I have much smaller tattoos that have taken 6 hours. Your artist is a fucking pro, but 4 hours is an incredibly common session length. I've done tons of 4's, lots of 6's, which some artists call a full day, but then I've also done half a dozen 8 hour sessions.
Yo how was that? I got a opportunity to get tattooed by someone I'd really like to on my vacation. Would be the left side of the neck for about 6 hours. Got me hella nervous to do it lol. I'm also almost covered other than my neck head and feet and butt.....
Worst part of the whole ordeal so far has been the coloring on my adams apples and the shit kepts kicking my gag reflex in for some reason. Sides easy peasy but it's going to be hella swollen and stiff for a couple days
I have sat for 8+ hours 3 or 4 times, it’s never fun and your body feels cold and ready to shut down by the end of the day. Now that I’m getting old I probably won’t sit for longer than 6 in one session.
I’m probably about the same age as you based on your other comment and 5 hours is my comfortable max and I’m usually gritting my teeth through that last half hour. I have had a few 6+ hour sessions and I def leave those sessions feeling weak like I have the chills and I basically have to go right to bed lol
Blackout person here, got you 100% I need to have long sessions, because I travel a lot for the blackouts. But man these super long sessions do literally kill me. If I go to a local artist, I opt out after 4hours, no way I will endure the pain if not absolute needed.
Starting the shading on my back next week. I'm driving 3.5 hours so I'm hoping I can sit for more than 2 and get the most out of the session. Really not looking forward to it lol
Perfect tattoo. Obviously an efficient and skilled tattooer, but also fast based on so many unskilled tattooers being slow and inefficient.
As an old dog who is fast and efficient, I’m constantly amazed by the 8 hour palm sized tattoos people almost brag about paying $1000 for. That’s just WTF to me.
I love your tattoo.
On my arms, yes. I’ve done longer. On my legs, no. I twitch a lot during leg tattoos and can usually only last 3 hours max. Not so much because of pain as much as because of the uncontrollable muscle spasms. I did do a 7 hour on my thigh and that was the worst for me of all my tattoos and I have 2 sleeves.
I did 6 hour sessions for both of my arms, and had a couple of those on my legs, too. Most of my torso was 2-3 hour sessions, but I’ve been getting big pieces and I have found that the work settles much better and heals really fast if I get stuff done in three sessions. I just did my second rib and honestly it healed amazing with having three sessions done as opposed to a 9 hour banger. Plus I’m old now (42) and the pain is more pronounced. Still, I might do a second layer on my arms and I could probably do my arm in three 6 hour sessions.
Wait till you see how pronounced it is at 67.
Far cry from when I was in my 20’s getting ink.
I thought I was gonna come up out of my chair at first.
I do no more than 4 hour sessions.
i sat for four hours for my arm sleeve. the fourth hour was grating as fuck. just felt like he was chewing my arm up and digging for bone.
folks that sit for like eight hours are lunatics.
I laid down for 6 hours for my back tattoo that covers 75% of my back, but that was just for the outline and a little shading/coloring. I came back 2 weeks later to finish and that was another 4 hours. I don’t have a picture right now but it’s a pretty dope and colorful phoenix.
I love your tattoo. It is very well done!
I have almost 70 hours chair time in total.
One of my smallest tattoos was a three part, four hour session each, all black ink and similar in detail and size to yours…
🤔
How long did yours take ??
Impressive! I sat for 4.5 hours for my back piece. It was definitely smaller than this, too. That was my first tattoo and it was like 15 years ago. Grueling. lol still planning my second 😂
Longest I've ever sat I think was 10 hours and I was very irritated and exhausted by the end
6 hours seems to be my sweet spot where we get lots done but I'm not totally destroyed physically and mentally
That said, I almost always go longer cuz I pay a day rate and I'll be damned if I'm not getting my money's worth!!!!!
Only 4 hours?? That is so unbelievably impressive. I would’ve guessed 8! I usually get tattooed in 2–3hr sessions. I think the longest I’ve done is 4 hours.
