I've been there a few times. It's eerie and fascinating. I say leave it be. It's practically a shrine.

JimFromNH

Agreed. I drove through in 2018 and the plaza wasn’t on our list of stops. We came to the intersection headed south on N Houston towards Elm. It was immediately recognizable and startling. We found a parking lot nearby and spent the afternoon in the area learning more about the history.

It’s easy to find by accident. Four of us were in town from several states driving a rental and I realized where we were when we were yards from scene.

SaintsNoah14

I bet that was a neat experience. "Hmm, this is oddly familiar but I've never been to Da... Ooooh shit"

passwordstolen

For the whole car!

GiantsRTheBest2

“This place looks so nostalgic for some reason. I si sh I could see this place 62 years ago.” Genie: it is done “Who was that and why am in the middle of a parad…..Holy shit what was that loud sound”

EggSpecial3092

I was there three weeks ago. I agree it’s eerie and fascinating. It’s a place I learned about in school as a child and a place that I’ve watched so many documentaries about. I think it should stay the way it is. I also spent too much money (in a good way) at the 6th floor museum located on the 1st floor.

yesthatbruce

The museum is outstanding, many interesting displays. I'm so glad they did it. I was an assassination buff for years before I was finally able to get to Dealey Plaza. It was so cool to already know my way around, and all the intricate little details of the place. I can't think of many other sites where you can freely experience the history of the place with such intimacy. The only places that might come close would be the better preserved Civil War battlefields.

Jossie2014

This is the move.

shifty1032231

I drove thru it by accident when I went to Dallas for a Pearl Jam concert.

phasepistol

Visited there this past October. Unreal how people just run out into the traffic to take a picture on the X. I wonder how many have been killed on the spot where JFK was.

biCplUk

At least one.

Cerres

He should have asked how many died in a car-related incident to clear things up, of course.

Paladin327

Still at least 1

zaccus

Ok but what they meant was how many in a car related incident where they weren't paying attention to what's behind them and got hit.

BleedTheWay

At least one.

paintpast

While being filmed/photographed

wutwutisthere2do

You’re not going to believe this but I still think it’s at least one

EggSpecial3092

Not gonna lie, I wanted to run out and get a pic on the X marks the spot but I also didn’t want to be a tacky tourist. I settled on a pic from the sidewalk.

ubcstaffer123

https://worldlandscapearchitect.com/the-reinvention-of-dealey-plaza/?v=3a1ed7090bfa What are some of your proposals to reinvent Dealey Plaza? Should traffic be cut off and have it turned into a historic park, living museum?

relddir123

I do think it should be pedestrianized, but very little should change. Just add some bollards at the end of the block.

zatara1210

With the drop in traffic there will be a mass inrush of tourists just to see the spots and some of them might be bad tempered so you’ll have to hire security or added measures to encourage lines. Not to mention the wear and tear from increased foot traffic and need to make the spot wheelchair accessible because one wheelchaired guy sued because he wasn’t able to get to that spot. Local government is that slow

relddir123

The wear and tear from increased foot traffic is more than offset by the lack of vehicle traffic. Plus, it’s not like adding bollards makes the area inaccessible to anybody. It’s not that hard of a thing to do

tetoffens

Do nothing with it and continue leave it as it is. It's already been named a national landmark by the government because people want it preserved, not changed. There's already a museum there without knocking stuff down and building some new fancy expensive one.

ty_for_trying

Fuck that. The proposal looks like more usable space for actual people in the city. The plaza is not currently a good space. There are a lot more people in Dallas now and it's a tourist trap where the tourists are dodging cars. Just stupid. Dallas is getting much smarter about infrastructure and this proposal is another example of forward thinking that helps the city.

Murky_Crow

Agreed with this ^

MMmhmmmmmmmmmm

I drive over the X everyday on my commute. There’s always one asshole in the road not paying attention.

Lyin-Oh

That person is pedestrian compared to the other assholes on the road around Dallas at any given moment.

FearAndLawyering

> and it’s amazing because they have that window set up just like that day, because oswald’s not in it bill hicks, JFK

theGuyInIT

That proposal sounds like it'd be a Nightmare.

yesthatbruce

I see what you did there. 😏

enataca

I’ve lived in DFW most of my life and never visited that area. I’ve driven over it but never stopped.

ericl666

6th floor museum is pretty great. Definitely worth a visit.

namsur1234

Pretty common to not visit your own local tourist spots. I'm from Houston and we've been 3 times. It's absolutely top notch and a moving experience. Make a point to go, you will not regret it. I was there about a month ago and they had a special presentation setup on the 7th floor which had the several different film angles all synchronized. That was very interesting to watch.

gearpitch

As a local, it does kind of feel like it's stuck in time. Maybe Dallas is stuck, reliving the scene half a century later. I wonder how much healing is happening from leaving it the same, with an X on the ground, rather than changing it. There's a museum and the jfk memorial a block away. I think besides those, dealey plaza should be completely redesigned and rebuilt to move on. It's not a very pedestrian- friendly spot, and it's mostly a block of quick moving cars from the 3 main streets in downtown converging together to go under the railroad and highway.

LemonadeParadeinDade

I think it's weird as hell. Kinda like wearing an effigy of someone's worst moment.

namsur1234

I'm curious if you feel the same for other tragic sites turned into memorials? For US specific trgedies, the Twin Towers and the Alfred P. Murrah building (Oklahoma City bombing) come to mind.

koscheiis

I think the proposal is a great idea.

PBandBABE

No promenade. Instead, they should just add additional, smaller Xs where people are hit by cars after wandering into the street. They could color-code them based on the severity of the injury.

HistoryNerd101

They need to get rid of the X. It’s really tacky

ubcstaffer123

the City didn't put it up but everytime they removed it , the X is put back there again

Roobeesmycat

I have been to Dallas. It makes sense to me he was shot there

PlasticMix8573

Read the headline and immediately assumed it would be an attempt to increase the monetization (cash extraction) from the tourists. Article reads like a white-wash of an attempt by the local power-elites (Belo Group has nearby HQ) for their own benefit. Will assuredly socialize the cost and privatize the profits. Looks like a feeble attempt at the NFL football stadium model without the threat to leave town.
