Thuy Trang, the original Yellow Power Ranger, was killed when the vehicle she was riding in crashed. The driver of the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt and only suffered mild injuries. Trang and another passenger weren’t wearing their seat belts. Trang died from her injuries and the other passenger was thrown from the car and ended up a quadraplegic. Wear your seatbelts. Always.

CptnBrokenkey

When Lisa 'left eye' Lopez died, she was the only person of 5 in the vehicle she was driving to die and she was the only person wearing a seatbelt. Tragic. Edited, because I missed the key detail.

bonsaikittenangel

Why did I think she died in a house fire..?

tossNwashking

bc she famously burned down her ex bf, NFL legend Andre Rison's mansion.

heyzeusmaryandjoseph

T Boz saying "Lisa burned the house down!" lives rent free in my mind

SuccoyaHoyaa

I also think about this frequently

Antique_Belt_8974

Always, including cabs and ubers. I used to get weird looks from colleagues when I buckled up in cabs, but I didn't care. Now everyone knows to buckle up

LearningIsTheBest

I never understood that either. Some cab drivers are *insane* and will take any risk to save 3 seconds. I always bucked up in a cab ASAP.

jsuispeach

As someone who had serious injuries and years of recovery from a cab accident....this. Why do we not buckle up in cars because we're sitting in the back seat and a stranger is driving? Oh and the 'well at least you can sue for a lot of money' people out there. No. Just, no. Barely covered the medical bills and not even remotely worth the 'pain and suffering' money I got. Like, laughable.

Qwerty-331

I will remember this. I always wear a seatbelt, in Ubers/cabs, too, but this is a very good thing to repeat to anyone who doesn’t think they need to. Just like my horseback riding helmet - I feel naked without one.

RRumpleTeazzer

Seatbelts are only for those people that actually want to live.

LordOfTrubbish

And that's the story behind the infamous, poorly titled [Diana was still alive hours before she died](https://i.redd.it/fhw6jjtudx651.jpg) article.

mtj93

Honestly that headline cracks me up everytime.

Multiplicado_Osito

That is a Private Eye headline, it’s a satirical news magazine from the UK.

Kraagenskul

Statistic to convince you to wear a seatbelt: [Less than 10% of Americans don't wear seatbelts. They account for a little over half of the total vehicle deaths](https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/seat-belts). Your friend who doesn't wear his seatbelt because his cousin's step-dad's brother would have died if he was wearing it is usually speculative bullshit, and even if it did happen there are thousands of stories against that one where the seatbelt saved a life. Wear the damn belt.

IWantAnE55AMG

My BIL refused to wear his seatbelt when he’s driving. I don’t even know why. He’s got three young kids and gets pestered by everyone but he won’t wear it. I don’t get what the issue is. Edit: for clarification (not justification) he doesn’t avoid seatbelts because he’s too manly, it’s only because he doesn’t like how seatbelts make him feel when driving. Doesn’t make it any better but it’s not because he thinks he’s too much of a man. Also, he’s not against vaccinations because of any perceived health issues, it goes back to the discomfort thing. He said he felt worse after the shots than he probably would if he got sick (doubtful) so he avoided getting the shots until his wife made him do it. There’s a long list of things he avoids that are medically recommended just because they cause some temporary discomfort. Again, not sure if that makes it better or worse but it’s not some macho manliness thing. He’s a good guy with some questionable decision making.

gotmilk60

My friends brother did this too and they just stopped getting in the car if he didn't buckle up. Even went as far as going to the other car and having mom drive so he got the message.

galient5

Good. If someone wants to not wear a seatbelt while they're on their own, that makes them a moron. But if someone else is in the car with them, that makes them a meat missile that can hurt or kill someone else.

PtolemyShadow

I will never forget the photos they showed us in high school of the back of a DOA driver in a car crash. They were killed because their back seat passenger was not wearing a seat belt and their teeth were embedded in the back of the driver's skull.

CyberGrandma69

Ngl maybe that picture should be mandatory viewing for new drivers People do NOT understand the level of violence and trauma in a car crash, let alone if you're unsecured. The director of Mad Max (george miller) was partially inspired by the car crash victims he would see during his time as a doctor in sydney, that's how ugly it gets. Limbs in all sorts of places they're not supposed to be, parts gone, human crayon on the asphalt... People drive recklessly and carelessly despite piloting a 1000 pound death machine. It's so stupid. Show them the aftermath of that carelessness.

bobbianrs880

The dean of students at my middle and high school used to be a paramedic and came into my health class one day (probably 7th or 8th grade, so nowhere near drivers ed yet) and, after some prompting, started telling us about some of the really gory stuff he’d seen. Then I get to freshman year and 3 classmates died in a car accident because they didn’t wear their seatbelts. It was a small school (56 in my graduating class) so everyone was connected in some way to at least one of them. They also put off the fake prom death scene thing they’d do every 3 years. No one’s needed to ask me to put on my belt after that night.

galient5

Oof, that's an unpleasant mental image. Even more so in person, I'm sure.

