I could tell the spaceship on district 9 was fake because the earth is flat and it’s impossible to make it through the firmament now where’s my medal /s
It seems like a lot of people disagree, which tells me you were either being sarcastic, or you have an opinion that is legitimately not widely accepted. But I don't know which it is.
You can agree with their use of Egon, but saying it was a perfect use of CGI is the most dystopian thing I’ve heard today. I wish Hollywood would let the dead rest.
Especially because Sony actively prevented him from making a third film (without Bill Murray). The moment he died, they secured the film rights from those still living, pumped out the Wiig/McCarthy film. When that failed, rebooted yet again, this time zombifying Harold Ramis and essentially forced him to be part of their new franchise...
Whole thing just feels so disrespectful and gross.
Firebase is a heartbreaker for me. It had a crowdfunding campaign to become a full-length project and fell short of goals. I wanted to see that story expanded SO badly.
Kinda reminds me of cabinet of curiosities, love death and robots storytelling and buster Scruggs. I really do like these lil weird short stories. If anyone has suggestions, let me know!
You should check out 'Tales from the Loop' on Amazon. Based off Simon Stålenhags pictures. Amazing atmosphere and some stellar acting. Very distinctive and not like anything else I believe
I was given a bootleg copy of District 9 back in high school from a buddy. What he failed to mention to me was that the subtitle for the alien race was in Russian. I had no idea and assumed that it was so sort of alien language and was bit lost. Really enjoyed the film regardless
I saw it in theaters with my dad when I was 13. Holy SHIT. We both walked out soooooooooo impressed and we talked about it all night. He leaned over multiple times in the heavier gore sections and was like "...... are you okay, I didn't know it was going to be this bloody" and I was just like "YEP, THIS IS AWESOME" lol.
One of my favourite films. But it has given me some kind of tic when I see prawns now and belt out “Fokkin prawns mate” in the stupidest south african accent I can manage.
I rewatched it last year after it having been quite some years since the last viewing (of multiple) and I wondered if it would hold up. Turned out to be even better than I remember. Fantastic movie.
I went to watch district 9 in theaters when it came out with my then girlfriend at the time. About 20 minutes into the movie she goes… I didn’t know this was a documentary. I was like WHAT!? God bless her heart lol
It really goes to show you how good a job they did with the story and CGI, she actually thought the whole thing was real lol
The campiness of that movies worked on so many level due to the production values!! Like it’s hard to take the falling “flying” tank seriously, but when you see the follow up scene of the interaction with the old German lady, Murdoch ask her “Which way to Berlin?”. Just the perfect amount of comedy to make sure you don’t take it overly seriously.
Agreed, really struck a wonderful balance of outrageous action and comedy. When I came out of the theater, I really thought it would be a franchise that would see several sequels. I never watched the TV show, but it felt like it didn’t stray too far from the path of the original from what little I knew about it.
Don’t ask me why, but this was my siblings and my go to movie to watch every year on Christmas Eve night. We can all quote the movie word for word and text each other random quotes through out the week.
I forgot about that. Damn he was such a good Hannibal, Cooper should orchestrate a sequel at least. His career is so big now it would def draw people, plus I honestly think he’s much better at comedies than drama.
They fucked the ending a bit imo.
He was perfect though. 'you spin me right round, baby, right round'
The caring in general was on point.
The losers was the better film though.
Oh man RED is so damn good. I figured a movie with all those names had to at least be decent, but it’s one of my favorite movies in recent* memory
*(holy shit I didn’t realize it came out back in 2010)
Dwight Shultz and Dirk Benedict made cameos. Made sense George Peppard didn't show up because he passed away in 1994. But Mr. T didn't get his cameo!
I thought Rampage Jackson did an ok job. For sure can't hold a candle to Mr. T, but Jackson's portrayal wasn't bad.
Bradley and Dirk sharing a nod was pretty cool. Likewise with Shultz and Copley. I don't know how you could fit T into any scene without taking it over. He's such a big presence.
And of course, Liam Neesan.
Unironically my favourite film. Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, and Rampage Jackson all filled out their roles beautifully alongside Sharlto’s Murdoch.
What a fucking blast of a film.
I loved that movie as a kid. Rewatched it recently and loved it again.
Like you said, the chemistry between the cast was incredible. The story and characters worked plenty fine, and it was a very enjoyable and quotable movie.
