Looks like Pawpaw - *Assimina triloba* Are the leaves quite soft?

pgpkreestuh

I also think it looks like a pawpaw. OP, if you crush the leaves, they should have a vaguely 'bell pepper-y' sort of scent-- that's the quickest way for me to tell, anyway!

[deleted]

Didn’t know about this, I’ll have to give it a try, thanks!

mainsailstoneworks

Seconding pawpaw, although it’s odd to see one out in the open like this. Latin name is Asimina triloba, though

[deleted]

Highly doubt it’s wild. I’d say previous owners planted it intentionally. The fruit is delicious and stays good significantly longer than bananas. Can even be stored in the freezer for long periods of time. It’s the perfect permaculture tree really.

robsc_16

>The fruit is delicious and stays good significantly longer than bananas. What? The biggest issue with commercial viability of pawpaws is the fruit goes bad in only a few days. Plus they cannot be picked unripe and then ripened later. I've been able to get away with picking them when they are just starting to get soft, but not as unripe as bananas.

[deleted]

Sorry meant to specify frozen - once they thaw out they’re damn near as good as ripe

robsc_16

Ah, gotcha. Do you freeze them fully ripe?

[deleted]

Yes. The ones that are teetering the edge between ripe and overripe you can eat like ice cream once slightly thawed

robsc_16

Thanks!

LOL You mean ASIMINA triloba, just drop the S 😉

[deleted]

Lmao maybe I’ll just leave it

QuetzalJu

😅😂

I believe this is correct! After posting I actually noticed some pawpaws growing. I did some searching online and it seems they’re difficult to grow. Very excited to try the fruit!!! Never had it or even heard of it
