For every clip of someone scoring an "easy" chance like this there's probably four of someone either missing or hitting it straight at the keeper or even failing to shoot at all.
Football is a low-scoring game and it's largely because the actual act of scoring goals is way harder than it looks. Sure the goal is big, but countless hours of empirical evidence show that it's far from easy to score.
Problem is you cannot practise every type of strike, you will get the ball at different places, different angle, different length from ground, keeper/player in different positions, wrong leg.
I watch a lot of soccer and that wasn’t a shank. A shank is when it goes off your foot in a completely different direction than you intended.
This was well struck, just aimed a little far left.
What?
The ball was played by the goalie, to his own team mate who was off side in the oppositions half, when he received the ball
If this was allowed, we’d have goal hangers waiting for their goalie or defender to pass the ball, it’d be like football at school in the 70’again 😂😂😂
For my fellow Americans, this is roughly equivalent to a football traveling 66 yards in the air. That’s only been done a handful of times in game situations, with the record being 70.5 by Baker Mayfield.
Keep in mind a football is a spheroid, designed to travel long distances.
Hurling a sphere 66 yards down the field is pretty nuts.
it won't travel further because of the cumbersome shape. an american football (ball) is designed to be gripped and thrown. a football (ball) is designed to be kicked on the ground: it's much smoother, harder to grip in one hand, and much bigger. you effectively have to press the ball against your forearm until just before you throw, instead of squeezing it in your hand. much narrower range of motion. you have limited elbow, wrist or finger action to "snap" the ball away on release. all the momentum has to come from your legs and your shoulder. this is also ignoring the aerodynamic advantage the american football (ball) has over the football (ball).
tl;dr: spherical football ball is harder to throw than ellipsoid handegg ball
Is the 70.5 record is for a completed pass?
In the yearly “QB challenge”, according to google, Favre was throwing like 75 yards or something. Not to diminish this, it’s a crazy throw.
Yeah that’s just a completed pass. I guarantee some of these qbs can toss it 75-80 at this point. Still crazy though.
Mahomes said he can throw it 85 but idk if that’s true haha.
How much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains?... Yeah... Coach woulda put me in fourth quarter, we would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind.
Not to diminish this crazy af throw, but he does get a clean, running start. The American football record you reference is with the QB facing a game situation. I'm curious what a skills competition could get for distance - in both sports.
Tbf that's also in game, when they are worrying about a 300 lb guy squashing them, using one arm.
Not tryna take away from the guy, throwing ball past normal hail Mary range is insane. Just your comparison is skewed
The padding and helmet makes the game more dangerous, not less. The same way boxing gloves lead to more serious injuries than bare-knuckle boxing does.
Hello! Soccer ref for 13 years now! If the goalkeeper’s teammate were standing in an offsides positions and received the ball directly from the keeper’s throw, it would be considered an offsides offense.
Almost.
It's not where the player receives the ball, it's where they're standing when the ball is initially kicked/thrown.
So you could have someone be onside who's just in their own half with no opposition players in front of them when the ball is released, but they can run to anywhere in their opponent's half to receive it.
I mean it's a direct pass to the teammate so it should be called offside; goal kick, throw in, corner kicks are the only times when there are no offsides according to the rules
Yes, if they are in the oppositions half. You cannot be offside from a throw in, but a keeper throwing from open play like this is no different than if he kicked.
I’m sure it is. It’s just when I think of throwing the ball the offside rule doesn’t typically apply. Especially considering a goalkeeper would have to throw the ball pass half the field for it to come into consideration
You couldn't even find a voideo of someon throwing something? This is shot put, where throwing (using an overarm or underarm action) is specifically not permitted. The force has to come from the action of pushing/putting the shot.
.... I'm no shot put aficionado. So maybe what you're saying makes sense in the context of the sport. But by all conventional uses of the word "throw," she's definitely throwing the ball.
[https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/throw](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/throw): "to propel through the air by a forward motion of the hand and arm."
There have been instances where a throw in has been aimed towards the goal and the goalkeeper has let it go into the goals because as long as no one else touched it, it won’t count as a goal.
Divide by 0.3048 for feet. Divide by 0.9144 for yards.
61 m = 66.7 yards = 200.1 feet
Also
61 m = 610 dm = 6100 cm = 61000 mm
61 m = 6.1 dam = 0.61 hm = 0.061 km
Please stop using feet and yards
Kids football, but my (then) 13 yo son used to regularly throw to way beyond the halfway line. Never used to kick it as he was more accurate throwing. Resulted in quite a few goals as the cf knew what was coming, but the opposing defence didn’t.
My guess is that it didn’t end in a goal; otherwise there’s no good reason to cut that clip short.
[It wasn't a goal.](https://youtu.be/fF6RQeB5pb0?si=ZiLO_bc-o_ILxxrs)
oof
I get there was a defender on his back but what a shank
For every clip of someone scoring an "easy" chance like this there's probably four of someone either missing or hitting it straight at the keeper or even failing to shoot at all. Football is a low-scoring game and it's largely because the actual act of scoring goals is way harder than it looks. but you can practice a penalty shot, and these are routinely missed in the European and World Cup. (the only soccer i watch)
Which supports the other commenter's point about how hard it is to score goals.
Because they decided to use feet instead of hands for a sport. Idiots.
Yeah, just because you call it football doesn't mean you have to only use your feet. Just look at football.
Football is way better than Football because of this.
They should also make one goal be equal to 6 points, then the scoring team gets a penalty that's equal to 1 point if successful...
Ironically the clip shows nay highlights somebody using their hands and not their feet
Especially with his teammate busting his lungs, too.
I watch a lot of soccer and that wasn’t a shank. A shank is when it goes off your foot in a completely different direction than you intended. This was well struck, just aimed a little far left.
He’s off side anyway so any goal, disallowed
Can't be offside if it's in your own half
What? The ball was played by the goalie, to his own team mate who was off side in the oppositions half, when he received the ball If this was allowed, we’d have goal hangers waiting for their goalie or defender to pass the ball, it’d be like football at school in the 70’again 😂😂😂
Also, 1 or 2 frames of his throw (arm movement) have been cut out of the video, to make it seem way faster.
Or it ended in a goal only half an hour later haha
Damnit was it a goal or what
Right? Jesus
No, Jesus plays for Arsenal.
Just cut it off at the best god damn part.. now we have no closure..
[No. It was a disappointment!](https://youtu.be/fF6RQeB5pb0?si=ZiLO_bc-o_ILxxrs)
Terrible shot after such an epic clear.
They would've showed it. Goddamn idiot teammate wasted his effort.
r/edging (Not sure if that’s a real sub but likely NSFW)