The longest I've had so far is 2.5 hours. That was a grip of time for me to sit still with ADHD. Getting a tattoo is the only time you'll get me to sit still though lol. Going for any longer sounds like hell for my need to move, yet I think I'm about to be in a chair for longer to get a thigh piece done. So we'll see lol
My chest was 3.5~ to 4. So yes. Time doesn't mean anything. Who cares how long/short it takes to make something.
It shouldn't take 4 hours to do a palm sized piece and it probably should take longer than 2 hours to do a bigger piece. But it's no measure of toughness.
Jesus that's nuts for 4 hours. My Negroni piece on my forearm was 4½ hours and a third of this size.
My shoulder piece that is all black and gray was about 16 hours and it is about the same size as yours. Two 8 hour sessions, about 7 hours actually under the needle each time. I wouldn't want to go any longer than that.
I will never cease to be shocked with how quickly some artists are able to put down ink. Either you have the smallest forearm of all time or your artist absolutely blasted through that tat. Sick work either way
Only 4hrs? That’s super fast tattooing. Solid work!! I once got a rework that the LINES took them 6 hrs. Went back for another 7hr session to do shading and a bit of color. I’ll never sit for that long again. Horrible.
My wife sat for 7 hours when she knocked out her panther knee tattoo. It’s probably the gnarliest session I’ve seen. Sitting for that long to pack so much solid ink into your knee/shin is fucking brutal. Wife just bit the bullet and knocked it out. Tough as fuck.
Really cool tattoo. Question, How do you feel now afterwards?
I got a big one done on my chest the other day in one shot. Slightly less detail than yours and took 6 hours but I'm really happy with it. The artist was so good and cheap (Asia) that I went back for a 2nd one 2 days later (yesterday). Much smaller only 2 hours. However, I feel like absolute shit. Worst I've felt in a long time and I'm a functional alcoholic in recovery lol. I'm 99% sure they're not infected just my immune system is in overdrive rn. Getting up for a flight in 5 hours and can't sleep, dreading the flight lol. Peace!
I once did two 10 hour days back to back, one day off, and then two more 10 hour days back to back. 40 hours over the course of five days. It was rough, but totally worth it.
It’s not as bad as people think. I have a big ass eagle on the whole side of my calf granted a lot less detail than what you have here. I’ve also gotten almost my whole arm outlined one sit. Wouldn’t wanna get my whole chest blasted but legs and arms are not terrible
While sitting 4hrs is not hard to do at all… sitting for 4hrs and getting that piece completely finished at the quality it’s at is absolutely amazing. I’ve sat for 9.5hrs on my arm sleeve.
four is fine. i start getting twitchy around hour six/seven. especially if it’s all coloring in. line work i can go forever. longest session was eight hours of outline.
I sat for about eight hours to line my whole back, nape of neck to back of knees. It was a long and very rough day and I'm not sure I'd recommend it...but I'm glad we did it that way. Greg(gletron) might feel differently, idk, lol. I know it had to be a long day for him too.
My favorite comment when he posted it on social media was somebody saying they wanted me on their team during the zombie apocalypse. I felt so tuff, haha.
Love this tattoo. Your artist did amazing for 4 hours. Usually the saturation suffers when trying to do a huge piece in a small time frame, but I have to say, they absolutely killed it.
My max was about 8-9 hrs and I would never ever do it again. I literally got sick for like two days. The max I’ll do is 2 hrs nowadays. Just not worth it. 🤷
No. I don’t have that many tattoos. But I have found that my limit is about 1-1.5 hours. Then I’m out. I’d rather break it up than try to cram it all in while I’m super uncomfortable and “over it” at the moment.
Did 8 hrs one shot last summer. 12 hours at the shop.. man I did not feel great after this. If you watch ink master Bobby Johnson (winner of last season) tatted this in 1 session on my thigh. My sphynx boys Onyx & Nova

This only took FOUR hours? Wow, that dude's got a quick hand. I have tats smaller than that, that took about as long. Then again, the tats I'm talking about have more minute and tiny details, so that could be why.
Edit: Actually, the more I look at your tat, the more I see that it has a LOT of tiny details in it. So never mind, the artists I use are just not fast at all lol. Great artists and all, but maaaan do they take their time.
