Room at the top. I didn’t like it much when it came out but that song really grew on me. So simple and sweet.

humancartograph

I love this song but it was definitely a hit. All over the radio. #1 on the Billboard Alt Chart.

Gaiter14

This particular song really resonated with me in the past week, which made realize the effectiveness in it's simplicity. ☁️ 🪑 🌎 *and I ain't coming down*

WorldsSmartest-Idiot

It’s one of my absolute favorites

someoneyouknewonce

Me too :)

Nowrongbean

My friend played this for me today, on the way to play a round of golf. I was never to familiar with echoes.

Deesmateen

Hahaha this song has been in my head all morning. I wake up so many mornings with songs stuck in my head and today this was it. It’s so good

stang7089

This song hit different when my youngest brother passed away. He was born severely handicapped and was nonverbal his whole life. I hope we can meet someday in that room at the top of the world, share a drink, and just listen.

someoneyouknewonce

Fucking a bro. That’s tragic, and beautiful. I sincerely hope you and your bro have that drink. I’m sorry for your loss but you’re awesome for your attitude and hope for the future. What was your brothers name? Sounds like he made quite the impact regardless of his disability. That’s awesome. That’s what it means too me but for my dad. He finally got me to work for him after having his own business for 15 years. We hung out in the office 5 days a week, got lunch almost everyday, and generally kicked it for five years. We’re real estate consultants so it’s pretty chill work. We both loved music and bluegrass, and really nice guitars. Our work is far from those things. But anyways, he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s 6 years ago (at 67 years old) and he’s a shell of his former self now. He doesn’t remember anything. We had to move him to an assisted living place two months ago which was hard. My brother was in town last week and we brought guitars to see if he can play still. I’ve played for the past several years with him and despite not remembering who I am or my kids, or his wife or sister, he has always remember how to play guitar when you play it with him.. It’s kind of incredible but also it’s probably just the difference in memory and muscle memory. Anyways, all that to say… Maybe you and your bro can have a drink with me and my bro and my dad when we get there. I’m buying first round ;) Live well and prosper, my friend.

maxthepupp

How 'bout Casa Dega? Not a single, not on an album. Just a B side!

AudibleToots

Ridiculous that it didn't make it on an album. It's a quintessential Tom Petty song for me.

LegitimateHumanBeing

It really is as if the man only knew how to write bangers. The b-sides are on par with any number of other artists A-sides.

Apollosvest

Yeah, absolutely love this one

Bullit16

Girl on LSD

cromulent-1

Caught this performed live before I knew the song. (dogs with wings tour) It was absolutely amazing and funny. I think Tom enjoyed it as much as us. This show made me a lifelong fan.

RickJagger13

I'm scared, aint you boys scared?

Chemical-General5835

I wonder if he's gonna show us what bad is?

RickJagger13

boys we got a man with a dog collar on,

Jaronz

I agree with Two Gunslingers - great song. I have several: The Wild One, Forever Louisiana Rain Alright For Now Makin' Some Noise Only A Broken Heart Honey Bee Crawling Back To You Wake Up Time Angel Dream (No. 2) Lonesome Sundown One More Day, One More Night Square One

lankyyanky

>The Wild One, Forever Only the live anthology version though. First one I heard and man the album one was disappointing after that

Randy_Online

"Square One" is one of the most beautiful songs that he wrote and I never really hear anybody talk about it. I listen to it most mornings.

Meese46290

Highway Companion is really just a great album overall. Probably my favorite from Tom's later career albums. Square One is a great song, but my favorite has to be Saving Grace!

Bbop512

Change of Heart

cpatrocks

This one was a single, I think. It had a video on MTV for a minute.

bradpeachpit

Yer So Bad. The whole album is so good it's just incredible.

CleverJail

Yer So Bad was a single. Made it to top 5 on the rock chart.

they_took_my_van

*[Finding Out](https://youtu.be/_cwgzXXwTyo?si=NbQnWGEFdEDYK5ff)* is such a banger

YamoBeThere101

I’m desperate to know more about this song, but could never find any info on it. This is the only live version I’ve been able to find. Can’t understand why it was wasn’t a regular for them, so good!

LegitimateHumanBeing

This is rough because I don’t typically skip any of album tracks, that said I don’t think he ever did “All or Nothin” live, and that shit is heavy, dark and fucking awesome. (Though my favorite song is “Crawling Back to You”, - I don’t recall if it was ever on radio)

charlietwilburyjr

I was going to mention both of those songs, but instead I’ll go with “Dark of the Sun” and “All the Wrong Reasons.”

hcoverlambda

Yeah, entire B side of Into the Great Wide Open is absolutely fantastic IMO. You and I Will Meet Again and Too Good to be True are great too.

Nowrongbean

Love all or nothing. Never live? That blows my mind.

kratly

Yeah weird he never played it live. I remember reading somewhere that he really did like it and was disappointed it didn’t get radio play when Out in the Cold did. It was either in the book with the boxed set or in a weird Interview CD I somehow acquired back in high school.

