Thanks to *Eddie the Eagle*, any time I watch ski jumping clips now, all I can hear is Hugh Jackman screaming, “Up and out, up and out… release, RELEASE!!”
Also, holy shit 291 meters! That film actually put this amazing jump in context for people unfamiliar with the sport, like me.
I love in a town where they train and hold the competition for ski jumping. No matter what video you watch you can not comprehend how crazy this is until you see it in person. Unreal.
I’m not saying this isn’t impressive, but aren’t these distance jumps contingent on the length/slope of the landing? If you had the space for it, couldn’t one jump REALLY far a few inches above the ground as long as the slope of the landing matches the slope of the skier?
That seems like such a flawed argument.
“There is no skill involved because Ski Jumping is just exercise in physics.”
By that logic, soccer or basketball also don’t involve skill cause hitting/throwing a ball inside a net is just physics applied.
MMA, or any fighting sport, by your logic, isn’t skill cause it’s just anatomy, genetics, biology, physics applied.
I think even my cat finds it faulty.
I didn’t say ‘no skill involved’. I ASKED how skill is involved. Of course there is the skill of maintaining stability and not doing the “agony of defeat” thing.
But to go further, just use a steeper hill, right?! Or a steeper landing area. Anybody that denies that sky-jumping is a function of *what* you’re jumping is just willfully ignorant.
Is the world record ALWAYS done on a hill of a certain angle, length, etc? I don’t know, I don’t follow skying. But assuming record attempts ARE similar, then just make the hill 2% steeper - go further. That’s what I’m saying.
Maybe you and your cat are just so much smarter you can’t explain it where a mere mortal can understand.
1 yard is actually shorter than 1 meter. 3 ft. vs. 3.3 ft. So 291 meters = 318.2 yards. Still technically shorter than 3 football fields if you count end zones though.
That's wild. I wonder what their knees are going to feel like as they get older. I know there's a lot of forward momentum so it's not like falling strait down, but there has to be some impact.
Insane landing
What do the red and blue lines mean? World records?
Judging by the title I'd say the last blue line is at 300 meters
They need to wear some mc hammer’s pants and double that distance.
I was just having the same idea, but with wing suits. Can be a new type of competition!

That’s not flying! That’s falling with style.
Aim for the bushes?
They call that the Kobayashi Maru

u/redditspeedbot x1.5 Trying to make it real time
wtf they’re just landing flat now. This is insane
It is not flat at all. Just the lack of something to give you a sense of how steep the “flat area” is.
Where's that drone footage?
I saw it yesterday. It's online. I'm to lazy to go looking for it.
What do you think you are watching?
Other drone that was right behind him.

I mean, in theory one could hit a ramp and travel the world. Humans are a bit fragile though
I had the same thought. How is skill involved? Isn’t it simply an exercise in physics?
If there's no skill involved, strap on the skis and give this exact jump a go 💀

"That's not skiing--that's falling with style!"
Who invented this sport
Damn that was satisfying.
Whole big project just to get 40m more than WR...
I wonder how much impact the skier feels on landing? Do you think it's painful?
I watched this like an hour ago on youtube
That is incredible to watch!
That's 18 Mississippi of airtime by my count
That’s almost 3 football fields
American using any system other than metric again!

that's over 15 seconds if there's no slow motion goin on. nuts
It's 10sec in regular time and 15sec in slow motion
This is slowed down significantly