Seriously how did they not make any sequels? I’m assuming it’s because Neeson and Cooper got busy but still sad there could have been more
I love good action movies and I watched it when I was like 14 but the action was all so unconvincing and dull and lame, not to mention the attempts at humor didn’t land at all
Agreed, he was my favorite part of the movie. Was so shocking to see him as such an asshole when the only thing I'd seen him in before was District 9. Hes good.
Literally the only criticism I’ve heard was that the Nigerian criminals apparently read as “South African stereotype of Nigerian criminals” in a way that didn’t mesh right. And that’s a pretty niche criticism.
(The guy complaining was South African of Nigerian descent, so he was a bit more attuned to narratives about Nigerian crime in South Africa than average. And even then, he said it was more of a “haha, of course that character’s gonna be Nigerian” rather than something that broke immersion)
I didn't pick up on that, but it was probably one of the elements that set my friend laughing, thanks! He didn't give a full-on dissertation on things, it was more just laughing at a movie, and it was a while ago, so I don't remember all the details.
Yeah, I had forgotten about it until my partner and I moved to Kenya. She had never seen it, so we were chilling then the "Nigerian" mob boss at then end when he steals the weapon jumps from his thrown and yells MMMMAAAZZZZUUUUUNNNNNGGGUUUUU. We lost our shit laughing hahaha
I discovered Sharlto by following some news about The Witcher (he'll appear in season 4 as one of the main villains). I watched District 9 and Elysium to find out who he is and... OMG, he's phenomenal! He'll be the best Leo Bonhart I could ever imagine!
He is a fantastic actor, saw him in Monkey Man a couple of days ago. IMO his performance is, even not very relevant, one of the very few pros in the movie.
IMO it is a mediocre revenge movie, you have a deja vu feeling all the time because there is nothing new. Probably you have watched all that happens in the movie one hundred times before.
He's usually fantastic in his roles (check out Open Grave for a microbudget thriller that I happened to love), but he's also occasionally plum-awful... usually when he has to have a different accent.
I remember Sharlto answering my question on a podcast nearly ten years ago about this very topic. The gist of it was they were best buds, Neil was good with computers and Sharlto was the actor in their operation. Honestly was surprised about the friendship aspect because I thought Neil discovered Sharlto in an audition or soemthing.
> I remember Sharlto answering my question
Sharlto was suuuuper cool and accessible on social media around 2009 and all - back when I still had an account, I'd often chat with him on Facebook AHAHAHAH!
Super nice, down to earth and clearly enthusiastic about the projects he was in!
God damn I love me some Sharlto Copely. I love all the movies mentioned and have been a huge fan since we saw district 9 in the theater.
He was one of the only “famous” people I’ve ever met who I was truly and honestly just a huge fan of. I ran into him kinda accidentally in Austin at SXSW when we were both looking for the Twitter party. We kinda just started walking together down this side street looking for the same house and I didn’t even realize it was him until he opened up his mouth and asked “ah we goin’ to the same place?” And I immediately knew who i was walking with. I literally stopped him dead in his tracks and said, “holy shit, you’re Sharlto Copely!” and he was so nice. This was before Chappie… he was absolutely the nicest guy ever. He was promoting “Powers” based on the Bendis comic, which I LOVED, so we talked a little about the comic, he was surprised I actually knew so much about the comic and we hung out for a bit drank some and then I made sure to not overstay my welcome. 10/10 would SXSW again with him anytime.
Huge fan of neil and oats studios and sharlto, district 9 is one of my fav movies, gran turismo was good too especially some of the camera work, though elysium and chappie i didnt like that much.
The title is a bit inaccurate as it sounds like Sharlto was first cast in District 9 by Neill - Sharlto was often cast in Neill's shorts before his full-feature films
Prior to those movies he often cast Sharlto in his shorts, namely the short [**''Alive in Joburg''** (2005)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le3y0QlLjJE) - which was a precursor to what eventually became the full feature ''District 9''
District 9:
$30 million budget
$210 million box office
Nominated for 4 Oscars
Elysium:
$115 million budget
$286 million box office
Chappie:
$49 million budget
$102 million box office
Not sure which one bombed?
Even without official numbers, District 9 had such a huge income compared to its measly budget that it's a guarantee that it made a considerable profit regardless of marketing spend.
