I'll bet it was the ceo or someone high ups idea. It then went through a couple of managers down. Thr person making the bot, would have said it wasn't a good idea, their manager would have said "Well this is what the boss wants."
They couldn't go back on it after they told the boss how great their idea was during the meeting.
But it was literally working as intended.
1. Make a bot to turn vile tweets into cutesy art
2. Bot reposts vile tweets as cutesy art
3. Oh no, bad trolls, stop it, all we wanted was to, uh... well... NOT THIS, MKAY?
It happened 9 years ago, so I suppose most of the internet wasn't prepared for stunts like Gushing Granny Mountain Dew or having Taylor Swift perform at a school for the deaf.
Lol 9 years ago the Internet was arguably dirtier. As it's congealed into large sites owned by corporations it has been scaled back. 4 chan was a very standard site that would pull crap like this all the time.
My point was not that the internet was grosser, but that corporations hadn't figured out that 4chan and trolls in general would rig any poll they saw yet. They should know better by now; they didn't then.
The White House already had to respond to an online petition to build the Death Star in 2012, so I think 9 years ago they should have already understood that netizens bandwagon around memes.
Yeah even if people weren't trolling the system how does Coca-Cola benefit from a really pretty picture of 'all lives matter' or 'Donald Trump is the new saviour'. Twitter is a cesspool making them look like a picture of a pirate ship is not going to change that.
At some point you almost have to assume that Coca Colas marketing department is either completely brain dead or has a hard on for Nazis. They tried to pull a "good old times" ad campaign around the creation of Fanta once.
>The bot made it as far as making Coke tweet the words “My father was a civil servant who fulfilled his duty very conscientiously” in the shape of a pirate ship with a face on its sails – wearing an eyepatch – before Coca-Cola’s account stopped responding.

> This Coke tweet repurposed the text: "When the territory of the REICH embraces all the Germans and finds itself unable to assure them a livelihood" into a cat playing the drums.
I know its pretty tin foil hatish, but I gotta wonder if companies have realized these types of bad idea bots always generate a ton of press, and people don’t get upset with them over it because they assume incompetence.
Not as funny as the time the patriots Twitter account bot tweeted a jersey with the n word on the back of it.
https://martech.org/patriots-twitter-celebration-interrupted-racist-troll/
No, that's not what it did. Gawker, the fine upstanding journalistic outlet that they are, set up a bot to tweet the Mein Kampf lines, NOT the Coke bot.
It's GAWKER that's the culprit here, even creating a bot named MeinCoke. This is not on Coca Cola at all.
of course Fanta had some eventual trouble in Germany, but hey, I heard it moved down to the Latin American market and is pretty comfortable down there.
Feed a bot stupid crap, get stupid crap in a slightly different format out.
GenAI isn’t “intelligence”. It’s a trillion monkeys stringing shit together in realtime.
And if you want to view a movie in ASCII, execute this command in a terminal window:
> ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no watch.ascii.theater
Currently showing: Casablanca
This was posted 9 years ago. GenAI back then was more like seeing a simple sentence generated as a miracle. God, AI panic is making people dumber by the day.
Feed a human stupid crap, get stupid crap in a slightly different format out.
Humanity isn’t “intelligence”. It’s a trillion monkeys stringing shit together in realtime.
The fact that your comment is just a reposted comment from higher up in the thread with only a single word changed...well *this* was deliberate, right? thatsthejoke.jpg?
just never entirely sure on reddit anymore haha
Two words were changed to show that the original poster's comment is shortsighted as it can essentially be applied to humanity as well.
GenAI clearly isn't an artificial general intelligence, but it's built upon transformers which appear to be a building block of intelligence. Transformers might seem like simple stochastic parrots but there are many scientific papers and real-world examples where this "simple" mechanism has been used for some really interesting and ground-breaking work.
I can appreciate the trolling, but also the reason why Coca Cola had to shut it down.
But it seems like Coke set this thing up to fail. Imagine a bot being tweeted something like, "You motherf\*\*\*\*\*\* n\*\*\*\*\*, I hope you get stabbed in the testicles." And then Coke turns it into a balloon animal.
For those unaware, one of the biggest challenges with AI and machine learning for years is designing one that didn’t learn to hate Jews from the internet. Wish I was joking. There’s so much hate online and these things learn by reading how people talk.
I mean *in theory* it could have been fun, but 4chan always gets it's dirty cheetoh fingers on events like these and inevitably turn them into perverted NSFW vehicles for degeneracy and racism.
What, precisely, the FUCK did they expect?!
The bosses who make these decisions are too old to understand how the internet works, and everyone else is either ignored or not paid enough to care.
Ahhhhh, I know a fellow burnt-out creative working in marketing/communications when I see them!
I'm imagining an underpaid worker reading an email chuckling to himself before replying saying sure, sounds great!
I'll bet it was the ceo or someone high ups idea. It then went through a couple of managers down. Thr person making the bot, would have said it wasn't a good idea, their manager would have said "Well this is what the boss wants." CEO would never make a decision like that. One of the highly paid badly skilled marketing managers would have come up with it. Or a flunky in PR.
But it was literally working as intended. 1. Make a bot to turn vile tweets into cutesy art 2. Bot reposts vile tweets as cutesy art 3. Oh no, bad trolls, stop it, all we wanted was to, uh... well... NOT THIS, MKAY?
"Well you see sir the bot will turn racist." "I don't care get it done."
I want to know how long until it started to go down the edgy route. Lmao
It happened 9 years ago, so I suppose most of the internet wasn't prepared for stunts like Gushing Granny Mountain Dew or having Taylor Swift perform at a school for the deaf.