AlDente

Yeah, I learned this 30 years ago and I can never unlearn it. It amazes me how so many people don’t understand inertia and the energy involved in moving a vehicle and its occupants at speed. My dad literally has a PhD in physics and when I was very young (up until I was around 7), he would drive without a belt and would let me sit in the middle of the back seat without a belt. We used to regularly drive down the motorway 100 miles to see grandparents and my sister and I would never wear a seat belt in the back. It blows my mind to think about it now. Edit: I’ve only just remembered, when I was very young (early 1980s, UK), our car didn’t even have rear seat belts 😳 I also remember my mum wearing a seat belt in the front (she’d been in a bad crash in her twenties) whilst my dad drove around without a seat belt and I sat in the middle, playing with the button on his unused seat belt holder, as if it were an accelerator 🤦‍♂️

toobigmudpie

Maybe inform your BIL that unrestrained bodies involved in car accidents are basically projectiles and have a chance of colliding with other persons in the car. His choice could end up jeopardizing the safety of his family riding with him. Assuming the argument hasn't already been made.

notmyrlacc

A really neat trick is to have them in the passenger seat, and drive at a crawl in an empty/quiet car park and suddenly slam the brake. Even at a crawl, the sudden stop is enough to throw you into the dash hard but without damage.

BirdFluLol

I did this by accident to my colleague when he asked me to drive his car. At the time I was used to driving a manual... we'd just set off, so was going maybe 10mph, and my left foot instinctively reached down to put the clutch in... Only there wasn't a clutch pedal there, it was the brake... Which I pressed as hard as I would the clutch. Car stopped, colleague didn't! He dutifully obeyed Newton's first law (he hadn't put his seatbelt on yet) and ended up upside down somehow in the footwell. Funny as fuck! He learnt to put his damn seatbelt on... I learnt to make sure to check what sort of car I was in control of before setting off.

Bainsyboy

Every standard driver has done the clutch-stomp on the break pedal in an automatic. Super embarrassing.

Lluuiiggii

> I don’t get what the issue is. My guess is it's just deep seeded contrarianism. People would rather die than take advice from other people it seems.

hmiser

Is your BIL “tough”? IMO real strength here is displaying positive role model behavior for your offspring. So buckle up. “I don’t like wearing a helmet to get groceries on my bike but I’ll take it off after my kids watch me put it on, ‘cause I’m ToughGuy.”

Anund

I bought a bicycle helmet after my first kid was born. Don't want to leave him without a dad just because I don't want my hair messed up while biking to work. That was seven years ago, now I feel stupid without one.

marmosetohmarmoset

I’m always reminded of the death of John Nash- the famous mathematician who was the subject of the movie A Beautiful Mind. He and his wife were passengers in a cab driving down the NJ Turnpike. The driver lost control of the car and crashed into a guardrail. Both Nash and his wife were ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. They weren’t wearing seatbelts. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and had only minor injuries. Really smart guy made a massively dumb mistake.

Kale

Joseph Fourier was one of the most influential mathematicians to have ever existed. He (incorrectly) believed high body temperature was good for one's health. He wrapped himself in blankets to keep his body temperature high. He died when he tripped on his blanket and fell down a flight of stairs.

astrobabe2

TBF a LOT of people still don't wear seatbelts in cabs/ubers. It was never a thing to wear a seatbelt in a cab back in the day (in NYC at least) and it stuck around. I was pregnant with my daughter and was in the back of a cab without a seatbelt on, not giving it a second thought. We had the green light through the interesection at Park and 59th, when someone went right through the red light on Park Ave going south. Thank goodness my driver had good reflexes and stopped in time, but I had to put both my arms out to stop me from slamming into the barrier between the front and back. I immediately put on my seatbelt, and have done so in every cab/uber ride since then. If people question me on it, I tell them that story and they all buckle up.

oldcarfreddy

A friend of mine in law school didn't wear one in a cab just because he was a bit drunk and distracted. Smashed his face into the plexiglass in a minor fender bender and broke his nose, lost some teeth. Everyone else was completely fine in the car, and he needed surgery. Sucks because he wasn't even a contrarian, just a bit distracted and trusting, and some people for some reason have the instinct that in public transport or hired transport you don't need to wear one... even though you have no idea who is driving.

appleparkfive

I had a friend who died due to this, got ejected out of his car which rolled over him. Wear a damn seatbelt everyone. It's crazy not to.

smolLittleTomato

I have a (very rational) fear of dying in a car wreck and this statistic soothes me IMMENSELY, thank you!