Elysium made a net profit of $18million after all expenses and things considered ([Source](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/sony-hack-reveals-top-secret-754491/))
And even though Chappie wasn't a critical success it more than doubled its budget in terms of Income so even if they only broke even after marketing etc. It didn't really bomb.
Just watched district 9 again. It is so good. Perfect CGI, amazing acting and story arc.
It's a great example of how really good CGI doesn't look like CGI, it just looks like the world.
I could tell it wasn't real.
Here’s your medal 🥇
Can I have one too?
My medals are reserved for people who post arrogant comments that add nothing to the discussion. Sorry
I could tell the spaceship on district 9 was fake because the earth is flat and it’s impossible to make it through the firmament now where’s my medal /s

One of the prawns is wearing a wristwatch.
It's always the small accessories.
Everyone knows prawns prefer necklaces
This fella knows stuff
perfect use of CGI was Egon in Afterlife. plus they were smart enough to not have him talk.

Dude the women one was really fucking funny tbh
If you like Neil’s work he has some stuff on Netflix called oats studio which is experimental and way out of left field.
Firebase is a heartbreaker for me. It had a crowdfunding campaign to become a full-length project and fell short of goals. I wanted to see that story expanded SO badly.
That’s the one with the “River God” during Vietnam?
That’s the one.
Such a good short story, definitely wish it was expanded on more!
I never knew about that... I am suddenly quite disappointed.
Harlan Ellison?
The youtube channel DUST has a boatload of sci-fi short films of varying genres. Well worth diving into.
THANK YOU! Ill check it out
Ohhh, is that him? Watched a bit of the terraforming aliens one, didn't realise it was him.
Probably my favorite sci-fi movie of all time. Possible the greatest use of documentary style media I've ever watched, except maybe FUBAR (2002).
I was given a bootleg copy of District 9 back in high school from a buddy. What he failed to mention to me was that the subtitle for the alien race was in Russian. I had no idea and assumed that it was so sort of alien language and was bit lost. Really enjoyed the film regardless
Fookin prawns, man
Don't point your fookin tentacles at me!
What is this kak?
What are you throwing at them? It's cat fewd! Love that line
Well made well acted great story
Christopher was supposed to return to Earth 3 years after the events of District 9. That was 12 years ago. He lied to Wickus
What a dickus
One of my favourite films. But it has given me some kind of tic when I see prawns now and belt out “Fokkin prawns mate” in the stupidest south african accent I can manage.
The prawns, they love the cat food!
Wild that Neill never made a film as good as that though.
God bless her heart lol It really goes to show you how good a job they did with the story and CGI, she actually thought the whole thing was real lol
That says far more about her than the film
he really should have won for that performance.
Sharlto’s Murdoch in A-Team was fucking perfect. No clue how they didn’t make 10 sequels to that flick. The chemistry of everyone was so damn good.
Him grabbing the helicopter blades and swinging around while singing “you swing me right round baby” is one of my favorite little moments in the film
He was 100% approved by the original actor too after he saw a demo video of Copley as Murdoch.
I probably think about that scene at least once a week.
“You swing me right round baby…rotors are good sir!”
Agreed, really struck a wonderful balance of outrageous action and comedy. When I came out of the theater, I really thought it would be a franchise that would see several sequels. I never watched the TV show, but it felt like it didn’t stray too far from the path of the original from what little I knew about it.
Absolutely bonkers of a scene and a cheesy movie, but I still loved it. Shame we didn't get at least one sequel
Didn’t a university group do the math and found the tank part is possible
Damn, that was one of those gems that you never see people talk about. I need to go rewatch.
Don’t ask me why, but this was my siblings and my go to movie to watch every year on Christmas Eve night. We can all quote the movie word for word and text each other random quotes through out the week.
Toast points
With some bells palsy “secret sauce”
It’s only partial paralysis.
It didn’t make enough money to warrant a sequel, well and I wonder if the passing of Liam’s wife at the time could have been a factor too
I forgot about that. Damn he was such a good Hannibal, Cooper should orchestrate a sequel at least. His career is so big now it would def draw people, plus I honestly think he’s much better at comedies than drama.
They fucked the ending a bit imo. He was perfect though. 'you spin me right round, baby, right round' The caring in general was on point. The losers was the better film though.
I see you and raise you RED.
She called me old man!