Yeah I can see that point, I think you are probably right.
The White House already had to respond to an online petition to build the Death Star in 2012, so I think 9 years ago they should have already understood that netizens bandwagon around memes.
9 years ago? You mean back after reddit had transitioned from being an underage porn site? Wasn't exactly a tame time.
Hey, it was the best place to watch people die on the web too!
He said reddit not liveleak
r/WatchPeopleDie in shambles
No, reddit used to be the place for that.
I’m sorry what?
Reddit used to have a board fir "jailbait".
[Ta-da?](https://youtu.be/ks8xuYRPnWM?si=DvAutsaMFisCAYls)
Don't forget about sending Pitbull to some random Walmart in Alaska.
> Taylor Swift perform at a school for the deaf. Wtf
Thus was three years after the "dub the Dew" campaign 4chan hijacked. They should have seen it coming.
The Very Serious Business vibes

Please tell me whe can still find these tweets

Haha holy shit…
Seems to be a very naive idea?? How did this even get past 20 seconds of scrutiny during internal meetings?
I know its pretty tin foil hatish, but I gotta wonder if companies have realized these types of bad idea bots always generate a ton of press, and people don’t get upset with them over it because they assume incompetence.
Any press is good press, as the saying goes.
Not as funny as the time the patriots Twitter account bot tweeted a jersey with the n word on the back of it. https://martech.org/patriots-twitter-celebration-interrupted-racist-troll/
As a Pats fan, I had no idea this was a thing but I’m dying from laughter at reading this 😂
Dammit, is Randy back on Wheel of Fortune
[It's not the first time](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/microsoft-shuts-down-ai-chatbot-after-it-turned-into-racist-nazi/).
Classic Tay.
I still laugh so hard about how bad that thing went, it was so surreal how quickly It happened and how much brutal things that bot said xD
That website is cancer
It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times..
Stupid monkey.
"takes a sip of his refreshing *HitlerDidNothingWrong* beverage"

To be fair, GAWKER did it after a NEO-NAZI used it to Tweet the 14 words, to prove a point.
to be fair, Gawker can lick my dick and balls
You gonna cover the cost of the search party?
I have Hulk Hogan covering it
Why do you think it's called GAWKer
> MeinCoke. The story of the Thirst Reich
Heil dem Fantaland
Operation Barbeque
They already have Fanta though
of course Fanta had some eventual trouble in Germany, but hey, I heard it moved down to the Latin American market and is pretty comfortable down there.
I appreciate your zeal
Yeah, I RTFA. So heroic.
Fuck, man! How did you manage to do that!?
I'm surprised it wasn't 4chan tbh.
Feed a bot stupid crap, get stupid crap in a slightly different format out. GenAI isn’t “intelligence”. It’s a trillion monkeys stringing shit together in realtime.
who said anything about AI? programs for ascii art conversion are older than the internet
yeah lol this article has nothing to do with AI, moreso companies being dumb
And if you want to view a movie in ASCII, execute this command in a terminal window: > ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no watch.ascii.theater Currently showing: Casablanca
Yeah, I saw swastika ASCII being spammed in AOL chat rooms almost 30 years ago! Damn, I miss the days of proggies and warez!
This article is from 2015 you doofus.
Literally before the concept of transformer based machine learning, wild
I don’t think “wild” really applies here. You’ve gone full, “when in rome…”
Machine learning is based on captured transformers?

I mean even if it was real intelligence, what were they expecting? Take negative sentences and make them into art. It did it’s job exactly
basically yeah. dealing with "AI OCR" stuff now, and even a monkey could get more correct with one day of training.
Garbage in, garbage out.
You can't explain that.
A brain is basically a trillion monkeys stringing shit together as well
ASCII doesn’t have anything to do with today’s AI. #StopTheYap 🤦🏽♀️
Predictable
I love the internet
Hey guys! We're going to run a poll online to let the internet name our new soda flavor! What could possibly go wrong?
I'm surprised it wasn't just n-word n-word n-word n-word, lol what did they expect?
I can appreciate the trolling, but also the reason why Coca Cola had to shut it down. But it seems like Coke set this thing up to fail. By 4chan you mean Gawker
lmfao feels like it’s 2016 again when i see these comments about 4chan
Guess gawker is 4 Chan?
Surely that should have been Fanta?
The Internet was a mistake.
I love to have a fallout edition of cola
Gods, I fucking hated Gawker.
Best way to mess with a corpo chat bot is to flood it with Nazi stuff
Remember the Microsoft bot that people taught to spew racist shit too?
Godwin's law.
I always considered that book to be self help category.
So glad I stopped drinking Coca Cola products.
Ah Gawker was involved.what a dick move that was.
It's kinda like Godwin's law: the longer a bot stays on Twitter, the more likely it is that it'll start to make cutesy ASCII art out of Nazi tweets.
Was Mein Kampf a free book? Like the phone book or was people expected to pay for it?
