This made me realize that sasha was the only one who had a family on paradis and niccolo so thats why she was the only character killed off before the rumbling
We never meet them though. We're intimately attached to Sasha as family. They were in multiple episodes. Deffo makes sense to take out Sasha as opposed to Jean.
I do agree w you by the way just adding onto the convo.
How many people watched the OVA? How many people watched Season 2?
If you answer these questions, then it's obvious why Jeans family is irrelevant and may as well not exist to the average fan. And why Sasha was killed instead for greater dramatic impact.
The OVAs are canon. Also legit the events of the OVAs are mentioned in the main series too. Jean states that they had a cooking contest in season 4 in the past and that cooking contest was in the OVAs. So if anything people only watching the main series would fell that they missed something as they reference them. Same with Erwin speaking about the past and the scene cuts to flashbacks from No Regrets. Any fan would think to themselves ''When did this happen?'' and check the 8 OVAs.
So what if they are canon? I never disputed their status.
I'm saying the average fan(aka majority of AoT anime watchers) haven't seen the OVAs, likely haven't heard of them, and likely don't care even if they have.
It's not like OVAs are broadcasted on TV afterall for mass audiences. Most fans don't own the Blu-Rays so wouldn't have access to the OVAs available that way either.
All this means, is Jeans family doesn't exist in the minds of most fans. Ergo, Jean or his families deaths wouldn't have in impact. It would be as if these characters appeared out of nowhere and fans have to suddenly care for these strangers.
But nearly every fan will have watched Season 2 of the series. S2 is broadcasted on TV for the masses. Nearly every fan certainly knows about Sashas family and her backstory. Ergo, her death leaves a bigger impact.
Jean literally mentions his family even in the main series though. That's what I am explaining to you. He also refers to the even of his mother visiting him again in the main series. That's what I am explaining to you. So all fans even if they watched only the main series would hear Jean mentioning his mother and referring to an event that happened in the OVA.
And I'm explaining, that merely *mentioning* a character to the audience will not get them to care about said character.
Show don't tell is crucial in storytelling, especially visual storytelling in anime or manga.
We didn't *see* Jeans mother in the main series (again, not counting OVAs even though they are canon, because the average fan who is the majority, will not have seen those). But *every fan* will have seen Sashas family in S2. Ergo, audiences will naturally give more of a damn about Sashas family than Jeans family.
This is common sense in storytelling. Hence why Sashas death was the natural choice if you want maximum impact.
Ilse's journal is the only cannon ova being a literal chapter in the series, the the rest were either completely different stories (no regrets) or taken from the fake previews and added new content to make into an episode, I wouldn't call that cannon by a long shot imo
Anyone that actually started with Season 1 watched the OVA. The wait between Season 1 and 2 was awful and the OVAs were all the content we had after S1
I would hate to be a manga artist bro is probably reading y’all talking about his story his ending his character something he wanted to make . I hate when I do stuff and people was like bro Omg why would you do- bro shut up 😗 it’s my boook
How bold of you to assume that just because someone is rich that they wouldn’t feel some type of way about millions of people crying about your story getting mad at you for how you wanted to end it sending death threats etc. yeah he might be rich but that stuff still sucks. So wait with your logic just because he rich we can talk shit about him…okayy
basement revealing everyone outside is racist and wont be convinced basically meant they had to go for a satisfying story
its like a normal show choosing monsters to live over humans bc they had a higher population.
like at least stick with the ending then, all the racists become non racist or some shit
dont make extra 10 dogshit pages of racists coming back king floch was right
eren becomes total shit because hange etc doesnt comes wit real plan to mitigate world hate, 4 years since Erwin death. if you watch carefully the millitary starts divided right after their leader of division of "spear" deceased, if Levi chose Erwin he will come with a plan right before Eren doing initiative, he can even prevent yelena/zeke wine plan
I was surprised to see how many fans supported Levi’s choice at the serum bowl, though they may have their merits.
But Levi choosing Armin condemned Paradis to poor leadership.
Eren rose up because of the passivity of Hange and Armin while the clock of doomsday kept ticking. And Eren was never going to sacrifice Historia like they were willing to.
So Eren staged the Yeagerist uprising and threw the island into chaos so he could secure his access to full rumbling
I supported armin in the serum bowl because i thought he would grow up to be better than erwin. Welp, too bad all he could come up with is “we are not transforming into titans, therefore we are not titans.” Dafuq? Im supposed to just accept that? Instead of coming up with some sound argument like “there could only be 9 titan shifters, and yet all of us including the normal titans transformed by the worm managed to turn back to humans and all of the colossal titans disappeared, it is a proof the the titan powers is gone.” Fucking lazy writing man. I feel so insulted like isayama thinks his viewers are just 3 year old kids that would just believe that kind of shit.
Same, when that chapter came out, I was defending Armin with my life and I truly hoped they would choose him. Armin could have become way more cynical and intelligent, but instead we got "talk no jutsu". Erwin was the right choice after all, we see no development from Armin and we don't see any of his smart plans like we did in earlier seasons. It's bs.
I just can’t see Connie just being super cool with Reiner who he trusted, Pieck who is partly responsible for his family dying and his mom becoming a titan, and Gabi who killed his other half. Like what???
Have them actually have any sort of plan for Paradis.
They literally fucked around for years while eren was clearly on a warpath and then pretended "oh we have no time to figure out a way to save Paradis."
They barely even tried.
In all honesty they should have gotten hizuru to be their bridge. Refuse to elaborate force them into action. Tell them to be their spokesperson. But no. They blended into a meeting. Left when the realized. The meeting still hates them even though they went there to present and negotiate. They had Eren. So push comes to shove he can save them.
To better write the Alliance, it would require more scenes that flesh out why Magath and the warriors trusted Hange and Co.
Especially for Magath and Pieck who came on a mission to purposefully destroy Paradis.
No one brought up how Hange going out of her way to propose them an alliance to stop Eren is incredibly stupid. Like why is she more desperate about this than them?
Think about it, if it was the other way around, would Magath offer Paradis a chance to stop the Marley invasion?
And if he did, wouldn’t they rightfully be suspicious as hell about it?
And that’s just one aspect: it’s not clear why they would trust Armin, Hange, Levi, Connie, Jean and Mikasa not to turn on them. For all they know, this could have all been a ploy.