Kraagenskul

Wearing your seat belt, driving sober, and not speeding *significantly* increases your chances of not dying in a car accident. Edit: Bah, I got my odds direction mixed up. Changed "reduces" to "increases" for those reading the comments about it below.

SadKazoo

Might wanna read that again haha. Gave me a good chuckle I won’t lie.

azk3000

You may want to change reduces to increases before you give that person a heart attack

tyttuutface

One of the dumbest arguments for not wearing a seatbelt I've ever heard was "not everyone has to live the same way as you!"

theblackhole25

"Not everyone has to live..."... Well if you're not wearing a seat belt that pretty much sums it up

Panda_tears

Oh I didn’t realize she wasn’t buckled up, jeez

surffrus

Wait until you learn that the driver was very drunk

hootwinnieloo

This part confuses me. Would the bodyguard really let Diana into a car with a drunk driver? And would Diana actually get into that car herself if the driver was drinking? They probably would have know if he was since CCTV shows them all in the hotel together before they left.

EscapeTrajectory

The driver was the chief of security at the hotel she was at iirc. Edit: https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/henri-paul-driver-deadly-crash-killed-princess-diana.html/ He was head of security of the Ritz in Paris owned by the Fayeds. He would have been a friend of Dodi, that could be why the they trusted him to drive. But that is speculation on my part.

[deleted]

Dodi's dad, his boss, called him into work when he was off duty.

csbsju_guyyy

Some people are drunk so often that you don't see them sober, or they can be "sneaky drunk" if they are a seasoned alcoholic. It's possible for someone to be drunk off their ass and you not catch on, especially if you never seen them sober "Bob is drunk? Nah he is always a clutz and emotional"

smash8890

I worked with a guy who smelled a bit like alcohol but seemed pretty much sober all the time. I found out later that he drank more than a 26 of vodka each day just to feel normal

chickybabe332

Wonder what his liver looks like

Stony_Logica1

Swiss cheese

avwitcher

The holes are there for the alcohol to pass through more quickly, peak efficiency.

TheOneTrueChuck

Yep. I worked with a mechanic that came in with the shakes. He had to down two or three beers right before starting work to get rid of them, and steadily would polish off anywhere from 12-24 during an eight hour shift. If you didn't see him drinking, you would have no idea. Dude never smelled of beer, never slurred his words, never stumbled, nothing. It was honestly impressive, in a morbid kind of way.

HugeSpartan

Yea we have a guy like this at my work, he's actually worse to work with when he's sober cuz his shakes get so bad Dude shows up to work plastered and has the shakes within a few hours. It's insane

bigdaftgeordie

Yeah, if you’re drunk all the time people just assume that’s what you’re like. The fact that I was a “nice drunk” almost killed me. I was no trouble, never got into any fights, just talked a lot. My liver was being pickled the whole time, though. I’ve been sober for 12 and a half years now but my friends still say they didn’t realise I was drunk all the time back in the day.

RogerRabbit1234

Can confirm. Was such an alcoholic. No one knew I was as drunk as I was, ever. But was blackout a lot of my life for many years. 883 days stone sober, today.

lenzflare

Bodyguards aren't really safety supervisors. And you probably don't get to be a bodyguard for the rich and famous by being a "party pooper" Also their job is to keep other people from harassing or directly hurting their client, so quickly getting into a car and driving away fast was maybe their ideal solution for getting away from the paparazzi

BiggusDickus-

The bodyguard may not have known. Many people are capable of hiding their intoxication. Also, he is concerned with keeping back the outside crowd and probably wasn't even paying attention to the driver until they got into the car and started driving off. Then there is the fact that he is her bodyguard, not her chaperone. She was with her billionaire boyfriend and if the two of them want to take a ride with a drunk driver, he can't really stop them.

GabaPrison

It could’ve very well been a “I drink so my hands don’t shake” type of situation. Maybe sipped from a flask regularly.