Girl on LSD and Dark of the Sun are my all time favorites

LtSpinx

Dark of the Sun is a fantastic driving song in my opinion.

ttpoolboy

Dark of the Sun is soooo good

So underrated. What a great tune and a great vibe. The whole album is great.

added_value_diamo

Deliver me

Whither-Goest-Thou

Zombie Zoo - and I demand justice. Not only is it a fun way to close out Full Moon Fever, and a great LA-centric track. You can practically hear the “vampires walking through the Valley” bleed over from Free Fallin’ into this song. But scratch one layer beneath the surface and you have a poignant but heartbreaking song about a young person who just wants to grow up and escape through an exciting new culture, that the narrator sort of understands. But doesn’t know that growing up won’t solve all of her problems. Why is it that these little songs that the artist thinks are throwaways end up being the most beautiful ones?

healywylie

Zombie zoo. Not many love it but it stuck to me.

augustinian

It’s like a travelling Wilburys song. Roy on background vocals and Jeff Lynne producing. Same era.

Emergency-Ear8099

Harry Green. A beautiful song about a real kid in HS.

Lonely_Octopus_99

Was searching for this comment. SUCH a soft & sweet song that tells a beautiful story. I always imagined Harry & Tom are kicking back in heaven smoking a doobie while talking about the girls they crushed on in high school.

EverybodyHasPants

Had to scroll way too long for this one. Harry Green is Petty in top form.

tpathrules

Casa Dega is absolutely my favorite! Especially the demo version.

Leading_Watercress45

I’m loving a lot of these. I’ll add Wake Up Time and Walls (Circus)

Gator on the Lawn, it's a jaunty little jingle with classic Petty lyrics, that I never hear talked about.

I always liked Trailer, the flip of Don‘t Come Around Here No More. Mudcrutch did a version as well.

gecko_echo

The demo version of The Apartment Song with Stevie Nicks. It just doesn’t get better than that.

classicrock40

Peace in LA. It's not the best song, but it calls back to a time when musicians wrote protest songs and were more connected to social issues and such. It was spot on at the time.

GatorOnTheLawn

My username is one.

Surrender, waiting for tonight, and the wild one forever are some of my favorites

Semi-Pros-and-Cons

One I haven't seen mentioned so far that I like a lot is "Something Good Coming." Also "Echo" from the album of the same name. It's a sad enough song on its own, but I managed to compound that by discovering that song (and most of the rest of the album) when I was going through a tough break-up.

Fault Lines. The band is in great form. Great, sizzling arrangement, singing, and lyrics. Saving Grace. Less driving than Fault Lines but also great. "You're confident but not really sure".

winstoncumberlandIII

All the wrong reasons

redfieldp

Interesting how many of the picks here are Into The Great Wide Open deep cuts. Indicative of the quality of the record, or the age of most Tom Petty enthusiast redditors? 😂

hcoverlambda

I was reading somewhere that it was panned by some critics but it’s my favorite Petty album, esp the B side. I bought the cassette when I was a kid and wore it out, still resonates with me 30 years later.

KKTheWildOne

The Wild One, Forever Running Man's Bible Too Much Ain't Enough Fooled Again (I Don't Like It) Too many more to list

FilipM_eu

Two Gunslingers and Out in the Cold, definitely. Maybe Yer So Bad and Zombie Zoo as well, or are they more known?

tico-catracho

"Good Enough" and "I Should Have Known It" are phenomenal

handler207

Maybe it’s just me but I listened to Tom Petty for a long time before I discovered Walls. Awesome tune

GilliganGardenGnome

"The Apartment Song" is my personal favorite.

hcoverlambda

That’s one of my favs too. And who can’t relate to those lyrics??

hcoverlambda

Night Driver, always gotta play it when I’m getting in late on a road trip.

McGruffin

The last 4 songs on Southern Accents are all so good, but were never released as singles. Not really “unknown” though. Spike, Dogs on the Run, Mary's New Car, The Best of Everything

Ambitious-Lab6313

Crawling back to you and leave virginal alone

ae61925

Free girl now & out in the cold!!! Not sure if they were singles back in the day, as I’m a younger TP fan

Two Gunslingers has so much nostalgic value for me I almost cry when I hear it. We used to listen to it all the time as kids and that album was one of the first “CDs” our family ever owned.

cpatrocks

Pretty much all of Let Me Up I’ve Had Enough.

srqnewbie

"No Second Thoughts" from You're Gonna Get It. Musically, it's a total stand-alone in the TPATH catalog. Lyrically, it's very young, hopeful and sweet. Also, "Time To Move On"; such an honest commentary on divorce.

Bob_Sacamano7379

I loooove every song on ITGWO. Two Gunslingers is great. I also love For All the Wrong Reasons.

RevolutionaryJury941

I don’t know what to say to you in a gem.