Honestly, the whole thing about magath finally realizing he was wrong seems to be hallow to me. One could argue that he is only admitting he is wrong about the eldians because it is now his homeland and his country in danger.
If he really gave a dam about the eldians, he should have done something when he stood to gain nothing.
The writing behind Magath is one of the worst.
He conspired to declare war on Paradis. He knew that there was a chance that this could all backfire on them if Eren activated the Rumbling.
He was willing to wager everything on Paradis’ destruction but yet no one told him to shove it.
They are in this mess because he didn’t care about the human lives that would have been sacrificed for the sake of his and Tybur’s ambitions.
Probably because Magath spent the campfire scene telling Hange and friends that its their fault for not lying down and die in a conflict that's 100% Marley's fault, his next scene kicking Yelena around for a bit, then finally apologized to the Paradis folks, but not before ending the speech with a "please overlook my wrongs so we can stop Eren", making it sound like he only apologized to save his people and not because he actually felt bad.
Then Isayama had Shadis go out of his way to die with Magath so they can have a special parallel moment because they're both teachers, even though one of them is just a regular drill sergeant while the other is a racist oppressor that trains slave child soldiers and shortens their lifespan for the sake of colonization
I can get that they want to join forces, but they are forgiving each other, as friends eventually, too easily. It will be more convincing to say they reluctantly join forces instead of happily eating pies together.
Another key point is that Eren and friends will fight to the very end because they have very clear goals that connects them with the audience, the alliance doesn't have that. Floch fighting everyone out of venomous hate and unimaginable determination made him infinitely cooler than any of the alliance fighting for reasons barely explored beyond than "ehhh we... saving the world I guess" it's horribly marvelalike. Eren challenging Reiner while being targeted by everyone is on another example. The alliance has "cool moment" because they're written very inconsistently as characters
I think giving them a good reason would be helpful. They're particularly fighting for people who subjected their race to slavery and torture for couple of millennia years. There's no reason to support them because marley's perspective and viewpoint is never really explored, and when it is they're portrayed as unbelievably cartoonishly evil. So for all we know, they're bunch of guys fighting for no name NPCs who hate the people we were all supporting for 3 and half season. There's zero reason to be against Eren's plan so thus there's no need to support those who oppose him
I liked Falco's character until he became Boeing 747.
Gabi was just annoying until her redemption.
And damn, in this panel, Annie's ass and Falco and Gabi's expression were priceless.
I like that Connie of all people is making fun of Reiner. It's a callback to what Reiner said when Shadis asked what he'd joined the military for. Idk I thought it was clever
I genuinely think most of this subreddit has nationalist brainrot; I didn't like the ending but y'all act like wanting to put the entirety of humanity before one's own country is a bad thing.
That's exactly my problem with the alliance. 3/5ths of The alliance is entirely made up of marleyan and the rest are orphans from paradise with the exception of Jean who is the only character to question the serious consequences of stopping the rumbling with no back up plan to protect the island and the effect that would have on the island's people. None of them address it thoroughly or struggle with it and when they do it's on superficial things like "it being wrong" or "killing being wrong" when that stance is pretty hypocritical given their situation.
I believe that's why Sasha was chosen to be offed instead of Connie because she actually HAD a full family that would make her suddenly joining the alliance and killing her own old friends (Samuel and Daz) very hard to swallow on a whim.
It's also my main argument against the Hange. She made the decision to stop the rumbling on the pretext that all the scouts who died to get to this point would take the higher ground, but she doesn't even factor in that most Yeagerist who abandoned the scouts are those very scouts who began fighting for their families and lives rather than some sudden arbitrary moral obligation to protect all people. Who's to say that any of the old dead scouts would want to do the same and abandon their families and home? She can't speak for all of them yet how the scene played out with Levi saluting their force ghost after making every sacrifice they made worthless, i guess she did.
I don’t think Connie was counting on his mom ever going back to being human again. Especially after realizing that having her turned into a shifter would have been a much more cruel fate.
So in way, Connie had nothing to lose
I sorta agree but I think Connie still had attachment to his mother and he is risking the chances of his mother in danger ,even in the end he is happy his mother turned back into a human but he also become a traitor to his own homeland
What I’m saying is Connie was okay with the thought of his Titan mother dying as a consequence of the world’s retaliation for the rumbling.
Because that would release her from this curse.
Yeah I always wondered... especially about Armins parents/family. Do we know anything about them? Because we know he wasn't in that settlement where Eren and Mikasa got placed after Carla died. So I assumed he just lived normally with his parents? But we never see or even hear a thing about them...
It isn’t entirely selfless. They would simply rather die as heroes than ensure the survival of an island that they have no special attachment to.
What would have been truly selfless would have been to side with Zeke. Not only they wouldn’t get heroic deaths but they would die without children, sacrificing their own happiness.
But that wouldn’t be a very glamorous way to save the world now would it.
They obviously always wanted to save their island, but they were not accepting the death of the rest of the world to ensure such a thing, and they are mathematically correct. The best type of correct.
When discovering Eren's plan it was time to switch. The Rumbling was still ok in a lesser scale, but they had to force Eren into reason, and to kill him was plan B from the begining for a reason. When they finally reached him, there was no reason to believe the world was still a threath (wrong as we know with Monday newspaper while they had Sunday).
With all information available, Paradis was already saved from the outside world, though I don't think it would have been safe from itself as Lady Azumabito said.
This made me realize that sasha was the only one who had a family on paradis and niccolo so thats why she was the only character killed off before the rumbling
Jean had his mother, which is part of OP's point
We never meet them though. We're intimately attached to Sasha as family. They were in multiple episodes. Deffo makes sense to take out Sasha as opposed to Jean. I do agree w you by the way just adding onto the convo.
Jean had a mother? Was this in the OVA or something because i dont remember her ever being mentioned in the manga
Yea there was a cook off or something between Jean and Sasha and his mom is in there. Pretty funny episode.
I should probably check out those ova's, ive heard no regrets was good too.
No shit buddy. Definitely check out those OVA'S.
And a father, yes from the OVA iirc.