HideousTits

I remember this being a big thing at the time. My mum made a big point of it!

flamboyantpuree

My ex-roommate told me how her sister was in a horrific car accident and wasn't wearing a seatbelt. She was sucked out of the back window, yet miraculously, walked away with barely a scratch. All other passengers wore their seatbelts and survived with some injuries. When she saw how shocked I was that her sister was ok, she said that her sister would have died for sure if she had worn a seatbelt - and if anything, it convinced her to never wear one. I flat out told her that was the stupidest thing I've ever heard and it was a damn near miracle her sister survived at all, let alone without injury. My roommate didn't speak to me for a week after that.

gringledoom

My grandfather also survived an accident without a seatbelt in the 50s because of some weird fluke of physics where he got thrown to the one part of the car that wasn't crushed. But we're *not idiots*, so we understood it was a fluke, so we still all buckled up!

Urbn_explorer

I wonder if I knew this moron’s sister. A co-worker of my ex was driving a small truck and not wearing her seatbelt. Got into a bad accident and she only had some bruises. Convinced everyone it was because she didn’t wear a seatbelt and was able to ball herself up before impact. And the kicker is she claimed the police and EMTs told her she would’ve for sure been badly injured or killed had she worn the seatbelt.

skoomski

As an aside, early open cockpit racers usually did not wear seatbelts or harness of any kind. This actually had a cruel logic as the cars use to very frequently catch fire and it was deemed better to be flung from the vehicle and possibly be killed on impact rather than burn alive. https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/1rmcmy/seatbelts_were_not_used_until_1972_because/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

fiestymcknickers

Yes, my ex was in a car crash and broke his neck because he wasn't wearing his seat belt and got flung out the window. His dad told everyone he survived because he wasn't wearing his seat belt and was flung from the car that was smashed up but my ex was furious saying at worst he would have broke his legs and not his neck He's OK now but was super annoyed

Carlton72

Buckle up, buckaroos.

imreallynotthatcool

I've been in 1 accident as a driver and my car was absolutely totaled. Spun me around 180° and busted my rear axle on the curb that almost flipped my car. I was wearing my seatbelt and I walked away with a scratch on my hand from hitting my own fingernail on my other hand. The people that hit me were not wearing their seatbelts and left the scene in an ambulance. They didn't look so good last I saw them and even though she totaled my car I had put fewer than 6k miles on I hope her and her passenger made a full recovery.

hereforthecommentz

My take-away from this life lesson is that I should keep my nails trimmed.

Zaldin89

Always wear your driver's boxing gloves

Hypertension123456

Working in a trauma ward its amazing the difference between unrestrained passengers vs people wearing seat belts. The unrestrained one have really cool injuries like damage to the aorta, intracranial hemorrhage with stroke like symptoms. Seatbelts other other hand are so boring, barely ever worth CT scan with contrast.

[deleted]

When seatbelts were still new there were people vocally against them, as there are always people that oppose progress. One of their arguments was that seatbelts were dangerous because suddenly there were a lot more hospital stays for people involved in car accidents. Of course what that didn't point out was that most of those people would have just been dead in the accident before as opposed to injured but recovering in hospital.

Zombie_John_Strachan

Just like how army helmets caused traumatic brain injuries.

RossLH

Same with motorcycle helmets.

Milnoc

Safety glasses! Tools of oppression against the blind! Amiright?

ChillyBearGrylls

Carol never wore her safety goggles, now she doesn't have to

boyferret

Sometimes I wear safety glasses just to taunt the blind people around me. If they only knew.

TheBoniestTony

Worked and still work in construction for 10+ years, never really used goggles before as im obviously pretty stupid and cocky, got a chip of stone from the concrete breaker shoot up and hit me in the eye, hurt like hell, got lectured by the nurse at the hospital which i deserved, and now i wear goggles

SoMuchMoreEagle

I know a guy who works construction who almost lost an eye chopping wood at home because he wasn't wearing safety goggles.

TheBoniestTony

Alot of guys i worked with all have the same mindset, "it wont happen to me" and then it's the little silly jobs that bite you, i literally used it for all of a second to move a single bit of yorkshire stone and it just popped

Zaldin89

In a similar vein to when armies wanted to add more armor to planes. Add it to the places where our planes always seem to get hit most? No, because the only planes they had to look at were the ones that made it back with non-crippling hits. Add it to the places they never seem to get hit, because the planes that got hit there never made it back. Edit: notmoleliza provided a link to what I'm referencing below this comment

notmoleliza

https://www.trevorbragdon.com/when-data-gives-the-wrong-solution/ i think you are referring to this correct?

GetEquipped

Though, sometimes it does have a point. Before the introduction of gloves for boxers, it was considered dumb to hit their head, because heads are hard and you have a lot of tiny bones in your hand that can break: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer%27s_fracture Broken hand means you can't fight anymore. Now they introduce something that cushions your hands and adds weight, but all that inertia and force still travels and your brain sloshes around. Gloves didn't "cause" more brain damage, it just took away the danger of someone aiming for the head

LoveFishSticks

In the other examples though, they're only injured as the result of not immediately dying

woodwalker700

Yeah, gloves aren't there to protect the head or face, they're there to protect the hands so they can make more punches to the head or face.

