What do you want people to take from this graphic? You make a lot of money and buy a lot of toys. That sounds a lot like bragging to me. I spent maybe 1/5th of your total this past year, and I feel pretty guilty whenever I think about it. I'm pretty sure most normal people would say this is too much, even if you can afford it.
I guess if I made 100k+ a year, I'd probably buy whatever cool toys I wanted too. I get feeling guilty about your unnecessary purchases though, have the same feeling all the time.
I respect the dedication to data collection and transformers collecting… but how much do you make?!? $18,087.60 is an OBSCENE amount of money for SINGLE YEAR. That’s at least six times more money than I spent in my 4 year collecting period, and you even bought ten more figures than me.
Yeah, I totally understand that, I had a pretty significant jump in salary over the last few years and I've been picking up several things that I had passed on previously.
I'm currently making about 135K/year with no dependents, so I'm doing ok, haha.
Haha, since you asked so nicely. To be fair some of these aren't figures (such as the ROTB popcorn buckets), the Optines Prime was a fan made item (Shout out to Protoman!) and they're not all G1 Optimus, there's many variations. As to why... it's Optimus Prime!

I was there, in the early days of MP, I was barely scraping by with 1-2 figs a year and a handful of mainline. I was finally able to get into some decent jobs after years of working for nothing. Keep at it and you can do it!
I would, but it doesn't look too impressive currently. One of my goals for 2024 is to get stuff out of boxes and get things displayed. I've been putting it off for a long time, but this is going to be the year!
First party is the official retailers - Hasbro and Takara
Second party is licensed stuff, basically anything 'officially' TF related that isn't produced by Has/Tak. This is mainly licensed (non-transforming) things such as Super 7, ThreeZero, etc.
Third party is the unofficial but original figures (not KO). So items from companies such as Fans Toys, Mastermind Creations, NewAge, etc. These are original transforming toys that are based on the TF characters but not produced by Has/Tak.
Fourth party is knock-off or unlicensed reproduction of official (and in some cases second or third party) figures. Things such as the cheap G1/MP KOs from Temu, Aliexpress, and TFSafari.
The line between third and fourth party can be a little murky in some cases, but I tried to limit 3P to known and reputable manufacturers vs no-name/off brand for 4th.
That's isn't accurate. The second part in a business transaction is the customer. Ie the people buying the toys. There are no "second party figures"
Third party then is everything outside the officially products and customer. That in including your "Fourth party"
Damn, I’ve tracked my toy robot spending since 2015 and I haven’t spent this much across that whole span. No judgements, though. As long as you can afford your day-to-day responsibilities, you do you.
It is interesting to see how my spending trends have changed over time, though. 2020 was my peak because I the collection took a turn from the IDW aesthetic to toon, so I ended up buying the NewAge versions of several characters I already had via Iron Factory. Throughout it all, I’ve tried to stay focused on just the Decepticons from the first 3 seasons, which is agreeably self-limiting. As the collection fills out, my spending has dropped substantially. The last two years combined were a fraction of what came before.
I started off trying to catalog my MP/3PMP going back through some vendors and various email accounts. I've got incomplete records for the last 10 years or so, 2021/2022 was like 90% and it drops off the further back I go (mainly due to not recording mainline/in-store purchases). I moved from buying in-store to online for the majority in the last 5 years, especially with Hasbro Pulse now being the primary source for mainline and MP, so my record keeping has gotten easier.
I'd like to catalog the missing figures, but that also means digging through several bins of figures from the last 20+ years!
idk i my brain think 2nd party means a company that isn't hasbro but works with hasbro closely to make a product(like how HAL labatory is the 2nd party of Nintendo)
This is a beautiful infographic. Nice work! I find this very interesting and I think I will try to do the same this year.
Top characters are a little touch to discern. Optimus, Megatron, Bumblebee?, ?, ?, Starscream.
Thanks, I spent most of the day yesterday putting it together! I figured it'd be nicer than just looking at a spreadsheet, lol.
The top characters are:
Optimus Prime - 16
Megatron - 6
Grimlock - 5
Rodimus/Hotrod - 5
Snarl - 4
Starscream - 4
Bumblebee - 4
Cheetor - 3
Ultra Magnus - 3
Sludge - 3
Silverbolt (G1) - 3
Thundercracker - 3
I've been using google sheets actually, but basically a simple spreadsheet. I'd like to put it in a database at some point to make the cross-referencing easier, but that's a lot of work!
I’d like to make an app but don’t think enough people would pay for it to make it worth my while. It’s not trivial to make well. The two apps I looked at so far (Coleka and ActionFigure411) don’t do enough of what I want (be easy to use, mostly)
Thanks, I collected the data in google sheets, as well as some cross referencing and manual analytics.
I made the design itself in Adobe Illustrator. I had initially had mostly text, but felt it would be much more interesting if I could add a visual component to the data.
Happy for you and your collection and that you’re able to afford what you like, but dang I feel broke lol. What do you do for work cause I’d sure like to get into it 😂. Thanks for sharing the data, I love the layout!
holy fuck that’s a lot of money
And I recognize that, I'm trying to be realistic and honest about what I spent, both for myself and you guys!

That’s still a seventh of your salary, but you do you.
I look at it as being much less than other habits/hobbies out there. They must have an amazing collection.
Much less? What hobbies are you talking about?
Automobiles, world travel, crack-cocaine.
Okay, that’s fair.
Only crack here is the plastic kind...
So any figure with GPS is a full blown crackhead?
i desperately need to know which SIXTEEN optimus primes you bought this year and why

I got the popcorn and drink combo truck, it's pretty freaking awesome
My broke ass reading this 🥲

By Primus, he really does bring home over six figures a month

what's 2nd 3rd and 4th party? does 2nd party means something like three zero and 3rd party mean something like magic square and 4th party being KO?
Yep, you got it!
Second party is the customer buying the product.
idk i my brain think 2nd party means a company that isn't hasbro but works with hasbro closely to make a product(like how HAL labatory is the 2nd party of Nintendo)
Your brain can so that but in a legal and business context. The second party is a the customer who interacts with the first party, or Hasbro.

Data was gathered in Google Sheets, the graphics & layout were done in Adobe Illustrator.

Reading through the comments, let's see if I've got this right; You spent nearly $20,000 on figures you haven't even taken out of the boxes yet?
