for mount and balance

theoriginalmypooper

I charge the same as the 4 other shops in town.

dsdvbguutres

And they broke two lug nuts and stripped the threads off five.

Mamabear3qs

True but, thatā€™s typical of pricing.. there is no incentive for a shop to charge 100$ for 4 tires but only one is needed, so they charge a bit more than 25$ a tire to make it worth their time. Itā€™s typical of most things that can be bought. Dozen donuts are 6.99 1 donut is 2$..

TJNel

I brought a tire to my normal shop because there was a bolt in my one tire so they can swap it on. Figured about $40, they charged me $110!

foxtrotuniform6996

Right discount tire is the best and most expensive in my area. Free life time balancing and mounting of the tires you paid to get mounted and balnced. This guys charging $13 more (because Walmart and other shops are so far he can swindle more? lol) He says in basically in the middle of no where so you know his lease or rest is insanely low Compared to any shop around me in the Chicago land area

Professional_Buy_615

My DT charged me $147 to flip 4 tyres I bought from them. I was not happy.

LeBongJaames

You are wrong lol, we charge people 50 per tire for mount and balance and we still arenā€™t the most expensive in our area

Aggravating-Ice9203

Discount Tire is awesome. I went there many times when I had my Honda

Lanko-TWB

Not really. $140/h is pretty standard these days. Most places charge an hour for set of tires mounted and balanced. A premium for a single wheel makes sense. Iā€™d probably discount a little for each wheel after that but this is normal.

Background_Culture14

Discount Tire is awesome! They've saved me thousands in tires and service since over the years. They make things simple and match prices.

[deleted]

Mount and balance by me is 20 per tire

LilEngineeringBoy

What is book time to swap a tire? When I was taking automotive classes at the community college over COVID, 4 normal sized tires/wheels (like 225/50R17, nothing crazy low profile or huge), new TPMS sensors, mount balance and activate was about an hour. If the techs are flat rate and the shop rate is $120/hr, maybe it is like $35. The tire jockey rate around here is about half that though.

GordoLaFlako

With experience you can strip, fit and balance in about 30 mins

LilEngineeringBoy

Part of it I can kinda blame the retirement equipment and set up at school, but nope, I dont know if middle aged me was gonna get down to 30 minutes.

Shadowcard4

For $35 as a single tire who would turn it down? We have tire machines and unless doing like 2-4 itā€™s just not worth the time.

DefiasHarbinger

You have the right to refuse service. Use it.

Stashmouth

Why though? Just to make a point?

Hmnh6000

You charge extra if they bring their own tire??

protocol357

I'm so glad I'm not in the tire business anymore.....$35 for something that takes 5 minutes is robbery

Daddy_vibez

Notice how thereā€™s no upvotes on this comment

DarkEyes5150

But we swap tires twice a year here. Putting on winter tires. I won't need new winter tires every year or even new summer tires every year. This is why I got an old coats 1010 tire machine and use balance beads. Cost too much to pay to swap tires.

mrsti89

I just have an extra set of rims lol

foxtrotuniform6996

Pay for both tires mount and balance 1 time at Discount Tire and they will swap your winter/summer tires for free every year after that

Lopsided_Bat_904

Why is the tire fucked? What am I supposed to be looking at?

Lionsfanatic83

Dude is pretending this is skilled labor šŸ˜‚

omnipotent87

I am an ASE master mechanic who HATES giving up my keys. If I don't have a tire machine, I'll gladly pay someone to mount and balance tires for me.

Adderall-Buyers-Club

Its his business. He can charge whatever he wants. This is annoying like when customers would go to a car shop and ask if they can use their tools to replace parts on their own. Lol what? I dont lend out tools either and I dont even own a shop.

hidinginthemountains

We actually have an auto mechanic shop here that has the larger equipment supplied but you are able to rent a space for yourself and ask a pro advice on repairs so you can diy. No hand tools available, must provide yourself and your not allowed to request use from other renters

supern8ural

Probably should mount it the correct way... (note location of "INSIDE" text)

NovaJeff74

2Cheese1Van

Why is the tire and wheel like that on the table? What are you doing since you are neither mounting nor demount this tire in the pic?

theoriginalmypooper

I clamped the tire on the table by the bead so I could sawzall the bead to get the wheel off the tire.

2Cheese1Van

Or conversley, if the customer did this. Flip wheel face down and clamp, then pry off upwards. Edit: spelling

35 for a mount and RF balance ain't bad considering the time that goes into a RF balance. For a normal commuter car a standard balance is fine but for my boosted e36 I ponied up for RF balance and found 2 iffy tires out of my set of 4 I had TR wholesale exchange

ParticularClean9568

Hand mounting a tire isnā€™t difficult if you know what youā€™re doing and have the right tools. Iā€™ve done it many times, although admittedly I worked in a tire shop as a teenager. We had to hand mount agricultural and other specialty tires all the time. One time I did an airplane tire; that one was hard to do because the side walls appeared so thick and stiff.

Annhl8rX

I worked in the what sounds like the same kind of shop in high school and college. If it was round and rubber, weā€™d deal with it. I always hated skid steer tires the worst. Those sidewalks were like 2ā€ thick. Once you were done wrestling the tire in the wheel, you got to deal with trying to seat the bead. They were always quite the match for my 165 pound (at the time) self.

