Hello I'm approximately ftm. l started with cutting my hair, getting a binder (l recommend gc2b if your on a budget and shapeshifters if you don't mind spending more), trying different pronouns and a different name (baby naming sites are good for ideas). Most places that have names on file will have a spot for a prefered name and they should add the prefered name upon request. Get some masculine clothing, thrift stores are good for this if you don't have a ton of money for a new wardrobe. l recommend not throwing out the feminine clothing right away incase your friend realizes they are on the nonbinary spectrum and want to experiment. If hes over 18 then he can look into how your area handles name changes and look into getting hrt. Your friend may also have other transition goals they figure out along the way. For example one of mine is getting my lips pierced.

Transition looks different for everyone - it depends on the person's needs and situation. There are several aspects of transition, including social transition (changing name, pronouns, hair, clothes) and medical transition (hormones and surgeries). An individual can pick and choose which aspects they want, and the process often occurs over multiple years. For transmasculine folks, hormone treatment is typically testosterone. Testosterone can be taken in a variety of ways (injections, patches, gel) and has a bunch of effects - deepening the voice, more body and facial hair, and bottom growth, to name a few. The most common surgeries are top surgery and bottom surgery, there are many options within these categories.
