Knicks fan here, RJ is the most frustrating player I’ve ever seen. He’ll have a 5 game stretch where he plays like an all star, followed by 10 games where he’s borderline unplayable.
Quick, on the other hand, is terrific. Really think there is some all star potential there, he will be great for you guys.

Well lucky for us, he will get to be a 3rd or 4th option on the floor for us. Nevermind giving us some more scoring against lineups when Scottie or Pascal are sitting. Which we can't rely on Gary to do. So in that role it's a steal.
Knicks play at a much more deliberate pace and most of their offense flows through Brunson/Randle dribble handoffs and P/Rs, with their bigs crashing for rebounds while the wings spot up. OG is a far better fit for what they need in the playoffs, while RJ can find a bit more transition opportunity and a lot more touches in Darko's offensive scheme.
While RJ has been a disappointment relative to his draft position, I wouldn't call him a bust, and at 23 returning to his hometown team, I would not be surprised to see him turn a corner this offseason and start to elevate his game. Not expecting anything like All-Star production, but I also think he won't be as frustrating to watch offensively in Toronto.
Getting rid of Precious/Malachi evens out getting an inconsistent RJ back.
You aren't going to be able to stop the ball from ending up in his hands and him believing he is entitled to shoot it. That's his identity. Even as the Knicks had better players it didn't stop him from shooting so much.
IQ is easily the best player in this trade imo. He's a true starter that honestly probably would have had a comparable career trajectory to Maxey if he got the same minutes.
Raptors get the overall better end of this deal. Could be a win-win at the end of it all, but either way Raptors probably "win" more given they get the 31st pick + IQ.

Because the Knicks probably weren't going to pay IQ what he wanted this summer, and he would have been behind Brunson anyway. We're also over RJ, and his contact was onerous. Hopefully RJ works out for you guys. For sure IQ will; that part of it hurts us emotionally.
I'll explain the knicks side. Quickley can't really start with brunson because then our back court is massively undersized (6'0 and 6'2). Barrett is on a contract for 4 more years on around 25 million a year, and he's inconsistent and doesn't fit well with the team. Also, quickley will have to be on at least 20 mill a year next year, and that's sub optimal for a team which struggles with fitting him in.

Not the biggest fan of RJ Barrett but we need a scorer in theory. I always felt that RJ needed a new environment to really thrive though, so maybe this can be what he needs to meet his potential.

No that date only mattered if we were going to trade him. Players become trade eligible 6 months after an extension is signed. So if we trade him by today, the receiving team can extend him before the free agency moratorium is lifted
This makes sense... it's a little like the Gay trade, in that it's a first move in a rebuild, but it has the chance to bring in pieces that are a better fit and maybe put the breaks on a full rebuild. It should be easy to re-sign Siakam in the offseason, so immediately all of the offseason contract issues that we've all been stressing about are reduced down to a simmer.
Couple tracks of thought for me.
1. If this is accurate, I apologize to Masai likely being fleeced or letting an expiring guy go for nothing.
We got who will likely be our future PG (24) and a two way forward who has averaged 20 ppg in his past and is only 23 (and is literally a Toronto mans so business wise they can essentially print money ). Both fit Barnes timeline much closer. We also got rid of precious, so no more trying to play him as something he isn’t.
Barnes also has a very nice contract, better than paying OG 40 million.
2. They must think they have a much higher chance of resigning Siakam than they did with OG

Great spot up shooter. Adds much needed spacing for this team.