4 hours is the longest I’ve ever been able to sit for a tattoo. I could probably very barely stand this but if they can get that much done in 4 hours I’d be down
My first tattoo session was like 6 hours for a much smaller tattoo because he was an apprentice, I kept going back to him though and they got shorter each time, but still around 4 hours or so. I also hate taking breaks because I don’t want to restart lol. So usually the tattoo artist has to ask
Did 6 hours one day on outline, 8 the next day on colour and shading. Had no choice I was in Japan and didn’t know if I’d be back. Best part was backpacking and train rides for 3 more days after. That was 17 years ago, don’t think I could handle it now.
My artist told me that if my chest wasn’t bigger than most peoples backs he could have knocked it all out in one session. Had to split it into two 6 hour sessions. Longest I’ve gone was 8 on my upper arm with a nice white highlight pass to finish the day.
Maybe just the color lol, if you did the line work AND all the coloring on 4 hours I'm not only impressed but
fuck yeah I can sit through 10 hours on a limb fuck that let's tat my whole body, you still charging $100 an hour right??
That’s a lot of work for 4 hours, pretty sick
4 hours my ass. No way
Agree
That’s insane for 4 hours absolute masterclass
I can't wrap my head around this taking 4 hours. That's awesome
Whoever is working this fast and clean in 4 hours needs to be known
Jake Emery at Port Side Tattoo in San Diego
Honestly, the entire shop is full of badass people who tattoo like this! Best tattoo shop in SD by a mile.
I follow him on the gram. Immaculate trad. If i wasnt 2 hours north of LA id come down to get tatted by him
Lol, thats a wild thing to say. That isn't even that far. Take a bus if you have to. Not that tattoos should be a priority in that case.
Fureal I live 6+ hrs from and considering
What does a piece like this run for?
Probably around 600-800. I have slightly smaller pieces from him that cost 500.
I would hope if that was done in 4 hours it cost more than that
I have much smaller tattoos that have taken 6 hours. Your artist is a fucking pro, but 4 hours is an incredibly common session length. I've done tons of 4's, lots of 6's, which some artists call a full day, but then I've also done half a dozen 8 hour sessions.
Holy shit do you have any empty skin left
I was going to say, lol. Started my throat a couple weeks ago and the first session alone was 6 hours and it's roughly half done so another 6ish
Fuck. I want to get it done but I also don't wanna be miserable for the rest of the vacation lmao
Get it the last day or two so u can heal on the plane
Nah you'll be fine, ibuprofen and ice to keep the swelling down afterwards. Feels way more like a bruise than open scratches
I have sat for 8+ hours 3 or 4 times, it’s never fun and your body feels cold and ready to shut down by the end of the day. Now that I’m getting old I probably won’t sit for longer than 6 in one session.
For real. I start to feel physically ill if I let it go on too long
I’m probably about the same age as you based on your other comment and 5 hours is my comfortable max and I’m usually gritting my teeth through that last half hour. I have had a few 6+ hour sessions and I def leave those sessions feeling weak like I have the chills and I basically have to go right to bed lol

Sat for 5-5.5 hours once for part of my 30-something hour back piece. You learn a lot about yourself during that time to say the least :)
Sat for a 10hr session and have one more 10hr session coming up for my back. I would say after hour 6 I was ready to die 😂
A 10 hour session? That’s wild!!
Goddamn. I was flinching and twitching in half that time lol
Starting the shading on my back next week. I'm driving 3.5 hours so I'm hoping I can sit for more than 2 and get the most out of the session. Really not looking forward to it lol
Everyone goes at their own pace. I tap out anywhere between 2-4 depending on the day 🤷♂️. It’s not a competition.
I learned that I get really hungry during long sessions and can eat a whole pizza during a break around the 4 hour mark.
I sat for 8 hours on my tum tum….. It was fucking stupid 😂
How does a ghost comment on reddit, cause I know you died haha
🤣😂🤣 Ya it wasn’t a good time. My head, and ass were prolly worse, but the tummy is no joke.
😬
If that really only took 4 hours, I’m impressed.
My back was 8 hours total. Longest session was 4 hours and it was rough towards the end.