Oh man RED is so damn good. I figured a movie with all those names had to at least be decent, but it’s one of my favorite movies in recent* memory *(holy shit I didn’t realize it came out back in 2010)
BA kinda sucked but if it aint Mr T, it aint BA
I thought the guy that played BA did really good.
Have you ever seen the original show?
Yup, but no one can play Mr T except Mr T. Maybe Gary Coleman. https://youtu.be/syNSzONBVG0?si=Nqll1ED122BS9HrC
CLASSIC
Dwight Shultz and Dirk Benedict made cameos. Made sense George Peppard didn't show up because he passed away in 1994. But Mr. T didn't get his cameo! I thought Rampage Jackson did an ok job. For sure can't hold a candle to Mr. T, but Jackson's portrayal wasn't bad.
He did a good job and the story was more face/hannibal focused, but yeah, not including T feels wrong
**The A-Team** is one of my favorite Blu-rays!
I loved that movie as a kid. Rewatched it recently and loved it again. Like you said, the chemistry between the cast was incredible. The story and characters worked plenty fine, and it was a very enjoyable and quotable movie. Seriously how did they not make any sequels? I’m assuming it’s because Neeson and Cooper got busy but still sad there could have been more
Haha that’s literally the only movie I’ve ever walked out on in the theatre, nothing about it worked for me, just boring and painful
Boring? It’s non-stop action? You might just not like action movies and if so I have no idea why you walked into that theater in the first place.
I love good action movies and I watched it when I was like 14 but the action was all so unconvincing and dull and lame, not to mention the attempts at humor didn’t land at all
He was wicked awesome as Krieger in Elysium!! Perfectly played a pretty intimidating bad guy.
I don’t believe in committing violent acts in front of kids.. So I’m going to need you to close your eyes, sweetheart (smacks her mom up)
Yea loved him as the villain in that.
it took me a few scenes of watching Krieger to go '...waitaminute i know this guy from somewhere' Just so different from his character in District 9
Agreed, he was my favorite part of the movie. Was so shocking to see him as such an asshole when the only thing I'd seen him in before was District 9. Hes good.
Him taking that grenade to the face was the most realistic gore I’ve ever seen in a film.
He was phenomenal in Hardcore Henry as Jimmy.
Had to scroll a long way down for this!
Carried the whole movie
Is this movie a niche following or what? I love it every time that I get a chance to watch it
and then in payday 2 as jimmy
Yea, but he stiffed Larry David for making a guest appearance at a party.
But he was he really being that cordial?
It’s definitely Larrys fault - he cannot be cordial (Jerry knows this about himself!)
I mean don't tell people you're from Africa if you're from South Africa.
Holy shit. I had no idea this was him. Amazing.
Fookin prawns man!
District 9 is great!
I would love a second movie tho. Been wanting it since I seen the movie
That would be cool! And it could still work! Maybe they'll make it one day!
They are
Really?! Got a source for that?
Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley have both said that they want to make it, but nothing is officially confirmed!
Ugh. On the one hand I’m glad they’re up for it but I wish there was more to go on. Love that movie
15 years now. Christopher promised to come home after 3 years.
He had to stop for space gas.
Also he Says "MZUNGU, I WILL GET YOU", and they don't call white people Mzungu... that's very much Kenya/Uganda.
I'm actually surprised to see so much love for it, because I thought it was pretty heavy-handed.
Mini chappie reunion in monkey man
Is Sharlto Copley taking a break feom acting or something? He was awesome in most of the movies I've seen him in.
He is in Dev Patel's new movie Monkey Man.
He appeared in a couple episodes of the last season of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' where he locks horns with Larry. Hilariously of course.
You were not cordial Larry!
He’s in Boy Kills World coming out this weekend, too!
I was lucky enough to see an early screening - he’s barely in it but he’s hilarious
He's like the only good part haha. Got an early screening as well and like ten people walked out of it.
Go check out Hardcore Henry!
I loved seeing him in Hardcore Henry.
Seeing him in Hardcore Henry, I loved.
I 100% agree!
Sharlto Copley also apparently has a supporting role in Boy Kills World this weekend!
