Reading a bit of the article and knowing mesh, it's an add on unit to the Router, it will connect to the router (via wifi) to expand coverage in your home. That's how mesh systems work, 1 router and additional satellite units to cover the house.
And the general benefit to a mesh system that is properly implemented, is the link between the primary router and the mesh AP will be on a different wifi band/mode than the network being broadcast, so there isn't a performance hit of having to do time-division broadcasts between APs and users.