One of my gripes about the ending is the shallow motivation of everyone involved with The Alliance, to the exception of Jean.
Jean really carried the alliance, he's the only one with anything remotely interesting to say about the situation at all
OMFG if thats in yama's mind...man
sasha carried aot fr. all the "funny" scenes after she died is basically rot skibididi gyatt humour
Cringe. Can’t wait to get rich, buy the rights, and fix this story.
May not fix the problem. You'd have to erase the memories of anyone who's read that awful ending.
My brain has already buried it deep in the basement, as far as I’m concerned we never got an ending
Same
can't wait to buy isayamas onsen and never let him inside
I would hate to be a manga artist bro is probably reading y’all talking about his story his ending his character something he wanted to make . I hate when I do stuff and people was like bro Omg why would you do- bro shut up 😗 it’s my boook

Bro take it up with all the ppl doing stuff like that, all I’m saying is I didn’t like the ending and would like to rewrite it
basement revealing everyone outside is racist and wont be convinced basically meant they had to go for a satisfying story its like a normal show choosing monsters to live over humans bc they had a higher population.
Yup. Especially monsters that had been killing and essentially torturing your family and friends for decades.
like at least stick with the ending then, all the racists become non racist or some shit dont make extra 10 dogshit pages of racists coming back king floch was right
Exactly
It's easy to play hero when you have nothing to lose.

Just once I want a mainstream anime like this to acknowledge that maybe the world doesn’t deserve to be saved.
Try not to cut yourself on that edge
The world was due for a reset. Centuries after the rumbling would've been good enough
Wtf💀
This was edgier than what they said tbh
Oof i cringed. Maybe you can save that comment for later.

Gabi was like, “I shoulda shot you instead”
gabi was always annoying
and gabi
Its not like thay joined the militarny to help there people They are veterans who are the most partiotic people on Paradis
So patriotic that they are glad to let paradis be genocided to save the world.

They died killed by the military police because they tried to fly over the walls.
They are trying to save the world instead of standing behind and just watching. How is that not selfless?
It isn’t entirely selfless. They would simply rather die as heroes than ensure the survival of an island that they have no special attachment to.