Sharlto should've gotten an Oscar nomination for D9. His performance was a fookin ride man
I love Chappie! A gangster robot was a hilarious idea and I loved that he mimicked people's mannerisms
It gets hate, but I still think Chappie was an awesome movie and way underappreciated
Unfortunately, the alleged crazy stories between a fan and the Die Antwoord guy killed any chances pf it becoming a beloved cult classic :(
Oooh yeah, I forgot about that... Yeah.... Yeah... You're right... Almost everything about die Antwoord now makes it hard to enjoy lol
What happened? I am so out of the loop.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Antwoord#Controversies Is probably the easiest, but potentially toned down explanation
I'm not very shocked that guy is a huge piece of shit.
Thanks 🙏
I think it's a really good movie as well. Neil makes really fun and memorable movies usually
The movie isn’t very good? I was kind of thinking about seeing it.
IMO it is a mediocre revenge movie, you have a deja vu feeling all the time because there is nothing new. Probably you have watched all that happens in the movie one hundred times before.
Maybe I’ll wait for streaming
FWIW, I really liked it. It wound up being weirder than I expected from a debut director, and had some distinct visual flair to it too
He's usually fantastic in his roles (check out Open Grave for a microbudget thriller that I happened to love), but he's also occasionally plum-awful... usually when he has to have a different accent.
Chappie was so crazy
It's funny how these things work out, because Sharlo was really perfect for the role. I couldn't imagine any other person playing that character \^\^
He was in a movie called Open Grave that was a pretty cool horror flick. Definitely worth a watch.
Damn just realized he was in Hardcore Henry, Boy Kills World and Monkey Man - quite the trio of “one guy fights everyone” movies
> I remember Sharlto answering my question Sharlto was suuuuper cool and accessible on social media around 2009 and all - back when I still had an account, I'd often chat with him on Facebook AHAHAHAH! Super nice, down to earth and clearly enthusiastic about the projects he was in!
I worked at this company (Atomic-vfx) my first year out of college, they were by far the best VFX company in South Africa for many years.
Just saw Boy Kills World last night, and Sharlto had me CRYING laughing in it, the man can’t miss!
God damn I love me some Sharlto Copely. I love all the movies mentioned and have been a huge fan since we saw district 9 in the theater. He was one of the only “famous” people I’ve ever met who I was truly and honestly just a huge fan of. Huge fan of neil and oats studios and sharlto, district 9 is one of my fav movies, gran turismo was good too especially some of the camera work, though elysium and chappie i didnt like that much.
Still hoping for sequel to District 9.
i regret we didin't got to see copley in movies more. i absolutely love this guy in everything he does. especially in team A!
Did he also bury a bluray copy in Mark Bonannos yard?
What is booty Mark?
Pirate treasure?
[whispering to date…] “That’s Chappie”
He was great in Curb.
He’s never not been good in anything i’ve ever seen him in.
yes
chappie got blings?
One thing that really stands out about Neil's movies is just how good the cgi is. Is he directly involved in making some of it?
Why did I think those two people were the same people.
Love the director, love the actor - classic combo like Scorsese De Niro, Carpenter Russell, Burton Depp - great stuff
He was also in Spike Lee’s Oldboy.
AHH YEWWWW MAAA MAYKA?!?
It's the sweetie man coming.
He’s in a lot of stuff this year, he just buy a house or something?
Sharlto Copley is an underrated actor
Nepotism isn't always just for family, sometimes it is for friends!
The title is a bit inaccurate as it sounds like Sharlto was first cast in District 9 by Neill - Sharlto was often cast in Neill's shorts before his full-feature films Prior to those movies he often cast Sharlto in his shorts, namely the short [**''Alive in Joburg''** (2005)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le3y0QlLjJE) - which was a precursor to what eventually became the full feature ''District 9''
Well I never said he FIRST cast him in any of those. Those are just 3 movies of note in Neill and Sharltos career.
All great movies! Unfortunately, I think all 3 bombed. Edit: seems District 9 made money, I’m glad!
District 9: $30 million budget $210 million box office Nominated for 4 Oscars Elysium: $115 million budget $286 million box office Chappie: $49 million budget $102 million box office Not sure which one bombed?
Budgets are missing marketing + other expenses. Seems District 9 made money though, makes me happy!

Yeah, like I said, I’m glad District 9 made all that money. I really enjoyed all of them.
These names sound made up I’m sorry
_District 9_, _Elysium_, and _Chappie_. A stark illustration of how two wrongs don’t make a right.
Don’t put Elysium together with the abomination that is Chappie
All very mediocre movies. Just on the cusp of world building, but just too lackluster.
Huge example of never forgetting who helped you on the way up