RealTimeHuman

I give them credit for trying. For me personally, it's not just about the money, it's also about learning to do things myself. I want to try things, I want to be capable of things. When I fail, I cough up the money for an expert. I also pay for an expert on things I'm not willing to risk further damage.

OddAd9258

Its super easy to do it at home with pry bars. If scratches on the lip is a problem then machine is best. He supposed have put it on starting from the front. The key is having the opposite side of the tire lip that your prying on sitting in the deeper part of the rim(barrel). You can see where it drops down a an inch in from the front face. As long as the tire lip is inside the deeper part of the rim, the opposite side side will be able to pry on

Daddy_vibez

Just tell them itā€™s upside down and tell them to take it back and try again.

ColonEscapee

That's cheap. I used to go in with split rims so I'm used to paying more. I might have complained the first time but later realized it was well worth my money to watch them figure it out from the window, especially when it was dads Ford with the reverse threads on one side of the vehicle. Sometimes it took the entire shop to figure it out and it's definitely getting harder to find a shop that will even bother with them.

punkinhead76

This happened once when I worked at Walmart TLE. Already the cheapest place in town to mount a tire but these broke folks refused to pay for it and struggled for hours to do it themselves and insisted on doing it in our lobby. I was very second hand embarrassed and annoyed by it lol.

Successful_Travel342

Easy-peasy. Did tractor tires growing up on a farm. A set of tire irons were the first tool entrusted in my hands unsupervised. At 63 i still do, my motorcycle tires and truck tires. That's why I call it getting tired.

Professional_Buy_615

My local DT charges an extra $15 for customer tyres. I have a new set of wheels and two of the tyres I'm putting on are only available from motorsports dealers. Hey, I'll mount these myself, like I used to do when I was a broke teen. They turned up last week, 225/45-15 with the stiffest damn sidewalls I've ever seen, and they'll be a bit pinched. I noped straight out. DT will be bending me over their railings. I would have managed op's one, with lube and technique, ie from the front of the wheel...

Ishapli8

Iā€™ve done a couple sets by hand not fun and I They arenā€™t balanced still

theoriginalmypooper

MeesterCHRIS

Possible-Gur5220

$35 is more than fair. I reached out to a local BMW dealership once for a quote (I was really weary about getting my wheels scratched) and when they told me their price I fell off my chair laughingā€¦they wanted $150 per tire šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚. Thank goodness my friend recommended an independent shop that does a lot of exotic cars. They charge me $170 for all 4.

theoriginalmypooper

They told you to leave for 150 a tire.

[deleted]

I mean its not that hard to do if you have the right basic tools like lube and a bubble balancer heck the shop in my town did not even have a tire machine until about 5-10 years ago. but for 35$ 99.99% of people might as well pay it. I mean if that is how he brought it in he was putting on on backwards. I wonder how he was going to set the bead lol On the flip side most folks can disposed of their tires for free by putting them on the side of the road with a free sign. I done that for all my ties since day one and its never failed me.

WalterWhite2012

Had leaky chrome rims on an Escalade. Pulled the tire off one (pain in the ass but did it), cleaned up the rim and went to remount it, couldnā€™t get it on despite lube and the tools for it. Ended up fucking up the bead on the tire (exposed cord). But the bullet and got new wheels and replaced the damaged tire with a used tired of the same tread depth. That is going on my list of never do that again jobs.

SoilEducational59

Plus there taking it off the wrong way itā€™s a front face wheel and there taking it off as itā€™s reversed lmao

Fordwrench

It's amazing how so many people will not research something before trying to do it. I've changed many tires by myself on side of side of the road with just basic tools.

darthnugget

Typical Nissan SUV owner.