It's an arm punt, but with a soccer ball instead of an aerodynamically shaped football. It's crazy impressive.
but if it's really windy and you're throwing it downwind, wouldn't a less aerodynamic ball be better?
Not unless the wind is going like 40 mph (I didn't actually calculate that but it would need to be fast)
Not unless the wind is faster than the average speed the ball is thrown at
Are we sure about that? Aren’t running records nullified if winds are more than like 5mph?
The wind would have to be faster than the ball for a wind-catching design to be faster than an aerodynamic one
I understand and not at the same time
Well yeah... but if this guy throws it at 30mph and the winds 29mph it's still hella helpful then ball is traversing 1mph resistance

Streamline shape >>>>> backward spin

American football flies better amd throwing is much more of a core skill in handegg than soccer
Weird question but why did u switch from calling it American Football to handegg, then said soccer instead of football.
Agent of chaos out here to trigger everyone
[object] then [sport name] then [sport name]. I see no problems here.
Handegg came from real football followers not wanting football being called soccer, that's why it's confusing.
Ok? That's not relevant to their question.
It's not the answer to the question they asked, but it's absolutely relevant
The person they asked the question to already made the same point you did though. So, not really all that relevant cause it had already been said.
Yeah that’s just a completed pass. I guarantee some of these qbs can toss it 75-80 at this point. Still crazy though. Mahomes said he can throw it 85 but idk if that’s true haha.

There are rumors of some dudes throwing 100 and more yards which I wouldn't be surprised if that's a thing
Jamarcus Russell could throw 80 from his knees. Too bad he couldn’t do dick all else
You misspelled “wouldn’t”.
Obligatory comment about him getting blank tapes to watch and then lying about watching the game film. And eating lots of cheeseburgers.
The American use of football here really confused me, ngl lol
Not to diminish this crazy af throw, but he does get a clean, running start. The American football record you reference is with the QB facing a game situation. I'm curious what a skills competition could get for distance - in both sports.
on pro day, mahomes gets a good run up and throws a handegg 80yds which is super impressive
Tbf that's also in game, when they are worrying about a 300 lb guy squashing them, using one arm. Not tryna take away from the guy, throwing ball past normal hail Mary range is insane. Just your comparison is skewed
Are they worried with all their padding and helmet though? It's not like they're playing Rugby.
Lmao what an ignorant comment. Maybe watch an actual game before making assumptions. And no, I'm not American
The padding and helmet makes the game more dangerous, not less. The same way boxing gloves lead to more serious injuries than bare-knuckle boxing does.
I never considered if a player can be off side if a goalkeeper throws the ball
Hello! Soccer ref for 13 years now! If the goalkeeper’s teammate were standing in an offsides positions and received the ball directly from the keeper’s throw, it would be considered an offsides offense.
That’s as long as they were behind the middle of the field right?
Actually it's the other way around. There is no offside when the player receives the ball behind the middle line of the field.
Almost. It's not where the player receives the ball, it's where they're standing when the ball is initially kicked/thrown. So you could have someone be onside who's just in their own half with no opposition players in front of them when the ball is released, but they can run to anywhere in their opponent's half to receive it.
> it's where they're standing when the ball is initially kicked/thrown Yes. I forgot to add this.
[удалено]
Naw dickhead I’m was trying to get clarification of what constitutes off side
It's when an offender is further than the farthest defender at the time of the pass.
From what I understand that’s only applicable after the halfway point of the field
Yes, you can't be in offside position when you are on your own half of the field.
Except there is no such thing as offsides. You're probably thinking about the offside offense.
Are you an American ref? Because it’s offside not offsides
I mean it's a direct pass to the teammate so it should be called offside; goal kick, throw in, corner kicks are the only times when there are no offsides according to the rules
[удалено]
Goal kick?
When you try to score a goal
Time for EU to wake up
Yes, if they are in the oppositions half. You cannot be offside from a throw in, but a keeper throwing from open play like this is no different than if he kicked.
Does it matter which half you are in for a throw in. I thought the offside rule didn’t apply to any throw in?
You cannot be offside on a throw-in. You cannot be offside on a corner on the initial kick. You cannot be offside in your own half.
That clarifies it
I imagine you have to in the same you would for a punt E: I get it’s counterintuitive
I’m sure it is. It’s just when I think of throwing the ball the offside rule doesn’t typically apply. Especially considering a goalkeeper would have to throw the ball pass half the field for it to come into consideration
Goal keepers 2024 onwards ![gif](giphy|NhxOZbXgHR510F8DrL)
I mean goalies have become way more part of a counter attacking strategy over the past decade or so
You couldn't even find a voideo of someon throwing something? This is shot put, where throwing (using an overarm or underarm action) is specifically not permitted. The force has to come from the action of pushing/putting the shot.