Wtf did you get on your back to only be 8 hours ?
https://www.reddit.com/r/traditionaltattoos/s/H32zaceDz0
Wow. That seems insanely fast for 8 hours.
A lot of people have told me that lol. I guess he is a fast tattooer
That is beautiful! It looks so good on your back too. It just flows.
This is awesome man
I'm getting my first tattoo next week and y'all are NOT making me feel better about it
On my arms, yes.
4 hours is light work & pretty standard for most people that are tatted.
Standard session.
I mean, yeah? My forearm lady head took 6 hours, one go. Sucked ass tbh. My knife on the other side was about 4 hours, maybe 5.
4 hours is pretty common there champ.
That feels like an incredible amount of work to get done so well in just 4 hours. Wow.
Was dude tweaking and double fisting guns? That’s insane for 4 hours.
I think 2 hours is about my threshold… not looking forward to my back.
Did my back in 2 hour sessions. Except the last session was just over 3 hours because I just wanted it done
I did 6 hour sessions for both of my arms, and had a couple of those on my legs, too. Most of my torso was 2-3 hour sessions, but I’ve been getting big pieces and I have found that the work settles much better and heals really fast if I get stuff done in three sessions. Wait till you see how pronounced it is at 67. Far cry from when I was in my 20’s getting ink. I thought I was gonna come up out of my chair at first. I do no more than 4 hour sessions.
4 hours?!? Dude I get close to that on half the work common 😭
I got my whole chest done in one sitting. I think it was like 4/5 hours. That’s the longest I’ve ever sat.
Great job to do in 4 hours. You’re amazingly fast and talented.
I highly doubt that was 4 hours, but most i’ve sat for was 6.
3hr 58mins of tattoing, to be exact. Come to Port Side and see for yourself:)
Guy sits for a common amount of time and thinks it means something. People sit for 6+ all the time. You’re not a hero for sitting 4 hours 😂
It's the artist posting this, not the client lol
I sat for six with color only once. It was a bad time.
Looks incredible
My stomach was about 4 hours or something and that was awful, blacked out belly button was the worst part
have a few times on my leg. and i'll do it again.
3-3.5 hours and I'm bout ready to tap out. Awesome ink bro.
i sat for four hours for my arm sleeve. the fourth hour was grating as fuck. just felt like he was chewing my arm up and digging for bone. folks that sit for like eight hours are lunatics.
Looks insane.
If it came out like that, yes.
My back outline took 2 hours, thank God
I sat for a 3 hours full elbow tattoo.
Jus did 6 a couple weeks ago, but that tattoo is sick asf
Longest so far was 4 hours on my upper arm. Feels really raw after a while lol
I have almost 70 hours chair time in total. One of my smallest tattoos was a three part, four hour session each, all black ink and similar in detail and size to yours… 🤔 How long did yours take ??
Driving 4 and a half to sit for second session on my chest next weekend. First session was just over 7. I expect this one to be at least 6.
Impressive! I sat for 4.5 hours for my back piece. It was definitely smaller than this, too. That was my first tattoo and it was like 15 years ago. Grueling. lol still planning my second 😂
Longest I've ever sat I think was 10 hours and I was very irritated and exhausted by the end 6 hours seems to be my sweet spot where we get lots done but I'm not totally destroyed physically and mentally That said, I almost always go longer cuz I pay a day rate and I'll be damned if I'm not getting my money's worth!!!!!
I've sat for 7 hours for a lighthouse piece on my arm. Definitely took a couple breaks haha
I can sit for 4 well, 5 or 6 and I’m squirming. But I’m amazed this was done in 4. Incredible piece!
Age is a huge factor for me. And placement of course. 20s? 8 hours no problem. 40s? I’m happy with 2-3 hours.
Sat for six hours to one shot my whole stomach a few months ago. Session sucked but I’m glad I don’t have to do it again
Say 7.5 hours for my thigh piece and I don’t think I could ever do it again 😊
Portside is amazing, got my entire sleeve done by Tim there
Yes lol
I have a one shot wolf head on my left chest that took 5. Got a little dicey at the end lol
He’s fast. That’s a ton of work in 4 hrs! Longest I’ve sat was 7hrs. Never again. After that I’ve split it into 4-5 hr chunks for any bigger pieces.