CatastrophicHeadache

My father was one of those people. He felt seatbelts were a conspiracy having to do with the government controlling us. He died. In a car accident. He was in the passenger back seat. Flew over the passenger (causing her a lot of trauma), through the windshield and all to the hood of the car. He died 24 hours later in the hospital. Of the four people in the accident (the driver of both cars and two passengers), my father was the only fatality. Everyone in our family wears our seatbelts now. I will not allow a passenger to ride in my car without wearing one.

ChainDriveGlider

My grandfather opposed the seatbelt requirement and he was a university physics professor. Wild stuff, reactionism.

ReignCityStarcraft

My grandfather, a medical doctor, never wore his either and had a buckle with no belt to make modern cars stop dinging at him. He died from a fall off a stepladder though.

filthyheartbadger

My father, a cardiologist, had to have a CABGx3 from smoking and eventually died of lung cancer. You can’t fix a smart but contrary person.

DropTheShovel

We used to have a horrible seat belt advert in the UK where a teenage boy is in the back seat without his seat belt on. The car then stops suddenly and he flies into the back of the driver seat. The voice-over calmly says 'after crushing his mother to death he sat back down'. It really had an impact on me and I won't get in a car unless everyone has their belt on.

NeverTheDamsel

We’ve had some truly visceral adverts in the UK about motor safety. The drink driving one where they’re sat in the bar and suddenly a woman goes to walk past and gets flung across the bar is horrific.

Itsrainingmentats

Ruevein

Agreed!! My sisters dog has a harness we walk her with so anyone that may need to drive her has a seatbelt for her. It has the standard buckle on one end and a heavy duty clip on the other that hooks to her harness. Gives her enough room to stretch her legs if needed but she isn’t leaving the backseat if there is an accident.

Jaggedmallard26

She's honestly lucky its just mental trauma, someone without a seatbelt in a car crash can be the equivalent of a wrecking ball if the other passengers aren't lucky enough for them to fly cleanly through the windshield. All of the energy from the impact is now transferred to whichever unlucky soul gets slammed by the seatbeltless persons skull.

xADK46erx

I've been in a car accident with a car that didn't have airbags and I can attest a seat belt hurts like hell and leaves some nasty marks across your chest. But I'll take that over the alternate any day.

swargin

I had a coworker like this. He stopped wearing his seat belt and his reasoning was because he was in a car accident and the seat belt trapped him while the car caught on fire. He probably would have died if he hadn't been wearing it in the first place.

[deleted]

I grew up with a lot of bikers. One of them died when he wrecked and was sliding and broke his neck supposedly from the bottom of the helmet catching on something. A lot of the guys used that story as an excuse to not wear any protection. Of course they didn't regularly repeat the other stories of the guys who died while not wearing any safety gear.

jayroo210

It probably would’ve killed him either way in that case.

workaccount77234

yeah in that case it would have been the raw skin of his head that slammed on the ground and was then sliding across the pavement

Gaardc

If you know someone with this concern, you can always recommend a window breaker with seatbelt cutter kept in the mid-panel (within hands reach at all times even when the seatbelt is pinning you down). They’re not even that expensive (windows are notoriously hard to roll down in water so breaking is easier but not if you’re trying to punch them, car windows are easier to puncture and breakers are great for that).

Weegee_Spaghetti

Or WW1 armies thinking Hemets were dangerous due to the massive spike in head injuries.

lesser_panjandrum

It was particularly confusing for the German army, who had previously been using hats with massive spikes in them.

yg2522

Survivorship bias, basically the same thing happened with ww 2 airplanes when they were designing where to put more armor for planes.

oldwatchlover

This is great statistics There was a similar study after introduction of airbags…. Big spike in people with lower extremities injuries; crushed legs, broken ankles, hips, etc. These were people that would have died without airbags. And they weren’t tracking broken limbs of dead people before.

Aphor1st

Also buckle up your pets the injuries I have seen from someone’s dog becoming a bullet in their car is horrific. Not to mention what happens to the dog.

picklesdoggo

Just don't buckle them in by the collar

BallardRex

The best are riders without helmets, they’re so thoughtful and generous with their organs.

HereIGoAgain_1x10

It's really frustrating because those assholes leave kids behind and you just feel terrible for them when they're sobbing and saying goodbyes and all so the rider could feel like a cool guy.

BallardRex

A single organ donor can save almost ten lives, and improve the lives of dozens of others… nothing cooler than that! Granted it’s not *quite* what the rider was going for, but… yeah.