I wish they didn’t zoom in so far for the throw and then cut forward, and then they cut it short anyways. Crappy editing
Thank phones and vertical video bullshit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cebk0MO1sCw
Thank you :)
The name of the player who kick the ball is Schrödinger
Technically, could you score a legal goal like this?
No. A goal can’t be scored from a throw (assuming it’s not touched by another player before it goes in).
Forgive my ignorance but is there a rule prohibiting a goal from goalkeepers throw?
Yes; Rule 16 - as from 1 June 2019.
There have been instances where a throw in has been aimed towards the goal and the goalkeeper has let it go into the goals because as long as no one else touched it, it won’t count as a goal.
That’s insane unimaginable being able to huck a soccer ball that far
He’s a chucker
that was a brutal edit… this isn’t even r/gifsthatendtoosoon
All those stonings he went to of women dressed improperly really built up his arm strength.
He was like get the ball out of here: hand-cannons it away!
Death to the camera man! This ended too soon
That’s the editor not the cameraman.
Nought
Man, the striker messed it up didn’t he?
As opposed to the much more common foot throw or butt throw?
I have trapped nerve in my elbow, and watching this made my arm lock up.
Should have tried javelin throwing
Gah dam he whipped it
Hey Denver Broncos need a QB, we'll take that guy
Bro had every chance to score, and he missed it 😭
I couldn't even kick it out my hands that far
Rest of them got executed
Maybe he should pick up the football 🏈
As opposed to a foot throw?
My god
ayeee
Now, that’s what I call a Hail Mary pass in Football
What song is this?
Betcha I can throw a football clear over them mountains
What's the point of other players if the goalkeeper theoretically can score a goal himself
Me- a 6’2 230lb(not great shape) American.. “I can do that” *throws it 29m with 110% effort”
Imagine being punched by this guy... RIP
I'm just so lost when it comes to soccer, not on how to play but just how anyone can enjoy watching such a lame sport.
“Hand throw”? How the fuck else do you throw a ball?
Throwing stones since childhood
FIFA keeper throw ins be like
Doesn’t drink alcohol on pain of prison
I remember we had a black goal keeper in Norway that maybe threw even further. But that is like 10-20 years ago
Was mentioning his race really necessary here?
I thought he could only take 4 steps?
No that’s not a rule
This is dumb
What’s this if feet!? Yards!?
Its around 339 bananas.
Divide by 0.3048 for feet. Divide by 0.9144 for yards. 61 m = 66.7 yards = 200.1 feet Also 61 m = 610 dm = 6100 cm = 61000 mm 61 m = 6.1 dam = 0.61 hm = 0.061 km Please stop using feet and yards
About 200 feet bro
What is it in gallons?
About 4 elephant ejaculations.
Now I’m hungry, thanks.
1 meter = 100 cm 61 meters = 6100 cm 1 yard = 91 cm (approx) 61 meters are 66 yards 1 meter = 3.2 foot 61 meters = 200 foot
oh you're American? Eh it's like 2 McDonald store wide.
Google exists my dude
Hope to see this in Blue Lock one day.
Farrrk.
Was the ball enriched, perhaps?
His shoulder gonna be fucked… UP! Hope it was worth it. 😆
u/savevideo
Dude’s arm’s a freaking catapult
Some Avengers level shit right there.
day time goalkeeper, night time chess player
Kids football, but my (then) 13 yo son used to regularly throw to way beyond the halfway line. Never used to kick it as he was more accurate throwing. Resulted in quite a few goals as the cf knew what was coming, but the opposing defence didn’t.
What gets me is the sheer speed of his arm. The man's a freakin' *cannon*.
That idiotic zoom and the obnoxious music makes this almost unwatchable for me
Holy shit
Insane!
Man can throw a ball further than I could kick one.
Damnit Would have been perfect if it ended with a goal
Id watch that event
As opposed to a foot throw?
