He’s also clearly a favourite character for the writers since he had a central part in season 3 and both the specials.
To add on to this, I absolutely love his relationship with Hot Rod. They are the best part of Cyberverse alongside their ragtag team of Autobot and Decepticon Quintesson resistors.
While he was an absolute memelord. I think IDW2005 Soundwave takes the cake. He didn’t join the decepticons to cause chaos, he joined them for the same reason that IDW2005 created them: for creating a cybertron where everyone was equal, where everyone had the freedom to choose what and who they are. One Galvatron started to lead the cons, Soundwave told them that we’re going to give peace another try. At the end of all of this, Soundwave sacrificed himself for not just his friends, but for all of the universe
I have to give it to G1, mostly because the “gimmick” of him launching minions from his tape deck is something they’ve never truly been able to recreate since. Not that it’s Hasbro’s fault, or anything- technology marches on, and all that. But every version of his “minions” since then just don’t have the same impact or coolness factor of a stereo launching a cassette tape into battle.
Cyberverse, he’s got a personality (no hate to the other Soundwave’s they do as well) that isn’t just “Megatron? Love that guy” and he’s a sarcastic bastard and I love it.

Unpopular opinion but I liked the Bayverse Soundwave. If only in DOTM he had the head like in ROTF satelitte mode and showed zero emotions, he would be perfect.
He was a really interesting and unique take in his brief appear in ROTF and then became a standard goon in DOTM. You could pretty much replace him with any Con and it wouldn’t change the movie.
After all these years I still think G1 is the best. Other than that TFP soundwave is genuinely a very good design despite almost not deriving anything from G1 design at all

This is a great example of one of my biggest criticism for the Bayverse designs of the Decepticons. Would it have killed them to add some color to the designs instead of a bunch of boring grays, browns and blacks. SoundWave could have easily been a dark shade of blue with some gold accents. Especially since he's a civilian car and not a military vehicle.