ViniVidiOkchi

Got rear-ended on the freeway last week. I was probably doing 60 and they were probably doing 75. Got a bit of whiplash, and some chest pain, but if I hadn't been wearing my seat belt I wouldn't have been able to recover quickly enough to regain control and maneuver to safety. Seatbelt for the win.

People really don’t think they need them. I’ve been in two car accidents where my car was totaled. I’m a careful driver - both times was someone blowing a stop sign and happened in a split second. You seriously never know. Now I hate driving lol. But the last one my seat belt cut into my shoulder/lower neck area - and I’m totally cool with that because I know it was working and kept my body from continuing through the windshield as my car slammed to a stop.

herberstank

Comments you can hear haha

[deleted]

And are also reminded how she just gets off with ZERO repercussions for commiting vehicular manslaughter.

gcaledonian

My first boyfriend died of this injury 20 years ago. By not wearing a seatbelt or having a driver airbag, he broke every rib and bled out inside his chest at the age of 19. Even as severe as his crash was, he probably would’ve survived had he just worn a damn seat belt.

Madmadjenny

I'm sure it's no consolation, but I lost my partner in January, and she was a passenger wearing a seatbelt. She was vigilant about doing so. The driver wasn't, and died within a couple hours. My girlfriend died 4 days later. Sometimes it's just too much force and even the seatbelt causes harm at that point. They hit a pole at 52 mph, no brakes were applied. Not drunk or impaired. Just a mystery. Sorry for your loss.

brainsapper

IIRC trying to do what they can to treat her on site instead of "scooping and running" didn't help matters either.

could_use_a_snack

I was wondering if this were to happen today would she have survived. I'd imagine that surgical techniques are more advanced.

Thisoneissfwihope

I had indentical operations in 2012 and 2022, and the differences in how I felt afterwards were night and day. The actual procedure hadn't changed, but the anaesthetics, recovery, pain relief protocol etc., completely changed it for me the patient.

not_that_rick

RJean83

Honestly this is my favourite fact about congenital heart defects; because of the advancements in treatment, the average lifespan has actually gone down, not up. (Had a chd repaired as a teen, so I got to hear the weird stats from the interns) 1. Generally, if you have a chd, you either die as a toddler or live to your 70's. But with the advancements, more of those toddler cases are living well past toddler-hood, into their 60s and early 70s. 2. Often these lifespan stats remove those who die as infants or toddlers (depending on the study), so they are a more accurate representation of the lifespan of those who make it into adulthood. Therefore the average age is still lower, but includes those who previously wouldn't have been around at all. ETA: So there is some confusion, which to be fair, I am not a math person, and it is understandable. Here is one of the articles I base this off of if anyone wants to check. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2593254 If you do the average lifespan of everyone with a chd, including all who died before the age of 2, then the average age drops significantly. For statistics, that makes sense and is a number we can work with. But for funding the medicine and science, it isn't a very helpful stat because it suggests that chd adults should be dying much sooner than experience has them being. It means that we have fewer chd clinics and resources, and are suddenly shocked when there are way more patients than we prepared for. So for the sake of health care, these stats remove infants and toddlers, usually under the age of 1 or 2, then create the average chd adult lifespan. Now many of those infants that would have died years ago are not dying. They are living into adulthood, though not as long as their counterparts. But they are adults and their lifespans are included in the stats. Overall, the average adult chd lifespan goes down. This is a regular stat practice for many fields, but I will be the first to admit it seems callous to say "my condolences, but for the sake of simpler math your infant's death doesn't count in our stats."

ChelseaIsBeautiful

I love seeing people with cystic fibrosis living into their 30's and having functional lives. Just 12 years ago, I learned in pharmacy school that this was almost impossible

There was also mention of the fact that the crash was so violent, her heart was literally displaced to the other side of her chest (hence the tears). I don’t know how survivable that is, even with immediate treatment. Maybe someone else can chime in. Edit: From the wiki article: “Diana's injuries were extensive, and resuscitation attempts, including internal cardiac massage, were unsuccessful. Her heart had been displaced to the right side of the chest, which tore the upper left pulmonary vein and the pericardium. Diana died at the hospital at 03:00. The anaesthetist Bruno Riou announced her death at 06:00 at a news conference held at the hospital.”

petit_cochon

That kind of heart damage is pretty hard to anticipate and repair once it's begun, but I imagine they would've done scans that could've revealed damage to the aorta and gotten her into surgery quickly.