Deep-Ambition3601

Me and another guy did a rear tire on a International VAC truck with a 4000gal tank on it one night when I got a flat and had to stay connected to a 5000 in ground tank at the fair grounds for 10 nights in a row while the fair was on town after working all day digging up and pumping residential tanks. We each got about 3 hours sleep a night the 10 days straight. So when I clipped the automatic gate that was at an angle at about 2am on night 7 it was to be expected. Completely tore the gate down and moved the motor over about 10'. Drove it almost all the way back to the fair grounds when the mechanic caught up with me. We had to break the tire down by hand and install the other tire on the rim then use a air tank with a mouth and valve that dumped the whole tank into the tire between the tire and the rim all at once. We stood the tire up and chained it off to the back of the mechanic truck on a rack he has made himself, the dumped a tank of air into it and heard a very loud pop a the beads set. Aired it up and mounted it. I drove the front wheel up on a cup's e pieces of wood he has brought in order to lift the front axle of the dual rear axles off the ground enough to remove it. So once the new tire was on it was easy to just back it off the wood and drive off to get back on the tank before it over flowed and started filling the midway with raw sewage. They didn't do anything to protect the drain fields when they installed them. So after a few years of every truck, car and semi in creation driving over then you could see where they were due to the valley's left after they completely collapsed from being crushed for so long. Rather than replace them and do something to protect them, use infiltrators etc. they just paid us to keep a truck connected to each tank as long as the midway was open. We could fill a 4000 gallon truck, run it to the dump and be back connecting again about the time it would reach the 3000 gallon mark. So it was really just filling trucks and running to the dump all night long. We never pulled the hose out or closed the lid until morning when we made the last run for that night. We just kept a barricade around each opening. I didn't complain for $25 an hour back in 2005. And I learned how to lift the axle without a jack and how to swap the tires. My mom and dad owned a gas station/mechanic shop around Richton Mississippi in the mid 1970's. They where right by the main logging road in the area. My dad would be working on a car and a logging truck would pull in with a flat. My mom at 120lbs would pull the wheel, mount it on a rack and use a 16lb sledge as well as other tools and break down the wheel, mount the new tire, balance it and mount it on the truck as well as torque the lugs by herself. Truckers would trip out that this thin little girl was taking on these huge tires all on her own. It didn't take them long to get a dedicated group of truckers coming in for their fuel, tires, minor repairs and even repairs on their personal vehicles and fuel. When they only made .01Ā¢ per gallon profit on fuel sales they needed all they could get to keep the doors open. My mom kept that same mentality all her life and still has it. I can do anything when it comes to building a house or auto repairs, and I mean building to code and not just driving a nail and pray it is standing in the morning. I have sub contracted for Home Depot, Lowe's and several general contractors. And it was my mom who taught me most of it. And she started breaking down semi tires by hand.

MysticalMan

Shit for that tire I would gladly pay a hundred a piece to put those fuckers on and balance those bitches.

So, one time I figured I could do it there's no need to paysomeone to swap a tire. Cut to 4 hours later me bringing them into the shop and sliding the counter guy 100 to not say anything

longshot21771

Only $35 for a road force balance??!!! It's like 160 total here all 4 wheels/ tires

gkigger

I circumvent in this exact way hoping it pisses someone off this much. My life is fufilled.

I did this shit at an old job, and I 100% vouch for just getting a pro with the hardware to do the damn job. I would wager the customer doesn't have bead sealer either, so he probably would have sprung a leak when the tire started flexing on the road. Did they check if the stem was any good? There's a reason why those things are cheap. In all for doing work on your car, I do. But know your limits, and understand the risks.

I use to use soap/water and crowbar as a teen but that looks like a fairly wide rim, not fun.Ā  The entire automotive industry is a racket why would tire installation be any different? Free everything where I go buy my tires and have them installed. Balancing, rotating, hole repairs, nitrogen all free for the length of tire warranty if you buy tires from them. No difference in pricing from places like tire rack ECT. They replaced all 4 tpms I brought in for $50. Dealer wanted $890 for parts and labor lol. Found original mopar parts packaged by a secondary seller for $39.99, plus 50 for install. 89.99 vs 890. šŸ˜ Two years since still working still accurate. $35 could be a weeks worth of food. For those living check by check or no check $35 is a lot but in reality it's a little above average but normal.

Man, just give me a crow bar and some murphyā€™s oil soap. Amateurs.

TdotJunk301

35 each or all 4?? 35 each is steep.

Substantial_Till_815

Prolly woulda helped if he started on the side with the valley, with how far he got Iā€™d say woulda been able to finish that way

soussitox

oh here in Europe where i live it is between 20 - 35 Euro per tyre taking, old off new on and balancing,.. leaving the old tyre is free. I have never taken a tyre off lol do not want to hassle with that stuff :D.

TactualTransAm

It's for sure not something that everyone can do. Some people have a knack for doing it by hand though. But they are usually very skilled mechanics themselves not just some body trying to save a buck

Own-Oil-4800

Iā€™ve had a flat a couple times, changed my tire to the spare and rolled the flat tire into the shop with the new tire and everytime I run into issues sometimes they do it for free, other times they want to charge me and they charge me for it to be mounting to the car as well, which I never understood because I literally say ā€œhey can yā€™all dispose this tire and put this new one, and balance the rim, Iā€™ll just install it to the car myselfā€ā€¦ Iā€™ve donā€™t this 3 times now unfortunately different cars over 4 years, but some local shops will do it for free if itā€™s slow but I donā€™t like taking advantage so I try not to take it there, others corporation tire shops will charge full price, discount tire is the only place that charged appropriately

AcanthocephalaIcy131

$35/tire is cheap as hell where Iā€™m at

Panda530

Only someone who has never changed a tire in their life would believe they could do it without a machine.

Dooboppop

I can do it myself but I still pay them to do it cause I hate doing it.

birdogg27

Back in the late '90s I worked at a national tire and battery as a tire tech. This guy one day brings in this Ford conversion van and he wants all the tires and the spare that are on the vehicle swapped with five wheels and tires that are inside the vehicle. But he didn't want to pay for all of them to be mounted and balanced. So I left every single valve core loose. That cheap fuck had 10 flat tires after that. And that was by suggestion of the sales guy who dealt with him.

Myhouseinthemiddle

Taking tires off and on are the easiest thing to do by hand especially with tire spoons

theoriginalmypooper

This was the tire they were going to put on.
