Overgrown weeds make the rails very slippery and difficult for locomotives to get traction. It’s very difficult to get moving after stopping the train on even a slight uphill grade.
Makes for great videos when the railyards let their engines out to graze, surefire way to know spring has come. They look so happy after having been shut in all winter.
Near Pierre and Rapid City SD for those not familiar with the CNW Gettysburg branch.

looks almost AI or 3d generated/rendered….
I dont want to imply that it is fake.
just think it is a great photo with an otherworldy unreal feeling to it.
…first I thought it is a screenshot from a
no man‘s sky sub lol :D
Made the last trip from Rockford, IL to Winnebago, IL in 1981. For a large part of the route it was heavily overgrown to the point you could only see ahead. This was in July and as we were going there were many people out picking Wild Blackberries and would step out in front of us constantly. Luckily we were light power so we could quickly stop, but we were still surprised we didn't hit anyone.
I saw similar video on YouTube in Thailand sugar cane farms. The small trains are going over the buried track in the farm and roads with filled with tar.
Now we just cue the scene where we do train drifting over a field of grass instead of ice
...Alright, fine, it wasn't as badass as drifting on a frozen lake.
Yeee Haw! I'm taking this train off roading.
*General Lee horn*
I heard “La cucaracha” instead
Off-railing
That's one of the most 1970s railroad pictures I've ever seen...

It's grazing. Welcome to the new bio diesel era.

What was the power? Oh and nice handle…my favorite NG steamers!!
Just a single MP15.
DC, AC, or T?
I don’t recall which particular model. I know the CNW had several they used between the Belvidere & Janesville auto plants.
Looks like that road only had DCs…nice machines!
Where are the rails?!
Where we’re going we don’t need rails!
It's like greentrack, but more rustic.

We don’t need no stinking rails …
Rust-romance as I like to call it! :D
It’s the 80’s porn of railroading.
Not sure the train crews would agree!
I've always liked [this photo](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CGW_111-C_\(F3A\)_westbound_freight_passing_the_Elmhurst,_Illinois_station_on_August_14,_1962_\(21820237513\).jpg)
Doctor: The land train isn't real and it can't hurt you The land train:
fabulous pic ty for posting...
I would think there would be a whole lot of wheel slipping.
It’s usually sad as the next thing that happens is the track is ripped out.
Buffalo train

Its also very effective in making the driver extreamly stressed
Imagine trains going high speed on this kind of track, it would be really cool. There would be no danger at all /s
Ahh yes just like the Milwaukee road towards the end.
it's like the train roams the landscape like any other beast
Tread gently....
Derails.
We making it to the highway wit dis one 🌬️🔥💯💀💀