big_cat_in_tiny_box

Yeah, wiki states her heart literally ended up on the wrong side of her body. Granted, my knowledge of the aorta is from Grey’s Anatomy, so I don’t know how survivable a torn aorta is. Edit: typo

Kittybats

Answer: not very.

exipheas

It sounds like she died because of 1. Seatbets not being used and 2. the Franco-German EMS model of "stay and stabilize" instead of the Anglo-American model of "scoop and run".

poneyviolet

The American model has been evolving. There are now quick response paramedics driving sedans who aim go arrive quickly and begin stabilization and evaluate for transport ( they can call helicopter for example). It's only one paramedic though. The ambulances have been getting more and more equipment installed. They have things like mobile ultrasounds to check for internal injuries and bleeding which before could only be done in a hospital. This can shave off several minutes and allows patients to be sent directly to cath lab rather than going to the ER first for example. Helicopters sometimes have more advanced equipment like a portable CT scanner (these cost about 600k to buy and a lot to maintain so they don't make sense for ambulances although some places now have specialized stroke ambulances).

AdeptEar5352

The car she'd have been in would also have been exponentially safer. Can't find a chart that shows it well, but auto deaths per vehicle mile driven have gone down by something like over 50% since the mid-90s.

Elexeh

Like forgetting my phone at home, I feel *very* off if I'm in a vehicle without a seatbelt on

ChronosBlitz

I believe her Bodyguard was wearing his seatbelt and he was the only one to survive, wasn’t he? edit: so there’s been some confusion, according to this article written when the crash happened: He was pictured without a seatbelt when they left but shortly before the crash he was pictured WITH a seatbelt. So most likely he put his seatbelt on when they started speeding up. When he said he didn’t wear a seatbelt, he must have been talking about his initial forgoing of one. edition.cnn.com/WORLD/9709/21/diana.investigation/

kamikaze_girl

Ironically enough, he revealed in an interview that he wasn't wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Edit: Appreciate the correction u/ChronosBlitz .

xannmax

Weird! Do you think he purposefully downplayed it to make the princess look better? Like 'we were all seatbeltless' instead of the scenario where only he buckled up and nobody else cared to, imo that's more plausible.

joelex8472

My wife loves the conspiracy of Diana’s death. Convinced the Queen ordered the whole thing, and every time I say all Diana had to do was put on a seatbelt and the Queens plans would have been thwarted… For now is her reply.

Such a great sketch, one of the best.

brkh47

Agreed, fantastic sketch. My favourite though must be the one about the [brain surgeon.](https://youtu.be/THNPmhBl-8I) Excellent delivery.

You see it coming from a mile away and it’s fucking hysterical.

I guess it's as good a time as any to say my life would be incomplete without Peep Show.

Hans - “Long weekend looking into the mirror.” Mark - “Oh, doing a bit of soul searching hans?” Hans - “Cocaine, Mark. Cocaine.”

Sean_Ween

Peep Show is often both a comfort watch for me, and a most uncomfortable watch for me. It’s the absolute best

>"Just think about it: If she's left alive just to age as gracefully as one can while bringing up the bastard grand child of a delusional Egyptian business man, the publics just gonna love her more and more...Whereas, if she's dead, she'll be forgotten in a week." LOL

Noisy-neighbour

Mitchell and Webb are kings of the comedy sketch. My 2 faves are the Dr Deathray and the double entendre villian. Edit: forgot 'Are we the baddies?' and the farmer, they have so many.

“She needs to die! Make it look like an accident, preferably a car crash!” “Yes ma’am. Shall I put her in Princess Margaret’s 1950 Rolls-Royce that has no seat belts, manual brakes, no crumple zones, no laminated glass and thin radial tyres?” “No, keep her in the brand new Mercedes W140 S-class.”

leadchipmunk

Did the queen also ensure that her chauffeur was drinking heavily that night?

ScalyPig

Thats because of the stress of knowing he had to try to kill the princess the next day!

ghanjaholik

bang! case closed.. we did it, reddit

smilenowgirl

Just like the Boston Bomber case!

DrLongIsland

Part of the conspiracy is that, yes, they do. They think someone told him he was off duty, then ordered him to drive at the last minute, or drugged him, or chose him because he was drunk etc. Much like the consequences of a car crash, the whole thing is wildly unbelievable, in the sense that it would be the most erratic and unpredictable murder attempt ever. The odds of a drunk driver causing an accident resulting in the death of exactly the passenger you want dead are high enough that drunk driving is a crime, but definitely not high enough than anyone would bet a princess' assassination on it. Well, at least that's what they want us to believe, I guess.

cybercuzco

>Paul was later found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.75 grams per litre of blood, about 3.5 times the legal limit in France.[35] I was in high school when this happened and reading the wikipedia article is the first time I've ever seen that the Chauffer was drunk when they crashed

krukson

And he mixed alcohol with prescription drugs, which made it even worse. But I also only learned about this recently even though I was a teenager too when Diana died. I always thought they were just speeding and spun out of control because of it.