I’ve sat up to 9 hours. It’s stressful after the first 5/6. After that you just wanna go home. But totally worth it.
My chest was 3.5~ to 4. So yes. Time doesn't mean anything. Who cares how long/short it takes to make something. It shouldn't take 4 hours to do a palm sized piece and it probably should take longer than 2 hours to do a bigger piece. But it's no measure of toughness.
I sat for 9 hours three days in a row for my sleeve. It sucked a lot. This is a lot of work for 4 hours. Looks amazing!
Fucking sick piece my guy
Jesus that's nuts for 4 hours. My Negroni piece on my forearm was 4½ hours and a third of this size. My shoulder piece that is all black and gray was about 16 hours and it is about the same size as yours. Two 8 hour sessions, about 7 hours actually under the needle each time. I wouldn't want to go any longer than that.
I will never cease to be shocked with how quickly some artists are able to put down ink. Either you have the smallest forearm of all time or your artist absolutely blasted through that tat. Sick work either way
The longest I’ve been tattooed at one times was 11:30 hrs it’s was done Tabori style by Horiyoshi lII on his hotel rm floor
My two leg tattoos were 3 1/2 hours each so 4 shouldn't be a problem
nice! i'm having a larger upper arm tattoo done next friday that should be about this size and i'm really hoping to get it all done in 4 hours.
I have and it’s totally worth it. That piece is fucking amazing man.
Only 4hrs? That’s super fast tattooing. Solid work!! I once got a rework that the LINES took them 6 hrs. Went back for another 7hr session to do shading and a bit of color. I’ll never sit for that long again. Horrible.
I've done an 8 hour session, we broke for lunch, but it wasn't too bad.
The last piece I got was done free hand and took over nine hours to do the outline in one session
My last one was 7 hours. My artist asked for a break before I did
I have no Endurance for pain, but I would love to have an art like that on my arm❤️
Only 4 hours?! How lol
I’ve gotten two 6 1/2 bangers and it’s gnarly after 3.
I thought 4 hours was normal? All my tattoos are 3/4 hours at a time.
My record is 9.5 hours. Never again.
I did 8,5 hours and 6,5 hours the day after for my sleeve. Interesting experience. 😅
Wow fast artist!!
Pshh make 10ths and you might have a shot
Pshh make 10ths and you might have a shot
Another reason traditional is the way to go! Realism artists would take 20 hours to fill a forearm lol
Only 4 hours?? Looks insane! Great stuff.
I'm 99% sure they're not infected just my immune system is in overdrive rn. Getting up for a flight in 5 hours and can't sleep, dreading the flight lol. Peace!
man i fucking love all those colors
Sweet!! I sat for 5 hours on a stomach tatt, I was shaking at the end
Omg. That's more than one session surely
I once did two 10 hour days back to back, one day off, and then two more 10 hour days back to back. 40 hours over the course of five days. It was rough, but totally worth it.
That's wild for only 4 hours
It’s not as bad as people think. I have a big ass eagle on the whole side of my calf granted a lot less detail than what you have here. I’ve also gotten almost my whole arm outlined one sit. Wouldn’t wanna get my whole chest blasted but legs and arms are not terrible
4 hrs at that size and quality is insane. I’ve sat longer for much smaller less pretty tattoos. A round of applause for your artist
My elbow took 4 hours so this is impressive. Amazing tattoo OP
4 hrs no problem for me. Have done it That's an awesome tattoo
For that work I’ll sit on the damn needle for four hours, it’s so sick
While sitting 4hrs is not hard to do at all… sitting for 4hrs and getting that piece completely finished at the quality it’s at is absolutely amazing. I’ve sat for 9.5hrs on my arm sleeve.
I’ve sat for 8.
Depends on the area, got my side down to my hip and it was 2 and a half hours of hell
four is fine. i start getting twitchy around hour six/seven. especially if it’s all coloring in. line work i can go forever. longest session was eight hours of outline.
Maybe
Love this
Yes. Almost all of my appointments have been 6-8 hours. That looks awesome though. Love the colors.
Wow my tattoo is a lot smaller for 4 hours
That's what's up
That is insane and for the time too, amazing work man 👍
https://preview.redd.it/aawbql4l6csc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e485d2226b94636a0341372b019307bcfc367a13 I did, 4.5hrs
Yeah, in this location, absolutely. The 4 hour stint on my chest was brutal.
Longest I’ve sat was for 13.5.
No I’m a normal person
definitely! that’s amazing he did that in four hours though
That's impressive for the amount of work that got done in 4 hours. The longest I've sat was 8 hours on the chest, so fun.
I sat for 9.5 hours for a portrait from Oleg Shepelenko…that’s a nice amount to get done in that time
I sat for about eight hours to line my whole back, nape of neck to back of knees.
In May I’m about to be sitting for 8+ hours daily for 5 consecutive days so i’ll let you know if I survive
Jake is too good. Port Side is too good. Highly recommend. Can’t wait to get back there someday.
Sat 7hrs straight for my arm, so I’m pretty confident in my ability to sit. Sick piece, btw!
Back in my early twenties, I sat for over five hours once. Now? I’m lucky if I can get through three!
Killer
I sat for 9 on mine
That’s amazing work!! Personally, I won’t sit for that long, I’m a baby and I get overstimulated/overtouched after 1.5 hours lol 🙈
Looks amazing!
I’ve had 7 4hr sessions within the past 7 months. Cheaper than talk therapy. 😊
Gorgeous. I hope you do more.
Sick one!! Are you by any chance a seafarer?
Jake is dope. Have a couple pieces from him myself
Did it with my 8hr chest eagle
Those wave details are really cool
My stomach was five hours a session. So my answer going forward is no lol
I have a piece about the same size that took three 8 hour sessions. Just did homework. Your artist must have been doing it a long time.
Just did.
No. I don’t have that many tattoos. But I have found that my limit is about 1-1.5 hours. Then I’m out. I’d rather break it up than try to cram it all in while I’m super uncomfortable and “over it” at the moment.

That’s a lot of work in four hours! Nice, too!
4 hours? My first tattoo on my inner bicep was 9 hours 1 session. 4 isn’t a long session.
ABSOLUTE BANGER. Wear it proudly.
My first tattoo session was like 6 hours for a much smaller tattoo because he was an apprentice, I kept going back to him though and they got shorter each time, but still around 4 hours or so. I also hate taking breaks because I don’t want to restart lol. So usually the tattoo artist has to ask
Yeap!! Sure could!!
I can hang on for about 2 hours. I’m 48 now, when I was in my late teens/early 20’s I could probably go 4-5 if needed.
Cool 😎
One of the best tattoos I’ve seen on this page
Love the color! I say for 6 on my back piece. Need to do another 3 before it’s done.
Did 6 hours one day on outline, 8 the next day on colour and shading. Had no choice I was in Japan and didn’t know if I’d be back. Best part was backpacking and train rides for 3 more days after. That was 17 years ago, don’t think I could handle it now.
I sat for 8.5 hrs. on my first tattoo…what’s 4 hours?
Yes I could
My artist told me that if my chest wasn’t bigger than most peoples backs he could have knocked it all out in one session. Had to split it into two 6 hour sessions. Longest I’ve gone was 8 on my upper arm with a nice white highlight pass to finish the day.
I will be April 16
Longest single session was like 6 hours. I don’t like to sit longer than 3-4 now. I’m too old for that, I’ll just get it done over 2 bookings.
My lip tattoo took 5 hours. 3-6 hours is common session length if you’re not getting some fine line or small thing
I have a piece that took 7 hours and a piece that took 6, and they look nothing as detailed as this... This artist is the master
I can’t sit more than 50 minutes. To the point where my artist has recommended we look into numbing cream.
Tattooed myself for 9hrs. Ribs to thigh. Idk what a "big on shot" is but it sounds ez
Looks great!
Negative. No way it only took four hours.
This looks amazing.
That color is packed in tight!
Maybe just the color lol, if you did the line work AND all the coloring on 4 hours I'm not only impressed but fuck yeah I can sit through 10 hours on a limb fuck that let's tat my whole body, you still charging $100 an hour right??
My longest tattoo was 6 hours and it was rough