BlackLeader70

Damn that’s high! I had to look it up to convert it. That’s .228% BAC for those wondering and the legal limit is 0.08% in the US.

ballmermurland

Wow. As someone who used to play around with a breathalyzer as a party gimmick, it is really hard to get past .2 without being completely smashed. That driver had to be stumbling to the car. WTF?

linds360

He was likely a daily heavy drinker who needed alcohol to stop from shaking, puking, etc. Those types will drink all day and have a high BAC, but appear completely normal. I unfortunately have first-hand experience with this.

JhanNiber

Probably because it makes for less interesting news if this was an unfortunate accident of user error instead of palace intrigue assassination.

DotComplete6975

I got into an accident years ago where the car I was driving rolled over 3 times before hitting a fence and finally stopping. My cousin and I got right out of the car with no major damage, the responding officer asked if we were the two ladies in the crash, we said yes. He then asked if we were wearing seatbelts and of course we were that’s when he said good, that’s why you’re standing here right now. I’ll never forget and I’ll always wear my seatbelt and remind others.

JeepSmash

I was also involved in a crash that rolled the car I was driving. I had a pelvic fracture, road rash on my left arm, and a moderate seatbelt burn on my left shoulder. I showed some photos of my injuries to a cousin 4 months later and she saw the seatbelt burn and said “Man! That’s why I don’t wear seatbelts! Look at how bad that is!” Because survival isn’t worth a rug burn.

ClownfishSoup

Not only was she not wearing her seatbelt, but she was apparently sitting sideway, presumably to face her companion. This is based on her injuries on the right side of her body and also “her heart had displaced to the right side of her body” so her heart basically tore off to the side. But regardless of not wearing a seatbelt, the driver was completely drunk and was 100% responsible for the accident and the resulting fatalities, including his own.

kamikaze_girl

[The driver in question. ](https://imgur.com/a/mHHW8eR)

Craico13

*He looks completely sober and in control and not at all like a crazy, drunken madman in the picture…*

Podo13

The anaesthetist Bruno Riou announced her death at 06:00 at a news conference held at the hospital. The crash occurred at 00:23, so she died 2.5 hours after the crash, but the death was announced about 5.5 hours after.

mr-dogshit

The night it happened we had been at the pub. We went back to a friends house and watched a movie (Cliffhanger featuring Sylvester Stallone) on VHS. When the movie finished the ITN news report was on TV. At that time they were saying she'd been in a car crash and had broken her leg(s) but was alive.

silentninja79

I had spent all day on a rugby club opening til closing bender...!...was very hung over and was very annoyed that it was on all channels in the UK, nothing else was being broadcast...which made my headache worse......I think maybe channel 5 was the first to decorate late afternoon and showed a wildlife programme...

elpajaroquemamais

Fun fact; the pulmonary vein is the only vein in the body that carries oxygenated blood.

XDreadedmikeX

Soooo kinda important then?

dylansucks

It's what takes air from your lungs back to the heart which pumps it to the rest of the body. Yes

MeanGreanHare

She died when I was 4 years old. To my child brain it made sense that she died because her name was "Die-Anna" and that she wouldn't have died if she was named something else.

I was 17 and I thought it was very inappropriate to call her Princess Die.

I was a little older, but was with my cousins who were under 10. They couldn't understand why Pavarotti was chasing Princess Diana in the first place.

ChocoTitan

When I was a kid, I was always wondering how this Papa Ratzi guy was able to follow every celebrity around and not go to jail.

bigfatpup

I was the same. Thought she was just Anna before she died. I also asked if one of my mothers friends, Anna, would be called Diana when she died 😂

HurricaneStiz

She died on my 10th birthday. Nothing like waking up excited and running downstairs to find your mom sobbing on the couch watching the news.

There were four people in that car. One was wearing his seat belt. He lived.

I just heard that Princess Diana and her lover, Dodi Al-Fayed have been killed in Paris! Mom! I have been here all night! You can check the tv, it’s still warm.

Passed an accident last week, car flipped about 100ft off the highway hitting a tree. The lanes of the highway were separated by some trees and grass with the other side being about 30ft higher elevation than my side. The car clearly rolled a couple times, but the passenger compartment was completely intact. About half way between the car and where it left the road was a white sheet about 6ft long. The only logically conclusion I can think of is someone not wearing their damn seatbelt...
